  I'm trying to create a page like this via XSLT transformation. Pages page1 page2 Links link1 link2 Here is the xml <siteMenu> <Pages> <title>page1</title> </Pages> <Pages> <title>page2</title> </Pages> <Links> <title>link1</title> </Links> <Links> <title>link2</title> </Links> </siteMenu> I tried using <xsl:for-each select="*"> and <xsl:for-each-group select="*" group-by="@v"> but that gives me every element, but how can i separate them out based on the parent node? I also want to make it dynamic so that if I add another item in siteMenu, it would update the xslt appropriately.

• Listing the content of a tar file or a directory only down to some level

  I wonder how to list the content of a tar file only down to some level? I understand tar tvf mytar.tar will list all files, but sometimes I would like to only see directories down to some level. Similarly, for the command ls, how do I control the level of subdirectories that will be displayed? By default, it will only show the direct subdirectories, but not go further.

• AJAX Autocomplete appears at a random vertical position, not touching the textbox

  Hi, I am using the AJAX Autocomplete extender for ASP.NET 2. Everything works fine...I am calling a webservice which gets me the values to fill the drop down with after 3 letters are typed into certain es. I have set the maxheight attribute and am using a scrollbar in case there are more entries than would fit that height. However, I notice that in some cases, the drop down appears at a random position on the screen, i.e. rather than connected to the relevant textbox, sometimes it appears with its entries above the textbox, not touching it at all. Sometimes it would have just one entry and it would appear in the middle of the screen vertically above the textbox it is associated to. Is there a reason why this is happening?

• Subitems are not all added to a list view in C# using XmlNodeList

  I'm working on extracting data from an RSS feed. In my listview (rowNews), I've got two columns: Title and URL. When the button is clicked, all of the titles of the articles are showing up in the title column, but only one URL is added to the URL column. I switched them around so that the URLs would be added to the first column and all of the correct URLs appeared... leading me to think this is a problem with my listview source (it's my first time working with subitems).   Hi, If I defined a ENUM in a base object with serveral default values. When I inherit from the base object I want to add more options the the ENUM list which are specific to the inheriting object. For example my base could have a ENUM called Direction with values: None ALL Stop Start I create a new class call Compass which inherits the base class and what to add the following to the ENUM Direction. North South East West I create a new class call Navigation which inherits the base class and what to add the following to the ENUM Direction. • How do I arbitrarily reorder lines in a text file using a Unix shell?

  I've got a text file with an arbitrary number of lines, e.g.: one line some other line an additional line one more here I'd like to write a script to reorder those lines based on a given order. e.g. An input of 2 1 3 4 would swap the first and second lines. An input of 3 1 2 4 would put the 3rd line first, the 1st line second, the 2nd line third and keep the 4th line fourth. I could hack something together, but I'm wondering if there's an elegant solution? I can use either bash or ksh.

• How to move a Mercurial repository created on a local PC to a web server?

  I have created and committed to Mercurial repository that was created on my local drive. I now have a remote Windows 2003 web server setup to serve repositories via hgwebdir.cgi. How do I move the locally created repository to the web server? It looks like an ftp of the .hg folder on the local drive to the remote web server does the trick. Am I doing it the right way. Is there a more efficient way?

• IIS7 URL Rewriting: How not to drop HTTPS protocol from rewritten URL?

  I'm working on a website that's using IIS 7's URL rewriting feature to do a permanent redirect from example.com to www.example.com, as well as rewrites from similar domain names to the "main" one, such as from www.examples.com to www.example.com. This rewrite rule - shown below - has worked well for sometime now. However, we recently added HTTPS support and noticed that if users visit one of the URLs to be rewritten to www.example.com then HTTPS is dropped. For instance, if a user visits https://example.com they get redirected to http://www.example.com, whereas we would like them to be sent to https://www.example.com. Here is the rewrite rule of interest (in Web.config): <rule name="Canonical Host Name" stopProcessing="true"> <match url="(.*)" /> <conditions logicalGrouping="MatchAny"> <add input="{HTTP_HOST}" pattern="^example\.com$" /> <add input="{HTTP_HOST}" pattern="^(www\.)?example\.net$" /> <add input="{HTTP_HOST}" pattern="^(www\.)?example\.info$" /> <add input="{HTTP_HOST}" pattern="^(www\.)?examples\.com$" /> </conditions> <action type="Redirect" url="http://www.example.com/{R:1}" redirectType="Permanent" /> </rule> As you can see, the action element's url attribute points directly to http://, so I get why https://example.com is redirected to http://www.example.com. • Should i use TabContainer for multiple pages?

  I'm considering if it is a good idea to use an ASP.Net TabContainer-Control in the way that every TabPanel contains content of a different page. For example: Next i want to implement in my application is the masterdata management. Normally i would create one aspx page for every masterdata-table (f.e. Customer - MD_Customer.aspx). Then i would add a link into my Menu to this page. Now i'm thinking of creating one aspx page for all(Masterdata.aspx) with a Tabcontainer and an UpdatePanel for every type of Masterdata. The link it the menu could have an additional MDType as URL-Parameter. My main concerns are related to performance(one "page" for every TabPanel currently means 7 "pages" in one) and maintainability because of increasing complexity. Is it a good approach or a bad idea? For example, how are these two statements different?   I am having a find a replace in a bunch of RTF documents, The basic pattern I need is \{(?:\\\*)?\\field\\fldlock\{\\\*\\fldinst ?MERGEFIELD ?((?:\\.*?)?[\w\[\]]+?)(?:\\.*?)?\}(?:\{\\fldrslt\})?\} However I then found out there could potentialy be a newline before each slash, so it turned in to this. \{(?:\s*\\\*)?\s*\\field\s*\\fldlock\s*\{\s*\\\*\s*\\fldinst\s*MERGEFIELD\s*((?:\\.*?)?[\w\[\]]+?(?:\s*\\.*?)?)?\s*\}(?:\s*\{\s*\\fldrslt\s*\})?\s*\} But then I hit this it fails fees totaling $\protect {\field\fldlock{\*\fldinst MERGEFIELD ENTEROUTSTANDINGVETERINARYF EES}}\plain\f0\fs24\prot Is there way have to have it match a new line anywhere in the search too without adding (?:\r?\n)? everywhere? EDIT To clear up confusion on the new lines. I need to keep the newlines in the document, I only want to remove the newlines if they are inside my match, so in the final example I posted it should replace fees totaling $\protect {\field\fldlock{\*\fldinst MERGEFIELD ENTEROUTSTANDINGVETERINARYF EES}}\plain\f0\fs24\prot with fees totaling $\protect ENTEROUTSTANDINGVETERINARYFEES\plain\f0\fs24\prot

  I was speaking to an experienced lecturer recently who told me he could usually tell which programming language a student had learnt to program in by looking at their coding style (more specifically, when programming in other languages to the one which they were most comfortable with). He said that there have been multiple times when he's witnessed students attempted to write C# in Prolog. So I began to wonder, what specific traits do people gain from their first (or favourite) language which are carried over into their overall programming style, and more interestingly what good or bad habits do you think people would benefit from or should be wary of when learning specific language?

• Should I still use querystrings for page number, etc, when using ASP.NET 4 URL Routing?

  I am switching from Intelligencia's UrlRewriter to the new web forms routing in ASP.NET 4.0. I have it working great for basic pages, however, in my e-commerce site, when browsing category pages, I previously used querystrings that were built into my pager control to control paging. An old url (with UrlRewriting) would be: http://www.mysite.com/Category/Arts-and-Crafts_17 I now have a MapPageRoute defined in global.asax as: routes.MapPageRoute("category-browse", "Category/{name}_{id}", ~/CategoryPage.aspx"); This works great. Now, somebody clicks to go to page 2. Previously I would have just tacked on ?page=2 as the querystring. Now, How do I handle this using web forms routing? I know I can do something like: http://www.mysite.com/Category/Arts-and-Crafts_17/page/2 But in addition to page, I can have filters, age ranges, gender, etc. Should I just keep defining routes that handle these variables, or should I continue using querystrings and can I define a route that allows me to use my querstrings like before?

• Context.Items.Add on an XML return type?

  So I have the following code contained within an HttpModule in an application I've been asked to support: app.Context.Response.ContentType = "text/xml"; app.Context.Items.Add("IpixRoomId", ipixRoomId); app.Context.Items.Add("IpixId", ipixId); app.Context.Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.NoCache); app.Context.RewritePath(rewriteUrl, true); What's the purpose of adding data to Context.Items when the content type is XML? EDIT: For clarification, I'm calling up this URL: http://website.com/virtualtour/1971/6284/panorama2flash.swf I assume the SWF file (I know very little about Flash) makes another call to http://website.com/virtualtour/config.xml. The code I pasted above only executes on calls to config.xml. So since it's only the SWF file and config.xml being requested from the server, I'm a little confused. Can the .SWF file have access to HttpContext.Current.Items? Other than the HttpModule, there is no .NET involved in the code, it's a straight request to the SWF file which triggers a call to config.xml but it seems that those Context.Items contain the data needed to make the SWF file display the right virtual tour. I'm just missing where that link happens. It can't happen in the XML, so maybe in Flash?

• Why are my bound parameters all identical (using Linq)?

  When I run this snippet of code: string[] words = new string[] { "foo", "bar" }; var results = from row in Assets select row; foreach (string word in words) { results = results.Where(row => row.Name.Contains(word)); } I get this SQL: -- Region Parameters DECLARE @p0 VarChar(5) = '%bar%' DECLARE @p1 VarChar(5) = '%bar%' -- EndRegion SELECT ... FROM [Assets] AS [t0] WHERE ([t0].[Name] LIKE @p0) AND ([t0].[Name] LIKE @p1) Note that @p0 and @p1 are both bar, when I wanted them to be foo and bar. I guess Linq is somehow binding a reference to the variable word rather than a reference to the string currently referenced by word? What is the best way to avoid this problem? (Also, if you have any suggestions for a better title for this question, please put it in the comments.) • Is there a way to customise messages produced by statements in MS SQL Query Analyzer?

  If I run a simple query in SQL Query Analyzer, like: SELECT * FROM TableName the Messages pane always produces a message like: (30 row(s) affected) If I run a stored procedure with many statements, the messages are useless because there's no indication of what each one relates to. So firstly: Is there a way to customise the default messages on a per-query basis? E.g. I'd like a specific query to produce a message like: TableName query produced [numRowsAffected] results. replacing [numRowsAffected] with the number that would have appeared in the default message. Secondly, is there a way to suppress the default messages on a per-query basis? E.g. I have a local variable of type TABLE, used in several statements. I don't want any message to appear for statements where I'm just deleting data from that variable before re-using it. I'm seeking solutions that work in SQL Server 8.0.

• Best practices for "search data class" in ASP.NET MVC

  Hi everybody, I'm hoping this isn't too subjective, but I'm new to ASP.NET MVC and I'm trying to figure out how others may have solved similar problems. Basically, I have two entities, Customers and Orders. A customer has many orders; an order belongs to exactly one customer. I'm making an Order Search feature that should allow a user to search for orders based on order or customer information. Pretty straightforward, I think. I've read in other posts that the search controller should use GET, but I think it makes more sense to use POST because of the large number of search params. I'm using Entity Framework to create my models, and that's in a separate class library project and namespace. This article talks about using binding instead of Request.Form to get at the POST data. Would it make decent sense to make a class to hold all the search data that could be materialized by the magic model binding? Otherwise I'd just be poking through the FormCollection to pull out particular values, which might be fine. Where would you recommend making such a class?

• Is it possible to have a variadic function in C with no non-variadic parameter?

  I have the following function: void doStuff(int unusedParameter, ...) { va_list params; va_start(params, unusedParameter); /* ... */ va_end(params); } As part of a refactor, I'd like to remove the unused parameter without otherwise changing the implementation of the function. As far as I can tell, it's impossible to use va_start when you don't have a last non-variadic parameter to refer to. Is there any way around this? Background: It is in fact a C++ program, so I could use some operator-overloading magic as suggested here, but I was hoping not to have to change the interface at this point. The existing function does its work by requiring that the variable argument list be null-terminated, and scanning for the NULL, therefore it doesn't need a leading argument to tell it how many arguments it has.
