  • 404 when getting private YouTube video even when logged in with the owner's account using gdata-pyth

    - by Gonzalo
    If a YouTube video is set as private and I try to fetch it using the gdata Python API a 404 RequestError is raised, even though I have done a programmatic login with the account that owns that video: from gdata.youtube import service yt_service = service.YouTubeService(email=my_email, password=my_password, client_id=my_client_id, source=my_source, developer_key=my_developer_key) yt_service.ProgrammaticLogin() yt_service.GetYouTubeVideoEntry(video_id='IcVqemzfyYs') --------------------------------------------------------------------------- RequestError Traceback (most recent call last) <ipython console> /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/gdata/youtube/service.pyc in GetYouTubeVideoEntry(self, uri, video_id) 203 elif video_id and not uri: 204 uri = '%s/%s' % (YOUTUBE_VIDEO_URI, video_id) --> 205 return self.Get(uri, converter=gdata.youtube.YouTubeVideoEntryFromString) 206 207 def GetYouTubeContactFeed(self, uri=None, username='default'): /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/gdata/service.pyc in Get(self, uri, extra_headers, redirects_remaining, encoding, converter) 1100 'body': result_body} 1101 else: -> 1102 raise RequestError, {'status': server_response.status, 1103 'reason': server_response.reason, 'body': result_body} 1104 RequestError: {'status': 404, 'body': 'Video not found', 'reason': 'Not Found'} This happens every time, unless I go into my YouTube account (through the YouTube website) and set it public, after that I can set it as private and back to public using the Python API. Am I missing a step or is there another (or any) way to fetch a YouTube video set as private from the API? Thanks in advance.

  • how to get the latitude or longitude in HTML 5

    - by steven spielberg
    few month ago i write something to get the latitude or longitude from google API. latter i get the database from drupal for latitude or longitude to most of city in worlds. but the problem is that the same city name can be found two or more times in a area. like Firozabad in India and bangladesh both. Agra in UP and agar in Rajasthan. means the confusion in name by user if they found two city by same name they are confused. i hear that HTML 5 support latitude or longitude of the visiter but i need latitude or longitude where they are born or city they want to use to fill a form. how i can get the latitude or longtiude from API like google and some other. the process is that: user put the location in textbox for getting their latitude or longitude. for right thing i want to show them all location [if same thing found more then one]. they can choose the right location and after click they can get the lati and langitude. how i can do this using any API.

  • Google calendar query returns at most 25 entries

    - by Dean Hill
    I'm trying to delete all calendar entries from today forward. I run a query then call getEntries() on the query result. getEntries() always returns 25 entries (or less if there are fewer than 25 entries on the calendar). Why aren't all the entries returned? I'm expecting about 80 entries. As a test, I tried running the query, deleting the 25 entries returned, running the query again, deleting again, etc. This works, but there must be a better way. Below is the Java code that only runs the query once. CalendarQuery myQuery = new CalendarQuery(feedUrl); DateFormat dfGoogle = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd'T00:00:00'"); Date dt = Calendar.getInstance().getTime(); myQuery.setMinimumStartTime(DateTime.parseDateTime(dfGoogle.format(dt))); // Make the end time far into the future so we delete everything myQuery.setMaximumStartTime(DateTime.parseDateTime("2099-12-31T23:59:59")); // Execute the query and get the response CalendarEventFeed resultFeed = service.query(myQuery, CalendarEventFeed.class); // !!! This returns 25 (or less if there are fewer than 25 entries on the calendar) !!! int test = resultFeed.getEntries().size(); // Delete all the entries returned by the query for (int j = 0; j < resultFeed.getEntries().size(); j++) { CalendarEventEntry entry = resultFeed.getEntries().get(j); entry.delete(); } PS: I've looked at the Data API Developer's Guide and the Google Data API Javadoc. These sites are okay, but not great. Does anyone know of additional Google API documentation?

  • steam condenser java errors

    - by w0rm
    I've been working on a little project involving Steam Condenser, a Steam API written in Java, but I haven't been able to actually do anything with it. I'll explain. This is what the wiki tells me: SteamId id = new SteamId("demomenz"); GameStats stats = id.getGameStats("tf2"); List achievements = stats.getAchievements(); The problem is, eclipse doesn't like it apparently, as it spits out this error: The constructor SteamId(String) is undefined and it gives me the option to change it to: SteamId id = new SteamId("demomenz", false); But at this point a different error comes out: The constructor SteamId(Object, boolean) is not visible So, I'm assuming this function is internal to the API, and should not be called from the outside. If anyone is familiar with this, or has a clue on why I'm getting this error (I'm fairly new to Java development), an answer would be greatly appreciated. UPDATE: The constructor SteamId(String) is undefined This is if I use SteamId.create(ConvertedID); (ConvertedID is a String containing the Steam64 ID). At this point I believe this API is not that well written, at least for java. Any other idea?

  • Translating with Google Translate without API and C# Code

    - by Rick Strahl
    Some time back I created a data base driven ASP.NET Resource Provider along with some tools that make it easy to edit ASP.NET resources interactively in a Web application. One of the small helper features of the interactive resource admin tool is the ability to do simple translations using both Google Translate and Babelfish. Here's what this looks like in the resource administration form: When a resource is displayed, the user can click a Translate button and it will show the current resource text and then lets you set the source and target languages to translate. The Go button fires the translation for both Google and Babelfish and displays them - pressing use then changes the language of the resource to the target language and sets the resource value to the newly translated value. It's a nice and quick way to get a quick translation going. Ch… Ch… Changes Originally, both implementations basically did some screen scraping of the interactive Web sites and retrieved translated text out of result HTML. Screen scraping is always kind of an iffy proposition as content can be changed easily, but surprisingly that code worked for many years without fail. Recently however, Google at least changed their input pages to use AJAX callbacks and the page updates no longer worked the same way. End result: The Google translate code was broken. Now, Google does have an official API that you can access, but the API is being deprecated and you actually need to have an API key. Since I have public samples that people can download the API key is an issue if I want people to have the samples work out of the box - the only way I could even do this is by sharing my API key (not allowed).   However, after a bit of spelunking and playing around with the public site however I found that Google's interactive translate page actually makes callbacks using plain public access without an API key. By intercepting some of those AJAX calls and calling them directly from code I was able to get translation back up and working with minimal fuss, by parsing out the JSON these AJAX calls return. I don't think this particular Warning: This is hacky code, but after a fair bit of testing I found this to work very well with all sorts of languages and accented and escaped text etc. as long as you stick to small blocks of translated text. I thought I'd share it in case anybody else had been relying on a screen scraping mechanism like I did and needed a non-API based replacement. Here's the code: /// <summary> /// Translates a string into another language using Google's translate API JSON calls. /// <seealso>Class TranslationServices</seealso> /// </summary> /// <param name="Text">Text to translate. Should be a single word or sentence.</param> /// <param name="FromCulture"> /// Two letter culture (en of en-us, fr of fr-ca, de of de-ch) /// </param> /// <param name="ToCulture"> /// Two letter culture (as for FromCulture) /// </param> public string TranslateGoogle(string text, string fromCulture, string toCulture) { fromCulture = fromCulture.ToLower(); toCulture = toCulture.ToLower(); // normalize the culture in case something like en-us was passed // retrieve only en since Google doesn't support sub-locales string[] tokens = fromCulture.Split('-'); if (tokens.Length > 1) fromCulture = tokens[0]; // normalize ToCulture tokens = toCulture.Split('-'); if (tokens.Length > 1) toCulture = tokens[0]; string url = string.Format(@"http://translate.google.com/translate_a/t?client=j&text={0}&hl=en&sl={1}&tl={2}", HttpUtility.UrlEncode(text),fromCulture,toCulture); // Retrieve Translation with HTTP GET call string html = null; try { WebClient web = new WebClient(); // MUST add a known browser user agent or else response encoding doen't return UTF-8 (WTF Google?) web.Headers.Add(HttpRequestHeader.UserAgent, "Mozilla/5.0"); web.Headers.Add(HttpRequestHeader.AcceptCharset, "UTF-8"); // Make sure we have response encoding to UTF-8 web.Encoding = Encoding.UTF8; html = web.DownloadString(url); } catch (Exception ex) { this.ErrorMessage = Westwind.Globalization.Resources.Resources.ConnectionFailed + ": " + ex.GetBaseException().Message; return null; } // Extract out trans":"...[Extracted]...","from the JSON string string result = Regex.Match(html, "trans\":(\".*?\"),\"", RegexOptions.IgnoreCase).Groups[1].Value; if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(result)) { this.ErrorMessage = Westwind.Globalization.Resources.Resources.InvalidSearchResult; return null; } //return WebUtils.DecodeJsString(result); // Result is a JavaScript string so we need to deserialize it properly JavaScriptSerializer ser = new JavaScriptSerializer(); return ser.Deserialize(result, typeof(string)) as string; } To use the code is straightforward enough - simply provide a string to translate and a pair of two letter source and target languages: string result = service.TranslateGoogle("Life is great and one is spoiled when it goes on and on and on", "en", "de"); TestContext.WriteLine(result); How it works The code to translate is fairly straightforward. It basically uses the URL I snagged from the Google Translate Web Page slightly changed to return a JSON result (&client=j) instead of the funky nested PHP style JSON array that the default returns. The JSON result returned looks like this: {"sentences":[{"trans":"Das Leben ist großartig und man wird verwöhnt, wenn es weiter und weiter und weiter geht","orig":"Life is great and one is spoiled when it goes on and on and on","translit":"","src_translit":""}],"src":"en","server_time":24} I use WebClient to make an HTTP GET call to retrieve the JSON data and strip out part of the full JSON response that contains the actual translated text. Since this is a JSON response I need to deserialize the JSON string in case it's encoded (for upper/lower ASCII chars or quotes etc.). Couple of odd things to note in this code: First note that a valid user agent string must be passed (or at least one starting with a common browser identification - I use Mozilla/5.0). Without this Google doesn't encode the result with UTF-8, but instead uses a ISO encoding that .NET can't easily decode. Google seems to ignore the character set header and use the user agent instead which is - odd to say the least. The other is that the code returns a full JSON response. Rather than use the full response and decode it into a custom type that matches Google's result object, I just strip out the translated text. Yeah I know that's hacky but avoids an extra type and firing up the JavaScript deserializer. My internal version uses a small DecodeJsString() method to decode Javascript without the overhead of a full JSON parser. It's obviously not rocket science but as mentioned above what's nice about it is that it works without an Google API key. I can't vouch on how many translates you can do before there are cut offs but in my limited testing running a few stress tests on a Web server under load I didn't run into any problems. Limitations There are some restrictions with this: It only works on single words or single sentences - multiple sentences (delimited by .) are cut off at the ".". There is also a length limitation which appears to happen at around 220 characters or so. While that may not sound  like much for typical word or phrase translations this this is plenty of length. Use with a grain of salt - Google seems to be trying to limit their exposure to usage of the Translate APIs so this code might break in the future, but for now at least it works. FWIW, I also found that Google's translation is not as good as Babelfish, especially for contextual content like sentences. Google is faster, but Babelfish tends to give better translations. This is why in my translation tool I show both Google and Babelfish values retrieved. You can check out the code for this in the West Wind West Wind Web Toolkit's TranslationService.cs file which contains both the Google and Babelfish translation code pieces. Ironically the Babelfish code has been working forever using screen scraping and continues to work just fine today. I think it's a good idea to have multiple translation providers in case one is down or changes its format, hence the dual display in my translation form above. I hope this has been helpful to some of you - I've actually had many small uses for this code in a number of applications and it's sweet to have a simple routine that performs these operations for me easily. • WinVerifyTrust API problem

    - by Shayan
    I'm using WinVerifyTrust API in windows XP and I don't want any kind of user interaction. But when I set the WTD_UI_NONE attribute, although it doesn't show any dialog boxes, but it waits for a long time on the files that in fact wanted user interaction (I mean files which without mentioning the NO UI it will ask the user for that file). This is my code: WINTRUST_FILE_INFO FileData; memset(&FileData, 0, sizeof(FileData)); FileData.cbStruct = sizeof(WINTRUST_FILE_INFO); wchar_t fileName[32769]; FileData.pcwszFilePath = fileName; FileData.hFile = NULL; FileData.pgKnownSubject = NULL; /* WVTPolicyGUID specifies the policy to apply on the file WINTRUST_ACTION_GENERIC_VERIFY_V2 policy checks: 1) The certificate used to sign the file chains up to a root certificate located in the trusted root certificate store. This implies that the identity of the publisher has been verified by a certification authority. 2) In cases where user interface is displayed (which this example does not do), WinVerifyTrust will check for whether the end entity certificate is stored in the trusted publisher store, implying that the user trusts content from this publisher. 3) The end entity certificate has sufficient permission to sign code, as indicated by the presence of a code signing EKU or no EKU. */ GUID WVTPolicyGUID = WINTRUST_ACTION_GENERIC_VERIFY_V2; WINTRUST_DATA WinTrustData; // Initialize the WinVerifyTrust input data structure. // Default all fields to 0. memset(&WinTrustData, 0, sizeof(WinTrustData)); WinTrustData.cbStruct = sizeof(WinTrustData); // Use default code signing EKU. WinTrustData.pPolicyCallbackData = NULL; // No data to pass to SIP. WinTrustData.pSIPClientData = NULL; // Disable WVT UI. WinTrustData.dwUIChoice = WTD_UI_NONE; // No revocation checking. WinTrustData.fdwRevocationChecks = WTD_REVOKE_NONE; // Verify an embedded signature on a file. WinTrustData.dwUnionChoice = WTD_CHOICE_FILE; // Default verification. WinTrustData.dwStateAction = 0; // Not applicable for default verification of embedded signature. WinTrustData.hWVTStateData = NULL; // Not used. WinTrustData.pwszURLReference = NULL; // Default. WinTrustData.dwProvFlags = WTD_REVOCATION_CHECK_END_CERT; // This is not applicable if there is no UI because it changes // the UI to accommodate running applications instead of // installing applications. WinTrustData.dwUIContext = 0; // Set pFile. • Issues with Rails 3.1 API with Query String to Create action on Mac OSX Mountain Lion

    - by hjaved
    Hi I've been stuck on this problem for a while and would appreciate your help. I'm writing an API to allow an external source like a Browser Query String or a smartphone to enter some model User info in a form and hit the User create action to write the data to the db. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong with the code below. I've also observed that if I have code like @user = User.new(params[:user]), that this approach only works when a user enters their data within the form. And that if I have code such as @user = User.new( name: params[:name], location: params[:location], password = params[:password], email: params[:email]), that this code ONLY works for a Query string entry, but NOT both Query string AND regular form submission. Why is that and how can I write the code above in the Users Controller Create action, so that it takes care of both situations? URL used: localhost:3000/users/create?name=John&&[email protected]&&password=secret&&location=SanFrancisco&date=06122012 The date is of type string but it doesn't show up in the database. Why? Everything else does. UsersController.rb def create @user = User.new(params[:user]) if @user.save session[:uid] = @user.id redirect_to thanks_path, notice: "Welcome #{@user.name}!" else redirect_to root_path end end New User Form: <%=u.text_field :name, placeholder: "Name"%><br> <%=u.text_field :email, placeholder: "Email"%><br> <%=u.password_field :password, placeholder: "Password"%><br> <%=u.text_field :location, placeholder: "City"%><br> <%=u.text_field :date, placeholder: "Date"%><br> <%if params[:partner_id]%> <%=u.hidden_field :partner_id, value: params[:partner_id]%> <%end%> <button class="btn btn-large btn-primary">Enter</button> I also tried to create a separate method called remotecreate for User creation for something other than a regular web form. I entered remotecreate in the Query string but it didn't work. def remotecreate @user = User.create(name: params[:name], email: params[:email], password: params[:password], location: params[:location], date: params[:date]) if @user.save session[:uid] = @user.id redirect_to thanks_path, notice: "Welcome #{@user.name}" else redirect_to root_path end end Thanks!

  • Can I use the whatthetrend.com API to get daily and weekly twitter trends?

    - by Charles S.
    The twitter API allows me to receive daily trends and weekly trends (in addition to current trends, of course) as either JSON or XML. Is there an equivalent with the whatthetrend.com API? I don't see a method/parameter at first glance but I wanted to see if anyone out there knew a way... http://api.whatthetrend.com/api There's a method to lookup trend definition by keyword so I guess I could use that based off the Twitter API but I'd rather just load all the data at once rather than have to remotely access the API every time I want to look up a definition. Thanks

  • What is the best API in any language for Audio and MIDI music application development?

    - by noneme
    What, in your opinion, is the best API to utilize in developing an application that handles both realtime MIDI and audio input and output? This would be for an application that is used in the process of making music as opposed to playing audio or MIDI files. I'm aware that this may be a subjective question, but if you know of an API that is dominantly used for these purposes, please share it. I'm agnostic about which language the API is for, and I also don't care about portability. The real concern is for an API that is well documented, well designed (e.g. thought out and intuitive to developers using it), and actively maintained. OS portability would be nice, but it is second to having an API/Language that meets the previous requirements. Please note that the emphasis is not on API's for sound synthesis or for composing music with code. It is intended for the handling of sound file and MIDI data in a real-time context.

  • Google Maps API - Marker not showing

    - by popnbrown
    I'm trying to add markers for every single row from a table, that sits on the page. The page is http://www.sravanks.com/first/2013ftcmap.php This is the JS code that's loading the markers: $(document).ready(function() { var mapOptions = { center: new google.maps.LatLng(39.740, -89.503), zoom: 7 }; var map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById("map-canvas"), mapOptions); var infowindow = new google.maps.InfoWindow(); /* City Markers */ var cityCircle = new Array(); var i = 0; $.each($('.events tr'), function(index, value) { var name = $(this).find('td:first()').html(); var address = $(this).find('.address').html(); var linkUrl = "http://www.sravanks.com/first/geocode.php?address=" + address; $.ajax({ url: linkUrl }).done(function(data){ var json = $.parseJSON(data.substring(0, data.length-1)); lat = json.results[0].geometry.location.lat; lng = json.results[0].geometry.location.lng; var latlng = new google.maps.LatLng(lat, lng); var marker = new google.maps.Marker({ position: latlng, map: map, icon: 'map-pointer-medium.gif' }); google.maps.event.addListener(marker, 'click', function() { infowindow.setContent(name); infowindow.open(map, marker); cityCircle[i] = new google.maps.Circle({strokeColor: '#00FF00', strokeOpacity: 0.8, strokeWeight: 2, fillColor: '#00FF00', fillOpacity: 0.35, map: map, center: latlng, radius: 144841}); i++; }); }); }); /*Team Markers*/ var markers = {}; var teamName, teamNumber, lat, lng, content; $.each($('.list tr'), function(index, value) { teamName = $(this).find('td.name').html(); teamNumber = $(this).find('td.number').html(); markers[teamNumber] = {}; lat = parseFloat($(this).find('td.lat').html()); lng = parseFloat($(this).find('td.lng').html()); content = "Name: " + teamName + "<br />Number: " + teamNumber; markers[teamNumber]['latlng'] = new google.maps.LatLng(lat, lng); markers[teamNumber]['marker'] = new google.maps.Marker({ position: markers[teamNumber]['latlng'], map: map }); google.maps.event.addListener(markers[teamNumber]['marker'], 'click', function() { infowindow.setContent(content); infowindow.open(map, markers[teamNumber]['marker']); }); }); google.maps.event.addListener(infowindow, 'closeclick', function() { for(var i=0;i<cityCircle.length;i++){ cityCircle[i].setMap(null); } }); }); I've got no errors, but the Team Markers do not show up. The strange thing is that the City Markers do show up. Some more info, the City Markers ajax call is just to a proxy that calls the google geocoding api. Again the link's at http://www.sravanks.com/first/2013ftcmap.php

  • Google maps api v3 refreshing away markers

    - by Paul Peelen
    Hi, I am having problems with the google maps API V3. It seems that every time I load my page the maps load (including the markers) and then it does a quick reload and removes all the markers. Am I missing somehting? What am I doing wrong? Here is an example: http://www.PaulPeelen.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/SafariScreenSnapz001.mov this is my code: <script type="text/javascript"> <!-- var hash = "{{$sHashLocal}}"; var webroot = "{{$webroot}}"; var map; function initialize() { var latlng = new google.maps.LatLng(59.32045, 18.066902); var myOptions = { zoom: 13, center: latlng, mapTypeId: google.maps.MapTypeId.ROADMAP }; map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById("map_canvas"), myOptions); return map; } function getMarkerInfo (infowindow, rack_id) { // Get all the racks $.ajax({ type: "GET", url: webroot+"ajax/getRack/"+hash+"/"+rack_id, cache: false, dataType: "html", success: function(html) { $("#rack_"+rack_id).html(); infowindow.setContent(html); } }); } $(document).ready(function () { map = initialize(); function attachSecretMessage(marker, rack_id) { var infowindow = new google.maps.InfoWindow({ size: new google.maps.Size(50,50) }); google.maps.event.addListener(marker, 'click', function(){ var ret = '<div id="rack_'+rack_id+'" class="rackDiv"><div class="rackDivLoading"><img src="theme/images/loader-small.gif" border="0"/><span>Hämtar data</span></div></div>'; infowindow.setContent(ret); infowindow.open(map,marker); getMarkerInfo(infowindow,rack_id); }); } function addPlacemark (lat,lng,title, rack_id) { var image = new google.maps.MarkerImage('http://www.google.com/intl/en_us/mapfiles/ms/micons/blue-dot.png', new google.maps.Size(32, 32), new google.maps.Point(0,0), new google.maps.Point(0, 32)); var shadow = new google.maps.MarkerImage('http://maps.google.com/mapfiles/shadow50.png', new google.maps.Size(37, 34), new google.maps.Point(0,0), new google.maps.Point(-4, 34)); var location = new google.maps.LatLng(lat,lng); var marker = new google.maps.Marker({ position: location, map: map, icon: image, shadow: shadow}); marker.setTitle(title); attachSecretMessage(marker, rack_id); } // Get all the racks $.ajax({ type: "GET", url: webroot+"ajax/getRacks/"+hash, cache: false, dataType: "xml", success: function(xml) { // Add the results $(xml).find("station").each(function () { rack_id = $(this).find("rack_id").text(); title = $(this).find("description").text(); longitute = parseFloat($(this).find("longitute").text()); latitude = parseFloat($(this).find("latitude").text()); addPlacemark(latitude, longitute, title, rack_id); }); } }); $("#addMark").click(function () { addPlacemark (59.32045, 18.066902); }); // Set size setPageSize(); }); //--> </script> I hope somebody can help me. Best regards, Paul Peelen

  • Setting value for autocomplete search field linked to Google Places API

    - by user1653350
    I have a web page where people will be able to enter multiple destinations. When they state they want to enter a new destination, the current field values are stored in arrays. If they choose to go back to a previous destination, the relevant values are reinserted into the form fields. I am using the search field linked to autocomplete as the visible display of the destination. When I attempt to put a value into the linked search field, the value is presented as if it is a placeholder instead of a value. Enter the field and the value is removed by the onFocus() event of the Google Places autocomplete add-in. How can I reinsert the value and have it recognised as a value instead of placeholder. field definition in the form <label for="GoogleDestSrch" class="inputText">Destination: <span id="DestinationDisplay2">1</span> <span class="required"><font size="5"> * </font></span></label> <input id="GoogleDestSrch" type="text" size="50" placeholder="Please enter your destination" /> initialise code for Google Places API listener var input = document.getElementById('GoogleDestSrch'); var autocomplete = new google.maps.places.Autocomplete(input); google.maps.event.addListener(autocomplete, 'place_changed', function() { fillInAddress(); }); attempting to reinsert value into search field when prior destination reloaded form.GoogleDestSrch.value = GoogleDestSrch[index]; Issue With Google Places <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"> function GotoDestination(index) { var domove = true; if (index == 0) { index = lastIndex + 1; } else { if (index == -1) { index = lastIndex - 1; if (index == 0) { index = 1; domove = false; } } } if (domove) { if (index != lastIndex) { var doc = window.document; var pdbutton = doc.getElementById("pdbutton"); var pdbutton1 = doc.getElementById("pdbutton1"); if ((index > lastIndex)) { // move to next destination saveDataF(lastIndex); loadDataF(index); lastIndex = index; } else if (index <= lastIndex) { // move to previous destination saveDataF(lastIndex); loadDataF(index); lastIndex = index; } } } } var input; var autocomplete; // fill in the Google metadata when a destination is selected function fillInAddress() { var strFullValue = ''; var strFullGeoValue = ''; var place = autocomplete.getPlace(); document.getElementById("GoogleType").value = place.types[0]; } function saveDataF(index) { var fieldValue; var blankSearch = "Please enter"; // placeholder text for Google Places fieldValue = document.getElementById("GoogleDestSrch").value; if (fieldValue.indexOf(blankSearch) > -1) { fieldValue = ""; } GoogleDestSrch[index] = fieldValue; } function loadDataF(index) { if ((GoogleDestSrch[index] + "") == "undefined") { document.getElementById("GoogleDestSrch").value = ""; } else { document.getElementById("GoogleDestSrch").value = GoogleDestSrch[index]; } } // -- Destination: 1 * Type of place // input = document.getElementById('GoogleDestSrch'); autocomplete = new google.maps.places.Autocomplete(input); google.maps.event.addListener(autocomplete, 'place_changed', function () { fillInAddress(); }); //]]

  • Youtube API upload - Incomplete Multipart body error

    - by Blerim J
    Hello, I'm trying to upload videos in Youtube through HttpWebRequest. Everything seems to be fine when uploading following the example given in API documentation. I see that request is being formed correctly, with content and token sent but I receive "Incomplete multipart body" as response. Thanks Blerim public bool YouTubeUpload() { string newLine = "\r\n"; //token and url are retrieved from YouTube at runtime. string token = string.Empty; string url = string.Empty; // construct the command url url = url + "?nexturl=http://www.mywebsite.com/"; // get a unique string to use for the data boundary string boundary = Guid.NewGuid().ToString().Replace("-", string.Empty); foreach (string file in Request.Files) { HttpPostedFileBase hpf = Request.Files[file] as HttpPostedFileBase; if (hpf.ContentLength == 0) continue; // get info about the file and open it for reading Stream fs = hpf.InputStream; HttpWebRequest webRequest = (HttpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(url); webRequest.ContentType = "multipart/form-data; boundary=" + boundary; webRequest.Method = "POST"; webRequest.KeepAlive = true; webRequest.Credentials = System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials; MemoryStream memoryStream = new MemoryStream(); StreamWriter writer = new StreamWriter(memoryStream); //token writer.Write("--" + boundary + newLine); writer.Write("Content-Disposition: form-data; name=\"{0}\"{1}{2}", "token", newLine, newLine); writer.Write(token); writer.Write(newLine); //Video writer.Write("--" + boundary + newLine); writer.Write("Content-Disposition: form-data; name=\"{0}\"; filename=\"{1}\"{2}", "File1", hpf.FileName, newLine); writer.Write("Content-Type: {0}" + newLine + newLine, hpf.ContentType); writer.Flush(); byte[] boundarybytes = System.Text.Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes(string.Format("--{0}--{1}", boundary, newLine)); webRequest.ContentLength = memoryStream.Length + fs.Length + boundarybytes.Length; Stream webStream = webRequest.GetRequestStream(); // write the form data to the web stream memoryStream.Position = 0; byte[] tempBuffer = new byte[memoryStream.Length]; memoryStream.Read(tempBuffer, 0, tempBuffer.Length); memoryStream.Close(); webStream.Write(tempBuffer, 0, tempBuffer.Length); // write the file to the stream int size; byte[] buf = new byte[1024 * 10]; do { size = fs.Read(buf, 0, buf.Length); if (size > 0) webStream.Write(buf, 0, size); } while (size > 0); // write the trailer to the stream webStream.Write(boundarybytes, 0, boundarybytes.Length); webStream.Close(); fs.Close(); //fails here.   • Amazon Product API: "Your request is missing a required parameter combination" on Blended ItemSearch

    - by Daniel Schaffer
    I'm having some problems trying to do an ItemSearch on the Blended index using the Amazon Product API. According to the documentation, Blended requests cannot specify the MerchantId parameter - and indeed, if I try to include it I get an error telling me so. However, when I don't include it, I get an error telling me that my request is missing a required parameter combination and that a valid combination includes MerchantId... what the hell? Here's the XML response: <Items xmlns="http://webservices.amazon.com/AWSECommerceService/2005-10-05"> <Request> <IsValid>False</IsValid> <ItemSearchRequest> <Availability>Available</Availability> <Condition>All</Condition> <Keywords> home theater pc and other geekery</Keywords> <ResponseGroup>Similarities</ResponseGroup> <ResponseGroup>SalesRank</ResponseGroup> <ResponseGroup>OfferSummary</ResponseGroup> <ResponseGroup>Small</ResponseGroup> <ResponseGroup>Images</ResponseGroup> <SearchIndex>Blended</SearchIndex> </ItemSearchRequest> <Errors> <Error> <Code>AWS.MissingParameterCombination</Code> <Message>Your request is missing a required parameter combination. Required parameter combinations include MerchantId, Availability.</Message> </Error> </Errors> </Request> </Items> The failing requests are being sent as part of batches with other requests that are succeeding. I'm using REST to send my requests, so here's an example of a request: http://ecs.amazonaws.com/onca/xml?AWSAccessKeyId=-------------& ItemSearch.1.Keywords=Mates%20of%20State& ItemSearch.1.MerchantId=Amazon& ItemSearch.1.SearchIndex=DVD& ItemSearch.2.Keywords=teaching%20Lily%20various%20computer%20related%20skills& ItemSearch.2.SearchIndex=Blended& ItemSearch.Shared.Availability=Available& ItemSearch.Shared.Condition=All& ItemSearch.Shared.ResponseGroup=Small%2CSalesRank%2CImages%2COfferSummary%2CSimilarities& Operation=ItemSearch%2CSimilarityLookup& Service=AWSECommerceService& SimilarityLookup.1.ItemId=B000FNNHZ2& SimilarityLookup.2.ItemId=B000EQ5UPU& SimilarityLookup.Shared.Availability=Available& SimilarityLookup.Shared.Condition=All& SimilarityLookup.Shared.MerchantId=Amazon& SimilarityLookup.Shared.ResponseGroup=Small%2CSalesRank%2CImages%2COfferSummary& Timestamp=2010-04-02T17%3A18%3A05Z& Signature=---------------- Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

  • JMSContext, @JMSDestinationDefintion, DefaultJMSConnectionFactory with simplified JMS API: TOTD #213

    - by arungupta
    "What's New in JMS 2.0" Part 1 and Part 2 provide comprehensive introduction to new messaging features introduced in JMS 2.0. The biggest improvement in JMS 2.0 is introduction of the "new simplified API". This was explained in the Java EE 7 Launch Technical Keynote. You can watch a complete replay here. Sending and Receiving a JMS message using JMS 1.1 requires lot of boilerplate code, primarily because the API was designed 10+ years ago. Here is a code that shows how to send a message using JMS 1.1 API: @Statelesspublic class ClassicMessageSender { @Resource(lookup = "java:comp/DefaultJMSConnectionFactory") ConnectionFactory connectionFactory; @Resource(mappedName = "java:global/jms/myQueue") Queue demoQueue; public void sendMessage(String payload) { Connection connection = null; try { connection = connectionFactory.createConnection(); connection.start(); Session session = connection.createSession(false, Session.AUTO_ACKNOWLEDGE); MessageProducer messageProducer = session.createProducer(demoQueue); TextMessage textMessage = session.createTextMessage(payload); messageProducer.send(textMessage); } catch (JMSException ex) { ex.printStackTrace(); } finally { if (connection != null) { try { connection.close(); } catch (JMSException ex) { ex.printStackTrace(); } } } }} There are several issues with this code: A JMS ConnectionFactory needs to be created in a application server-specific way before this application can run. Application-specific destination needs to be created in an application server-specific way before this application can run. Several intermediate objects need to be created to honor the JMS 1.1 API, e.g. ConnectionFactory -> Connection -> Session -> MessageProducer -> TextMessage. Everything is a checked exception and so try/catch block must be specified. Connection need to be explicitly started and closed, and that bloats even the finally block. The new JMS 2.0 simplified API code looks like: @Statelesspublic class SimplifiedMessageSender { @Inject JMSContext context; @Resource(mappedName="java:global/jms/myQueue") Queue myQueue; public void sendMessage(String message) { context.createProducer().send(myQueue, message); }} The code is significantly improved from the previous version in the following ways: The JMSContext interface combines in a single object the functionality of both the Connection and the Session in the earlier JMS APIs.  You can obtain a JMSContext object by simply injecting it with the @Inject annotation.  No need to explicitly specify a ConnectionFactory. A default ConnectionFactory under the JNDI name of java:comp/DefaultJMSConnectionFactory is used if no explicit ConnectionFactory is specified. The destination can be easily created using newly introduced @JMSDestinationDefinition as: @JMSDestinationDefinition(name = "java:global/jms/myQueue",        interfaceName = "javax.jms.Queue") It can be specified on any Java EE component and the destination is created during deployment. JMSContext, Session, Connection, JMSProducer and JMSConsumer objects are now AutoCloseable. This means that these resources are automatically closed when they go out of scope. This also obviates the need to explicitly start the connection JMSException is now a runtime exception. Method chaining on JMSProducers allows to use builder patterns. No need to create separate Message object, you can specify the message body as an argument to the send() method instead. Want to try this code ? Download source code! Download Java EE 7 SDK and install. Start GlassFish: bin/asadmin start-domain Build the WAR (in the unzipped source code directory): mvn package Deploy the WAR: bin/asadmin deploy <source-code>/jms/target/jms-1.0-SNAPSHOT.war And access the application at http://localhost:8080/jms-1.0-SNAPSHOT/index.jsp to send and receive a message using classic and simplified API. A replay of JMS 2.0 session from Java EE 7 Launch Webinar provides complete details on what's new in this specification: Enjoy!

  • Application Development: Python or Java (or PHP)

    - by luckysmack
    I'm looking to get into application development, such as Facebook or Android apps and games. I am doing this for fun and to learn. Once my skills are to par I would like to have some side income from the apps, but I'm not banking on living off that (just so you know where I'm coming from and know what my end goals are). Currently I know and am familiar with PHP and frameworks such as cakephp and yii. However, I have been wanting to learn another language to broaden my horizons and to become a better developer. So I have narrowed it down to 2 languages. Python, and Java (I can already hear people cringing at the difference in the languages I have chosen, but I have some reasons). Python: closer to PHP that Java. Cross platformability. Also great as a general scripting language and has many file system level benefits that PHP does not. Cleaner syntax, readability, blah blah and the list goed on. Python will work great for cross platform apps and can be run on many OS's and is supported by Facebook for app development. But there is no support on Android (for full fledged apps). Java: a much stronger typed language, very robust community and corporate backing. Knowing Java is also good for personal marketability for enterprises, if you're into that. The main benefit here is that Java can write apps natively for Android and the apps can be ported for web versions to play on Facebook. So while I have seen many developers prefer Java over the two, Java has this significant advantage, where I can market my apps in both markets and in the future build more potential income. But like I said it is for fun. While money isn't the goal, it would still be nice. PHP: I'm putting this here because I know it already, and I'm sure a case could be made for it. It obviously works great for Facebook but like Python does not do so well on android. While it's mostly the realm of 'application development' that appeals to me, I do find Android apps fairly interesting and something that has a ton of potential to. But then again Facebook has a ton more users and the apps can also potentially be more immersive (desktop vs. mobile). So this is why I'm kinda stuck on what route to choose. Python for Facebook and web apps, with likely faster development to production times, or Java which can be developed for any of the platforms to make apps. Side note: I'm not really trying to get into 3D development, mostly 2D. And I also want to make an app with real-time play (websockets, etc). Someone mentioned node, js to me for that but Python seems to be more globally versatile for my goals. So, to anyone that does Facebook or Android development in either language: what do you suggest? Any input is valuable and I do appreciate it. And sorry for being long winded. EDIT: as mentioned in one of the answers, my primary goal is gaming. Although I do have some plans for non gaming apps such as general web based and desktop based ones. But gaming is my main goal with the possibility of income. EDIT: Another consideration could be Jython. Writing Python code which is converted into Java bytecode. This would allow the ability to do Android apps using Python. I could be wrong though, I'm still looking into it. Update 1-26-11: I recently acquired a new job which required I learn .NET using C#. Im sure some of you are cringing already but I really like the whole system and how it all works together between desktop and web development. But, as I am still interested in Python very much, and after some research I have decided I will learn Python as well as the IronPython implementation for .NET. But (again: I know...) since .NET is mostly a Windows thing and not as cross-compatible as I like, I will be learning Mono which is a cross platform implementation of .NET where I can use what I learn at work using C# and what I want to learn, Python/IronPython. So while learning and writing C#/.NET @ work I will be learning Python - Mono - Iron Python for what I want to do personally. And the benefit of them all being very closely related will help me out a lot, I think. What do you guys think? I almost feel like that should be another question, but there's not much of a question. Either way, you guys gave very helpful input.

  • Android: restful API service

    - by Martyn
    Hey, I'm looking to make a service which I can use to make calls to a web based rest api. I've spent a couple of days looking through stackoverflow.com, reading books and looking at articles whilst playing about with some code and I can't get anything which I'm happy with. Basically I want to start a service on app init then I want to be able to ask that service to request a url and return the results. In the meantime I want to be able to display a progress window or something similar. I've created a service currently which uses IDL, I've read somewhere that you only really need this for cross app communication, so think these needs stripping out but unsure how to do callbacks without it. Also when I hit the post(Config.getURL("login"), values) the app seems to pause for a while (seems weird - thought the idea behind a service was that it runs on a different thread!) Currently I have a service with post and get http methods inside, a couple of AIDL files (for two way communication), a ServiceManager which deals with starting, stopping, binding etc to the service and I'm dynamically creating a Handler with specific code for the callbacks as needed. I don't want anyone to give me a complete code base to work on, but some pointers would be greatly appreciated; even if it's to say I'm doing it completely wrong. I'm pretty new to Android and Java dev so if there are any blindingly obvious mistakes here - please don't think I'm a rubbish developer, I'm just wet behind the ears and would appreciate being told exactly where I'm going wrong. Anyway, code in (mostly) full (really didn't want to put this much code here, but I don't know where I'm going wrong - apologies in advance): public class RestfulAPIService extends Service { final RemoteCallbackList<IRemoteServiceCallback> mCallbacks = new RemoteCallbackList<IRemoteServiceCallback>(); public void onStart(Intent intent, int startId) { super.onStart(intent, startId); } public IBinder onBind(Intent intent) { return binder; } public void onCreate() { super.onCreate(); } public void onDestroy() { super.onDestroy(); mCallbacks.kill(); } private final IRestfulService.Stub binder = new IRestfulService.Stub() { public void doLogin(String username, String password) { Message msg = new Message(); Bundle data = new Bundle(); HashMap<String, String> values = new HashMap<String, String>(); values.put("username", username); values.put("password", password); String result = post(Config.getURL("login"), values); data.putString("response", result); msg.setData(data); msg.what = Config.ACTION_LOGIN; mHandler.sendMessage(msg); } public void registerCallback(IRemoteServiceCallback cb) { if (cb != null) mCallbacks.register(cb); } }; private final Handler mHandler = new Handler() { public void handleMessage(Message msg) { // Broadcast to all clients the new value. final int N = mCallbacks.beginBroadcast(); for (int i = 0; i < N; i++) { try { switch (msg.what) { case Config.ACTION_LOGIN: mCallbacks.getBroadcastItem(i).userLogIn( msg.getData().getString("response")); break; default: super.handleMessage(msg); return; } } catch (RemoteException e) { } } mCallbacks.finishBroadcast(); } public String post(String url, HashMap<String, String> namePairs) {...} public String get(String url) {...} }; A couple of AIDL files: package com.something.android oneway interface IRemoteServiceCallback { void userLogIn(String result); } and package com.something.android import com.something.android.IRemoteServiceCallback; interface IRestfulService { void doLogin(in String username, in String password); void registerCallback(IRemoteServiceCallback cb); } and the service manager: public class ServiceManager { final RemoteCallbackList<IRemoteServiceCallback> mCallbacks = new RemoteCallbackList<IRemoteServiceCallback>(); public IRestfulService restfulService; private RestfulServiceConnection conn; private boolean started = false; private Context context; public ServiceManager(Context context) { this.context = context; } public void startService() { if (started) { Toast.makeText(context, "Service already started", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); } else { Intent i = new Intent(); i.setClassName("com.something.android", "com.something.android.RestfulAPIService"); context.startService(i); started = true; } } public void stopService() { if (!started) { Toast.makeText(context, "Service not yet started", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); } else { Intent i = new Intent(); i.setClassName("com.something.android", "com.something.android.RestfulAPIService"); context.stopService(i); started = false; } } public void bindService() { if (conn == null) { conn = new RestfulServiceConnection(); Intent i = new Intent(); i.setClassName("com.something.android", "com.something.android.RestfulAPIService"); context.bindService(i, conn, Context.BIND_AUTO_CREATE); } else { Toast.makeText(context, "Cannot bind - service already bound", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); • Is there an application or way to sync address book, Facebook, LinkedIn, Gmail contacts?

    - by denislexic
    I'm looking for a Mac application or an Web application to sync all my Facebook, LinkedIn, Gmail contacts and Mac OS X address book contacts in one place. At the same time, it would be great if it didn't create a bunch of duplicates. (PS: The default sync between gmail contacts and address book seems to only create duplicates and doesn't seem to really work well together). Does anyone have a solution?

  • Google Maps API v3 - Different markers/labels on different zoom levels

    - by krikara
    I was wondering if it is possible that Google has a feature to view different markers on different zoom levels. For example, on zoom level 1, I want one marker over China with the label saying "5". And as the user zooms in, lets say on zoom level 4, I want the previous marker and label to disappear. And I want to have 5 new markers/labels, each on a different city in China all saying "1". Thus China will say a number and all the cities in China will say numbers adding up to China's number. The key concept I am trying to figure out here is how to hide markers and labels based on zoom levels. A constraint for me is that I am living in China currently where google is censored, so a lot of online documents are censored for me, including many of google's documentations. Here is my code thus far <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <meta name="viewport" content="initial-scale=1.0, user-scalable=no" /> <title>TM China</title> <style type="text/css"> html, body, #map_canvas { margin: 0; And when I copy the source code directly to my computer and replace all the icons with markers, the markers still don't appear. I can't seem to figure how to make markers appear using the marker Manager. http://google-maps-utility-library-v3.googlecode.com/svn/tags/markermanager/1.0/examples/weather_map.html

  • ASP.NET Frameworks and Raw Throughput Performance

    - by Rick Strahl
    A few days ago I had a curious thought: With all these different technologies that the ASP.NET stack has to offer, what's the most efficient technology overall to return data for a server request? When I started this it was mere curiosity rather than a real practical need or result. Different tools are used for different problems and so performance differences are to be expected. But still I was curious to see how the various technologies performed relative to each just for raw throughput of the request getting to the endpoint and back out to the client with as little processing in the actual endpoint logic as possible (aka Hello World!). I want to clarify that this is merely an informal test for my own curiosity and I'm sharing the results and process here because I thought it was interesting. It's been a long while since I've done any sort of perf testing on ASP.NET, mainly because I've not had extremely heavy load requirements and because overall ASP.NET performs very well even for fairly high loads so that often it's not that critical to test load performance. This post is not meant to make a point  or even come to a conclusion which tech is better, but just to act as a reference to help understand some of the differences in perf and give a starting point to play around with this yourself. I've included the code for this simple project, so you can play with it and maybe add a few additional tests for different things if you like. Source Code on GitHub I looked at this data for these technologies: ASP.NET Web API ASP.NET MVC WebForms ASP.NET WebPages ASMX AJAX Services  (couldn't get AJAX/JSON to run on IIS8 ) WCF Rest Raw ASP.NET HttpHandlers It's quite a mixed bag, of course and the technologies target different types of development. What started out as mere curiosity turned into a bit of a head scratcher as the results were sometimes surprising. What I describe here is more to satisfy my curiosity more than anything and I thought it interesting enough to discuss on the blog :-) First test: Raw Throughput The first thing I did is test raw throughput for the various technologies. This is the least practical test of course since you're unlikely to ever create the equivalent of a 'Hello World' request in a real life application. The idea here is to measure how much time a 'NOP' request takes to return data to the client. So for this request I create the simplest Hello World request that I could come up for each tech. Http Handler The first is the lowest level approach which is an HTTP handler. public class Handler : IHttpHandler { public void ProcessRequest(HttpContext context) { context.Response.ContentType = "text/plain"; context.Response.Write("Hello World. Time is: " + DateTime.Now.ToString()); } public bool IsReusable { get { return true; } } } WebForms Next I added a couple of ASPX pages - one using CodeBehind and one using only a markup page. The CodeBehind page simple does this in CodeBehind without any markup in the ASPX page: public partial class HelloWorld_CodeBehind : System.Web.UI.Page { protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { Response.Write("Hello World. Time is: " + DateTime.Now.ToString() ); Response.End(); } } while the Markup page only contains some static output via an expression:<%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="false" CodeBehind="HelloWorld_Markup.aspx.cs" Inherits="AspNetFrameworksPerformance.HelloWorld_Markup" %> Hello World. Time is <%= DateTime.Now %> ASP.NET WebPages WebPages is the freestanding Razor implementation of ASP.NET. Here's the simple HelloWorld.cshtml page:Hello World @DateTime.Now WCF REST WCF REST was the token REST implementation for ASP.NET before WebAPI and the inbetween step from ASP.NET AJAX. I'd like to forget that this technology was ever considered for production use, but I'll include it here. Here's an OperationContract class: [ServiceContract(Namespace = "")] [AspNetCompatibilityRequirements(RequirementsMode = AspNetCompatibilityRequirementsMode.Allowed)] public class WcfService { [OperationContract] [WebGet] public Stream HelloWorld() { var data = Encoding.Unicode.GetBytes("Hello World" + DateTime.Now.ToString()); var ms = new MemoryStream(data); // Add your operation implementation here return ms; } } WCF REST can return arbitrary results by returning a Stream object and a content type. The code above turns the string result into a stream and returns that back to the client. ASP.NET AJAX (ASMX Services) I also wanted to test ASP.NET AJAX services because prior to WebAPI this is probably still the most widely used AJAX technology for the ASP.NET stack today. Unfortunately I was completely unable to get this running on my Windows 8 machine. Visual Studio 2012  removed adding of ASP.NET AJAX services, and when I tried to manually add the service and configure the script handler references it simply did not work - I always got a SOAP response for GET and POST operations. No matter what I tried I always ended up getting XML results even when explicitly adding the ScriptHandler. So, I didn't test this (but the code is there - you might be able to test this on a Windows 7 box). ASP.NET MVC Next up is probably the most popular ASP.NET technology at the moment: MVC. Here's the small controller: public class MvcPerformanceController : Controller { public ActionResult Index() { return View(); } public ActionResult HelloWorldCode() { return new ContentResult() { Content = "Hello World. Time is: " + DateTime.Now.ToString() }; } } ASP.NET WebAPI Next up is WebAPI which looks kind of similar to MVC. Except here I have to use a StringContent result to return the response: public class WebApiPerformanceController : ApiController { [HttpGet] public HttpResponseMessage HelloWorldCode() { return new HttpResponseMessage() { Content = new StringContent("Hello World. Time is: " + DateTime.Now.ToString(), Encoding.UTF8, "text/plain") }; } } Testing Take a minute to think about each of the technologies… and take a guess which you think is most efficient in raw throughput. The fastest should be pretty obvious, but the others - maybe not so much. The testing I did is pretty informal since it was mainly to satisfy my curiosity - here's how I did this: I used Apache Bench (ab.exe) from a full Apache HTTP installation to run and log the test results of hitting the server. ab.exe is a small executable that lets you hit a URL repeatedly and provides counter information about the number of requests, requests per second etc. ab.exe and the batch file are located in the \LoadTests folder of the project. An ab.exe command line  looks like this: ab.exe -n100000 -c20 http://localhost/aspnetperf/api/HelloWorld which hits the specified URL 100,000 times with a load factor of 20 concurrent requests. This results in output like this:   It's a great way to get a quick and dirty performance summary. Run it a few times to make sure there's not a large amount of varience. You might also want to do an IISRESET to clear the Web Server. Just make sure you do a short test run to warm up the server first - otherwise your first run is likely to be skewed downwards. ab.exe also allows you to specify headers and provide POST data and many other things if you want to get a little more fancy. Here all tests are GET requests to keep it simple. I ran each test: 100,000 iterations Load factor of 20 concurrent connections IISReset before starting A short warm up run for API and MVC to make sure startup cost is mitigated Here is the batch file I used for the test: IISRESET REM make sure you add REM C:\Program Files (x86)\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\bin REM to your path so ab.exe can be found REM Warm up ab.exe -n100 -c20 http://localhost/aspnetperf/MvcPerformance/HelloWorldJsonab.exe -n100 -c20 http://localhost/aspnetperf/api/HelloWorldJson ab.exe -n100 -c20 http://localhost/AspNetPerf/WcfService.svc/HelloWorld ab.exe -n100000 -c20 http://localhost/aspnetperf/handler.ashx > handler.txt ab.exe -n100000 -c20 http://localhost/aspnetperf/HelloWorld_CodeBehind.aspx > AspxCodeBehind.txt ab.exe -n100000 -c20 http://localhost/aspnetperf/HelloWorld_Markup.aspx > AspxMarkup.txt ab.exe -n100000 -c20 http://localhost/AspNetPerf/WcfService.svc/HelloWorld > Wcf.txt ab.exe -n100000 -c20 http://localhost/aspnetperf/MvcPerformance/HelloWorldCode > Mvc.txt ab.exe -n100000 -c20 http://localhost/aspnetperf/api/HelloWorld > WebApi.txt I ran each of these tests 3 times and took the average score for Requests/second, with the machine otherwise idle. I did see a bit of variance when running many tests but the values used here are the medians. Part of this has to do with the fact I ran the tests on my local machine - result would probably more consistent running the load test on a separate machine hitting across the network. I ran these tests locally on my laptop which is a Dell XPS with quad core Sandibridge I7-2720QM @ 2.20ghz and a fast SSD drive on Windows 8. CPU load during tests ran to about 70% max across all 4 cores (IOW, it wasn't overloading the machine). Ideally you can try running these tests on a separate machine hitting the local machine. If I remember correctly IIS 7 and 8 on client OSs don't throttle so the performance here should be Results Ok, let's cut straight to the chase. Below are the results from the tests… It's not surprising that the handler was fastest. But it was a bit surprising to me that the next fastest was WebForms and especially Web Forms with markup over a CodeBehind page. WebPages also fared fairly well. MVC and WebAPI are a little slower and the slowest by far is WCF REST (which again I find surprising). As mentioned at the start the raw throughput tests are not overly practical as they don't test scripting performance for the HTML generation engines or serialization performances of the data engines. All it really does is give you an idea of the raw throughput for the technology from time of request to reaching the endpoint and returning minimal text data back to the client which indicates full round trip performance. But it's still interesting to see that Web Forms performs better in throughput than either MVC, WebAPI or WebPages. It'd be interesting to try this with a few pages that actually have some parsing logic on it, but that's beyond the scope of this throughput test. But what's also amazing about this test is the sheer amount of traffic that a laptop computer is handling. Even the slowest tech managed 5700 requests a second, which is one hell of a lot of requests if you extrapolate that out over a 24 hour period. Remember these are not static pages, but dynamic requests that are being served. Another test - JSON Data Service Results The second test I used a JSON result from several of the technologies. I didn't bother running WebForms and WebPages through this test since that doesn't make a ton of sense to return data from the them (OTOH, returning text from the APIs didn't make a ton of sense either :-) In these tests I have a small Person class that gets serialized and then returned to the client. The Person class looks like this: public class Person { public Person() { Id = 10; Name = "Rick"; Entered = DateTime.Now; } public int Id { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public DateTime Entered { get; set; } } Here are the updated handler classes that use Person: Handler public class Handler : IHttpHandler { public void ProcessRequest(HttpContext context) { var action = context.Request.QueryString["action"]; if (action == "json") JsonRequest(context); else TextRequest(context); } public void TextRequest(HttpContext context) { context.Response.ContentType = "text/plain"; context.Response.Write("Hello World. Time is: " + DateTime.Now.ToString()); } public void JsonRequest(HttpContext context) { var json = JsonConvert.SerializeObject(new Person(), Formatting.None); context.Response.ContentType = "application/json"; context.Response.Write(json); } public bool IsReusable { get { return true; } } } This code adds a little logic to check for a action query string and route the request to an optional JSON result method. To generate JSON, I'm using the same JSON.NET serializer (JsonConvert.SerializeObject) used in Web API to create the JSON response. WCF REST   [ServiceContract(Namespace = "")] [AspNetCompatibilityRequirements(RequirementsMode = AspNetCompatibilityRequirementsMode.Allowed)] public class WcfService { [OperationContract] [WebGet] public Stream HelloWorld() { var data = Encoding.Unicode.GetBytes("Hello World " + DateTime.Now.ToString()); var ms = new MemoryStream(data); // Add your operation implementation here return ms; } [OperationContract] [WebGet(ResponseFormat=WebMessageFormat.Json,BodyStyle=WebMessageBodyStyle.WrappedRequest)] public Person HelloWorldJson() { // Add your operation implementation here return new Person(); } } For WCF REST all I have to do is add a method with the Person result type.   ASP.NET MVC public class MvcPerformanceController : Controller { // // GET: /MvcPerformance/ public ActionResult Index() { return View(); } public ActionResult HelloWorldCode() { return new ContentResult() { Content = "Hello World. Time is: " + DateTime.Now.ToString() }; } public JsonResult HelloWorldJson() { return Json(new Person(), JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet); } } For MVC all I have to do for a JSON response is return a JSON result. ASP.NET internally uses JavaScriptSerializer. ASP.NET WebAPI public class WebApiPerformanceController : ApiController { [HttpGet] public HttpResponseMessage HelloWorldCode() { return new HttpResponseMessage() { Content = new StringContent("Hello World. Time is: " + DateTime.Now.ToString(), Encoding.UTF8, "text/plain") }; } [HttpGet] public Person HelloWorldJson() { return new Person(); } [HttpGet] public HttpResponseMessage HelloWorldJson2() { var response = new HttpResponseMessage(HttpStatusCode.OK); response.Content = new ObjectContent<Person>(new Person(), GlobalConfiguration.Configuration.Formatters.JsonFormatter); return response; } } Testing and Results To run these data requests I used the following ab.exe commands:REM JSON RESPONSES ab.exe -n100000 -c20 http://localhost/aspnetperf/Handler.ashx?action=json > HandlerJson.txt ab.exe -n100000 -c20 http://localhost/aspnetperf/MvcPerformance/HelloWorldJson > MvcJson.txt ab.exe -n100000 -c20 http://localhost/aspnetperf/api/HelloWorldJson > WebApiJson.txt ab.exe -n100000 -c20 http://localhost/AspNetPerf/WcfService.svc/HelloWorldJson > WcfJson.txt The results from this test run are a bit interesting in that the WebAPI test improved performance significantly over returning plain string content. Here are the results:   The performance for each technology drops a little bit except for WebAPI which is up quite a bit! From this test it appears that WebAPI is actually significantly better performing returning a JSON response, rather than a plain string response. Snag with Apache Benchmark and 'Length Failures' I ran into a little snag with Apache Benchmark, which was reporting failures for my Web API requests when serializing. As the graph shows performance improved significantly from with JSON results from 5580 to 6530 or so which is a 15% improvement (while all others slowed down by 3-8%). However, I was skeptical at first because the WebAPI test reports showed a bunch of errors on about 10% of the requests. Check out this report: Notice the Failed Request count. What the hey? Is WebAPI failing on roughly 10% of requests when sending JSON? Turns out: No it's not! But it took some sleuthing to figure out why it reports these failures. At first I thought that Web API was failing, and so to make sure I re-ran the test with Fiddler attached and runiisning the ab.exe test by using the -X switch: ab.exe -n100 -c10 -X localhost:8888 http://localhost/aspnetperf/api/HelloWorldJson which showed that indeed all requests where returning proper HTTP 200 results with full content. However ab.exe was reporting the errors. After some closer inspection it turned out that the dates varying in size altered the response length in dynamic output. For example: these two results: {"Id":10,"Name":"Rick","Entered":"2012-09-04T10:57:24.841926-10:00"} {"Id":10,"Name":"Rick","Entered":"2012-09-04T10:57:24.8519262-10:00"} are different in length for the number which results in 68 and 69 bytes respectively. The same URL produces different result lengths which is what ab.exe reports. I didn't notice at first bit the same is happening when running the ASHX handler with JSON.NET result since it uses the same serializer that varies the milliseconds. Moral: You can typically ignore Length failures in Apache Benchmark and when in doubt check the actual output with Fiddler. Note that the other failure values are accurate though. Another interesting Side Note: Perf drops over Time As I was running these tests repeatedly I was finding that performance steadily dropped from a startup peak to a 10-15% lower stable level. IOW, with Web API I'd start out with around 6500 req/sec and in subsequent runs it keeps dropping until it would stabalize somewhere around 5900 req/sec occasionally jumping lower. For these tests this is why I did the IIS RESET and warm up for individual tests. This is a little puzzling. Looking at Process Monitor while the test are running memory very quickly levels out as do handles and threads, on the first test run. Subsequent runs everything stays stable, but the performance starts going downwards. This applies to all the technologies - Handlers, Web Forms, MVC, Web API - curious to see if others test this and see similar results. Doing an IISRESET then resets everything and performance starts off at peak again… Summary As I stated at the outset, these were informal to satiate my curiosity not to prove that any technology is better or even faster than another. While there clearly are differences in performance the differences (other than WCF REST which was by far the slowest and the raw handler which was by far the highest) are relatively minor, so there is no need to feel that any one technology is a runaway standout in raw performance. Choosing a technology is about more than pure performance but also about the adequateness for the job and the easy of implementation. The strengths of each technology will make for any minor performance difference we see in these tests. However, to me it's important to get an occasional reality check and compare where new technologies are heading. Often times old stuff that's been optimized and designed for a time of less horse power can utterly blow the doors off newer tech and simple checks like this let you compare. Luckily we're seeing that much of the new stuff performs well even in V1.0 which is great. To me it was very interesting to see Web API perform relatively badly with plain string content, which originally led me to think that Web API might not be properly optimized just yet. For those that caught my Tweets late last week regarding WebAPI's slow responses was with String content which is in fact considerably slower. Luckily where it counts with serialized JSON and XML WebAPI actually performs better. But I do wonder what would make generic string content slower than serialized code? This stresses another point: Don't take a single test as the final gospel and don't extrapolate out from a single set of tests. Certainly Twitter can make you feel like a fool when you post something immediate that hasn't been fleshed out a little more <blush>. Egg on my face. As a result I ended up screwing around with this for a few hours today to compare different scenarios. Well worth the time… I hope you found this useful, if not for the results, maybe for the process of quickly testing a few requests for performance and charting out a comparison. Now onwards with more serious stuff… Resources Source Code on GitHub Apache HTTP Server Project (ab.exe is part of the binary distribution)© Rick Strahl, West Wind Technologies, 2005-2012Posted in ASP.NET  Web Api   Tweet !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs"); (function() { var po = document.createElement('script'); po.type = 'text/javascript'; po.async = true; po.src = 'https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(po, s); })();
