  • Running a command or script in terminal from anywhere by adding it to the PATH, what am I doing wrong?

    On osx/linux I want to be able to run a command/script on the terminal from anywhere which links to a program. ie I want to be able to run: alloy that runs: /usr/local/share/npm/lib/node_modules/alloy/bin/alloy I'm guessing adding to .bashrc is the best way? I've tried running: export PATH="$PATH:/usr/local/share/npm/lib/node_modules/alloy/bin" and also: export PATH="$PATH:/usr/local/share/npm/lib/node_modules/alloy/bin/alloy" Then I started a new terminal window but the alloy command doesnt work. Am I missing something?

  • Schizophrenic Ubuntu 12.10-12.04: Atheros 922 PCI WIFI is disabled in Unity but enabled in terminal - How to getit to work?

    I am trying to get my PCI Wireless Atheros 922 card to work. It is disabled in Unity: both the network utility and the desktop (see screenshot http://www.amisdurailhalanzy.be/Screenshot%20from%202012-10-25%2013:19:54.png) I tried many different advises on many different forums. Installed 12.10 instead of 12.04, enabled all interfaces... etc. I have read about the aht9 driver... The terminal shows no hw or sw lock for the Atheros card, nevertheless, it is still disabled. Nothing worked so far, the card is still disabled. Any help is much appreciated.     When i installed ubuntu, everything was great. But one day, i heard the login sound but no sound on the desktop session. This happens every time. I have reinstalled sound drivers several times, checked speakers are not mute, checked alsamixer, saw all the troubleshooting tips on the net, checked user privileges too but of no help. anyone knows the answer? Please help!!!!! I have ubuntu 10.4LTS and alc662 sound chip. My computer is detecting the sound card and no problems with my speakers.This maybe a bug but i cannot report as i don't know if this will repeat(I atleast have to solve the problem first).

    I recently decided to start teaching myself C++ and thought a simple encryption project would be a good place to start, since it covers most of the basics (cout, cin, opening files, etc). Is there a way to have the code open a terminal window similar to the one opened when I compile and run from sublime text? I have tried this so far, but it hasn't changed anything. string cmd = "gnome-terminal-x sh-c 'ls-l; exec bash'"; system(cmd.c_str()); Essentially, I would like to be able to run the program by clicking the .exe, and have the terminal where all of the input and output goes pop up.

  • How can I deactivate the gnome desktop of my ubuntu server?

    I'm running a home server on my old laptop (atom cpu). I installed ubuntu 12.04 server edition, but I also installed ubuntu-desktop. So, when I turn it on, ubuntu desktop is shown. I sometimes use GUI, but I want to turn the ubuntu-desktop (gnome-desktop) off when I don't use it. I think I can save resources by turning off the GUI. It's necessary since my laptop's performance is not very good and it often becomes very hot. I guess I can run ubuntu-desktop on my terminal with "startx" command. But, I don't know how to turn the X window off for a moment. Anybody have an idea? Thanks in advance.

  • Open application in background without losing current window focus. Fedora 17, Gnome 3

    I'm running a script in the background which loads an image with feh depending on which application is currently in focus. However, whenever the script opens the image, window focus is lost to feh. I was able to circumvent this by using xdotool to switch back to the application that was originally in focus, but this introduces a short annoying period of time where the focus is switched from feh to the application. My question is this: is there any way to launch feh in the background such that window focus is NOT lost? System: Fedora 17, Gnome 3, Bash Thanks a ton!

  • Is there an intuitive way to reopen Empathy's contact list?

    Since a short while I'm using Ubuntu Oneiric Ocelot (11.10) with gnome-shell (Gnome 3) and I'm trying to get accustomed to the default Empathy Instant Messaging client. When I hit the close button of Empathy's contact list the window disappears as expected. When I now start Empathy over the Gnome Activities menu the contact list reappears. That's not as easy as clicking a system tray icon back in Psi on Gnome 2 but it works for now. But when I start a conversation first and have an open conversation window, then close the contact list, and try to regain access to it by using Gnome Activities, I only get the conversation window into focus and no contact list appears. I only seem to be able to get the contact list back if I close the conversation window (and thereby signal the conversations to be over) and then use Gnome Activities again to get my contact list back. That's horrible. Is this intended? Is there something I'm missing?

    I have installed 12.04 along with Windows 7 and also installed gnuplot 4.6.0. When I type gnuplot on the terminal, I am getting the error message: Terminal type set to unknown. When I tried plot sin(x), the graph does not appear on the screen. However, I am able to make a postscript file. I tried set terminal 'x11', system responds with: unknown or ambiguous terminal. Please help me solve this problem.

    I can't really show the code in Unix, but I can explain it very clearly. In the terminal, when you type "df", you get information on the disk free space all in KILOBYTE units. KILOBYTES is currently set as the default in Unix. My problem is trying to change the default from KILOBYTES to MEGABYTES.   • How to set PATH variable on Mac OS so that even non-terminal apps see it?

    I need to add a directory to my PATH variable on Mac OS. I added it in .bash_profile and .profile, and that works for the terminal. But Emacs (http://emacsformacosx.com) still does not use the new PATH variable. (I'm trying to run latex from emacs, but it's not finding the command in my /usr/local/bin, which I'm trying to add to the PATH ...) I even logged out and back in, but still no luck. Any suggestions?

    I am reading a nice article about upgrading php on mac os x mountain lion. At the Install part of the document the author says that the user must execute a multiple line configure command. What is the easiest way to do it, using mac os terminal? Thank you. PS : I have executed yesterday the configure command without the parameters. Can this action cause any problems with the re-execution of configure command (with parameters this time)?
