• GNOME 3.8 stutters / lags

  I recently installed Fedora 19 beta and noticed unusually laggy behaviour of GNOME Shell (3.8) on the Nouveau driver on a nVidia 9200GS (also with nVidia driver) So I thought this could be related to Fedora so I installed Ubuntu 13.04 which comes with GNOME 3.6. Everything was buttery smooth as it has always been, but once I upgraded GNOME to 3.8, I experience the same laggy performance on Ubuntu as well. I'm talking about the animations, such as the window overview in activities, openSUSE live image with 3.6 = smooth Ubuntu 13.04 live image with 3.6 = smooth Ubuntu 13.04 install with 3.6 = smooth Ubuntu 13.04 install with 3.8 = laggy Fedora live image with 3.8 = laggy Fedora install with 3.8 = laggy Does anyone have a clue what could be going on?

• Does it matter that the TTL is higher than I've been told?

  Ok, so the title isn't very descriptive, I know. Basically, I'm trying to configure Outlook.com to use my custom domain! I've followed the steps and made the account etc. and now I have the DNS settings to configure from Windows Live. I added the MX Entries and everything last night but Windows Live is still saying I need to prove my ownership of the domain. The only thing I can think of that I had to use a differrent TTL to the one provided because my web hoster will only allow a minimum of four hours, whereas Windows Live told me to configure the TTL as one hour. Would that stop anything? By the way, my web hoster is JustHost (Shared Hosting)

• setup test domain ready for site launch

  I'm about to launch a site on a live server, after developing it with xampp on localhost. I first want to test the site before i make it live. How do i setup this up so I have it in a subdomain (i.e. test.livesite.com)? Is it just set it up on the server and only add the cname dns setting? Or is there a better way? All i am trying to do is add my site to the server, so i can edit it and look at it before I set it as live.

• How an offline main domain can influence traffic on an active sub domain

  The website(s) design is for a company active in 3 different areas. As an example lets use the following structure: www.example.com [sub1.example.com] [sub2.example.com] [sub3.example.com] sub2.example.com and sub3.example.com are ready to go live but www.example.com really isn't and send a 503 http error code. I would like to know if this situation will affect the traffic and ranking of the subdomains ready to go live? Is it preferable to wait and go live with the main domain? Or there is nothing to "fear" and one doesn't affect the other? Thank you

  Perhaps this is a question better suited for linux.se but since I have servers on all environments I was wondering what your favorite LiveCD is. Wiki defines this, for those unfamiliar, as a CD or DVD containing a bootable computer operating system. Live CDs are unique in that they have the ability to run a complete, modern operating system on a computer lacking mutable secondary storage, such as a hard disk drive. Live USB flash drives are similar to live CDs, but often have the added functionality of automatically and transparently writing changes back to their bootable medium. I tend to stick with Knoppix, and today I have to register the machine on the network before I can get any of my utilities running via IP. Any suggestions?

• Can't get an IBM xSeries 345 server to load Windows Server 2003 using ServerGuide utility

  I have a client that has an IBM xSeries 345 eServer. Per the IBM support website, I have downloaded the ServerGuide Setup 7.4.17 installation ISO and burned a bootable CD. The CD boots fine and loads the utility. I walk through the following screens without any issue: Set the date and Time Detect the IBM ServeRAID card and install the latest firmware Clear the hard disks Set up the RAID array The next step is format the NOS partition. I select my partition size and the utility goes through the following steps: Creating NOS partition Formatting NOS partition (NTFS) Copying W32 files The copying W32 files takes about 10 minutes. I see the CD drive and disks working hard. When the copying is complete, I'm taken to a blank page just NOS Partitioning at the top. At the bottom of the screen are the familiar Back and Exit buttons. I see the place where the Next button should be, and if I click on it I can tell there is something there, but the space is empty. No button is displayed and clicking the empty spot doesn't ever take me to the next screen. I can't load the OS until I get past this part. I have already tried: Burning multiple copies and versions of the ServerGuide CD Letting the final screen just sit there over the weekend thinking it might advance after syncing the drives or something Has anybody else seen this?   I am writing a script that gets called when a user logs in and check if a certain folder exists or is a broken symlink. (This is on a Mac OS X system, but the question is purely bash). It is not elegant, and it is not working, but right now it looks like this: #!/bin/bash # Often users have a messed up cache folder -- one that was redirected # but now is just a broken symlink. If, at a shell, I type: cd ~george it takes me to the appropriate directory. If I type: HOME_DIR=~george echo $HOME_DIR It gives me: /a/path/to/georges_home However, if I try to use a variable, it does not work: USERNAME="george" cd ~$USERNAME -bash: cd: ~george: No such file or directory I've tried using quotes and backticks, but can't figure out how to make it expand properly. How do I make this work?

• Windows XP Installation problems

  I'm having trouble installing Windows XP on a computer... My friend gave me her old computer, it was riddled with viruses and ran extremely slow. I did my best to clean it out, and after a bit I discovered it had a boot sector virus. So I downloaded the Ultimate Boot CD (installed it on a flash drive), and ran Darik's nuke and boot to completely wipe the hard drive. I then tried to reinstall Windows XP from a USB drive... It doesn't work. The computer just stalls and never boots. The computers dvd drive doesn't work, so I borrowed a spare drive that another friend had, and tried to run a Windows XP cd. For a bit I got the stop 7B error, but now it just stalls like the USB drive does. Since then I've booted back into the Ultimate Boot CD, and ran partition magic. Repartitioned the Hard Drive, and copied the files on the Windows cd to the hard drive. I was wondering if there is any way I can make it run the setup.exe off the hard drive. I have the UBCD at my disposal, but have yet to come up with a way to do it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

• How to disable auto insert notification in Windows 7?

  Alright, here's the problem. My hard drive activity light on my custom built PC is blinking exactly once every second. Microsoft has this to say on the issue: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/138598 There has been discussion on this issue several months ago: Why does my hard drive LED light blink every second? The problem seems to stem from primarily Windows 7 polling the CD-ROM/DVD drive every second to see if something is inserted. The Windows 7 users in the thread that was linked in the superuser question, https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/fi-FI/w7itprohardware/thread/4f6f63b3-4b58-4154-9298-1566100f9d00, have confirmed that this IS a known issue with Windows 7. Some people point at the motherboard circuitry causing the CD-ROM and SATA activity to both be linked to that hard drive activity, but whatever the case, the temporary solution seems to be to disable the CD/DVD-ROM drive in Device Manager. In fact, disabling the CD/DVD-ROM does stop the blinking, but of course this solution is counterproductive, because I shouldn't have to entirely disable a device to fix this problem. I've done the following suggestions in that thread: Change the autorun registry entry to 0 Completely disable autoplay in the autoplay control panel Disable autoplay in the Local Group Policy Editor. None of these stop the blinking from happening - apparently these solutions work for both XP and Vista, but it seems to be different in Windows 7. So I'm wondering if anyone has found out how to completely disable the polling in Windows 7, or if this will just have to be an issue we will have to deal with. There's no option to disable the auto insert notification when you go to the device within device manager (there was in XP), so I got no idea where this option is hidden, or if there's a registry key entry I could change to stop the polling. Anyone have any idea?

• Burn bootable iso image to USB stick using dd: Won't boot (despite USB first in boot sequence)

  I have installed Ubuntu on a Lenovo Thinkpad R500 2732, and I must update the BIOS. On the Lenovo website, I am offered this: BIOS Update Bootable CD for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bit), XP - ThinkPad R500 I guess a bootable CD that would do a BIOS update is indeed what I need. (still wondering why it says "Windows" though... if it is bootable should not it be OS-agnostic?) Not wanting to waste a CD, I copied the image to my USB stick: sudo dd if=/home/nico/7yuj40uc.iso of=/dev/sdb1 bs=1M And rebooted, after making sure USB is first in the boot sequence. PROBLEM: It does not boot. Did I forget one step? Details about the iso image (readme): ls -lh 7yuj40uc.iso 25M file 7yuj40uc.iso /home/nico/7yuj40uc.iso: # ISO 9660 CD-ROM filesystem data '7YUJ40US ' (bootable) (Scroll to the right: it says "bootable") UNetbootin does not work because it is not a Linux image. Some people on the Internet advise to copy the content of the ISO and do other steps. This ISO has zero ISO content so it would not work. If I mount the ISO, I can see it contains zero files.

• Unable to write DVD-R(Blank DVD's)

  I have a problem in dvd drive i.e. It can read CD/DVD and can write CD and all CD/DVD-RW but cannot write DVD DVD drive model is SH-S203B Samsung; I also have a log file created by nero burning rom 11. Actually the fact is no Blank DVD's are being read in my dvd drive only previously written dvd's can be read! Is this the problem of OS or should I try cleaning the dvd drive or my DVD drive is 4yrs old so is it going to spoil now, since it is showing this type of symptoms! • Non-alphanumeric character folder name auto-completion problems

  I have been working with Windows 7's command line and have some folders that begin with non-alphanumeric characters. When I try to use tab completion to complete the folder name, the initial character is not included inside of the quotation marks. Example: C:\Users\username\!example is the folder I want to get into, but when I type: cd ! and press <Tab> to autocomplete, it will complete to cd !"!example" instead of the expected cd "!example" Any ideas on how to fix this besides changing the folder names? EDIT: I realize I could just tab through the entire list after entering cd, but I'm looking for a way to speed up the process. I have been spending a significant amount of time navigating these folders. UPDATE: This also happens if there is a space in the directory. For example: "c:\Program Files". In order to continue using tab to complete, first the second quote has to be deleted. C:\Program press Tab "C:\Program Files" is what appears. To navigate to a subdirectory, first the quote after Program Files has to be deleted before the next directory can be spelled out.

• LG LW20 Express won't boot after hdd replace

  My old laptop (LG LW20 Express) got a hdd failure and I replaced the hdd. Now the laptop won't boot from cd or usb. I'm trying to install ubuntu on it. When I turn the laptop on it shows me the startup screen but when it should be the time to load operating system it just gives a black screen and starts over. This loop continues until I shut down the laptop. I created the usb boot drive following this guide https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick/ I used my boot cd to install ubuntu on this machine I'm using right now. So at least the cd should work. From the BIOS I can see that my newly installed hdd is recognized and put as a secondary master. Also the cd and removable media are in the boot list before hdd. The laptop runs pretty hot. The fan is at full speed pretty soon after the laptop is turned on. Earlier I suspected that it would have been the almost broken hdd that would have produced that heat but there obviously is something else also. Any ideas what to check?

Properly configured hostapd.conf Enabled packet forwarding & masquerading. • Dialog box tells me there's a missing driver when installing 64-bit version of Windows 7

  I'm trying to install Windows 7 64-bit on my computer (ASUS P6T Deluxe V2, one 80GB HDD and two 1 TB HDDs). When I'm supposed to select whether I want to Upgrade or do a Custom install, I get a dialog box telling me: Load Driver A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now. Note: If the Windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove it for this step. I've tried to reach this step using a 32-bit installation disc, but that doesn't generate this message at all. Through the command windows (shift-F10) I can reach all of my drives, including my optical drive, without any problems--so what kind of device driver is it the installation wants? I've tried all the obvious drivers on the CD that followed my motherboard, but I can't seem to find the right one. The problem is that I don't know what device I'm supposed to load the drivers for in the first place. Can anyone help me? Edit: It turned out that my downloaded image was corrupted. I borrowed a DVD from a friend of mine, which worked!

  i wrote a CD with an iso-image from debian.org. the debian-7.5.0-amd64-CD-1.iso from this folder. Debian Wheezy 7.5 stable 64bit There was an error at Select and install software step. It said Retrieving file 770 from 800 and then it failed the installation. I continued the instal and when i opened the computer it doesn't work the Ctrl + Alt + F7 as i waited. It starts at tty1 and after logging in i edited config file cause it had a lot of errors and said E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages or Couldn't found the package.   I need to recover data from quick-formatted DVD-R. Please advise a free of charge option (cheap commercial tools will be ok either). Disk was partially recorded with Windows built in disk recorder and recording most likely was not complete. Afterwards I have inserted partially recorded DVD again and on Windows recorder's message box 'How to use this disk?' selected - 'use for CD/DVD player' and data was completely lost - as new recording session was started. Files of photos were recorded on disk. What I have tried so far: DiskInternals CD-DVD recovery - sees 5 jpg files but can't show preview. Tool is commercial - trial version does not allow to recover files. CDCheck - doesn't see any files and reports errors at attempt to scand DVD CD Recovery Toolbox Free - does not even recognize DVD drive ISO Buster - recognizes two files - one MP3 file for 99% of recorded size and one ARC file for about 100 KB MiniTool Power Data Recovery - Free Edition - does not see any files on DVD Stellar Phoenix CD DVD Data Recovery - does not see any files BinaryBiz Virtual Lab - sees DVD disk but needs license to browse content Please advise how is it possible to recover files from DVD.

• zsh : How to list directory content with tab?

  I just switched from BASH to ZSH and thing are pretty good, but: when I start typing cd /usr/share/s and hit TAB, this is what I get : $ cd /usr/share/sane/ sane/ skype/ ssl-cert/ screen/ smplayer/ strigi/ seed-gtk3/ snmp/ synaptic/ sgml/ software-properties/ system-config-printer/ sgml-base/ soprano/ sysv-rc/ sgml-data/ sounds/ simple-scan/ splashy/ And this is ok. If I then hit TAB again, I get $ cd /usr/share/screen/, the next candidate, witch is also OK. (BTW, how do I cycle back to the previous candidate? Sorry, on to my question) Now what if I want to see the contents of /usr/share/screen/ now ? You now, BASH-style? The cursor is at the end of the line, will I have to ctrl-a (or home), then del del (to erase cd) then ls then ENTER? That seems like a lot of typing. (And it - possibly unnecessarily - enters the command in the history) Would not there be a key (maybe modifier-TAB? but the obvious candidates are already taken by the desktop... I digress) that would tell zsh to stop cycling through /usr/share/ and instead, just list the content /usr/share/screen/ ?

You will be able to lookup all the details including the validity dates, subject common name and the public key modulus.Capture an SSL connection using WiresharkAnd as you would have expected, looking at the low-level tcp data that has been exchanged between the client and server with a tcp-diagnostics tool (i.e. wireshark/tcpdump) you can also see the modulus in there.These were the settings I used to capture all traffic on the local loopback interface, matching the filter expression: tcp and ip and host 127.0.0.1 and port 443. This tells Wireshark to leave out any other information, I may not have been interested in showing you.
