• Help a CRUD programmer think about an "approval workflow"

  I've been working on a web application that is basically a CRUD application (Create, Read, Update, Delete). Recently, I've started working on what I'm calling an "approval workflow". Basically, a request is generated for a material and then sent for approval to a manager. Depending on what is requested, different people need to approve the request or perhaps send it back to the requester for modification. The approvers need to keep track of what to approve what has been approved and the requesters need to see the status of their requests. As a "CRUD" developer, I'm having a hard-time wrapping my head around how to design this. What database tables should I have? How do I keep track of the state of the request? How should I notify users of actions that have happened to their requests? Is their a design pattern that could help me with this? Should I be drawing state-machines in my code? I think this is a generic programing question, but if it makes any difference I'm using Django with MySQL.

  I'm trying to grade a quiz application I would like to make. I have a questions model with and ask(the actual question), 4 choices(a-d), and a correct answer(string). In the view I have the 4 question being diplayed then the correct answer choice (This is just a test for functionality) and then I created a text_field to accept the users answer choice and a button to refresh the index action which has the scoring logic, for now.. --Do I need to put the text_field within a form_tag? <p>1. <%= h @question.q1 %></p> <p>2. <%= h @question.q2 %></p> <p>3. <%= h @question.q3 %></p> <p>4. <%= h @question.q4 %></p> <p>Answer: <%= h @question.correct %></p> <%= text_field_tag :choice, params[:choice] %> <%= button_to "Grade", {:controller => 'site', :action => "index"} %> <p> <%= @answer %></p> Heres the index controller action def index @question = Question.find(1) if @question.correct == params[:choice] @answer = 'right' else @answer = 'wrong' end end Its not really working. I would love this to work by radiobuttons, but I'm a newbie to rails so I thought I'd take baby steps. So if anyone can help me with how to fix this by string, or preferably by radiobuttons, I'd really appreciate it.

• Euler Project Help (Problem 12) - Prime Factors and the like

  I hate to have to ask, but I'm pretty stuck here. I need to test a sequence of numbers to find the first which has over 500 factors: http://projecteuler.net/index.php?section=problems&id=12 -At first I attempted to brute force the answer (finding a number with 480 after a LONG time) -I am now looking at determining the prime factors of a number and then use them to find all other factors. I am currently at the stage where I can get an array of prime factors for any number I input - i.e 300 has the prime factors 2 2 3 5 5 Using this array of prime factors I need to be able to calculate the remaining factors - This is the part I am stuck on. Basically, as I understand it, I need to calculate ALL possible combinations of the numbers in the array... i.e 2 * 2 2 * 2 * 3 2 * 2 * 3 * 5 2 * 3 2 * 3 * 3 ...and so forth - But where it gets interesting is with things like... 2 * 5 2 * 3 * 5 ...i.e Numbers which are not adjacent to each other in the array I can't think of a way to code this in a generic fashion for any length array... I need help! • Installing django on dreamhost (help a newb out)

  I'm trying to get django running on my dreahost account. I've been trying to sort of use two tutorials at once: the one on the dreamhost wiki and the one in the django book. I installed django using the script on the wiki page, but I ran into trouble immediately while trying to work through the django book. It says: To start the server, change into your project directory (cd mysite), if you haven’t already, and run this command: python manage.py runserver This launches the server locally, on port 8000, accessible only to connections from your own computer. Now that it’s running, visit 127.0.0.1:8000 with your Web browser. You’ll see a “Welcome to Django” page shaded in a pleasant pastel blue. It worked! Those instructions seem to assume that you're developing locally, not on a shared server. Where the heck am I supposed to look for the "Welcome to Django" page after starting the server? In my webroot? No dice. Anyway, I tried to blunder ahead through the django book to its hello world tutorial (chapter 3). But once I've edited the view file and the URLconf, I don't get a nice clean "hello world" text. Instead (as you can see) I get an "import error". Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I have been given a task to: Develop a program where a child will be presented with picture of a fruit (one of five possible fruit) on the screen at the click of a start button. The child will then try to recognise the fruit and write its name in a specified place on the screen. On the click of a check button the name of the fruit written by the child will be checked by your program and if correct will reward the child with a suitable message. If the name presented by the child is not correct, a suitable message should be presented on a red background with the correct name of the fruit included in the message. so far I have managed to create a form with 5 different fruit pictures and a text box below them. a button at the bottom of the form then checks the results and presents a message box to tell them if they have passed or failed.   Hi All, I have an interface and two objects implementing that interface, massively simplied; public interface MyInterface { public int getId(); public int getName(); ... } public class A implements MyInterface { ... } public class B implements MyInterface { ... } We are migrating from using one implementation to the other but I need to check that the objects of type B that are generated are equivalent to those of type A. Specifically I mean that for all of the interface methods an object of Type A and Type B will return the same value (I'm just checking my code for generating this objects is correct). How would you go about this? Map<String, MyInterface> oldGeneratedObjects = getOldGeneratedObjects(); Map<String, MyInterface> newGeneratedObjects = getNewGeneratedObjects(); // TODO: Establish that for each Key the Values in the two maps return equivalent values. I'm looking for good coding practices and style here. I appreciate that I could just iterate through one key set pulling out both objects which should be equivalent and then just call all the methods and compare, I'm just thinking there may be a cleaner, more extensible way and I'm interested to learn what options there might be. • Creating a RESTful API - HELP!

  Hi Chaps Over the last few weeks I've been learning about iOS development, which has naturally led me into the world of APIs. Now, searching around on the Internet, I've come to the conclusion that using the REST architecture is very much recommended - due to it's supposed simplicity and ease of implementation. However, I'm really struggling with the implementation side of REST. I understand the concept; using HTTP methods as verbs to describe the action of a request and responding with suitable response codes, and so on. It's just, I don't understand how to code it. I don't get how I map a URI to an object. I understand that a GET request for domain.com/api/user/address?user_id=999 would return the address of user 999 - but I don't understand where or how that mapping from /user/address to some method that queries a database has taken place. Is this all coded in one php script? Would I just have a method that grabs the URI like so: $array = explode("/", ltrim(rtrim($_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'], "/"), "/")) And then cycle through that array, first I would have a request for a "user", so the PHP script would direct my request to the user object and then invoke the address method. Is that what actually happens? I've probably not explained my thought process very well there. The main thing I'm not getting is how that URI /user/address?id=999 somehow is broken down and executed - does it actually resolve to code? class user(id) { address() { //get user address } } I doubt I'm making sense now, so I'll call it a day trying to explain further. • Will a Ph. D. in Computer Science help?

  I am close to my 30s and still learning about programming and software engineering. Like most people who like their profession I truly believe that I should aim to improve and keep updated. One of the things I do is reading technical papers from professional publications (IEEE and ACM) but I admit there are very good bloggers out there too. Lately I started to think (should I say realize?) that Ph. D people actually are expected to expand constantly their knowledge, but little is expected from lower classes once they know enough This made me think that maybe having a Ph. D will help to have more... respect? but I also believe that I am already getting old for that. Futhermore I see many master and doctor programs that does not seem to add any value over hard experience and self learning. I belive that a degree in computer science, althought not necessary, can lay out a good base for programming work. However: What can a Ph. D. degree give you that you cannot learn on your own? (if you are not into something VERY specific and want to work in a non academic environment)

  I can tell it best by explaining the query I have, and what I need. I need to be able to get a group of items from the database, grouped by category, manufacturer, and year made. The groupings need to be sorted based on total amount of items within the group. This part is done with the query below. Secondly, I need to be able to show an image of the most expensive item out of the group, which is why I use MAX(items.current_price). I thought MAX() gets the ENTIRE row corresponding to the largest column value. I was wrong, as MAX only gets the numeric value of the largest price. So the query doesnt work well for that.   So I think I almost got it. I create my dummy account with one function, and wrote a second function to add it to the Remote Desktop group. Problem is, the Administrator account is the one logged in, so I am not sure how to specify what account to add to the group. Here is my code... • Help with interesting VS2010 and SQL2008 bug

  Hey So im using Visual Studio 2010 to create a webpage. im calling some tabels from sql server 2008 here is where im confused... The code runs fine no errors. The pages works except im missing my rows in my 3rd column from the table. Everything else shows up. Ive checked to make sure the names are matching everywhere and that in sql the joins and such worked.   Hi, I’m going to calculate a ratio between two entities but are having some trouble with the query. The principal is the same to, say a forum, where you say: A user gets points for every new thread. Then, calculate the ratio of points for the number of threads. Example: User A has 300 points. User A has started 6 thread. The point ratio is: 50:6 My schemas look as following: student(studentid, name, class, major) course(courseid, coursename, department) courseoffering(courseid, semester, year, instructor) faculty(name, office, salary) gradereport(studentid, courseid, semester, year, grade) The relations is a following: Faculity(name) = courseoffering(instructor) Student(studentid) = gradereport (studentid) Courseoffering(courseid) = course(courseid) Gradereport(courseid) = courseoffering(courseid) I have this query to select the faculty names there is teaching one or more students: SELECT COUNT(faculty.name) FROM faculty, courseoffering, gradereport, student WHERE faculty.name = courseoffering.instructor AND courseoffering.courseid = gradereport.courseid AND gradereport.studentid = student.studentid My problem is to find the ratio between the faculty members salary in regarding to the number of students they are teaching. Say, a teacher get 10.000 in salary and teaches 5 students, then his ratio should be 1:5. I hope that someone has an answer to my problem and understand what I'm having trouble with. Thanks Mestika

  Hi all, I'm using Wysihat in a rails project and am stumped by it's inability to bind to my textarea named post_description (model name Post field name description). The following in the source of the posts/new HTML: <div id="post_description_editor" class="editor" contenteditable="true"></div> <textarea cols="40" id="post_description" name="post[description]" rows="20" style="display: none; "></textarea> However, when I type something in the description field and click submit the post validation fails saying the description field is empty. Anyone have any clue on how I can get this to work? Thanks in advance!

• CakePHP: Need help using saveField to update a fields in a belongsTo model

  I am trying to update a password into two different models/tables in CakePHP. I can update it fine in the parent model, but not the second model. Models: Users (hasOne GameProfile) PK=id Gameprofiles (belongsTo User) FK=user_id Here is a stripped down version of my function in the Users_controller.php: function updatepass() { if (!empty($this->data)) { $this->User->id = $this->Auth->user('id'); $this->User->saveField('sha1password', $this->Auth->password($this->data['User']['newpass'])); $this->User->Gameprofile->saveField('plainpassword', $this->data['User']['newpass']); } } When I execute the function, the users table is updated fine. But the gameprofile table is not updated, rather Cake does an insert. SQL Query Log: 1195 Query UPDATE `users` SET `sha1password` = 'e9443e9f5e1a07832aad1b2f84de1a666daf89b5' WHERE `users`.`id` = 30 1195 Query INSERT INTO `gameprofiles` (`plainpassword`) VALUES ('abc') Is there a way to get CakePHP to do an update using saveField on a model with a belongsTo attribute? I've tried various ways to refer to user_id before executing the second saveField, but just can't seem to find the winning combination. Any help is greatly appreciated!

• PHP hack files found - help decoding and identifying

  I found a handful of hack files on our web server. Also, if anyone happens to be familiar with this hack, any information on how it works, and where the backdoor and other components of the hack may be hidden would be super helpful and greatly appreciated.   I am using this IP Validation Function that I came across while browsing, it has been working well until today i ran into a problem. For some reason the function won't validate this IP as valid: 203.81.192.26 I'm not too great with regular expressions, so would appreciate any help on what could be wrong. If you have another function, I would appreciate if you could post that for me. • Need help with threads in a client/server

  For college, I am developing a local relay chat. I have to program a chat server and client that will only work on sending messages on different terminal windows on the same computer with threads and fifos. The fifos part I am having no trouble, the threads part is the one that is giving me some headaches. The server has one thread for receiving commands from a fifo (used by all clients) and another thread for each client that is connected. For each client that is connected I need to know a certain information. Firstly, I was using global variables, which worked as longs as there was only one client connected, which is much of a chat, to chat alone. So, ideally I would have some data like: -nickname -name -email -etc... per client that is connected. However, I don't know how to do that. I could create a client_data[MAX_NUMBER_OF_THREADS] where client_data was a struct with everything I needed to have access to, but this would require to, in every communication between server and client to ask for the id of the client in the array client_data and that does not seem very pratical I could also instantiate a client_data immediately after creating the thread but it would only be available in that block, and that is not very pratical either. As you can see I am in need of a little guidance here. Any comment, piece of code or link to any relevant information is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
