  • Unknown problem causing major computer failure, Booting problem with windows 7, mainly with 0x0000000A

    Where do I begin? OS=Windows 7 I think it all started when I ran an installation file. I suspect it may have been a virus (even though AVG scan didnt pick anything up). The installation failed, computer crashed then restarted. In the middle of the reboot, I get BSOD. Normal boot up doesnt work so I use safe mode. Method 1: Not a problem I thought cos I will do what I normally do and that was to recover from my image file. Unfortunately, my Acronis software cant recover in safe mode. Method 2: I created a bootable disc for the Acronis recovery software. Managed to boot to Acronis and started the recovery from image file. This fail with some error message (did not manage to record). Something to do with not be able to copy to $AVG folder. Method 3: At this stage, assumed it was still a virus causing the problem so decided to format that partition to remove everything and hopefully the virus too. Had a lot of problems trying to bypass the system to allow me to format but (i think- more on this later) I managed to do that. Image was recovered, thought problem was resolved. Tried to boot windows but new error: Boot Manager is missing. Read up on this and managed to copy the Boot Manager from my Laptop's Manufacturer's partition (partition contains factory setup image file). Windows loaded but new BSOD with 0x000000A problem. Method 4: Attempted to reinstall factory settings but this failed cos i suspect by formating the partition, I may have removed the recovery software. Tried to create a bootable dvd of factory setting but machine is so bad it continues to crash. Bootable dvd method failed. Method 5:Spent alot of time reading up on this error, even installed a software to help scan and fix the problem. Scan failed and software required money! Anyway, lots of BSOD with different error message like 0x00000001A and 0x0000000D1. Error message changes with some reboots. Method 6: Found a hotfix from the windows site to fix 0x0000000A problem, great I thought! In safe mode, I cant install the file cos of error:0x8007043c. Tried to then install the fix in normal mode but installation just hangs. Returned to safe mode and followed advice to bypass 0x8007043c by changing the BITS status (read here: http://www.vistaheads.com/forums/microsoft-public-windowsupdate/181931-error-number-0x8007043c-windows-update.html). However, my machine at this time is so flaky that it hangs everytime i right mouse click the computer icon. I am at my wits end. Ya help or ideas? Cheers

    I have no OS installed, and I am trying to use a linux boot disc. However it is not a linux problem....if I just leave the computer on at the no operating system found message, it still turns off. I thought maybe it was overheating, but I am 90% sure that is not the problem. What else could cause this?

  • iTunes video black screen until select computer output

    I don't remember this happening before, but now whenever I play any video in iTunes (podcast video, movie, TV show, iTunes extras stuff but the menus work) it just shows a black screen with the sound playing. If I stop it, select "Computer" in the little output control on the iTunes video control panel that pops up, then play again, it works fine. What the heck? Tried rebooting, updating, with and without external monitor. OSX 10.6.6

  • Could one hypothetically upgrade a computer from Windows 95 to Windows 8

    Hypothetically, could you start with a computer running Windows 95, upgrade this to Windows 98, then upgrade this to Windows XP, then upgrade this to Vista, then to 7 and finally to 8 (consumer preview)? What state would the OS be in after so many upgrades? Would any of the native Windows 95 apps still be sticking around in Windows 8? Has anybody done anything like this before? I don't need to do this, I am just asking out of curiosity! Thanks

  • remote desktop computer viewer?

    I would like to install a quad core computer in my dorm at college and use my much slower laptop to be able to control the quad core just as if I had a quad core laptop (control as in i see the gui, not command line control)! Both are on the same college network, though Im also interested in what would be necessary if the computers were on different networks. What would be the best method fot this?   • Computer Locked after period of time

    I have a Windows XP machine that locks itself after an unknown amount of time. I have disabled the screen saver completely, and unchecked "lock computer when coming out of standby". I've even overrode the settings with gpedit. Even still, it locks itself after a while, and it doesn't take long. If it's any sort of hint, the time period for the screensaver is greyed out, even if I choose an actual screensaver.

  • Why is my computer using so much ram?

    I have 16gb of ram installed in my computer, and nearly 70% of it is used at all times. Looking at the processes in task manager the memory being used with everything in there doesn't even add up to 2gb. I have RAPID mode enabled on my ssd which may be using 2gb at most so I would understand that. I am thinking there might be a memory leak somewhere, but I don't really know how I would be able to tell. My performance and process list is below:

  • Find the model of my motherboard without opening the computer [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: Find out what the motherboard on my computer is I need to find the model of my motherboard so I can find what soundcard/chip it uses so I can get some drivers for it. Is there anyway to get this from inside XP? I looked through device manager but haven't seen anything that would tell me. I built the system over a year ago and don't have any receipts to check what it was.

  • Computer wakes up from hibernation at exctly 3:40am every day

    I'm getting tired of waking up to my computer being turned on, and event log shows that it's waking up everyday at 3:40am and most times won't go back to sleep after the determined 30 minutes (maybe from being in the lock screen?). There are no devices armed for wake, activation timers are disabled and all wake options disabled in the BIOS and energy star 4.0c is enabled (was disabled before but no difference).

  • Computer keeps locking me out

    When I'm away from my computer (Windows XP) for more than ~30 minutes, I get locked out, and have to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to login. I've checked the screensaver settings, and it's not set to lock the screen. Does anyone know what else could be causing this? Thanks

    I play games on my laptop, and they run at about 30-45 fps, which is bearable for me. But when I try to stream, the frame rate drops to 20 or lower, which is unplayable for me. I have a second computer though (a Mac, the laptop is Win7), and I'm wondering if there is anyway to stream the game content (onto Twitch.tv) from my laptop using my Mac. Is this possible, and how would I go about doing it?

    I would like to rent a remote computer, like a virtual Vista or Windows 7 desktop, and run everything on it and access it with RDP (fastest). It could be virtual (running on Xen or Hyper-V) and the price needs to be right. Windows 7 to Windows 7 has nice RDP offload feature and doing stuff in the cloud is fast. Anywhere I could rent something like that? I've been using Amazon and CloudLayer, but they are optimized for server versions of Windows.

  • Mac 10.6 Universal Binary scipy: cephes/specfun "_aswfa_" symbol not found

    Hi folks, I can't get scipy to function in 32 bit mode when compiled as a i386/x86_64 universal binary, and executed on my 64 bit 10.6.2 MacPro1,1. My python setup With the help of this answer, I built a 32/64 bit intel universal binary of python 2.6.4 with the intention of using the arch command to select between the architectures. (I managed to make some universal binaries of a few libraries I wanted using lipo.) That all works. I then installed scipy according to the instructions on hyperjeff's article, only with more up-to-date numpy (1.4.0) and skipping the bit about moving numpy aside briefly during the installation of scipy. Now, everything except scipy seems to be working as far as I can tell, and I can indeed select between 32 and 64 bit mode using arch -i386 python and arch -x86_64 python. I'm stuck. Things I may try but haven't figured out how yet include compiling specfun.so myself manually, somehow. I would imagine that scipy isn't broken for all 32 bit machines, so I guess something is wrong with the way I've installed it, but I can't figure out what. I don't really expect a full answer given my fairly unique (?) setup, but if anyone has any clues that might point me in the right direction, they'd be greatly appreciated. (edit) More details to address questions: I'm using gfortran (GNU Fortran from GCC 4.2.1 Apple Inc. build 5646).   • Drools flow architecture, Drools flow events with AND join nodes

    I have been evaluating a number of frameworks including jBPM and Drools flow for my application requirements. Lots of the opinions seem to be inclined towards Drools flow as its more flexible, knowledge oriented, easier to integrate with business rules, etc.. The application is some sort of an Email Campaign manager , where different customers can sign in, prepare (design) and launch email campaigns. The application should be able to do the following : 1- Receive a list of email addresses, send emails to each of these addresses starting from a certain date and during a certain time interval of the day , do some custom actions, and then wait for reply emails. 2- If a reply email is received and depending on the response text of the email , and depending on the time the email was received certain actions need to happen, web service calls need to take place, and error handling for these calls. 3- The application will manage and run many and different campaigns (different customers and different flows for each customer) at any point of time. The first question is : Is Drools flow the way to go about this? My main concerns are scalability, suspending, resuming flows, and long wait, and flows management. As you see from the requirements : There is a scheduling part : Certain flows need to be run at a certain point in time, they need to get suspended and then resumed. For example start sending emails starting on Dec 1st 2010 and send emails only in the time interval between 08:00 and 17:00 GMT. By then it might be that all subscribers have been sent emails, but it might not be the case, the process needs to (resume) on Dec 2nd and send a second batch, however certain (users) already received emails and they should be able to (continue at different stages of the flow) There are long wait states : Days or even weeks , i need to persist, suspend / resume and terminate flows (manage flows) External Events : This is where i got stuck first, i tried to put together a simple flow (see attached screenshot) See image http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/9620/workflowwithevents.png , there is a start node , connected to an action node, connected to a join. An event node is connected to a second action node, which is connected to the join. The join is an AND join , after the join there is an action and the end node. The flow does not continue past the AND join and the flow seems to get stuck. The action following the node does not get triggered. I also went through the drools flow documentation , and all the example codes, however i didn't find anything there. In addition any hints about the way to go about architecting the solution, and implementing it would be great.

  • Why does my motherboard go through an endless reboot cycle when 8 GB of memory is attempted vs 6 GB?

    I never got an answer in my googling to this about a year ago and have an extra stick of memory I'd like to be able to use. When is inserted the computer starts, and then reboots immediately in an endless reboot cycle. As soon as the 4th stick is removed, the computer works fine. Right now I have 6 GB of my 8 GB installed. Is there a solution that I am missing to enabling this motherboard to actually boot up with all 8 GB (it supports it). Right now it won't even boot up to BIOS with the 4 sticks... only 3? I was looking for recommendations and advice for a new project I was setting up that will allow for a few key things Scalability Manage multiple overlapping releases Geared more around .NET however allows for legacy applications (VB, ASP and VBS) I am really looking for any lessons learned from other teams. I come from a StarTeam background and we used view labels and release labels to manage multiple overlapping projects. View labels geared more towards compiled code and SQL and the revision labels were used for VB/ASP projects. Thank you for any advice and sharing your experience and frustrations with other companies you might have worked with in the past.
