  • Tracking SQL Server 2008 Timeout Errors

    we got some connections timeouts running a stored procedure in a SQL Server 2008 instance. after a while, the DB started to work as usual, and there weren't any additional timeout errors. So I'm trying to get additional info about the error. Does SQL server 2008 have any kind of error log that I can look into? Do exist any auditing/logging features that I can activate to trace the error (if it happens again)?

    I'm trying to install SQL Server 2008 Express Edition, and it's demanding Windows Powershell and refusing to proceed with the installation. Is there any way to get it to install without Powershell? (The reason I'm asking is not so much for myself personally as to reduce the number of headaches through which I'm going to have to drag other people when I tell them my program needs SQL Server.)

  • Deny login from certain hosts if logging in with specific sql credentials

    I want to stop some of our developers from connecting to the production sql server using a specific sql account. They have rights to connect through windows authentication with lower rights. They claim that changing the password will affect too many other processes running on our processing machine. So I want to deny access if they're connecting from there dev machines for now. Another way this would work is if I could just allow connections from one specific host.

  • Add an Excel file as a linked server in SQL 2012

    I'm trying to add a linked server to an Excel 2010 file from SQL Server 2012. Every reference I've found online for doing this is using older versions of SQL Server, and the driver that they tell you to use 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0', is not present in 2012 from what I can tell.     When SQL Server builds a fulltext index computer resources are consumed (IO/Memory/CPU) Similarly when you perform full text searches, resources are consumed. How can I get a gauge over a 24 hour period of the exact amount of CPU and IO(reads/writes) that fulltext is responsible for, in relation to global SQL Server resource usage. Are there any perfmon counters, DMVs or profiler traces I can use to help answer this question?

  • SQL Server Logs: missing date ranges

    I need to be able to export SQL Server logs into CSV files, which I can easily do with the export function. However in doing so I've noticed there's a range of dates missing from the SQL Server logs in Management Studio, two months actually. I'm wondering where these logs might be found, and if it's possible to reload them so I can view and then export them. They're strictly for informational purposes, but I do need them.   • Accessing Active Directory Role Membership through LDAP using SQL Server 2005

    I would like to get a list of Active Directory users along with the security groups they are members of using SQL Server 2005 linked servers. I have the query working to retrieve records but I'm not sure how to access the memberOf attribute (it is a multi-value LDAP attribute). I have this temporary to store the information: DROP TABLE #ADUSERGROUPS CREATE TABLE #ADUSERGROUPS ( sAMAccountName varchar(30), UserGroup varchar(50) ) Each group/user association should be one row. This is my SELECT statement: SELECT sAMAccountName,memberOf FROM OpenQuery(ADSI, '<LDAP://hqdc04/DC=nt,DC=avs>; (&(objectClass=User)(sAMAccountName=9695)(sn=*)(mail=*)(userAccountControl=512)); sAMAccountName,memberOf;subtree') I get this error msg: OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'ADSDSOObject' IRowset::GetData returned 0x40eda: Data status returned from the provider: [COLUMN_NAME=memberOf STATUS=DBSTATUS_E_CANTCONVERTVALUE], [COLUMN_NAME=sAMAccountName STATUS=DBSTATUS_S_OK]]. Msg 7346, Level 16, State 2, Line 2 Could not get the data of the row from the OLE DB provider 'ADSDSOObject'. Could not convert the data value due to reasons other than sign mismatch or overflow.

  • How to refactor this database to allow sync. with smart clients?

    Howdy, I have inherited the following database: http://i46.tinypic.com/einvjr.png (EDIT: I cannot post images, so here goes the link) This currently runs 100% online thru an Asp.Net web app , but some employees will need to have offline access to this database to either get documents or to insert new documents for later synchronization when back to the office. What changes need to be made to this database scheme to support such scenario (sync smart clients with central web database)? Thanks! ps. I'm not an developer/dba, i'm just an mechanic engineer tasked with changing this app, so, take it easy on me :D ps1. We're using MSSQL Server for the online central database and MSSQL Compact for the smart client. ps2. the ImageGuid field of the images table is used to save the images to the file system. The web app takes the guid and create folders according to the first 3 initial letters to persist the image to the file system. ps3. The users of the smart client not always get server data first and then go modifying to sync later the changes. Most of the time they start working completely offline (with a blank local database) and later sync the data to the server. ps4. All the users of the smart client app have an account at the web app.

    Hi, Can somebody tell me how to rename the DB server instance name and a DB name in SQL Server 2005? Right Now I Have SERVER/OLDNAME -- oldnameDB I want to change the server instance and also change the db name. I have tried: EXEC sp_renamedb 'oldName', 'newName' and that has changed the dbname as it appers in the tree directory. But, when I do "select @@servername" it is the old name. Also, the MDF and LDF files are still the old name. How do change instance and db names as a clean sweep across the server? Thanks.

  • Intermittent unavailability of an instance in a failover cluster while a standby node is offline in

    Hi everyone. I've got a small failover cluster that I run for the websites my company has. During a RAM upgrade of the standby server, our websites started to show errors about not being able to access the database server. I verified that the instance was indeed up and the server accessable via remote desktop. I also tried a SQL connection to it and it worked, but that might have been after it became available again. This happened on and off until we were able to roll back the hardware changes that were in progress on the standby server and we were able to bring it back up. There was nothing of interest in the SQL Server log, but there is a continous log for the whole duration of the problem, so there was no restart of the SQL Server service. The event viewer is of more interest, since it shows events relating to the heartbeat network card, but I don't know how that would affect the availability of the server, since the standby node is offline. I'd appreciate any help you can provide, it's not very redundant if the setup depends on the standby server being up. :) Here are the event logs from the time of the problem, I include all of them since I can't seem to see what could possibly be the cause of the problem.   • SQL Server 2008 R2 mirroring failing

    I have two Windows 2008 R2 (Amazon EC2) instances running SQL Server 2008 R2. I use 9TB striped disks (9x1TB EBS volumes) for storage. One server is running as principal and second one as mirror. Both started from the same image, database and tlog files located on striped disk. Mirror server failed 3 times in last 2 months with errors: EventID 823 The operating system returned error 2(The system cannot find the file specified.) to SQL Server during a write at offset 0x00000048058a00 in file 'D:\TLogs***_log.ldf'. Additional messages in the SQL Server error log and system event log may provide more detail. This is a severe system-level error condition that threatens database integrity and must be corrected immediately. Complete a full database consistency check (DBCC CHECKDB). This error can be caused by many factors; for more information, see SQL Server Books Online. and EventID 1454 Database mirroring will be suspended. Server instance 'xxxxxxxxxx' encountered error 823, state 6, severity 24 when it was acting as a mirroring partner for database '***'. The database mirroring partners might try to recover automatically from the error and resume the mirroring session. For more information, view the error log for additional error messages. followed by EventID 19019 The MSSQLSERVER service terminated unexpectedly. After this rebooting instance is necessary to restore mirroring. First two times I thought it was hardware related (striped disk failure) and relaunched instance on new hardware. But the issue is back after few weeks again. It only affects mirror instances. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks.

  • Log Shipping breaking daily on SQL Server 2005

    I am facing a somewhat serious problem with Log Shipping on SQL Server 2005 and I am having trouble to correct it, so I will try some help from SF's experts. I have a Windows 2003 Server (PROD) that ships transactional log backups to another two servers: STAND1: Windows 2003 Server with SQL Server 2005. STAND2: Windows 2008 R2 Server with SQL Server 2005. The problem is that Log Shipping to STAND2 is breaking for ~ 90 minutes some times of the day and returning back without intervention. The breaking occur at times when the backup file is larger (after reindexing, etc). I can see the message below logged on the COPY job: *** Error: The specified network name is no longer available The copy agent was breaking dozens times a day only to STAND2 server, and after the changes below "only" breaks ~ two times a day: The frequency of the backup job was changed from 5 minutes to 10 minutes. Instead of backing up the 4 databases to the same folder, the log backups are now saved on separated folders for each database. The backup job doesn't run 24hs now, and only for 14 hours a day, when people are working on the database. I configured the SQL Server instances on the three servers to limit the memory, leaving more memory to the OS. Now I don't know what to do. Any help will be much appreciated! Thanks!

    We have a lot going on in San Francisco this fall. One of the most personal exciting bits, for what will be my 4th or 5th Open World, is that this will be my FIRST as a member of Team Oracle. I’ve presented once before, but most years it was just me pressing flesh at the vendor booths. After 3-4 days of standing and talking, you’re ready to just go home and not do anything for a few weeks. This time I’ll have a chance to walk around and talk with our users and get a good idea of what’s working and what’s not. This year is going to be a bit crazy. Work wise I’ll be presenting twice, working a booth, and proctoring several of our Hands-On Labs.   • SQL 2008 Backups to UNC Share Failing 0xC002F210

    This problem is driving me NUTS!! We take backups of all of our production databases to a network share, which are then backed up to tape nightly. 8pm Mon-Fri - Full backup, followed by log backup 7am-7pm Mon-Fri, at half-hour interval - Log backup Our backups have been working in this manner since we migrated from SQL Server Standard 2000 to 2008, 3 years ago. Recently, the first log backup on Mondays have been failing. Not every time, but almost every time! The rest of the week, we've had no problems. I guess the issue may have something to do with the size of the log backup that's attempted after a weekend of no backups. Now onto the issue I need a fix for... All this week, every full backup on our biggest two databases have failed (Both backups < 1GB compressed). There's plenty of disk space on the source and destination servers. I'm guessing the issue is to do with the amount of time it takes to complete the backups of these databases, and/or the size of the backup files required to complete these backups. Changing the backup destination to local storage works fine (and very, very fast in comparison). From the Job History, I can find a few hints as to what the problem could be... Code: 0xC002F210 (Always this code, but a mix of the following descriptions...) "The operating system returned the error '64(failed to retrieve text for this error. Reason: 1815)' while attempting 'SetEndOfFile' on '\drserver\SQLBackups\Database.bak'. BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally. "The operating system returned the error '64(failed to retrieve text for this error. Reason: 1815)' while attempting 'FlushFileBuffers' on '\drserver\SQLBackups\Database.bak'. BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally. Please help save my hair and sanity!!
