• Orbital equations, and power required to run them

  Due to a discussion on the SO IRC today, I'm curious about orbital mechanics, and The equations needed to solve orbital problems The computing power required to solve complex problems The question in particular is calculating when the Earth will plow into the Sun (or vice versa, depending on the frame of reference). I suspect that all the gravitational pulls within our solar system may need to be calculated, which makes me wonder what type of computer cluster is required, or can this be done on a single box? I don't have the experience to do a back of the napkin test here, but perhaps you do? Also, much thx to Gortok for the original inspiration (see comments).

• Get wrong PATH_INFO after rewriting in lighttpd

  In my lighttpd config file, I have a rewrite rule like this: $HTTP["host"] == "sub.example.com" { url.rewrite = ( "^/(.*)" => "/sub/$1" ) } So when a user visits http://sub.example.com, she's actually visiting http://example.com/sub. The problem is that the PATH_INFO seems wrong, URL: http://sub.example.com/extra PATH_INFO: expected: /extra what I get: /sub/extra Now whenever I call request.get_path(), it returns something like http://sub.example.com/sub/extra, which is not what I want. Of course, I can just override the get_path method of the request class, but I wonder if there is a simpler way like changing the lighttpd config?

• Can I make ungetc unblock a blocking fgetc call?

  I would like to stuff an 'A' character back into stdin using ungetc on receipt of SIGUSR1. Imagine that I have a good reason for doing this. When calling foo(), the blocking read in stdin is not interrupted by the ungetc call on receipt of the signal.   Well, recently i bought a software that submits RSS to various RSS directories. Some of the directories, when we visit manually through a internet browser, requires registrations to submit our feed (Most popular example of such directories is feedage dot com) What made me wonder is, the software don't ask any login details while submitting my feed to 'feedage'!!! Now, what i'd like to know is, how the software is able to submit my feed to feedage without loggin in ?? if i can get the procedure then i'm planning to code a php script that will do the work for me from my server using cron job

• Is it practical to learn and use Forth?

  When I was still a young developer, I started to focus on the many available programming languages. But in 1980 to 1990 there weren't many freely available compilers. So I started with several BASIC dialects for home computers, Pascal and C on my PC, I did an exam in COBOL and dabbled a bit in Assembly and a few other languages. And at one point I took a short look at Forth. That's over 20 years ago and I've learned a lot ever since. I know that Forth is still used these days. It's still a good programming language but since I focus mostly on Windows development, I just wonder if knowing Forth could be helpful for future projects of mine. So, would it be practical for an experienced developer to learn more about Forth?

• Simple neon optimization in Android

  In my Android application, I use a bunch of open source libraries such as libyuv, libvpx, libcrypto, libssl, etc. Some of them come with Android.mk. For others, I hand-crafted Android.mk. The code is built only for arm for now. Here is my Application.mk: APP_ABI := armeabi-v7a APP_OPTIM := release APP_STL := gnustl_static APP_CPPFLAGS := -frtti I am looking for way to generate binaries that are optimized for neon. Browsing the net, I found the following setting that someone is using in his Android.mk: LOCAL_CFLAGS += -mfloat-abi=softfp -mfpu=neon -march=armv7 I wonder if I simply put this setting in Application.mk, will it automatically get applied across all the libraries? A step before each library is built is the following: include $(CLEAR_VARS) Is it better to include LOCAL_CFLAGS directive after this line (instead of including it in Application.mk)? Finally, why doesn't ndk-build automatically optimize for neon when it sees armabi in Application.mk? Regards.

  Hello everybody, Membership/Role/Profile providers API appeared in early days of asp.net Nearly everytime I can't live with standard API & have to add some extra functionality (for sorting, retrieving e.t.c.). I also have to use different database structure often (with foreign key to some tables for example) or think about performance improvements. These considerations forced teams I took part in to build own providers but I can't stand to implement providers API (because we don't use 70% of standard functionality at least). Moreover, providers that were built for exact projects were rarely reused. I wonder if someone found swiss-knife early-days-API providers implementation that is usefull for any kind of project without refactoring... Or do you use your own implementations of early-days-API's Or may be you abandon standard architecture and use lightweight implementations ? Thank you in advance

• Cheap windows driver signing for 64 bit Windows 7

  I need to install the libusb-win32 driver on Windows 7 64 bit machines. This driver is open source so it is not digitally signed so I want to do this my self but I wonder if this can be done WITHOUT paying lot of money. Is it possible to use a certificate which is NOT signed by Verisign or GlobalSign? Maybe self-signed or by using StartSSL instead? And if yes, how do I do it? According to this howto I have to use a "cross-certificate" (And there are only six available on the Microsoft list and most of them are for CAs which are no longer active) I don't care if the user is confronted with a warning message. I can even accept if the user has to install a special CA certificate first. I only require that the driver runs without manually disabling the signature check on each windows startup.

• Mac OS X 10.5+ and POSIX

  Hello, I need to program an authentication module that has to work with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and at the same time needs to be POSIX-compliant. I read here: developer.apple.com/leopard/overview/osfoundations.html that since Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, Mac OS X is POSIX-compliant (to POSIX 1003.1), but working under MAC OS X 10.5 Leopard myself, I can't find any trace of my user name neither in /etc/passwd nor in its successor /etc/master.passwd, which is mentioned here: developer.apple.com/mac/library/DOCUMENTATION/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man5/passwd.5.html Instead it says in both files OpenDirectory Service is used, which should be OpenLDAP according to the OpenDirectoryService man-page. Is this still POSIX-compliant ? I guess not. I wonder how Mac OS X would handle my 100% POSIX-compliant code which depends on /etc/passwd ?   I've read about it from the php website (http://us3.php.net/manual/en/language.basic-syntax.phpmode.php) Using: echo "<html tag>" is slower and also annoying because you got to escape char like " with \" But what's about using $output = <<< EOF <html code> EOF; Then later on in the code I can use $output .= <<< EOF <some more html code> EOF; then when I want to print it: echo "$output"; I think it's a great idea, but really wonder what you PHP guru think about it.   Possible Duplicate: Allen Holub wrote “You should never use get/set functions”, is he correct? Is there a good, no, a very good reason, to go through all the trouble of using getters and setters for object-oriented languages? What's wrong with just using a direct reference to a property or method? Is there some kind of "semantical coverup" that people don't want to talk about in polite company? Was I just too tired and fell asleep when someone walked out and said "Thou Shalt Write Copious Amounts of Code to Obtain Getters and Setters"? Follow-up after a year: It seems to be a common occurrence with Java, less so with Python. I'm beginning to wonder if this is more of a cultural phenomena (related to the limitations of the language) rather than "sage advice". The -1 question score is complete for-the-lulz as far as I am concerned. It's interesting that there are specific questions that are downvoted, not because they are "bad questions", but rather, because they hit someone's raw nerve.

• Generating Source Info For Flex BitmapData.

  Instead of populating the BitmapData class from an IMAGE. I would like to (within Actionscript) GENERATE some new BitmapData by capturing the Bitmap representing say, a TextArea component on the stage. In other words, sort of take a "screen capture" or "screenshot" of one of the components, and convert that into an image. Am I silly to even wonder if such a thing is feasible? Can an Air/Flex app "look at itself" in this way? Can it turn a datagrid or a canvas or a textinput into the corresponding image AS IF via screen capture? Even a hint in the right direction would be appreciated, Thanks In Advance.

• Good workflow with emacs+swank+slime+clojure?

  I just wanted opinion on good workflow using the emacs environment with clojure+swank+slime. I often find myself doing very repetitive keycommands and wonder if there is an obvious better way. I include swank with lein and start my project using lein swank from shell. Then I connect with emacs and do the correct use commands so that I can start to use (run-tests ). Then I do some coding and then want to test. To run the test I need to change buffer in emacs to the swank-repl C-x o, then I need to go to the prompt M-, then repeat the command M-p, then enter, maybe with an exception, then back to the code buffer and continue all over again with all the emacs commands. I find it a bit repetitive. I guess the solution would be to start hack on emacs and maybe add a shortcut for doing this repetitive task, but I would love to hear some suggestions because I can't be the only one who find this tedious?

Now, I could get rid of this warning by adding a useless local := 0; at the top of the procedure, but I wonder if there might not be a better way to structure this to avoid the issue. Anyone have any ideas?

  Hello. Again i wonder how can i highlight selected item in my MainMenu form. Every time i select an item only the first item is highlighted (always the same). But when a MenuItem is clicked its highlighted untill the Menu reloads. I found "checked" property on MenuItem that would generaly work, but the first item remains highlighted. There is no other properties on menuItem such as background color or selected... Can some one please direct me to the right solution? thanx

• Why do open source projects cling on 0.x versions for too long?

  I see many open source projects insist on staying in 0.xxx version for a very long time despite that the product has been proven useful and very stable. Trac is one example. They even risked switching from 0.9 to 0.10 which might confuse a lot of users about which is more recent. I wonder if this is a cultural paradigm, an honor code in open source community or simply a strict interpretation of release cycle management? Would a person who releases first version as "1.0 beta" be banished from open source world, or more realistically appeal less number of contributors? For some projects it even looks like they will never switch to 1.0 ever but only approximating only half way each time, like Zeno's paradox.

• Express highest floating point quantity that is less than 1

  I was doing some rounding calculations and happened upon a question. How can I express the highest quantity less than 1 for a given floating point type? That is, how I write/represent value x such that x < 1, x + y >= 1 for any y > 0. In fractions this would be x = (q-1)/q where q is the precision of the type. For example, if you are counting in 1/999 increments then x = 998/999. For a given type (float, double, long double), how could one express the value x in code? I also wonder if such a value actually exists for all values of y. That is, as y's exponent gets smaller perhaps the relation doesn't hold anymore. So an answer with some range restriction on y is also acceptable. (The value of x I want still does exist, the relationship may just not properly express it.)

• Protocol buffer deserialization and a dynamically loaded DLL in Compact Framework

  I saw a question related to this on the full framework here. Since it seems to have stayed unresolved for quite a while and this is for the compact framework, I though it would be better to create a new question for it. I want to deserialize types for which I am loading assemblies dynamically (with Assembly.LoadFrom) and I am getting a "Unable to identify known-type for ProtoIncludeAttribute" error. In the related question I mentioned, it was hinted that hooking AppDomain.AssemblyResolve event would help solving the problem. It makes sense for the full framework, but that event is not available in the CF. I wonder if there is a way to do this with CF. The structures I am using look a lot like this and all the classes required for deserialization are loaded from the same Assembly. If the assembly is referenced instead of dynamically loaded it works fine, but fails if done dynamically.
