  Which is faster for read access on an EC2 instance; the "local" drive or an attached EBS volume? I have some data that needs to be persisted so have placed this on an EBS volume. I'm using OpenSolaris, so this volume has been attached as a ZFS pool. However, I have a large chunk of EC2 disk space that's going to go unused, so I'm considering re-purposing this as a ZFS cache volume but I don't want to do this if the disk access is going to be slower than that of the EBS volume as it would potentially have a detrimental effect.

• How can I setup my local Nginx server so I can edit the files?

  I have my local development machine running Arch Linux, Nginx, PHP-FPM and MySQL. In order for the websites I am working on to run the files need to be owned by the http user. The files are currently located in folders like this: /srv/http/site1/ /srv/http/site2/ When I use the following chown command on the http folder the sites work fine, but I cannot edit the files with my user: chown -R http.users /srv/http When I do this the sites do not work, but I can edit the files: chown -R shane.http /srv/http How can I make it so that my user can edit the files, and the web server can run them at the same time?   I just want to know whether this is a flaw or not in Bittorrent system. Let us assume that I am member of a Private Torrent site which requires me to maintain a specific upload to download ratio. Will this work: I create a torrent of a large file say [ Fedora Linux ~ 4 GB ] and upload it to the tracker I download the same torrent using my ID and start it on another machine on LAN or a Virtual machine Both clients have Local Peer Discovery enabled, so they will find 'em [ not via DHT ] and start x'ferring data using LAN bandwidth at LAN speeds. Though both uploads and downloads will increase, my ratio will also increase If I reiterate the entire process 'n' times, the numerator in the "RATIO" i.e Upload will become so large that the effect of downloads on ratio will become less. I want to know whether this is legitimate???

• Using local proxy to specify used NIC on Windows 7?

  I'm running Windows 7 and have 2 NIC installed, both are connected to the Internet (nic#1 LTE, nic#2 DSL). Windows 7 will only allow me to specify a binding order and a metric on which interface to chose but i can't specify this on an application level. My Idea was to use a local proxy server and use the proxy server whenever i want to use nic#2. I tried wingate and free proxy, both applications will let me chose the interface i want to use but this setting seems to have no effect?   I've got Netatalk & Avahi running on a local Ubuntu server--I use two different userids, "afp" for Time Machine and "stew" to access my media files etc. In order to mount a shared directory on my server, I have to click "Connect As..." and enter my userid/password every time, because it always tries to log in using Time Machine's userid. I'm not sure if this is because that userid is set as default, or just because it's the last userid that logged in to that server--either way: Is there a way to change the default userid for connecting to a given server? Mega extra credit: I'd love to have this automated, such that my userid, "stew", is always logged in (and heck, it'd be great to have the directories always mounted, too!) whenever the server is available. • Can remote LogMeIn Hamachi users access our local LAN?

  Unknown to me, one of the kids has installed LogMeIn Hamachi on his PC so that he can access and play on his pal's Minecraft server, and vice versa. One of the things I did was disable the Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks on the Hamachi NIC in Windows 7's Network Connections. However, my lack of fu when it comes to these types of services is leaving me feeling a little uncomfortable about him using this. Is there anything I should be worried about here? For example, can his friends access our local LAN (which has a number of NAS boxes with unsecured shares) and get up to no good?

• How can I copy the output from a remote command into the local clipboard?

  I use iTerm2 as my terminal client in Mac OS X. On the local system I can use pbcopy and pbpaste to transfer data between the system clipboard and the terminal, but of course this doesn't work when you're ssh'ed to another machine. Is there some way which I can take the result of a command and copy it to the clipboard automatically? Perhaps an applescript to grab the text on the iTerm windows, then get the next to last line? For instance, if I wanted to copy the current working directory: I run pwd, then use the mouse to select the text, and then press command + c. Is there any better / faster / automatic way of doing this? I'm not looking for a bulletproof solution that would work for every command (eg: might not work when there is a huge scrollback) - I'm just looking for something to make this task that I do quite often a little less tedious. Update I'm looking into using screen to do this, but I'm still not sure if it is possible.

  Hi, i would like to limit the number of concurrent open TCP streams from the the same IP to the server's (local) port. Let's say 4 concurrent conncetions. How can this be done with ip tables? the closest thing, that i've found was: In Apache, is there a way to limit the number of new connections per second/hour/day? iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -i eth0 -m state --state NEW -m recent --set iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -i eth0 -m state --state NEW -m recent --update --seconds 86400 --hitcount 100 -j REJECT But this limitation just messures the number of new connections over the time. This might be good for controlling HTTP traffic. But this is not a good solution for me, since my TCP streams usually have a lifetime between 5 minutes and 2 hours. thanks a lot in advance for any reply :)

  I just started using the file search program Everything at work to search through documentation on our shared drives. This is after disappointments with Google Desktop and Windows Search. I love the speed of Everything, but I wish it were able to index other shared folders. My makeshift solution was to somehow force Windows to recognize the necessary shared folders as local drives, then add them to the index list. I have also considered using SyncToy, but this requires downloading all data to my drive, which could be terabytes of information - obviously not a good idea on a small company network. What would be the best solution here?

  I had some serious lag to resolve website address and sometimes things simply wouldn't load (pages kept loading for 5+ minutes without even a timeout error). So I had setup a local dns server/cache using BIND on Leopard and Snow Leopard. Now that I have Lion, i have the same problem, but the instructions no longer apply to Lion and I can't find a way to do it. Has anyone attempted to do this? Are there viable alternatives for DNS servers on OS X 10.7? For those who are wondering I already tried several external DNS server. Only my computer has this issue on the network.

• Winamp trashed its local media library database when I blocked it on my firewall -- Is this supposed to happen?

  Frankly, I don't see a compelling reason why Winamp needs to be using my network, as all I do is listen to songs from my local media. However, it appears to exact revenge when I try to ensure it can't on my firewall by completely eradicating my media library list (which includes all my song ratings and such). I was not able to recover this data, as I hadn't exported the database prior, and the actual database file was completely wiped. My other playlists and the actual media itself appear not to be effected, though. Is this supposed to happen, by chance? Edit: I wasn't able to get it to replicate this behavior with a different firewall+Winamp version. Hmm.

  From terminal and trying to uninstall macports, I ran a command, rm -rf / macports...., that erased bunch of stuff. I feel ashamed about this, not realizing the space after /. Since then, mysql is running but I cannot execute any of the mysql commands because it is not under /usr/local/bin/ I went ahead an reinstall mysql but without luck. What steps do you recommend on doing in order to be able to run mysql, mysqlduml, mysqladmin, from terminal? I can access databases from phpmyadmin, so mysql is running, don't ask me how.

  For some reason I'm receiving numerous alerts, for a variety of processes, from my firewall. These are all related to ICMPv6 and are the same, apart from the process for which the alert was generated. 'Application/Process' Is trying to Access the Internet Remote Address - fe80::7191:6bd1:e5fa:58af [The Link Local Address] ICMP Type = 1 [Destination Unreachable] ICMP Code = 3 [Address Unreachable] Protocol = ICMPv6 Allow or Block If I Allow or Block, the alert never reoccurs. I understand what the various elements of these messages represent, I just can't fathom out why they are being generated. What could be the reason for these Alerts? • Windows has automatically mapped my network drives to my local disk - how do I stop it doing so?

  Windows XP decided when I logged on that because the network was unavailable at the time that two of my network drives should be mapped to my local drive so that data would be saved. All well and good but I need it to stop now so I can use my network drives again. I can't find anything relating to the feature but I can't remember the specifics of the message it gave me when it started this operating mode and Google searches for the sort of terms above leads me to a slew of irrelevancies. • Can I use Veritias Storage Manager to provide HA storage using server-local storage?

  I have a need to provide an high-availability ftp/http file repository. Upload will happne to one server, but the uploaded file must be immediately visisble on all other servers I can handle the failover of the servers themeselves using load balancers. But in the event of failure of one server, the other servers must see the same contents of the repository. Normally, I'd use a SAN for this, but in this case the data centre standards do not allow SAN/external storage - all storage will be local to the servers. Cam I use Veritas Storage Manager (or any other product) to manage mirroring hte contents between servers in this way? Or does that require a SAN? I couldn't tell either way from a quick look at the data sheets etc.

  I want to create program which will be in use for few computers connected in local network. Basically the program aim is to keep track of all tables in a bar ( lets say ), which are reserved. When some user book a table as reserved the program should broadcast the table number to all other Pc's and mark the table as reserved. After i updated to win 8.1 it first takes me to a login and its not set to me microsoft account but as other user.   Hi, I have a simple setup, a WPF application running on the machine and a WCF service hosted within a Windows Service on the same machine (always on the same machine). When i debug on one computer i can easily access the local WCF Service. When i run it on another machine i get an error: "The server has rejected the client credentials." Some of my observations are, that at my local machine i have no domain/network. Its my home machine. When at a customers site, it will not run, and gives the above error. Anyone got any ideas on why this is different on these computers? /Brian
