• No video signal at boot with custom built computer

  After booting my custom built computer, neither the VGA nor the HDMI methods from the video card seem to emit any signal to the display. I have tested both a regular VGA screen and a modern HDMI screen. Both did not receive signal. Below are the specifications from my computer build: Intel Core i5 3350P ASRock B75 Pro 3-M Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST1000 DM003 1000GB Corsair Vengeance LP CML 8GX 3M2 A1600 CGB Blue (2 cards) Cooler Master B Series B600 Club 3D Radeon HD7870 XT Jokercard Samsung SH-224 BB Black Sharkoon T28 Case The motherboard does not emit any beeps on startup. The CD tray opens properly and all fans spin. All cables are properly connected. All components are new and no damage was found on any of the components. The fans on the GPU spin aswell. The VGA test we did was by using the onboard graphics from the Intel i5, but this gave no result. The HDMI test was from the GPU which did not emit any signal either. We have not been able to test out the DVI, could this be important to test, even though all the other methods did not work? Thank you for your time and hopefully reply.

• vim coloring for git

• grep --color=auto with -i option disables the matching text color, why?

  I was messing around with grep and put this in my .zshenv: export GREP_OPTIONS="--color=auto" export GREP_COLORS='mt=1;34' I was bonking my head on the keyboard and changing GREP_COLORS around for a minute trying to figure out why the folder colors were working, but the matching text wasn't. I was doing this: $ grep -R -n -i -e "functionFoo\(" --include=*.cs --exclude-dir=Logs * The line number and file names were set with the default colors, but the matching text wasn't. After spending way too much time, I thought to do this: $ grep -R -n -e "functionFoo\(" --include=*.cs --exclude-dir=Logs * (I removed the -i option.) That's all it took to get the matching text to correctly show up in bold blue. This is a Cygwin on Vista setup, with rxvt running zsh. Any idea why grep colors would break on specifying a case-insensitive match? Update: Under cygwin 1.7, it's a little bit better - case insensitive search works correctly, but it only highlights the word that matches the expression exactly. In other words, "FunctionFoo" highlights "FunctionFoo" but not "functionFoo" and vice versa. Probably a grep issue so I'll be submitting it to that list.

• How do I push my initial snapshot to a subscriber server in SQL Server 2000?

  I'm configuring Transactional Replication using the Push model. The scenario is: The SQL Servers: SQL01 (publisher) and SQL02 (subscriber) - both running SQL 2000 SP4. Both servers are standalone (i.e. not domain members) Both servers have their FQDN and NETBIOS names in their HOSTS files I've managed to configure SQL01 to publish my database and configured a Push subscription for SQL02 using the Push New Subscription wizard and set the Distribution Agent to update the subscription continuously. On the Push Subscription wizard "Initialise Subscription" page I've selected "Yes, initialise the schema and data" and ticked the "Start the Snapshot Agent to begin the initialisation process immediately" option. All the required services are running (SQL Agent). When I complete the wizard and browse the Replication - Publications folder I can see my publication (blue book with arrow). The publication shows the Push subscription and its status is Pending. If I look in the c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\Mssql\Repldata folder I see a number of T-SQL scripts for each table e.g. Products.bcp, Products.sch, Products.idx. What should happen now? Should my replicated database now (magically) appear on the subscription server?

• Important hardware components to avoid bottlenecks/improve speed on a laptop?

  Looking for a powerful general use (including web development) laptop running Windows. Price points seem to be all over the place. Many less powerful machines are priced much higher than machines with better specs. How does one navigate this market? Are there any unpublished/under-publicized specs/bottlenecks you look for? Understanding that hardware improves over time, is there an efficient ratio that can be used (or something similar, like Windows Experience Index?) which will indicate how powerful a system is? Thanks in advance! P.S. Here is an example from a laptop released on September 17, 2010. Can anyone pick apart these specs? Is there missing information you would be looking for? • How to clone a HDD and then use the clone with VMware (so that Windows works!)?

  I have a system on which Windows 7 is installed, and I am trying to make a clone of its HDD image, which I then want to use in my main PC with VMware, so that I can boot Windows 7 off the cloned HDD. I used Ultimate Boot CD v5.1.1 with the system whose HDD I wanted to clone, and I cloned it using EaseUs Disk Copy, which comes with Ultimate Boot CD. The source HDD was 250 GB in size which had 3 partitions, while the USB HDD I attached to the system, which was supposed to be the destination/clone HDD, was 320 GB in size. I chose to create an exact replica, and so 250 GB worth of data (partitions, etc.) was copied exactly, and the rest of the space was un-allocated. I now connected this USB HDD to my main PC, fired up VMware Workstation 8 and defined a new Virtual Machine, and chose to boot off the USB HDD. Result is that when Windows is booting (from the cloned HDD inside VMware), I get the blue screen error before I reach the login screen. How can I change my methodology so that Windows even boots from the clone? I can change any tools I use, etc.

• How to get data from a borked Windows Home Server

  Yesterday we had a power surge, followed by a power outage. This left my WHS borked: powering on just gives to a flashing blue light (the led on the power supply also flashes green) - no fan or boot activity, nothing. I urgently needed some files off there in the short term (and the 500GB of photos, music, personal video etc in the long term) so I took the hard drive out and put it in my computer. The files and folders showed up, but I couldn't access them - clicking on an image gave an invalid image error in Picasa, I couldn't play MP3s etc. I changed the ownership and permissions of the files, still nothing. I booted in with a LiveCD, the same: files appear, but won't open. Is there anything else I can do? I'm now wondering if it was just the power cable that's broken, but if so, why can;t I access my files from the hard drive? If it is the power cable, and I replace that and the hard drive, will I have done any harm messing around with ownership and file permissions?

• Find whether TV supports S Video

  Hello Freinds I have a TV (some unknown model) which has 3 sockets to insert 3 wires red, yellow and white. A DVD Player can be connected to the TV using sockets and the TV displays that the TV is in AV mode when DVD is running. Now i have a Desktop which has a S Video Port and i have a wire to connect the S Video port from my computer to those red, yellow and white sockets using appropriate pins. Now i have searched all over the remote and it does not switches to S Video Mode, it has only 2 modes of operation i.e. 1 Cable Connection (Third Party DTH Receiver receives channels and i pay subscription) and 2 AV Mode. It does not have S Video Mode or any other mode. Now my question is whether i can connect the S Video cable from my desktop to the above described TV or i should look for a new TV if i wish to connect the S Video from Computer to TV or there is any sort of converter that can help? I did tried connecting the S Video cable from Desktop to TV, but it did'nt worked. TV kept on displaying Blue Screen of AV Mode. Regards

• i7 Windows 7 laptop or Macbook Pro 15" (For making 3D model and Animation)

  Hi everyone, I'm thinking of buying a new laptop as my current one will be 5 years old next year and it currently gives me a blue screen everytime I run a heavy software to make 3D models and animation. Question is: Should I buy Macbook Pro or a Windows 7 laptop? I tried to research and some say that Windows would be better, especially because you can buy a very high spec laptop with cheaper price. While some other say Macbook Pro is the better choice as it can run bootcamp with windows 7 100% performance on every software even though it's a mac. Is this true? Which one is actually better? Btw, the software that I usually use is 3Ds Max, Maya, and ZBrush. To note as well, I have never used a Mac before. I've checked around some stores and budget wise, I'll need around AU$3000+ to buy a Macbook pro, and AU$2000+ to buy a windows laptop. Quite a big difference in price range. • How to repair damaged repository (which has a centralized .svn directory)?

  I recently upgraded my TortoiseSVN installation to version 1.7.1. This forced me to upgrade my working copy as well. The upgrade removed all (but one) of the .svn directories from all subdirectories leaving only one in the root. Now out of the blue (of course; I suspect my antivirus software) there is an error when I for example try to clean up the working copy. I am also not able to commit anything. The error message when cleaning up is: Cleanup failed to process the following paths: C:\svn Can't open file 'C:\svn.svn\pristine\73\73bcc5fa7819f84f56b81dfa0236f0aac7b7d404.svn-base': The system cannot find the file specified. I traced the error to be related to the presence of one directory within the working copy. If I rename it then everything works. When it is present I get the error. I also deleted it and checked it out again. No change, the error persists. With previous versions I could repair damages in the .svn easily: just delete the offending folder and check out again. I cannot do this anymore because now the .svn dir is centralized. What could I do to repair my working copy?

• Installing Ubuntu guest crashes Hyper-V host

  I have a weird problem that I don't even know where to begin diagnosing. Trying to install Ubuntu to a VM locks up the host system! My setup is: Dell R715 server, dual 16 core AMD opteron processors, 96GB RAM Dell MD3600f SAN Server 2008 R2 Datacenter System Center VMM 2012 There are 5 windows virtual machines running that have had no problems. This is the first linux VM I've tried to create. I setup a VM through virtual machine manager, set the CD drive to a Ubuntu 12.04 server x64 iso, and started it up. It boots up the normal ubuntu install menu, but the second I hit enter on "Install Ubuntu Server", I get disconnected. The HOST machine stops responding to pings. So do all virtual machines on it. It locks up entirely - keyboard on the host won't work, mouse won't move, numlock light won't change. There's no blue screen - the host is sitting at the login screen completely unresponsive. I can't find any relevant logs in event viewer after rebooting. What could cause the host machine to freeze like that? It's not a one time occurrence - it happens every time at the exact same point. Thank god this server isn't in production yet!

• Windows 7 Busy Icon won't stop spinning

  In windows 7 you have the busy icon that is a little blue wheel spinning beside the cursor when it is doing something. It has started to spin for about a second every 3-5 seconds. There is noting running that I can tell on the computer to cause the busy icon. It gets very annoying and I am not sure what to do to get it to stop. Ideas? Running a CPU Usage Gadget says I have less than 5% of the CPU being use and I have over 6GB of RAM free. (I have 8GB total) I am running a 3.6 GHZ AMD FX 4100 processor. EDIT- What I am actually seeing is the working in background pointer (the pointer is still visible beside the busy icon). EDIT 2 - After realizing this happened with the printer installation I turned on the the printer and the busy icon stopped. The printer is setup wirelessly. How do I stop Windows from (I guess) checking for the printer? That is what I assume it is doing. I am using a HP Officejet 8600

• Win 7 crashes, PC reboots and says "Hard drive 0 not found" until I turn if off and on again

  I recently made the move from Windows XP to Windows 7. Since then, when my computer is on for a few hours it always ends up rebooting without warning. Then the BIOS won't recognize my hard drive (hard drive 0 not found). If I turn off my computer and then on again, it boots normally. Some details: Dell Dimension 9150 Windows 7 I updated the BIOS I updated all system drivers with the latest version from Dell (SATA, Chipset, etc.) Other drivers updated too (Graphic card, sound, etc.) There is one thing that I tried after some Googling: I turned off the DMA access to the drives, but it's still rebooting after a few hours. Any clue? • Windows XP hanging on login screen

  I have been given two Eee PC 100HA to manage for some people, they are both running the same hardware and XP home but one is having some strange problems with logging on. The main problem is that it hangs at the login screen for ages and sometimes never gets to the desktop. The strange thing is it only seems to do it after the computer has been cold started, but it won't do it if the computer has been restarted. I have made two logs of the start up with process monitor but every time the logger is attached the computer will log in fine. I have also set the computer to blue screen and create a crash dump when you press ctrl scroll twice but when I do it at the hung login it just sits at a black screen and I don't get a crash dump, I have turned off the auto system restart on failure option also. I can usually fix most computer start up and shutdown problems but this one has got me stuffed. Has anyone had the same problems before, or can recommend something that I can try? Cheers.

• Super slow opening my downloads folder

  I have an exe file in my download folder that I half downloaded through utorrent (it's not piracy, a legit file from people who use bittorrent to distribute large files). I think I tried to open it while it was still sharing, that is, did not stop the upload. That actually froze my computer. When I restart in utorrent I set the file to be deleted. Unfortunately even though utorrent doesn't see that file anymore, it's still visible in my download folder. Whenever I try to open my download folder it literally takes 10 minutes or more. It opens, but is empty and the blue progress bar needs a long time to complete. After completion I can use the download folder normally, but opening and closing things in that folder takes a long time. I see the exe that I tried to download. I tried to delete it. But it was taking so long 30+ minutes that I eventually just hit cancel. That doesn't even work, and it was slowing down the computer. Couldn't figure out how to stop the delete so I just pulled the plug. Should I just forget about that dl folder and set a new one? Is there something I can do? Thanks.

• Troubleshooting an overheating CPU

  I & my father just recently put together a new PC. Specs below. From the very beginning, on boot it will often complain that the CPU is too hot. If I sit in BIOS and watch the CPU, it'll drop back down from red to blue (<72C), at which point I've tended to just boot into Windows...and haven't had any problems. In fact, I've played a couple hours straight of Skyrim at max settings, and not had any visible issues. That said, I've occasionally walked away & come back to find that it's crashed. Yesterday, it crashed (while idle) twice in 12 hours, which shifted the balance from busy-with-life to nervous-I'm-about-to-melt-something. I just installed Core Temp which is showing my 4 cores fluxuating between 70-98C. I'm guessing at this point that the CPU fan may be incorrectly installed or defective. My first thought is to either (a) add water cooling (which the case supports) and / or (b) replace the CPU fan with an after-market one. That said, I'm very open to suggestions. A note, while I certainly don't want to burn money here, I have a baby coming any day now and am still unpacking from a recent move so if I have a choice between an option that costs money and another that takes a while...I'll happily spend a bit extra. Side question: Should I be nervous to even have this on at this point? Let me know if there's something useful I could add to my report. Otherwise, I'm looking forward to your suggestions! Thanks.   recently my company migrated from an in-house Exchange server to the Microsoft hosted exchange online solution. My client is Outlook 2007. Before the migration, I could see the details of the meetings when I hovered on the busy blue bar for a resource such as a conference room. I could click on the meetings and see the invite list and the contents of the meeting. Ofcourse if the meeting was marked as private I could not. however after the migration to the online solution, I cannot see the detailed information. I can still see if the room is busy or not but I can no longer see the details of that meeting. The IT folks can see the information and they claim that they can see it because they have full admin rights. It is their claim that in the hosted Exchange solution you can either have full access (admin access) and see the details or not see anything but just that the room is busy. there is no middle ground such as being able to see the details of the meeting but not having any admin rights. For some reason I believe this to be not true. Can someone please verify my doubts and inform me of what needs to be done to see that information if my IT folks are wrong? thanks

• Short, intermittent USB port timeouts

  I have a data acquisition application controlled by a Windows PC. I am using an Intel Desktop Board DH67CL motherboard. This has 6 USB2 ports along with 2 of the new blue USB3 ports. The DAQ instrument connects via USB to the computer. Roughly once every day or two there is a short communication glitch with the USB that causes the instrument to disconnect briefly and then reconnect. This is logged so I know whenever it happens. Occasionally it will cause the data acquisition to stop. I've verified that the glitches will go away if I use the USB3 ports, or if I use a PCI add-on card with USB ports. So it seems that there is something going on with these built-in USB2 ports on this motherboard. I haven't yet had a chance to test with other motherboards. My question: what could be causing these glitches and how to get rid of them for this board, or is there a better motherboard to use? We have standardized on the DH67CL because it's inexpensive, has 3 PCI slots that we need, and is readily available. We don't need the power of higher-end server boards but reliability is important. Thanks. Update: This problem has been reproduced many times on different hardware, though we always use the same model of motherboard (DH67CL) and power supply (Antec EA-430D). I don't think the power requirements are very high but will check on that.

• Computer hangs at BIOS screen. Cannot enter setup.

  I have an HP Pavilion a6500f (it's a year out of warranty) and it's hanging on the blue HP BIOS screen. If I mash F10 while it's starting up, it will say "Entering Setup..." but I will see no results. It will hang there and not do anything. If I actually wait until I can see the screen and then hit F10, there's no response at all and the computer will sit at the BIOS menu. I've dusted and cleaned it out, reseated the memory, switched the RAM slots, and reset the CMOS battery using the reset jumper. I'm out of ideas. I'm pretty sure it's not a hard drive issue, since my problem is at the BIOS. After this post, I'll disconnect the hard drive and try to just boot without it. Anyone have any other ideas? Edit: Okay, so I tried disconnecting the hard drive and now I can get back into the BIOS. I reconnected it and I'm locked out again. So the problem is my hard drive.. I guess I should delete this post unless someone has any ideas as to what's wrong with the drive?

• Recommended Win2k8 Server software to fix my RAID-0 issue

  I'm running an Asus P6T V2 Deluxe. It has six SATA ports and supports onboard RAID. I am using two of those ports for a RAID0 array of 1.5TB Seagate drives using the onboard RAID controller. One of them is giving me SMART warnings and I want to preemptively replace it. I pulled out two other 1.5TB drives from another computer and am ready to use one or both, if necessary. I can't run any SMART diagnostic software from within Windows because it only sees the hardware RAID-0 array, not each individual drive. The first thing I tried was a slow sector-by-sector copy using a free tool called EASEUS Disk Copy. Used the bootdisk, copied (took like 16 hours), unplugged the defective drive and plugged the new one in its place. The motherboard didn't recognize the new drive as being part of the known setup, so it did not want to boot. The second thing I tried was using other software (I forget the name) to copy the partition from within Windows. The first software failed because I had a server operating system. I found another software (I forget the name) which supported a server OS and did a partition copy onto the new drive. This seemed to work and the OS started to boot, but blue screened and started a reboot cycle. I'm assuming the software I was using was no good as it was trying to copy the boot disk while it was in use. I am looking for recommendations on what software to use to fix my problem without doing a re-install. Everything is backed up but my computer works fine and I'd like to avoid re-installation when possible. However, my system would be back up now if I had just started over on a second RAID array. :)

• Why has my computer started to make noises when I turn it on after I put it into sleep mode for the first time a week ago?

  I would usually have my pc on all day and fully shut it down at night time before I went to bed. I decided to put it into sleep mode instead the other day and everything was fine but when I woke it from sleep, I was presented with the blue screen of death and it started with some weird noise that sounded like some spinning part was off balance or possibly hitting something periodically. Sounds like it could be a fan or maybe the HDD. I'm not sure why sleep mode would mess up the hardware. Anyway, now sometimes, randomly, when I turn my computer on from a previous shut down, I still get to hear the noise but the start-up is normal. Sometimes I don't hear anything for the entire duration while I have it on and sometimes it goes away after a few minutes and sometimes it doesn't and I have to restart, like it isn't going away right now. I can hear the noise as I type this. Anyone got possible solutions? I don't want to open the system and mess up other stuff. I'm also not sure if I should take it somewhere to have it fixed - it might not make the noise then and work like normal and nothing would seem like needing to be fixed. Add: I'm running Windows 7, if that's of any relevance.
