  • Why do fonts sometimes look "fat" on Mac OS X?

    Sometimes when resuming from suspend, the fonts in Mac OS X look "fatter" than normal. Unfortunately right now I can't get my Macbook Pro to exhibit the "normal" behavior for comparison, it has been abnormal yesterday and today. If I can get screenshots of what I think is 'normal', I'll add them. "Fixing" this has been random. I use an external monitor, and sometimes unplugging it and plugging back in, or even turning it off and back on has worked. Sometimes with the display attached (or not) detecting displays works. Sometimes logging out or rebooting entirely is what it takes. Displays used: Macbook Pro 15" built-in display Dell 27" LCD (2009 model) Software where I see this happen, at least most noticably: Firefox (screenshots below) iTerm Things MacIrssi (screenshots below) I am using Mac OS X 10.5.8.   • Cycling tabs graphically

    Mac OS X's window manager is composed of: Applications Windows Tabs By default on OS X, you can cycle over applications with the famous ?? shortcut. In addition to this, I use a little utility called Witch which enables cycling (graphically) over windows too(I've defined it on ??). Unfortunately, it does not currently support tabs cycling... Would you have any suggestion for this? I know I already can ^? for this, but I'm looking for a graphical utility where you are not blind during cycling. Thank you.

  • How does one open multiple tabs in TextWrangler?

    No, I'm not bluffing. I really can't figure this out. The setup: I went to File -> Open, and then selected a directory rather than a file. As expected, a directory tree opened on the left side of my document. Hooray! I can easily view the files' structure in my Rails project. So, I make a few changes in a file, and then I click on a different file in the directory tree. My problem: TextWrangler then asks me whether I want to save my changes. Huh? I say "No", and the new document doesn't open at all. Great. I try hitting Command+N (new document). A new window opens. Ughhhh. How the heck do I open documents in a new tab? Note: I have set the "New & opened documents" behavior to "Open in the front window". This does not change the behavior described (i.e. when a directory is opened rather than a single file).

  • Mighty Mouse is jumping around on screen

    Hi there, I have a really annoying problem with my mighty mouse since a couple of weeks now. When moving my mouse (mightymouse) sometimes it jumps (about once in 30minutes) directly to a (propably) random spot of my screen. I cleaned the mightymouse several times and there is definately no hair or the like, and the desk is not the problem as well - I have the same problem with my other mighty mouse at home. Since I don't have any other mouse i couldn't test whether this relates to the mighty mouse or the mouse in general. Has anyone experienced such issues as well? Is there a solution?     "Focus follows mouse" or "sloppy focus" is a feature common to X11 window managers on Linux/Unix, including GNOME, KDE, CDE, XFCE and window managers like Enlightenment, Fluxbox and Window Maker. It is also available via TweakUI on Windows. Some individual applications on OS X, like iTerm support it. What is it? Simply put, the window where the mouse pointer is has focus, rather than having to click a window for it to gain focus. Does the native GUI for OS X support this, with some hidden setting? Or, is there a good third party application that will do this?

  • How to get files that are dragged on Aquamacs (or opened via Quicksilver) to open in the same frame

    In Aquamacs 2.0 preview 6, when opening new files externally (e.g., via Quicksilver or via dragging files on the Aquamacs icon) they always open in new frames (i.e., new windows). I would prefer new files to be opening in the same frame, just in a new buffer (possibly with tabs turned on). I already unchecked the option "Show Buffers in new Frames", but that only seems to affect the behavior of the built-in open command (Command-o). Are there any options for this or some other way to modify this behavior?

    I have a collection of .tif files but when I open them on Mac OS X 10.5 they show up as solid black and I don't know why. thanks Upon further inspection at really high brightness there are some out of focus objects viewable. It looks as if I am getting the first couple bits of each pixel but not the entire range of values.

  • Can't open cocoa emacs from terminal using open -a

    I installed emacs on my MacBook Air running Mac OS X 10.6.5 from this site http://emacsformacosx.com/. I believe this is what used to be called cocoa emacs. I dragged it into my Application folder and it works fine when I run it from there. I want to be able to run it from the Terminal. After some googling, I tried open -a /Application/Emacs.app foo.txt (foo.txt was and existing file). I got two emacs windows - one with welcome screen and one with foo.txt loaded. I tried a few applications in the /Applications directory and they did not seem to behave like this. I had installed it using my own account (an admin account) so after doing ls -l on /Application I noticed that the owner and group were different from the other entries in this folder. I recursively changed the owner and group to root and wheel, like the others, but this did not help. The only thing that looks funny now is that there that ls -l show a @ character which has something to do with extended attributes but I don't know how to check these. Any suggestions on what to check next? Is using the open command the only to run the program? Can I simulate what it does using a shell script?

  • MacBook Pro 10.6 losing dns service, network connection still functional if you know the ip address.

    MacBook pro connected to a wireless network (not sure about wired) I lose DNS. I still have a functioning connection and as long as I know the ip address of the website, server... for example skype works, ssh name@ipaddress, .... Things can be working properly and then just quit, Once I was im via skype and lost dns skype continued to work. This has happened in multiple locations on private and public networks. What does not work/fix it: Resetting router changing dns server on computer or router connecting to another network removing the airport interface and adding it back flushing dns The only solution seems to be a restart. A solution to this would be great, but any ideas of this to try would be great. Even a sure way to reproduce this would be useful. Maybe related question: But this is most definitely not true for me. "if I refresh enough -- 3 to 4 times --, it will usually pull up the site. " Here are some tests from terminal.   • How come my Intel 520 180GB SSD performs extremely poorly?

    I recently installed a new Intel 520 series 180GB SSD in my brand new MacBook Pro. The system is as follows: Model: MacBook Pro 15-inch, Late 2011 (MacBookPro8,2) Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7 Memory: 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB Software: Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 Main Drive Bay: Intel 520-series 180GB SATA-3 (6GB/s negotiated link) SSD (Firmware: 400i) [80GB free] Optical Bay: Toshiba 5400 RPM 750GB SATA-2 HDD Trim: Enabled (according to Trim Enabler App) And here are the speeds I'm getting: Read: 412 MB/s Write: 186 MB/s What have I done wrong? Results expected: Read/write both 500MB/s I have seen benchmarks with lesser SSD:s (SATA-2 even) outperform my write-speeds by far. Also, Intel 520 SSD:s are supposed to be the top class of SSD:s. Trim Enabler report: This looks a bit odd compared to screenshots from their site: These is the defined S.M.A.R.T attributes (taken from Intel): And here are my S.M.A.R.T attributes read using smartctl tool from smartmontools: They don't seem very compatible. I'm going to try and look for a S.M.A.R.T attributes reader tool for OS X which might support Intel 520 series.

  • Testing Firewire 800 port on MacBook Pro

    I am having trouble getting my MacBook pro to mount an external Firewire hard drive. I am able to mount the disk no problem on other Macs, just not my machine. I haven't received any errors from my machine, and don't see anything related to the Firewire port in the logs. Are there good diagnostic tools for this type of problem that come with the Mac? other free alternatives ?

  • Delete ARP cache on Mac OS when moving from one Wifi network to the other

    I am facing wireless connectivity problems when I move from one Wifi network to the other. Here is how it happens: I am at my friends place. I connect to his Wifi. His Wifi router ip address is 192.168.0.1. Everything is fine I close my laptop, come back to my house, open my laptop and I connect to the Wifi Network at my place. Different ESSID, but the Wifi router address is the same 192.168.0.1. At this point I cant get to anything on the internet. To debug I try to see if I can ping the router (192.168.0.1), I cant. I get a no route to host. Meanwhile airport tells me Im connected to Wifi. I see the arp cache and I see a permanent entry for 192.168.0.1 ? (192.168.0.1) at 5c:d9:98:65:73:6c on en1 permanent [ethernet] This permanent bit looks problematic. I go ahead and delete the arp cache entry and all is fine with the world until I go back to my friends place where the same situation plays out. Now my question is, why the hell is this happening? If there is no way around it, can I run a script on Wifi connect/disconnect to clear out the arp cache?   • Wordpress Permissions OS X & MAMP

    I have installed several local versions of Wordpress for development purposes. After the install I can create posts, pages and edit admin options. However as soon as try to upload images which would be saved in wp_content/uploads I get an error: Upload Error: Unable to create directory ...../blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/05. Is its parent directory writable by the server? Looks like MAMP server runs as user _www The blog directory is owned by User1 and the group User1 _www is not in the User1 group, should it be? I do not want to chmod 777 or 765 on the directories just to get it going. Googled up a couple of references: http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_File_Permissions in "Permission Scheme for WordPress" All files should be owned by your user (ftp) account on your web server, and should be writable by that account. On shared hosts, files should never be owned by the webserver process itself (sometimes this is www, or apache, or nobody user). Any file that needs write access from WordPress should be owned or group-owned by the user account used by the WordPress (which may be different than the server account). For example, you may have a user account that lets you FTP files back and forth to your server, but your server itself may run using a separate user, in a separate usergroup, such as dhapache or nobody. If WordPress is running as the FTP account, that account needs to have write access, i.e., be the owner of the files, or belong to a group that has write access. In the latter case, that would mean permissions are set more permissively than default (for example, 775 rather than 755 for folders, and 664 instead of 644). User and group are User1 (which is admin). Running "ps aux | grep httpd" is running as _www So I think this means Wordpress is running as user _www. So the advice seems contradictory: "files should never be owned by the webserver process" i.e. _www but then later it says "Any file that needs write access from WordPress should be owned or group-owned by the user account used by the WordPress" So isn't this _www again? Another search found this url http://dancingengineer.com/computing/2009/07/how-to-install-wordpress-on-mac-os-x-leopard States Which says: My preferred way to do this is to change the group of the wordpress directory and its contents to _www and give write permissions to the group. Keep the owner as your "username". $ cd /Users/"username"/Sites $ sudo chown -R username:_www wordpress_directory $ sudo chmod -R g+w wordpress_directory However, when I tried this, it did not work for automatic upgrades to newer versions of WordPress although it worked for automatically updating the .htaccess file for pretty permalinks. It is not entirely clear to me what should be done. This last suggestion seems to be saying change the group from User1 to _www and give the group write access, but Wordpress upgrades won't work. Is this the right solution? I would have thought there would be a clear way to set this up on OS X 10.6? Be great if there was a plugin that could run a script for each of the main OS's that Wordpress runs on.

  • User directory in PATH in zsh: ~ Does Not Work

    I'm doing this in my .zshrc PATH="~/scripts:$PATH" and if I do echo $PATH it appears as the first thing in the path. Yet this directory isn't included in the executable path (nor for tab-completion). What am I doing wrong? ls ~/scripts shows the directory as expected. Edit: This works, though... I guess ~ doesn't work in the path? #PATH="~/scripts:$PATH" PATH="/Users/yar/scripts:$PATH"

  • Uninstalling Silverlight 4 beta on OS X

    I want to downgrade to SL3 on my Mac after accidently installing SL4 Beta. I've tried the SL3 uninstall procedure: rm -rf /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/Silverlight.plugin rm -rf /Library/Receipts/Silverlight*.pkg rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/Microsoft/Silverlight But still get an error message when I try to install SL3 saying there is a newer version there. Anyone got any input on how to do this ?
