  • What are different ways to reduce latency between a server and a web application? [closed]

    this is a question about a web application that provides SOAP web services. For the sake of this question, this web app is hosted on a server SERVER B which is located in California. We have an automated, scheduled, process running on a server SERVER A, located in New York. This scheduled process is supposed to send SOAP messages to SERVER B every so often, but this process typically dies soon after starting. We have now been told by the vendor that reason why the process dies is because of the latency between SERVER A and SERVER B. The data traffic is routed through many diffent public networks. There is no dedicated line between SERVER A and SERVER B. As a result I have been asked to look into ways to reduce the latency between SERVER A and SERVER B. So I wanted to ask, what are the different ways to reduce latency in a situation like this? For example, would it help to switch from HTTPS to some other secure protocol? (the thought here is that perhaps some other alternative would require fewer handshakes than HTTPS). Or would a VPN help? If a VPN would reduce the latency, how would it do that? NOTE: I am not looking for an explicit answer that would work in my specific situation. I am more like looking just for a simple list of what technologies could be used for this. I will still have to evaluate the technologies and discuss them internally with others, so the list would just be a starting point. Here I am assuming that there exists very few ways to reduce latency between two servers that communicate across public networks using HTTPS. Feel free to correct me if this assumption is wrong and please ask if there is a need for specific information. NOTE 2: A list of technologies is a specific answer to the question I stated in the title. NOTE 3: Its rather dumb to close this question when it is after all about me looking for information and furthermore this information can clearly be useful for others.     I can't delete C:\Config.Msi\75ce84f.rbf It's not causing any problems but it's a mystery I'd like to solve, preferably before the next reboot because it's scheduled for deletion then (see pendmoves). it's not readonly, system or hidden it's not in use by another process (according to Process Explorer) the NT security permissions aren't the problem either - I am the owner and have Full Control ; as a double-check, the Effective Permissions tab shows that I have permission to delete. Yet trying to delete the file gives "Access is Denied" from both Explorer and cmd. I can however rename it or move it to another folder on the same drive. I can also read it and Virustotal says it's clean which is what I would expect (it's just a Windows Installer temp file - a copy of some DLL I think). The relevant line from Process Monitor is: 6:52:14.3726983 PM 112 Explorer.EXE SetDispositionInformationFile C:\Config.Msi\75ce84f.rbf CANNOT DELETE Delete: True Write 1232 Background: I'm using XP SP2. I recently repaired my Adobe Reader installation to make it the default browser plugin again instead of Foxit. (there seems to be no UI to do it otherwise?) So the installer did its thing and then asked to reboot. As is my habit when rebooting is inconvenient I declined the offer and ran pendmoves to find out what files the installer had scheduled to move / delete. It wanted to delete two files with .rbf extension (rollback files) located in C:\Config.msi\. (this applies to both even though I've been speaking about one). So I tried to delete them manually and couldn't. Does anyone have any ideas what could be preventing deletion? (and I don't think it's malware even though I'm not running AV at the moment)

  • PBS batch jobs - the qalter command

    I've got a giant computation running on a Scientific Linux cluster. At present I have over 600 jobs parked in the queue, waiting for processor time, while a few are running. I'm trying to use the qalter command on some of the idle but scheduled jobs. I'd like to schedule them for a later time, so that other users can jump part of the queue, sort of as an act of politeness. Is this doable? For example, JOBNAME 292399 is currently idle, scheduled to be run whenever a spot in the queue opens up. But if I run qalter -a 10051000 292398 followed by qrerun 292398 I get qrerun: Request invalid for state of job 292398.euler. From the qalter documentation, I thought 10051000 refers to tomorrow (oct 5th, 10am) but perhaps I'm misunderstanding something? If I'm going about this the wrong way, please let me know. The main thing I'm looking for is a command that's easily scriptable, so that I can modify when my queued tasks get run. qalter seems good for those purposes if I can get it working. I'd rather avoid running qdel and re qsubbing the computations, as there's a bookkeeping issue on which tasks to restart (vs which ones not to). I want to avoid that kind of bookkeeping. From googling around I notice some qalter commands have rather different date formats, but the above appears to be correct, as far as I can tell from the man docs. Any help would be appreciated.

  • how to cause linux system datetime to run faster than real world datetime?

    Background I want to monitor a running linux system over several days. It's a custom gentoo build and with much custom software on board. This software has ongoing maintenance timers and cron scripts and other clock driven events. I need to verify these scheduled events are working. Problem Waiting for the system to step through daily and weekly activity is a long wait time. And modifying all clock-based timers on the system would be time consuming. Yet, I often want to test a system's end-to-end scheduled activities without waiting a week. Potential Solution Have the linux system under test appear to run through it's daily cycle of activity within just a few hours. My Question for Serverfault Is there a way to cause the system's time to run faster than real world time? My first thought is manipulating the ntp daemon to repeatedly and smoothly increment the clock . Any other ideas? And yes, I know this may have strange side affects. However, the system has no important or time critical interactions with systems outside of itself. And this may be a valuable testing technique.

  • Why is Windows Update trying to install an update I don't need?

    I have a Windows 7 system that currently has a single update pending: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems If I try to install the update, Windows Update will: Create a restore point Fail with the error: Code 9C48 Windows Update encountered an error. The event log for the event reads: Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems. If you search the web for that error, there are many other people with the exact same issue. Sadly, I am unable to apply the proposed solutions to my case, because I just installed this system. There is nothing on it, except Windows 7. I installed the system and ran through the updates. I also did the exact same process with this machine several times over the past few days due to a long-term test we just started. I didn't have any problems with any Windows Update on the previous installation runs and I know I didn't do anything different this time because I followed the installation procedures instructions which are to be used during the test. How did this happen and how do I solve it? Further Investigation So, as I always like to do, I ran the update again while running Process Monitor and dug up further details. WindowsUpdate.log First of all, there is a Windows Update log file located at C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log which I didn't know about.   • Sharepoint Workflow "Failed on Start" only when powershell import script is called from task scheduler

    I created a simple PowerShell script that takes an XML file in a local directory on our sharepoint server and imports it into a specific SharePoint form library. (Content management enabled library if that makes any difference) This script works flawlessly if i run it from the PowerShell command line manually. I call it like such: ".\script_name.ps1". It completes without error and the item is imported into the form library successfully. The workflow begins on the item and everything is happy dandy. However, i run into issues when i setup a scheduled task using Windows Server 2008 R2's task manager. The task runs the script without error and it does actually import the XML into the form library. I looks perfectly normal just as if i had run the script manually. However, after about 10 or 20 minutes the workflow status for that item changes from "In progress" to "Failed on Start (Retrying)". The scheduled task in question is a basic task and has only one action. (Start a program) The "program/script" box is set to "C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe" and the "Add arguments" box is set to the path of the actual ps1 script. (C:\scripts\sharepoint_import.ps1) I've tried running the task as various users. I've also tried with and without the "Run with highest privileges" check box. Nothing seems to work. For reference, here is the script i am using to import items into the form library.

  • How to interrupt software raid resync?

    I want to interrupt a running resync operation on a debian squeeze software raid. (This is the regular scheduled compare resync. The raid array is still clean in such a case. Do not confuse this with a rebuild after a disk failed and was replaced.) How to stop this scheduled resync operation while it is running? Another raid array is "resync pending", because they all get checked on the same day (sunday night) one after another. I want a complete stop of this sunday night resyncing. [Edit: sudo kill -9 1010 doesn't stop it, 1010 is the PID of the md2_resync process] I would also like to know how I can control the intervals between resyncs and the remainig time till the next one. [Edit2: What I did now was to make the resync go very slow, so it does not disturb anymore: sudo sysctl -w dev.raid.speed_limit_max=1000 taken from http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linux-raid-increase-resync-rebuild-speed.html During the night I will set it back to a high value, so the resync can terminate. This workaround is fine for most situations, nonetheless it would be interesting to know if what I asked is possible. For example it does not seem to be possible to grow an array, while it is resyncing or resyncing "pending"]

  • Does IIS Sometimes Allocate More Worker Processes Than Configured?

    We have an IIS 7.5 web service on Windows Server 2008 that handles WCF requests from C# clients. This service is configured to have Maximum Worker Processes = 1, so it is not a web garden. IIS is setup to recycle itself at the same time every day (3 AM). I am trying to debug gnarly connection issues, so I wanted to be sure the application pool was not recycling itself. I configured the pool to log an event when it recycles itself. To my surprise, I see the following entries in the System event log: Level: Information Date/Time: 3/23/2012 3:00:00 AM - Source: WAS - Event ID: 5076 A worker process with process id of '6636' serving application pool 'MyAppPool' has requested a recycle because it reached its scheduled recycle time. Level: Information Date/Time: 3/23/2012 2:59:39 AM - Source: WAS - Event ID: 5076 A worker process with process id of '9364' serving application pool 'MyAppPool' has requested a recycle because it reached its scheduled recycle time. IIS is correctly recycling the application pool at 3 AM. However, I do not understand why I would be getting two recycle events in the log within a few seconds of each other. The maximum number of processes is 1. Does IIS sometimes allocate multiple processes for an application pool that is specified as having 1 process? -- edit -- I connected at about 4 PM today and only saw 1 w3wp.exe process. There are no other event log entries that would indicate a crash.

  • Is there a realiable way to troubleshoot wake up from sleep in Windows?

    Is there a reliable way to troubleshoot laptop wakes? I've seen "heuristics" posted here and there but isn't there really a simple and deterministic way to tell what's causing a problem? Specifically, my laptop wakes up about every hour for about 2 minutes. Exported event log entries are here: http://www.mediafire.com/?abcqb00v5wyo6pj. I've tried: powercfg -devicequery wake_armed Empty result set. Scheduled tasks - the main ones are not scheduled to run every hour. When go through a long list of all possible tasks, there are some that are set to be triggered every hour (e.g., MS "RacTask" whatever it is). But when I go to power options, Advanced settings, Sleep, Allow wake timers it is set to "Disable". Also, the specific task is not set to wake the computer if necessary. Power options for my Ethernet card don't enable it to wake the computer - the cable is disconnected anyway. There are no other HW devices attached - no USB disks, no keyboards / mice etc. I am really clueless and quite unhappy that it's so hard to troubleshoot this situation.

    I am looking for an FTP client that will allow me to do the following Include a GUI for setting up a number of FTP connections Support FTPS Run unattended on Windows Server 2008 Retry failed transactions Support email Support custom scripts I need to pull files from a few different servers and there are certain calculations that need to be done depending on which server the files come from. I've looked at SmartFTP and it looks like pretty much what I need except I can't get it to run as a Windows Scheduled Task (I currently have some support threads open in their forum). I've also looked at a few other FTP clients (Filezilla, RoboFTP, and AutoFTP (you can find the Windows 7 BSOD in this one!)) that haven't had the capabilities I'm looking for. Right now, I'm looking at WS_FTP and its scripting capabilities. It appears I can create a script to run as a scheduled task, but I can't add the script to a file transfer task. Does anyone have suggestions on how I can do post-transfer processing on the files or better yet how to integrate scripting into the file transfer task? I'm also open to other suggestions for FTP clients as well if you have them! If I can't find a suitable FTP client, custom scripting will just have to do the trick.
