    I recently encountered an idiom I haven't seen before: string assembly by StringWriter and PrintWriter. I mean, I know how to use them, but I've always used StringBuilder. Is there a concrete reason for preferring one over the other? The StringBuilder method seems much more natural to me, but is it just style? I've looked at several questions here (including this one which comes closest: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/602279/stringwriter-or-stringbuilder ), but none in which the answers actually address the question of whether there's a reason to prefer one over the other for simple string assembly.     I was trying to follow this tutorial in order to create my own restful web-service using Spring framework. In the returned xml non-string objects are ignored!

    The Scenario I have written a Silverlight 3 Application that uses an SQL Server database. I'm moving the application onto the Cloud (Azure Platform). In order to do this I have had to setup my database on SQL Azure. I am using the ADO.Net Entity Framework to model my database. I have got the application running on the cloud, but I cannot get it to connect to the database. Below is the original localhost connection string, followed by the SQL Azure connection string that isn't working. The application itself runs fine, but fails when trying to retrieve data.   • DataGrid calculate difference between values in two databound cells

    Hello! In my small application I have a DataGrid (see screenshot) that's bound to a list of Measurement objects. A Measurement is just a data container with two properties: Date and CounterGas (float). Each Measurement object represents my gas consumption at a specific date. The list of measurements is bound to the DataGrid as follows: <DataGrid ItemsSource="{Binding Path=Measurements}" AutoGenerateColumns="False"> <DataGrid.Columns> <DataGridTextColumn Header="Date" Binding="{Binding Path=Date, StringFormat={}{0:dd.MM.yyyy}}" /> <DataGridTextColumn Header="Counter Gas" Binding="{Binding Path=ValueGas, StringFormat={}{0:F3}}" /> </DataGrid.Columns> </DataGrid> Well, and now my question :) I'd like to have another column right next to the column "Counter Gas" which shows the difference between the actual counter value and the last counter value. E.g. this additional column should calculate the difference between the value of of Feb. 13th and Feb. 6th = 199.789 - 187.115 = 15.674 What is the best way to achieve this? I'd like to avoid any calculation in the Measurement class which should just hold the data. I'd rather more like the DataGrid to handle the calculation. So is there a way to add another column that just calculates the difference between to values? Maybe using some kind of converter and extreme binding? ;D P.S.: Maybe someone with a better reputation could embed the screenshot. Thanks :)

    Hi, My input is a InputStream which contains an XML document. Encoding used in XML is unknown and it is defined in the first line of XML document. From this InputStream, I want to have all document in a String. To do this, I use a BufferedInputStream to mark the beginning of the file and start reading first line. I read this first line to get encoding and then I use an InputStreamReader to generate a String with the correct encoding. It seems that it is not the best way to achieve this goal because it produces an OutOfMemory error. (2) - 3525.01," } [1]=> array(1) { [0]=> string(39) "E-Book What I Didn't Learn At School..." } [2]=> array(1) { [0]=> string(1) "2" } [3]=> array(1) { [0]=> string(7) "3525.01" } } which matches only one items... what i need is to get all items from such strings. when i've added "," sign to the end of the string - it worked fine. but that is non-sense in adding comma to each string. Any advice?

  • Group vs role (Any real difference?)

    Can anyone tell me, what's the real difference between group and role? Ive been trying to figure this out for some time now and the more information I read, the more I get the sence, that this is brought up just to confuse people and there is no proper difference in this. Both can do the other one's job. Ive always used a group to manage users and their access rights. Recently, I've come accross an administration software, where is a bunch of users. Each user can have assigned a module (whole system is split into a few parts called modules ie. Administration module, Survey module, Orders module, Customer module). On top of it, each module have a list of functionalities, that can be allowed or denied for each user. So let's say, a user John Smith can access module Orders and can edit any order, but havent given a right to delete any of them. If there was more users with the same competency, I would use a group to manage that. I would aggregate such users into the same group and assign access rights to modules and their functions to the group. All users in the same group would have the same access rights. Why call it a group and not role? I don't know, I just feel it that way. It seems to me, that simply it just doesnt really matter :] But I still would like to know the real difference. What about you guys? Any suggestions why this should be rather called role than group or the other way round? Thanks to everyone.

    I have built a parser in Sprache and C# for files using a format I don't control. Using it I can correctly convert: a = "my string"; into my string The parser (for the quoted text only) currently looks like this: public static readonly Parser<string> QuotedText = from open in Parse.Char('"').Token() from content in Parse.CharExcept('"').Many().Text().Token() from close in Parse.Char('"').Token() select content; However the format I'm working with escapes quotation marks using "double doubles" quotes, e.g.: a = "a ""string""."; When attempting to parse this nothing is returned. It should return: a ""string"". Additionally a = ""; should be parsed into a string.Empty or similar. I've tried regexes unsuccessfully based on answers like this doing things like "(?:[^;])*", or: public static readonly Parser<string> QuotedText = from content in Parse.Regex("""(?:[^;])*""").Token() This doesn't work (i.e. no matches are returned in the above cases).     I am relatively new to programming in PHP, so I apologize if this is a rather simple question. I have a MySQL database table called MachineReports that contains the following values: ReportNum(primary key, auto increment), MachineID and Timestamp Here is some example data: |ReportNum | MachineID | Timestamp | |1 | AD3203 | 2012-11-18 06:32:28| |2 | AD3203 | 2012-11-19 04:00:15| |3 | BC4300 | 2012-11-19 04:00:15| What I am attempting to do is find the difference in timestamps in seconds for each machine ID by iterating over each row set. I am getting stuck on the best way to do this, however. One of the things I've considered is using a multidimensional array in php - using the $machineID as the key and then storing the timestamp inside the array the key points to. However, I'm uncertain how to do that since my query parses row by row. I have quite a few questions. 1) Is this the most efficient way to be doing this? I suspect my database table design may not be the best. 2)What would be the best way to determine the difference in timestamps for a certain machineID? Even just a pointer to a topic that would prompt me to think about this in a different way would be helpful - I'm not afraid to do research. Thanks!

  • Differences between iPhone/iPod Simulator and Devices

    Hi, since I started iPhone/iPod Development I have come across some differences between how the simulator and how real device react. Maybe I will come across some other differences I will have to figure out as well, maybe other people haven't met these problems here (YET) and can profit from the knowledge, and maybe you know some problems/differences that you would have been happy to know about earlier before you spent several hours or days figuring out what the heck is going on. So here is what I came across. Simulator is not case sensitive, Devices are case sensitive. This means a default.png or Icon.png will work in simulator, but not on a device where they must be named Default.png and icon.png (if it's still not working read this answer) Simulator has different codecs to play audio and video If you use f.e. MPMoviePlayerController you might play certain video on the simulator while on the device it won't work (use Handbrake-presets-iPhone & iPod Touch to create playable videos for Simulator and Device). If you play audio with AudioServicesPlaySystemSound(&soundID) you might here the sound on simulator but not an a device. (use Audacity to open your soundfile, export as wav and run afconvert -f caff -d LEI16@44100 -c 1 audacity.wav output.caf in terminal) Also there is this flickering on second run problem which can be resolved with an playerViewCtrl.initialPlaybackTime = -1.0; either on the end of playing or before each beginning. Simulator is mostly much faster cause it doesn't simulate the hardware but uses Mac resources, therefore f.e. sio2 Apps (OpenGL,OpenAL,etc. framework) run much better on simulator, well everything that uses more resources will run visibly better in simulator than on device. I hope we can add some more to this.

  • git difftool, open all diff files immediately, not in serial

    The default git diff behavior is to open each diff file in serial (wait for previous file to be closed before opening next file). I'm looking for a way to open all the files at once - in BeyondCompare for example this would open all the files in tabs within the same BC window. This would make it easier to review a complex set of changes; flick back and forwards between the diff files and ignore unimportant files.

  • Array Problem, need to sort via Keys

I have values that are being outputted from a SQL query like so: $row[0] = array('lid' => 1, 'llayout' => 1, 'lposition' => 1, 'mid' => 1, 'mlayout' => 1, 'mposition' => 0); $row[1] = array('lid' => 2, 'llayout' => 1, 'lposition' => 0, 'mid' => 2, 'mlayout' => 1, 'mposition' => 0); $row[2] = array('lid' => 2, 'llayout' => 1, 'lposition' => 0, 'mid' => 3, 'mlayout' => 1, 'mposition' => 1); $row[3] = array('lid' => 3, 'llayout' => 1, 'lposition' => 1, 'mid' => 4, 'mlayout' => 1, 'mposition' => 1); $row[4] = array('lid' => 4, 'llayout' => 1, 'lposition' => 2, 'mid' => 5, 'mlayout' => 1, 'mposition' => 0); etc. etc. Ok, so the best thing I can think of for this is to give lid and mid array keys and have it equal the mposition into an array within the while loop of query like so... $old[$row['lid']][$row['mid']] = $mposition; Now if I do this, I need to compare this array's keys with another array that I'll need to build based on a $_POST array[]. $new = array(); foreach($_POST as $id => $data) { // $id = column, but we still need to get each rows position... $id = str_replace('col_', '', $id); // now get the inner array... foreach($data as $pos => $idpos) $new[$id][$idpos] = $pos; } Ok, so now I have 2 arrays of info, 1 from the database, and another from the $_POST positions, I hope I got the array keys correct. Now I need to figure out which one's changed, comparing from the old to the new. And also, need to update the database with all of the new positions where new lid = the old lid, and the new mid = the old mid from each array. I'm sure I'll have to use array_key or array_key_intersect somehow, but not sure exactly how...??? Also, I don't think an UPDATE would be useful in a foreach loop, perhaps there's a way to do a CASE statement in the UPDATE query? Also, Am I going about this the right way? OR should I do it another way instead of using a muli-dimensional array for this.

I'd like to be able to check that the two tables have matching columns: the source table has exactly the same columns as the base table and the datatypes match make a diff from the base table to the source table do the necessary updates, deletes and inserts to change the data in the base table to correspond the source table optionally limit the diff to a subset of the base table, preferrably with a stored procedure. Has anyone written a stored proc for this or could you point to a source?

    Whenever I tried to search about differences between classes and structs in C# or .net, I ended up with the conceptual overview of the two things like value type or the reference type, where the variables are allocated etc. But I need some practical differences. I have found some like different behavior of assignment operator, having constructors etc. Can anybody provide some more practical differences which will be directly useful while coding? Like the things works with one but not with other or same operation showing different behavior. And some common mistakes regarding these two. Also please suggest where to consider using a struct instead of a class. And where the structs should not be used.
