Specifically I wish to identify certain regions of interest, and peek at them at regular intervals, possibly occasionally poking new values. I suspect an answer may involve calls to ptrace(), and reading /proc/[pid]/mem, but need more to go on.

    I'm using Python, for what it's worth, but will accept answers in any applicable language. I've tried writing to /proc/$pid/cmdline, but that's a readonly file. I've tried assigning a new string to sys.argv[0], but that has no perceptible impact. Are there any other possibilities? My program is executing processes via os.system (equivalent to system(3)) so a general, *NIX-based solution using an additional spawning process would be fine.

    How do I kill a process which is running in bash - for example, suppose I open a file: $ gedit file.txt is there any way within the command prompt to close it? This example is fairly trivial, since I could just close the window, but it seems to come up a bit, particularly when I mistype commands. I want to match a keys values together, so the result on the above string would be VALUE VALUE VALUE VALUE I currently have the following as my regex [A-Z0-9]+/([A-Z0-9 ]+)(?:(?!^[A-Z0-9]+/)) but this returns VALUE KEY as the first result.
