• General zoom algorithm for drawing program

  My GUI toolkit, wxPython provides some methods for implementing a user zoom factor, however the quality isn't too good. I'm looking for ideas on how to create a zooming feature, which I know is complicated. I have a bitmap representing my canvas which is drawn to. This is displayed inside a scrolled window. Problems I forsee: - performance when zoomed in and panning around the canvas - difficulties with "real" coordinates and zoomed in coordinates - image quality not degrading with the zoom Using wxPython's SetUserScale() on its device contexts presents image quality like this - this is with a 1px line, at 30% zoomed in. I'm just wondering the general steps I'll need to take and the challenges I'll encounter. Thanks for any suggestions

• How can I override an HTML "rules" attribute using CSS?

  The DITA Open Toolkit automatically inflicts some inline table attributes when one publishes to HTML, including frame="border" and rules="all". I need to override this "rules" attribute using CSS styles for cells, and while I can get the desired result in IE and Chrome, Firefox puts solid black gridlines in the table and refuses to budge on the matter. Obviously I can't edit the HTML, company policy is to not edit the XSLT, so how can I remove these gridlines using CSS alone? I've tried various cunning combinations of border-xxxxxx styles and given them !important declarations to no effect. Thanks, Andrew

• DataGridCheckBoxColumn immediate binding

  Hi. I'm using the WPF Toolkit Datagrid and have one column which is a DataGridCheckBoxColumn bound to a bool property on my ViewModel. My problem is that I wan't the property to get it's value updated immediately when the user checks or unchecks the checkbox. Now you have to navigate away from the cell in order to have the property updated. It's a checkbox. It can't be in the middle of editing like a textbox can... Any help would be appreciated. /J

  I'm working on a toolkit (sort of a live-CD Lisp-in-a-Box) for people new to Common Lisp, and I want to make sure it is broadly satisfying. What is attractive to you about Lisp? What do/did/would you need to get you started and keep you interested? What I have so far: SBCL 10.22, Emacs 22.3, SLIME, and LTK bundled together and configured on a Linux live-CD that boots entirely to RAM. • ASP.NET (AJAX) UI Design Tools for Artistically Challenged?

  I'm building an application but I'm artistically challenged and I'd rather not spend my time writing widgets (e.g. ability to collapse/expand/close/drag-drop) if there is already controls available. I've worked with the Microsoft AJAX Control Toolkit - but these tools still require a lot of work to get a working widget (which in my case, won't look too pretty). The CollapsiblePanel is pretty nice - but then you have to program in the minimize button, close button, maximize button, etc. Looking for suggestions that will help me design better UI faster...

• Beginner's resources/introductions to classification algorithms.

  Hi, everybody. I am entirely new to the topic of classification algorithms, and need a few good pointers about where to start some "serious reading". I am right now in the process of finding out, whether machine learning and automated classification algorithms could be a worthwhile thing to add to some application of mine. I already scanned through "How to Solve It: Modern heuristics" by Z. Michalewicz and D. Fogel (in particular, the chapters about linear classifiers using neuronal networks), and on the practical side, I am currently looking through the WEKA toolkit source code. My next (planned) step would be to dive into the realm of Bayesian classification algorithms. Unfortunately, I am lacking a serious theoretical foundation in this area (let alone, having used it in any way as of yet), so any hints at where to look next would be appreciated; in particular, a good introduction of available classification algorithms would be helpful. Being more a craftsman and less a theoretician, the more practical, the better... Hints, anyone?

• How do I start a XUL Runner application maximized?

  I've started developing my first app with XUL and I've run into a problem that I can't seem to solve. All I want to do is have my app start maximized. I've set the sizemode attribute to maximized on my top level window element but that has no effect. My prefs.js file has the following line: pref("toolkit.defaultChromeFeatures", "chrome,centerscreen,menubar,resizable,status,toolbar,scrollbars"); This also does not work. My window appears and it only has a close button (X) and does not have a minimize or maximize button. Any ideas???

Has there been any discussion that anyone is aware of regarding this issue? Also does anyone have any open source suggestions for 'proper' AJAX gridviews?   I have two instances of QObject subclasses and two QMetaMethod instances of signal in one of objects and slot in another object. I want to connect this signal and slot with each other. I've looked through the qobject.h file and find that SIGNAL() and SLOT() macro are just add "1" or "2" character to the beginning of method signature so it looks like it should be possible to add the same character to the beginning of string returned by QMetaMethod::signature() but this approach depends on some undocumented internals of toolkit and may be broken at any time by a new version of Qt. Does anybody know reliable way to connect signals and slots through their QMetaMethod reflection representation?

• Is it worth the time to switch from AjaxControlToolkit to jQuery?

  I keep hearing all these things about how awesome jQuery is and how the AjaxControlToolkit sucks. Unfortunately, I only heard about this after I built my entire WebForms site using the toolkit. Now I am considering switching, if not entirely, mostly to jQuery. This is partially for the experience (having never coded in Javascript or used any frameworks) and partially because I think I have more control over jQuery. There is no pressing need to switch, but I'm considering doing it anyway. Is it worth tackling the learning curve for jQuery just to get the experience, of should I leave my working site well enough alone?

• Robocopy for Windows 2003 doesn't support /DST option

  Does anyone know if it is possible to download the latest robocopy for Windows 2003. The latest version provides the /DST option which ignores time stamps changed due to BST (British Summer Time). Every time we do a build and sync our servers when we go +1/-1 hour it takes hours instead of minutes because it sees everything as changed. I noticed it is included automatically with Vista/Win7 but the Resource toolkit that I downloaded doesn't include a new version of robocopy for Win Server 2003. If there is a place to download it from & will it also work on Windows Server 2003? Thanks.

• Combining features from other projects in an ASP.NET MVC application

  Hello, I am writing an ASP.NET MVC application that combines a set of features from existing applications. The new application is suppose to use UI features and logic created (especially for this purpose) in the existing applications. For that reason I wanted to create in the existing applications some kind of a "blackbox" that I will be able to drop in my new application along with a matching connection string, and it will work independently, binding data on it's own. I thought about using partial views, but I am having trouble with passing the model data to it, since the controller of the new application should not know about the model of the existing applications. I can not use ASP.NET WebForms, since my application should be a "postback-less" application, and ASP.NET AJAX toolkit or frameworks alike are out of the question. How do I stop worrying and learn to love the weak typing? Are there best practices for variable naming that help make var types human readable? Another thing I have trouble with is getting by without my trusted compiler errors and warnings. I'm getting along with firebug. Is there anything else I should have in my toolkit?

• Halting Django's dev server via page request?

  I'm looking at writing a portable, light-weight Python app. As the "GUI toolkit" I'm most familiar with — by a wide margin! — is HTML/CSS/JS, I thought to use Django as a framework for the project, using its built-in "development server" (manage.py runserver). I've been banging on a proof-of-concept for a couple hours and the only real problem I've encountered so far is shutting down the server once the user has finished using the app. Ideally, I'd like there to be a link on the app's pages which shuts down the server and closes the page, but nothing I see in the Django docs suggests this is possible. Can this be done? For that matter, is this a reasonable approach for writing a small, portable GUI tool?

• Java equivalent for database schema changes like South for Django?

  I've been working on a Django project using South to track and manage database schema changes. I'm starting a new Java project using Google Web Toolkit and wonder if there is an equivalent tool. For those who don't know, here's what South does: Automatically recognize changes to my Python database models (add/delete columns, tables etc.) Automatically create SQL statements to apply those changes to my database Track the applied schema migrations and apply them in order Allow data migrations using Python code. For example, splitting a name field into a first-name and last-name field using the Python split() function I haven't decided on my Java ORM yet, but Hibernate looks like the most popular. For me, the ability to easily make database schema changes will be an important factor.
