Hi Guys,
Can someone point me to some instructions for configuring multiple monitors in Ubuntu 10.04 using the generic drivers (nv)? I can't seem to find this online.
-M
I've installed Ubuntu Server under Virtualbox just to get a nice little shell. I've also installed the VirtualBox "Guest Additions" and set "Shared Clipboard: Bidirectional".
I still can't seem to get any copy-paste working.
Am I missing something here?
I've installed gpm which gives mouse support in server mode (no X), and allows copy-paste using the mouse, but still the VirtualBox integration doesn't work.
Hello
I am using ubuntu 10.04. Yesterday i shut down my system in a proper working state. And this morning when i started my system i got this problem.
When i minimize any window it doesnt show in the bottom panel. for switching i have to use alt+tab key
On windows I have a few AutoHotkey scripts that let me hit various key combinations to resize windows to particular pre-defined sizes, or move them to certain areas of the screen (or both). I'm wondering how I would accomplish this in Ubuntu (gnome).
Most of the searches I did for a linux version of autohotkey seemed to be centered around just setting up simple keyboard shortcuts (key combo X launches app Y, etc). I didn't see anything about scripting window size and placement beyond maximize/minimize.
I'm using wine in order to install and run yahoo messenger on ubuntu(9.10) But it does not detect the webcam. Not unlike in skype that it can detect(skype not run through wine).
What do I do in order for it to detect the cam?
I would like to enable the "extra" visual effects on Ubuntu. When I choose the option for "extra," it searches for drivers and then says, "Desktop effects could not be enabled." Why doesn't this work on my computer?
I've just made the switch to Ubuntu on my main PC and I've been looking for a media player that can:
Play all the usual video formats
Rate (and ideally, tag) each file
Display thumbnails for each file
Other than that there isn't much I'm after.
Banshee comes close, but doesn't display thumbnails.
I've Google'd lots but I'm running out of search terms to try.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Cheers!
In ubuntu(using version 12.04), when you drag a window to the left or right side of your screen the window gets auto-maximized in height and is half of the screen on the left or right side respectively.
What would be super useful imo is a hotkey that autodetects what side of the screen your window is on the most and then expands it to a state identical to the one described in the above paragraph.
Has anyone programatically done this before? If not, how would you go about achieving this?
In Ubuntu 9.10, how do I change it so as not to show a list of users at the login screen? I would prefer it to be like 9.04 where you typed in the username, then the password.
I can't turn off my ATI adapter. I have applied the fix, but still lspci | grep VGA gives
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M92 LP [Mobility Radeon HD 4300 Series] (rev ff)
and my power consumption is about 15W (Wi-Fi on).
I run ubuntu 9.10, kernel 2.6.31-14-generic. BIOS version 2.30
I have only previously played with ubuntu using virtual machines with VMware Fusion. So everything just sort of worked. I've never had to install any drivers. I'm considering putting it on some real hardware and using it as a media center. What should I be looking for as far as checking hardware compatibility? How does installing drivers work? Any quick and easy recommendations / guides?
Is it possible to do the following in Ubuntu? If so can someone point me in the right direction.
Say you want to set a keyboard shortcut to do the following:
For examples sake, set Alt+F to open Firefox and maximize it, but only if Firefox is not already running. If it is running and not maximized, then maximize the most recently touched Firefox window. If it is maximized, then minimize Firefox.
Thanks, Joe
I'm so sick of this problem. Some time back I changed to windows because of this, and now I'm back in Ubuntu and guess what. This still hasn't been fixed. How is it possible that something so simple yet crippling isn't fixed faster? This is why windows always wins in the end, because of stupid details like this.
Hi,
I wanted to ask if it is possible to create a user account on Ubuntu so that it had all powers and rights of root account except it would be impossible to edit a certain file.
What I intend to do is to edit host file in order to block access of certain websites, and then create a user account which would be the same as root account except it would be not able to edit host file. Maybe there is an easier way to block an access of certain sites forever?
Thanks!
I recently added NFS to my Ubuntu server and edited /etc/fstab to mount the network file system. After a reboot I am not getting the following error several times on the console and it will not boot /etc/init.d/rc: 317: sed: Permission Denied
Any advice? I have commented out the lines that I added to /etc/fstab and the issue still persists.
Thank You,
On Ubuntu it is possible to have multiple JVMs at the same time. The default one is selected with update-alternatives. But this does not set the JAVA_HOME environment variable, due to a debian policy.
I am writing a launcher script (bash), which starts a java application. This java application needs the JAVA_HOME environment variable. So how to get the path of the JVM which is currently selected by update-alternatives?
I used Network Manager in Ubuntu 10.04 to set a static ip address and assigned one that was already in use. Now my computer will not boot (nfs crashes).
I booted from a live cd to change the configuration on the file system in /etc/network/interfaces but the file looks to be the default. Where does the network manager (the gui from system- preferences) store it's configuration so I can overwrite it and enter the correct ip addresss and have a happy working computer again.
thanks!!
hi,
i am very new to ubuntu.... struggling to find the proper command to install Zend Server on my Ubuntu9.10 Server.
After downloading the ZF Server and extracted, i try to run this command

i cant get most of my fn keys to work in this laptop. i especially need fn+f8, which switches between trackpoint & touchpad. what i tried:
sudo nano /etc/modules
(added lenovo-sl-laptop to the file) then:
sudo modprobe lenovo-sl-laptop
this failed: FATAL: Module lenovo_sl_laptop not found.
as for the hdapsd i dont have it installed, since i dont know how to configure it (i guess it helps hdd protection).
I've just installed Ubuntu 9.10 Edition on my VMWare Fusion. host is Mac. I've installed successfully and able to use . Then, I've shut down and reopen again. Then, it's no longer response. like that
I've check Setting. it shows that running. I've waited for long time but no response yet.
Any idea better then reinstalling again ?
I think I tried everything I could but I still can't get my Nvidia GTX 260 to run on the newest ubuntu 9.10 x64.
Update: I was able to stop the gdm with sudo service gdm stop
However, after downloading the latest driver from nvdia - I am told that my video card is not supported.
Hey I have to make a file system with an encrypted partition with on ubuntu server. something like
Unencrypted:
/ - 10 GB
/home - 10GB
/var - 5GB
--------------
Encrypted:
/opt - 50GB
This I can figure out in the setup, just partition as normal, setup /tmp as a encrypted volume with dm-crypt. However im not sure how to mirror this entire drive, so that if either failed i could still boot. and how will that affect the encrypted partition.
Any help would be appreciated.
Is it possible to open inbound connections to a machine connected to a VPN server?
The machine is running ubuntu 9.10 with two network devices(a wireless card and ethernet port), I can connect to my machine locally using a local ip but when I try port forward using my router I can't connect from my external ip.
Is there a way around this? I figure with 2 network devices I can vpn over one and use the other for inbound connections but I can't figure out how to do this.
Thanks
