  • Processing large recordsets in Rails

    Hello, I'm trying to perform a daily operation on a larger than normal dataset (2m+ records). However, Rails seems to take a very long time performing operations on such a dataset. Operations like Dataset.all.each do |data| ... end take a very long time to complete (I assume this is because it can't fit all the items into memory at once, right?). Does anyone have any strategies on how I could handle this situation? I know SQL would probably speed up the process, but I'm looking to use the Rails environment as I can do many more complicated things to the data than I can with just SQL statements.

    hi guys. so i have this form and on it is a combo box populated from a database via a SQL method. and i have another form which allows us to maintain the database table etc. so i make a new instance of the second form doing: Form1 frm = new Form2; frm.show(); once i have done what ever i wanted to do on the second form and i close it, i need to somehow trigger an event or something which will refresh the combo box and the code behind it. i was thinking of some onchange or focus event for the whole form, the problem is i have 5 of these combo boxes and running all the SQL again. i also thought of passing somesort of variable thro but then i would still need an event for that. any ideals would be awesome

  • Reordering Lists like playlists in the media player

    Hi, I have a list of items that are displayed using a ListView from a SQLCursor. The SQL table includes(as well as other things) a _id field and an order field. I use the order field to sort the list before it gets to the ListView. What I need is a widget like the MediaPlayer has in its playlist view. It allows you to click the icon and drag the item in the playlist around and put it into a new order. With that ability I can then retrieve the new order and update the SQL table with the new order. However, I am not having any luck finding any clues to help me add that functionality into my program. The question is whether I can use existing functions to help me, or do I need to manually program motion events and such until I get nearly the same functionality.

    I am using clojure.contrib.sql to fetch some records from an SQLite database. (defn read-all-foo [] (with-connection *db* (with-query-results res ["select * from foo"] (into [] res)))) Now, I don't really want to realize the whole sequence before returning from the function (i.e. I want to keep it lazy), but if I return res directly or wrap it some kind of lazy wrapper (for example I want to make a certain map transformation on result sequence), SQL-related bindings will be reset and connection will be closed after I return, so realizing the sequence will throw an exception. How can I enclose the whole function in a closure and return a kind of anonymous iterator block (like yield in C# or Python)? Or is there another way to return a lazy sequence from this function?

    I'm in this project: A web page that's gonna be used by the front-end company people to query and update data from a SQL DB. I'm working with visual studio and the code behind (C#) is almost done, so the interactions between SQL and C# and ok. My original idea was to work with ASP.NET which is familiar to me, but that's not gonna be possible. I have to switch to PHP. So, today is my first day learning PHP, checking http://php.net/manual/en/index.php and a lot of things seem quite similar to ASP.NET so I guess it won't be that hard. Anyways, some questions popped up quite fast as I wanted to script something else than a "hello world" . Is there an easy way to get/send C# variables from my class using a php page? I've read soemthing about using XML in order to do so, but still I'm scratching my head, is there another, easier, way to do this?

The intent is for the class to maintain one private recordset an other methods move forward, retrieve fields, etc. This is a basic example of my class: class SqlADO { private: ADODB::_RecordsetPtr m_recordset; public: void Open(); //open the connection void Execute(const char* sql); // creates or replaces current recordset void Next(); //moves recordset cursor forward void Field(const char* fieldName); //retrieves field name from current record of the recordset }; My Questions: In the Execute method, how can I check to see that the recordset instance has been created (or do I need to) so that I can close it first? I know my SQL works with a null parameter, but the ranks dropdown is not data binding when I select [All Regions] on the region list. It binds when I select a region from the DB, but keeps that binding when I select [All Regions] again. What am I doing wrong?

  • How do I set ORDER BY params using prepared PDO statement?

    I'm having problems using params in the ORDER BY section of my SQL. It doesn't issue any warnings, but prints out nothing. $order = 'columnName'; $direction = 'ASC'; $stmt = $db->prepare("SELECT field from table WHERE column = :my_param ORDER BY :order :direction"); $stmt->bindParam(':my_param', $is_live, PDO::PARAM_STR); $stmt->bindParam(':order', $order, PDO::PARAM_STR); $stmt->bindParam(':direction', $direction, PDO::PARAM_STR); $stmt->execute(); The :my_param works, but not :order or :direction. Is it not being internally escaped correctly? Am I stuck inserting it directly in the SQL? Back end for all these applications is SQL Server. We would like to automate testing of any bug fixes, any where from web UI change to, middle tier .net code change to sql code change. This tool would be used by programmers to do unit test and played back in different test environments to ensure that bug fix is test correctly in all the environments including the produciton environment. This test would be executed by different teams such as QA, Build, and production site testers. What tool or approach do you recommend?

    I'm trying to put an mysql query result into an string I tried to find an answer but all the similar posts were getting subquery answers which is not what I'm trying to do. for example Fruits_tbl ID Fruit Color Number __________________________________ 2 Apple Red 5 $sql = "select Fruits,Color,Number from Fruits_tbl where ID = 2"; $result = $pdo->query($sql); $row = $result->fetch(); print_r($row); This will give me something like Array([0]="Apple", [1]="Red", [2]="5", [Fruit]="Apple", [Color]="Red", [Number]="5") implode will give me 2 of each I want just need a string = "Apple, Red, 5" what I currently have is $string = $row[Fruit].", ".$row[Color].", ".$row['Number'] As you can see that's rather tedious. Is there something like implode but only return the index array or something?

    I am customizing the insert SQL generated by hibernate and have hit an issue. When Hibernate generates the query by itself, it inserts data into the first two columns of the table, but this causes a database error since all four columns of the table are non-nullable. For the insert to be performed properly, it must insert the same data into two columns of the new record. This means that I need Hibernate to bind the same data to two different parameters in the query (prepared statement) that I am writing. Is there some SQL syntax that allows me to refer to anonymous parameters bound to a prepared statement in an order different from which they are bound?     I'm trying to generate rating place table using following receipt http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1776821/assign-places-in-the-rating-mysql-php but my database is high loaded. I tried not to create table, but use MEMORY TABLE and update it using following SQL query insert into tops (uid) select uid from users order by exp desc; but got the following MySQL error Deadlock found when trying to get lock; try restarting transaction because there are too many queries until SQL select is being executed. How to solve this problem? P.S. CREATE TABLE tops as SELECT work almost fine except high server load... up to load average: 50 if tops are non-memory table. My table users has near 4.5 millions of rows. Thanks for any advices.

  • How to find foreign-key dependencies pointing to one record in Oracle?

    Hi folks, I have a very large Oracle database, with many many tables and millions of rows. I need to delete one of them, but want to make sure that dropping it will not break any other dependent rows that point to it as a foreign key record. Is there a way to get a list of all the other records, or at least table schemas, that point to this row? I know that I could just try to delete it myself, and catch the exception, but I won't be running the script myself and need it to run clean the first time through. I have the tools SQL Developer from Oracle, and PL/SQL Developer from AllRoundAutomations at my disposal. Thanks in advance!

    We typically interface with a RDBMS through SQL. I.e. we create a sql string and send it to the server through JDBC or ODBC or something similar. Are there any RDBMS that allow direct interfacing with the database engine through some API in Java, C#, C or similar? I would expect an API that allows constructs like this (in some arbitrary pseudo code): Iterator iter = engine.getIndex("myIndex").getReferencesForValue("23"); for (Reference ref: iter){ Row row = engine.getTable("mytable").getRow(ref); } I guess something like this is hidden somewhere in (and available from) open source databases, but I am looking for something that is officially supported as a public API, so one finds at least a note in the release notes, when it changes. In order to make this a question that actually has a 'best' answer: I prefer languages in the order given above and I will prefer mature APIs over prototypes and research work, although these are welcome as well.

Currently it loads one for two seconds, then loads the next one for 2 seconds, then the next. however, I want to make it load ALL of them at the same time. I'm sure its possible, I'm just unsure as to how. If someone could point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.
