  • Parse an XML file

    - by karan@dotnet
    The following code shows a simple method of parsing through an XML file/string. We can get the parent name, child name, attributes etc from the XML. The namespace System.Xml would be the only additional namespace that we would be using. string myXMl = "<Employees>" + "<Employee ID='1' Name='John Mayer'" + "Address='12th Street'" + "City='New York' Zip='10004'>" + "</Employee>" + "</Employees>"; XmlDocument xDoc = new XmlDocument();xDoc.LoadXml(myXMl);XmlNodeList xNodeList = xDoc.SelectNodes("Employees/child::node()");foreach (XmlNode xNode in xNodeList){ if (xNode.Name == "Employee") { string ID = xNode.Attributes["ID"].Value; //Outputs: 1 string Name = xNode.Attributes["Name"].Value;//Outputs: John Mayer string Address = xNode.Attributes["Address"].Value;//Outputs: 12th Street string City = xNode.Attributes["City"].Value;//Outputs: New York string Zip = xNode.Attributes["Zip"].Value; //Outputs: 10004 }} Lets look at another XML: string myXMl = "<root>" + "<parent1>..some data</parent1>" + "<parent2>" + "<Child1 id='1' name='Adam'>data1</Child1>" + "<Child2 id='2' name='Stanley'>data2</Child2>" + "</parent2>" + "</root>"; XmlDocument xDoc = new XmlDocument();xDoc.LoadXml(myXMl);XmlNodeList xNodeList = xDoc.SelectNodes("root/child::node()"); //Traverse the entire XML nodes.foreach (XmlNode xNode in xNodeList) { //Looks for any particular nodes if (xNode.Name == "parent1") { //some traversing.... } if (xNode.Name == "parent2") { //If the parent node has child nodes then //traverse the child nodes foreach (XmlNode xNode1 in xNode.ChildNodes) { string childNodeName = xNode1.Name; //Ouputs: Child1 string childNodeData = xNode1.InnerText; //Outputs: data1 //Loop through each attribute of the child nodes foreach (XmlAttribute xAtt in xNode1.Attributes) { string attrName = xAtt.Name; //Outputs: id string attrValue = xAtt.Value; //Outputs: 1 } } }}

  • Some SharePoint NDA Information

    - by Sahil Malik
    Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). Many years ago, at the last to last to last MVP summit, Microsoft was kind enough to share with us what they were thinking wayyyyyyyyyyyy ahead! I specially remember John Durant talking about the specific enhancements planned for SharePoint 2010 development experience. If you haven’t seen John Durant talking on stage, the guy has more enthusiasm than tiger woods in Amsterdam! The energy of his presentations is simply amazing. So, I pulled out my phone, and I snapped a picture! And, I emailed that picture to everyone in the MVP land, and Microsoft land, saying “We have evidence”, i.e. here are the promises that were made, and dammit we’ll see by the time you release SP2010 how many of these do you actually release. Here is the picture ladies and gentlemen -     It’s a good karate chop action shot isn’t it? Of course, we were all immediately warned not to share any of this seriously strictly NDA information at the time. Well, now that the information is out in the world, I can finally share now, this small tidbit of how far ahead Microsoft is thinking in their plans. Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised, if today that they have a very clear idea what SharePoint vNext will be all about, or should I say vNextvNext? Have fun! Comment on the article ....

  • Code Trivia #4

    - by João Angelo
    Got the inspiration for this one in a recent stackoverflow question. What should the following code output and why? class Program { class Author { public string FirstName { get; set; } public string LastName { get; set; } public override string ToString() { return LastName + ", " + FirstName; } } static void Main() { Author[] authors = new[] { new Author { FirstName = "John", LastName = "Doe" }, new Author { FirstName = "Jane", LastName="Doe" } }; var line1 = String.Format("Authors: {0} and {1}", authors); Console.WriteLine(line1); string[] serial = new string[] { "AG27H", "6GHW9" }; var line2 = String.Format("Serial: {0}-{1}", serial); Console.WriteLine(line2); int[] version = new int[] { 1, 0 }; var line3 = String.Format("Version: {0}.{1}", version); Console.WriteLine(line3); } } Update: The code will print the first two lines // Authors: Doe, John and Doe, Jane // Serial: AG27H-6GHW9 and then throw an exception on the third call to String.Format because array covariance is not supported in value types. Given this the third call of String.Format will not resolve to String.Format(string, params object[]), like the previous two, but to String.Format(string, object) which fails to provide the second argument for the specified format and will then cause the exception.

  • Friday Tips #4

    - by Chris Kawalek
    It's time once again for our Friday tip. Our question today is about how to determine how much video RAM to allocate for your virtual machines in a VDI deployment: Question: How much video RAM do I really need on my VirtualBox VMs? Answer by John Renko, Consulting Developer, Oracle: The answer is in the VirtualBox admin guide but it's seldom followed correctly, usually resulting in excess unused RAM to be allocated. The formula for determining how much RAM to allocate is shown below for a 32 bit fullscreen 22" monitor supporting 1680x1050: bit depth / 8 x horizontal res x vertical res / 1024 / 1024 = MB RAM Which translates to: 32 bits / 8 x 1680 x 1050 / 1024 / 1024 = 6.7 MB If you wanted to support dual 22" monitors, you would need twice that, so 13.4 MB. Anything in excess of what is needed is readily allocated but not used and would be better suited for running more VMs! Thanks John, that tip should help folks squeeze a little more out of their VDI servers. And remember, if you have a question for us, use hash tag #AskOracleVirtualization on Twitter. We'll see you next week with another tip! -Chris

  • JavaOne 2012 Day 1

    - by Geertjan
    Day 1, Sunday, started the night before for those attending the NetBeans Party at Johnny Foley's: Invitations had been sent out prior to the party to all speakers for NetBeans Day, as well as speakers in JavaOne sessions where NetBeans is going to be used. That turns out to be around 40 people, who hung out until quite late, with snacks and drinks. Next day, NetBeans Day had most sessions with completely packed rooms, which means there were around 300 people! Panel discussions around central themes in the NetBeans ecosystem (Java EE, JavaFX, and NetBeans Platform) were held, which resulted in a whole bunch of people up on stage throughout the day, such as this group of speakers in the Java EE session: From left to right above you see Sean Comerford from ESPN.com, John Yeary the Java EE panel moderator and JUG lead from Greenville, Cagatay Civici the PrimeFaces lead developer, Glenn Holmer long time NetBeans enthusiast (more on him below) from the Weyco Group, and NetBeans/Java EE book author David Heffelfinger. There were panels just like the above for JavaFX and the NetBeans Platform too, with very interesting and dynamic talks, such as one by JavaFX book authors Gail and Paul Anderson, who showed off this brilliant JavaFX/NetBeans Platform mashup: NetBeans Day ended with a good discussion about how to get involved in the NetBeans community, wrapping up with an award ceremony with two very special NetBeans community awards: Then everyone caught buses to the Masonic Auditorium, where 4 hours of keynotes took place. This is what the room looked like: The 4 hours ended with a very well received HTML5/NetBeans demo, showing of NetBeans IDE 7.3 features, by NetBeans director John Ceccarelli. And I liked this slide during an earlier keynote session by Oracle VP Hasan Rizvi: There was really a lot of love for NetBeans during the JavaOne keynote sessions and I don't remember hearing any other IDE being mentioned, in any way at all. Next there was the Duke's Choice Award ceremony, outside the Hilton in a cool lounge area, where, among others, Timon and Angelo from the NetBeans Platform community received their awards for AgroSense and MICE. In between all of the above, I met very many friends from previous conferences, as well as several new ones. It was clearly a great start to the conference. Looking forward to what the rest of the week will bring!

  • Integrated Reporting Is Getting Closer

    - by Evelyn Neumayr
    By John O’Rourke, Vice President, Product Marketing, Oracle Oracle recently sponsored a webcast on CFO.com titled:  The CFO Playbook on Integrated Reporting: Integrating Sustainability into Financial Disclosures which focused on why top companies in the U.S. and overseas are incorporating sustainability content into their annual reports and other financial disclosures.  The webcast speakers, James Margolis, partner with Environmental Resources Management (ERM), a global provider of environmental, health, safety, risk and sustainability consulting services (EHSS) and Mike Wallace, Director of the Global Reporting Initiative's Focal Point USA, discussed the benefits of integrating sustainability reporting with traditional financial reporting. They noted how investors, corporate directors, lenders and most recently, the Securities and Exchange Commission, use this information to better understand, benchmark and value companies. They also talked about the November 2012 release of an Integrated Reporting Framework by the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC).  Read the press release and link to the framework here.  The shift towards integrated financial and sustainability reporting is gaining momentum with a number of global stock exchanges endorsing this approach in 2012.  Visit these links to listen to the webcast and download the slides. You can also view a demonstration of Oracle's solution for integrated financial and sustainability reporting. • Extreme Portability: OpenJDK 7 and GlassFish 3.1.1 on Power Mac G5!

    - by MarkH
    Occasionally you hear someone grumble about platform support for some portion or combination of the Java product "stack". As you're about to see, this really is not as much of a problem as you might think. Our friend John Yeary was able to pull off a pretty slick feat with his vintage Power Mac G5. In his words: Using a build script sent to me by Kurt Miller, build recommendations from Kelly O'Hair, and the great work of the BSD Port team... I created a new build of OpenJDK 7 for my PPC based system using the Zero VM. The results are fantastic. I can run GlassFish 3.1.1 along with all my enterprise applications. I recently had the opportunity to pick up an old G5 for little money and passed on it. What would I do with it? At the time, I didn't think it would be more than a space-consuming novelty. Turns out...I could have had some fun and a useful piece of hardware at the same time. Maybe it's time to go bargain-hunting again. For more information about repurposing classic Apple hardware and learning a few JDK-related tricks in the process, visit John's site for the full article, available here. All the best,Mark

  • Java, server client TCP communication ends with RST

    - by Senne
    I'm trying to figure out if this is normal. Because without errors, a connection should be terminated by: FIN -> <- ACK <- FIN ACK -> I get this at the end of a TCP connection (over SSL, but i also get it with non-encrypted): From To 1494 server client TCP search-agent > 59185 [PSH, ACK] Seq=25974 Ack=49460 Win=63784 Len=50 1495 client server TCP 59185 > search-agent [ACK] Seq=49460 Ack=26024 Win=63565 Len=0 1496 client server TCP 59185 > search-agent [PSH, ACK] Seq=49460 Ack=26024 Win=63565 Len=23 1497 client server TCP 59185 > search-agent [FIN, ACK] Seq=49483 Ack=26024 Win=63565 Len=0 1498 server client TCP search-agent > 59185 [PSH, ACK] Seq=26024 Ack=49484 Win=63784 Len=23 1499 client server TCP 59185 > search-agent [RST, ACK] Seq=49484 Ack=26047 Win=0 Len=0 The client exits normally and reaches socket.close, shouldn't then the connection be shut down normally, without a reset?
