shared hosting: ssl domain receives all server's ssl requests, google gets it wrong

This website is hosted on a shared server. I've recently had my hosting provider secure our website using SSL (https://domain.com instead of http://domain.com). Ever since then, all https requests sent to the server are redirected to my website. https://otherdomain.com leads to a warning, then, if you continue, to my website. Ok, my fault, i should have known SSL means 1 IP, otherwise, this thing can happen. But... Google Search results for my website's target keywords is now displaying these websites above my own, even though they have nothing even remotely related to the target keywords! already done: provide canonical url in the html page. told the problem to the server manager, who tells me it's normal but he'll look for a solution. This was one week ago, no answer since. I have no idea why Google is providing these https urls: i thought someone would have to submit them, or have them inside an html page in order for Google to actually index dummy https domains, but i see no reason why someone would do that. Any suggestion on how to solve this situation? Golive is in one week and SEO looks really bad because of that.

How to find domain registrar and DNS hosting with good DNSSEC support?

Simplified problem I want to buy a domain and make a website that is fully secured with DNSSEC. Background I've been hearing about the insecurity of DNS for years. I've watched all of the talks by Dan Kaminsky and others from DNS exploits to The future of DNS Security Panel. I knew that using DNS without security is a disaster waiting to happen. I followed the development of the DNSSEC standard. I celebrated the key signing ceremony. Everything was on the right track to finally have a secure DNS system in place. And now more than 2 years later I wanted to just do what everyone said I should do: use DNSSEC for a new domain. So I need a domain registrar and a DNS hosting service that supports DNSSEC. Surprisingly it is not that easy to even find out who does support DNSSEC. It was actually much easier to find info on DNSSEC two years ago when everyone was going to support DNSSEC Real Soon Now but now years passed and I hardly see any progress done. I just hope that I was just looking in the wrong places and someone here will explain all of the doubts. I hope that other people who want to have a secure website will also find this question useful. What is needed registrar and DNS servers with full DNSSEC support for .com domains What is not needed IPv6 support Web hosting anything more What I found out so far Go Daddy offers Premium DNS service for additional $36 per year that lets you "Secure up to 5 domains with DNSSEC". easyDNS has DNSSEC available in Beta across all service levels (you need to enable the "beta" flag in configuration) but it doesn't seem to be production ready and judging from the lack of updates it isn't a feature of highest priority (the last update from March 2011 on the easyDNS blog). Name.com - according to The Register (US domain registrar does IPv6, DNSSEC) it has DNSSEC support since 2010 but right now (October 2012) I couldn't find anything related to DNSSEC on their website. Dynadot that is very often recommended doesn't support DNSSEC Namecheap that is also often recommended doesn't support DNSSEC. The support answer from 2011 suggested that it was being added but in 2012 still no ETA is given to customers. DynDNS was supposed to support DNSSEC, I found a link explaining DNSSEC support but it gives 404 Not Found page and offers a search box - when searching for DNSSEC I get "No results were found for your query." GKG was recommended online for DNSSEC support but it's hard to find any information on the level of DNSSEC support - there is a brief explanation on what is DNSSEC and how to sign Delegation Signer records in their FAQ but no information about the level of actual support can be found. Registrar with good security, DNS hosting, and DNSSEC and IPv6 resolvers? In no. 1 no one is ever mentioning DNS at all. In no. 2 answers only mention the .se TLD, there are very few answers and they seem very outdated. In no. 3 one answer says "On projects that demand higher security, I might look for a web host that supports DNSSEC" but no more information is provided. The only relevant answers are in no. 4 where easyDNS is recommended by someone who has never used them personally. Meanwhile, as of October 2012, the support of DNSSEC is described as "in beta" on the easyDNS feature list. Another one recommends SiteGround but searching their site for DNSSEC returns no results. Other answers recommend web hosting providers that don't meet the requirement of DNSSEC support. Also the question mentioned above lists 9 very specific requirements other than only DNSSEC (like eg. HTTP-only login cookies, two-factor authentications, no DNS record limits, DNS statistics of queries/day, audit trails etc.) which might have excluded many possible recommendations if one is only interested in DNSSEC support. Conclusions I thought that by the end of 2012 the support of DNSSEC among domain registrars and DNS providers would be nearly universal. I am shocked that the support seems virtually nonexistent. Is this a result of some serious problems with the DNSSEC adoption? Or is it just not a hot topic and no one bothers anymore? According to the DNSSEC Scoreboard roughly about 0.1% of .com domains support DNSSEC. Could that be caused by the lack of DNSSEC support among registrars and DNS providers, is the information too hard to find or maybe no one cares? There is even no "dnssec" tag here. Questions The information is surprisingly hard to find. That is why I am asking for first-hand experience and personal recommendations. Has anyone here actually set up a website with DNSSEC, from the domain registration to the configuration of DNS servers? Can anyone recommend any of the registrars mentioned above? Can anyone recommend any registrar not mentioned above?

Sitemaps - do I need to submit each sitemap in sitemap_index.xml to Google Webmaster tools?

I am having a Wordpress blog on my CentOS server. Joomla Sub-Menu Won't Expand

Hello, The popular items menu on www.nfpn.org (displayed in right side bar) has sub-menu items defined. When someone navigates to a top-level page that's represented in that menu, I'd like for the child items to be displayed. I've played with various mod_mainmenu settings for that menu (in the modules section) without success. How would I get the appropriate sub-menu to expand? I'm using Joomla 1.5.21. Thank you, Ben

I run a blog in google blogger. I have many labels and I am searching for a way to make labels as tabs (where the pages gadget/widget is) and subtabs. Let me be more specific. I have a label called Games and four labels called PC Games, XBOX 360 Games, PS3 Games and Wii Games. What I want is not only each of the labels to be put in the pages gadget/widget is ( I found some information on that matter here) but also a way to make the four specialized labels that I mentioned in my example to be put in a droplist under the label/tab games (i want the droplist to appear when the mouse hovers above the tab games and also that tab to be clickable and show all the posts I have labeled Games

How to push changes from Test server to Live server?

As a beginner, I finally noticed the issue with making changes to the live server I've been working on, now that I have a couple users on it, since I bring it down so often. I created an EC2 image of my live server and set up a separate instance on EC2, so now I have 2 EC2 instances, Stage and Production. I set up GitHub and push changes to stage and test my code there, and when it's all done and working, I push it to the production branch, and everything is good. And there is a slight issue here since I name my files config_stage.js and config_production.js and set up .gitignore on each server, and in my code, I would have it read the ENV flags and set up the appropriate configs, is this the correct approach? And my main question is: how do you keep track of non-code changes to the server? For example, I installed HAProxy, Stunnel, Redis, MongoDB and several other things onto the Stage server for testing and now that it's all working and good, how do I deploy them to production? Right now, I'm just keeping track of everything I installed and copying configuration files over, which is very tedious and I'm afraid I may have missed a step somewhere. Is there a better way to port these changes over from my test server to my live server?

My access log on my web server has a ton of http HEAD requests coming from porn sites. What are HEAD requests and are they doing something bad with my site? Bingbot seems to be adding "ForceRecrawl: 0" to URLs when crawling my sites

I'm seeing this in the iis-logs of two websites that I maintain: GET /an/existing/page/on/my/site+ForceRecrawl:+0 - 80 - 207.46.195.105 HTTP/1.1 Mozilla/5.0+(compatible;+bingbot/2.0;++http://www.bing.com/bingbot.htm) I get about one or two of these per day from these IP addresses: 207.46.195.105, 65.52.110.190.. an more, all belonging to msnbot-ip.search.msn.com Probably Microsoft has a bug in their crawler? Any way, doing a search on "ForceRecrawl: 0" in major search engines comes up with a bunch of random sites. Doing the search on StackOverflow or here gave no results (to my amazement). Am I the only one seeing this? I first noticed these on the 9th of this month, and I'm seeing them pass almost daily since... Another thing that I think is crazy, is that the URL http://www.bing.com/bingbot.htm redirects to mail.live.com (hotmail). Currently I'm returning 404's but I'm considering to catch these, strip the trailing " ForceRecrawl: 0" and process as if it were a legitimate url. Could anyone shed some light on this? Could it have to do with some configuration or so in Bing's Webmaster Tools?

Primary domain in vps in vps has been deactivated

This is my scenario: I have a vps with two domains (example1.com, example2.com). When I started with this vps I set example1.com as primary domain and the nameserver were configured with the pattern ns1.example.com, ns2.example1.com. The domains were brought in name.com. Across the time, I usually only work whit the domain example2.com, for that reason I stopped to pay example1.com anual registration and just keep the example2.com. But, today my vps is unreacheable because the main domain was deactivated last ago 23th. I never imagined that it could affect my server. So, I am so worried because I don't know if rebuild the vps is the solution here because I could lost my data. Can you take me to the right direction in order to recover my vps?

When I try to click and launch some of the links set to open in new window, it is being treated as a pop-up window [migrated]

For the past few days, we are facing issue with the chrome browser behavior. This is related to opening links set to open in new tab/window. The details are as follow: I have a collection of links and each link points to different resource to be opened in a new tab/window. The code is as follow: <a class="cssClass" rid="1114931" href="http://www.domain.com/resources/abc.html" title="Link1" tabindex="4">Link 1</a> And there are few checks/filters over accessing the resources which have been implemented as onClick handler over the links. In case any of the validations fails, the onClick handler returns false and the default behavior of the link does not happens i.e. links does not get open. One of such (last) checks includes AJAX call in sync mode. Dokuwiki: Moving Just the data directory on other server

I have installed dokuwiki on IIS7. As per my teams requirement we have to move just the Data directory to other server location. e.g - IIS7 installed Dokuwiki location: C:\inetpub\wwwroot\dokuwiki\conf - data location on the other server we want: U:\Archive\LP_Archive\SH_Systems\DEV01\dokuwiki So for doing that I followed pointers on dokuwiki install iis7 As per the above link, I tried adding IUSR to data folder permissions but its failing due to my insufficient privileges. And without that IUSR permission set on data folder I am getting an error as "The datadir ('pages') at is not found, isn't accessible or writable". Is there any other way to make it work? Is there any other account than IUSR I can use?

Hello, I have been writing articles on the wordpress.com blog, now i am looking to move it to self-hosted wordpress blog but i wonder: 1) Should i move all my articles on the new blog or just put an article on my last blog that more articles will be posted on my new blog? 2) If i move all articles on my new blog, i am not sure about how google will react to it because there are articles with good number of visitors, won't this be seo-un-friendly because i am not sure but google will re-create page reputation stuff, etc or those articles will have same popularity even if i move elsewhere? 3) What are the implications and side-effects in moving from wordpress.com blog to self-hosted wordpress blog? De-share third level .name domain

Sometime ago I registered a third level .name domain of the type john.doe.name (this is just an example-my domain is not actually john.doe.name). I just realised that I could have registered the entire second level domain doe.name, which would grant me control of the third level one anyway. Since I already registered the third level, doe.name is now "shared". I have 2 questions: 1) How do I check if I am the only one using the shared second level domain? (normal whois lookup doesn't give any result) 2) Can I "de-share" the domain and buy the entire second level domain? Cheers!

I'd like it so that a request for campaign.com internally rewrites to a particular page of the Drupal site. Note Drupal uses an .htaccess file in the document root. Specifically uri and args on line 4 seem correct, the internal redirect on line 7 seems right, and the pass through on line 12 seems right (because the file index.php exists). But for some reason it seems the query string's been discarded/ignored around the time of the internal redirect. I'm completely stumped. Also, if anyone could provide a reference on understanding the rewrite log, that might help. It'd be great if there's a way to track the query string through the internal redirect. FWIW I'm using WampServer 2.1 with Apache 2.2.17.

Footer not stretching 100% when horizontally scrolled

Disable comments / Spam protection

My client site is built in Silverstripe, there is a news page, and it allows people to leave comments. Unfortunately we've got loads of spam emails. I'm new to this, is there any way we can disable the comment field by default? How do I do it? Alternatively is there easy way for me to install a spam protection? Thanks heaps. Is the W3 standard a major factor when google decides SERP position?

I have a dynamic php website which index only has around 800 errors according to the w3 validator online. I have tried checking major websites like ebay, stackoverflow and others also, all with around 400 errors. So my first thought is, what good is that validator when it always displays errors? Secondly, will the errors affect my SERP ranking? ie, will me fixing these errors as good as I can increase my Google search position? Thanks

PhP/HTML play button [migrated]

I'm wanting to make my own small webpage, I've got a domain Saoo.eu As you see there is a small play button in the corner witch plays a playlist. Is there anyway to have that playbutton on each page I'd add in the future without resetting every time the page changes? Am I forced to use iFrames for that? Simple MediaWiki question

I'm thinking about making a mediawiki website. At first I'd like to try it at localhost. I'm running Kubuntu 11.10, so I did: sudo aptitude install apache2 mysql-server php5 php5-mysql php5-cli And I also fetched the latest mediawiki to: /home/boris/Its/sites/mediawiki-1.17.0 Now I'm supposed to open http://localhost/home/boris/Its/sites/mediawiki-1.17.0/index.php But firefox says the page is not found. While http://localhost works. If I get it right - I have to open index.php to install mediawiki. So my question is - what do I do wrong? I'm really sorry for this is might be a very simple question. By the way do I have to make a db beforehand? Is it possible to use mongoDB as a db with mediawiki?

When I search for this query I could not able to find my website's page listed as a result?! In some cases I navigate to the third or the fourth result page and I could not find it! What are factors that make my website loss its average position for a search query? and when Google webmasters tools updates their values?

Unit testing is… well, flawed.

Hey someone had to say it. I clearly recall my first IT job. I was appointed Systems Co-coordinator for a leading South African retailer at store level. Don’t get me wrong, there is absolutely nothing wrong with an honest day’s labor and in fact I highly recommend it, however I’m obliged to refer to the designation cautiously; in reality all I had to do was monitor in-store prices and two UNIX front line controllers. If anything went wrong – I only had to phone it in… Luckily that wasn’t all I did. My duties extended to some other interesting annual occurrence – stock take. Despite a bit more curious affair, it was still a tedious process that took weeks of preparation and several nights to complete. Then also I remember that no matter how elaborate our planning was, the entire exercise would be rendered useless if we couldn’t get the basics right – that being the act of counting. Sounds simple right? We’ll with a store which could potentially carry over tens of thousands of different items… we’ll let’s just say I believe that’s when I first became a coffee addict. In those days the act of counting stock was a very humble process. Nothing like we have today. A staff member would be assigned a bin or shelve filled with items he or she had to sort then count. Thereafter they had to record their findings on a complementary piece of paper. Every night I would manage several teams. Each team was divided into two groups - counters and auditors. Both groups had the same task, only auditors followed shortly on the heels of the counters, recounting stock levels, making sure the original count correspond to their findings. It was a simple yet hugely responsible orchestration of people and thankfully there was one fundamental and golden rule I could always abide by to ensure things run smoothly – No-one was allowed to audit their own work. Nope, not even on nights when I didn’t have enough staff available. This meant I too at times had to get up there and get counting, or have the audit stand over until the next evening. The reason for this was obvious - late at night and with so much to do we were prone to make some mistakes, then on the recount, without a fresh set of eyes, you were likely to repeat the offence. Now years later this rule or guideline still holds true as we develop software (as far removed as software development from counting stock may be). For some reason it is a fundamental guideline we’re simply ignorant of. We write our code, we write our tests and thus commit the same horrendous offence. Yes, the procedure of writing unit tests as practiced in most development houses today – is flawed. Most if not all of the tests we write today exercise application logic – our logic. They are based on the way we believe an application or method should/may/will behave or function. As we write our tests, our unit tests mirror our best understanding of the inner workings of our application code. Unfortunately these tests will therefore also include (or be unaware of) any imperfections and errors on our part. If your logic is flawed as you write your initial code, chances are, without a fresh set of eyes, you will commit the same error second time around too. Not even experience seems to be a suitable solution. It certainly helps to have deeper insight, but is that really the answer we should be looking for? Is that really failsafe? What about code review? Code review is certainly an answer. You could have one developer coding away and another (or team) making sure the logic is sound. The practice however has its obvious drawbacks. Firstly and mainly it is resource intensive and from what I’ve seen in most development houses, given heavy deadlines, this guideline is seldom adhered to. Hardly ever do we have the resources, money or time readily available. So what other options are out there? A quest to find some solution revealed a project by Microsoft Research called PEX. PEX is a framework which creates several test scenarios for each method or class you write, automatically. Think of it as your own personal auditor. Within a few clicks the framework will auto generate several unit tests for a given class or method and save them to a single project. PEX help to audit your work. It lends a fresh set of eyes to any project you’re working on and best of all; it is cost effective and fast. Does Google use any “Language” flags / tags set within a PDF file when determining its language?

When determining the language of a HTML page, I understand that Google looks at any language declarations that the page owner has set, and then also applies its own language detection algorithms. But does Google similarly look at language meta data set in PDF files when determining a PDF file's language? (Authors of PDF files can set document-wide properties describing the language (or languages) contained within it.) Or does Google rely exclusively on language detection algorithms and disregard the language flag set within the PDF file? Can anyone shed any light?
