• Ubuntu 12.04 - Unable to change brightness

  So, as a number of users seem to be experiencing, I am unable to change brightness on my laptop. Using the Brightness and Lock in settings, the slider moves but brightness does not adjust. The fn keys work for volume but not for brightness. I have updated my drivers and installed all updates, however the brightness is still at maximum. I have heard that opening sudo gedit /etc/x11/xorg.conf and entering Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1" can fix this, however when opening xorg.conf through Terminal I am greeted with a blank document... • Force ntfs volumes to be treated like any other by default

  I have a 20 GB NTFS volume that I was planning on using for a variety of purposes, including being readable by windows with little effort. Unfortunately, for some reason, I cannot execute any files on the drive, even after following the answer here (I was able to mount the volume just fine, but the error persists). How can I fix this? • How to manage permissions on a shared volume for OSX and ubuntu

  On my mac I'm using an unjournaled HFS partition to share files between OSX 10.8 and Ubuntu 12.04. It was a nice thought at first, because Time Machine will automatically backup the volume in OSX, but I soon noticed that OSX and Ubuntu mess with the permission in a way that makes things messy for me. So, in order to fully view and change files, I keep using chmod to apply permissions that which will allow me to fully use a document. But I don't understand why I have to keep applying changes over and over. Is possible to set some kind of permission permanently so that both operating systems will respect permanently? I guess 777 will work, but I thought that this is not a smart thing to do. But as long as 'others' does not get full access (third seven), I see a lock icon on the file in ubuntu.

  An alternative way to request read reciepts Sometime or other we use messaging namespaces like System.Net.Mail or System.Web.Mail to send emails from our applications. When we would need to include headers to request delivery or return reciepts (often called as Message Disposition Notifications) we lock ourselves to the limitation that not all email servers/email clients can satisfy this. We can enhance this border a little now, thanks to a new innovation I discovered from Gawab. It embeds a small invisible image of 1x1 dimension and the image source reads as recieptimg.php?id=2323425324. When this image is requested by the web browser or email client, the serverside handler does a smart mapping based on the ID to indicate that the message was read. We call them as 'Web Bugs'. But wait it is not a fool proof solution since spammers misuse this technique to confirm activeness of an email address and most of the email clients suppress inline images for security reasons. I just thought anyway would share this observation for the benefit of others.

• Can't adjust brightness on a Sony Vaio T13 ultrabook

  I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 alongside Windows 7 in a Vaio T13 ultrabook. I cannot use the the Fn+F4 or Fn+F5 to change the brightness. The bubble appears indicating that brightness is being changed but with no visual impact on the screen. I've tried many solutions involving the manipulation of the /etc/default/grub file but none of them worked. Whenever I tried this manipulation the screen still didn't change, however the bubble stopped functioning properly. This is not a problem of the Fn shortcut. Even when I try to change it in the Brightness and Lock on System Settings, the bar does scroll but the screen remains unchanged. Does any one has a way around this mystery?

• Purchase existing domain and transfer to new registrar

  I am purchasing an existing domain from the owner who has it registered with GoDaddy. I want to transfer the domain to another registrar and of course have it under my name. If they update the registrant info to my name then it will lock down for 60 days. That's no good. If they simply transfer it to my registrar, how will they update the registrant info? I know about escrow services, but I don't feel I need one because I trust the seller and the amount is (relatively) small. Advice? Thanks!

• NDepend Evaluation: Part 3

  NDepend is a Visual Studio add-in designed for intense code analysis with the goal of high code quality. NDepend uses a number of metrics and aggregates the data in pleasing static and active visual reports. My evaluation of NDepend will be broken up into several different parts. In the first part of the evaluation I looked at installing the add-in.  And in the last part I went over my first impressions including an overview of the features.  In this installment I provide a little more detail on a few of the features that I really like. Dependency Matrix The dependency matrix is one of the rich visual components provided with NDepend.  At a glance it lets you know where you have coupling problems including cycles.  It does this with number indicating the weight of the dependency and a color-coding that indicates the nature of the dependency. Green and blue cells are direct dependencies (with the difference being whether the relationship is from row-to-column or column-to-row).  Black cells are the ones that you really want to know about.  These indicate that you have a cycle.  That is, type A refers to type B and type B also refers to Type A. But, that’s not the end of the story.  A handy pop-up appears when you hover over the cell in question.  It explains the color, the dependency, and provides several interesting links that will teach you more than you want to know about the dependency. You can double-click the problem cells to explode the dependency.  That will show the dependencies on a method-by-method basis allowing you to more easily target and fix the problem.  When you’re done you can click the back button on the toolbar. Dependency Graph The dependency graph is another component provided.  It’s complementary to the dependency matrix, but it isn’t as easy to identify dependency issues using the window. On a positive note, it does provide more information than the matrix. My biggest issue with the dependency graph is determining what is shown.  This was not readily obvious.  I ended up using the navigation buttons to get an acceptable view.  I would have liked to choose what I see. Once you see the types you want you can get a decent idea of coupling strength based on the width of the dependency lines.  Double-arrowed lines are problematic and are shown in red.  The size of the boxes will be related to the metric being displayed.  This is controlled using the Box Size drop-down in the toolbar.  Personally, I don’t find the size of the box to be helpful, so I change it to Constant Font. One nice thing about the display is that you can see the entire path of dependencies when you hover over a type.  This is done by color-coding the dependencies and dependants.  It would be nice if selecting the box for the type would lock the highlighting in place. I did find a perhaps unintended work-around to the color-coding.  You can lock the color-coding in by hovering over the type, right-clicking, and then clicking on the canvas area to clear the pop-up menu.  You can then do whatever with it including saving it to an image file with the color-coding. CQL NDepend uses a code query language (CQL) to work with your code just like it was a database.  CQL cannot be confused with the robustness of T-SQL or even LINQ, but it represents an impressive attempt at providing an expressive way to enumerate and interrogate your code. There are two main windows you’ll use when working with CQL.  The CQL Query Explorer allows you to define what queries (rules) are run as part of a report – I immediately unselected rules that I don’t want in my results.  The CQL Query Edit window is where you can view or author your own rules.  The explorer window is pretty self-explanatory, so I won’t mention it further other than to say that any queries you author will appear in the custom group. Authoring your own queries is really hard to screw-up.  The Intellisense-like pop-ups tell you what you can do while making composition easy.  I was able to create a query within two minutes of playing with the editor.  My query warns if any types that are interfaces don’t start with an “I”. WARN IF Count > 0 IN SELECT TYPES WHERE IsInterface AND !NameLike “I” The results from the CQL Query Edit window are immediate. That fact makes it useful for ad hoc querying.  It’s worth mentioning two things that could make the experience smoother.  First, out of habit from using Visual Studio I expect to be able to scroll and press Tab to select an item in the list (like Intellisense).  You have to press Enter when you scroll to the item you want.  Second, the commands are case-sensitive.  I don’t see a really good reason to enforce that. CQL has a lot of potential not just in enforcing code quality, but also enforcing architectural constraints that your enterprise has defined. • Loss of privileges when enabeling auto log-in to encrypted home folder

  I use Ubuntu 11.10 with Gnome Shell and have an encrypted home folder. I enabled auto log-in through the system settings/users-admin menu, as I expected it didn't work (because of my encrypted home folder/user I suspect). But now I don't have privileges to mount my eksternal hard-drive, and I can no longer disable the auto log-in function, since the un-lock button in users-admin menu is grayed out. It seems like my users privileges has been degraded. Does any one have an solution to how I disable auto log-in and regain my privileges?

• In which object should I implement wait()/notify()?

  I'm working in an Android project with multithreading. Basically I have to wait to the server to respond before sending more data. The data sending task is delimited by the flag boolean hasServerResponded so the Thread will loop infinitely without doing anything until the flag becomes true. Since this boolean isn't declared as volatile (yet), and also looping without doing anything wastes resources, I thought maybe I should use AtomicBoolean and also implement wait() / notify() mechanism. Should I use the AtomicBoolean object notify() and wait() methods or should I create a lock Object?

• Proprietary AMD driver freezes my Ideapad

  I got this problem that I can't figure out what to do about. On Ideapad s205 with Ubuntu 12.04* (64), if I install Catalyst Centre 12.1 or newer it Freeze (lock's up), 1-3 times a day. It doesn't suffer freezing when using Radeon driver, but Radeon driver are considerably slower and flickers, so I would really prefer the proprietary driver (with no freezing). I reported the bug to launchpad but it doesn't get attention. -Also tried Ubuntu forums. Reported bug to AMD bug site "http://ati.cchtml.com/", but I don't think anybody reads it. Wrote AMD support several times, but get silly answers like "reinstall Windows". -Asked them to send the bug to Linux driver developers, but never heard a thing (more than once). The same nothing happens when writing to the feedback link from AMD driver download site. I'm so frustrated here, any advice would help. Thanks (*The same on Ubuntu 11.10)

• Mount an external drive at boot time only if it is plugged in.

  I've got an entry for an external harddrive in my fstab: UUID="680C0FE30C0FAAE0" /jgdata ntfs noatime,rw But sometimes this drive isn't plugged in at boot time. This leaves me half way through a boot, with a prompt to "Continue Waiting, press S or press M" but no keypress has any affect at this stage (including ctrl-alt-delete, not even caps-lock). Short of writing a script to check the output of fdisk -l, how can I mount this drive at boot time only if it is present? It would be handy to have an fdisk entry for this drive, so I can just type mount /jgdata instead of needing a device name.

• Change the brightness adjustment interval

  So whenever I hit my dim/brighten keys on the keyboard, a notification bubble pops up with the screen brightness. All that's fine, but I would like to be able to change how much the brightness changes with each key press. For example, right now it takes just 5 presses to go from the completely dark to the brightest setting. However, I know from the "Brightness/Lock" setting that the screen is capable of much smaller intervals than this. Is there a way to change how much the brightness jumps each time the keys are pressed?

• Symbol of VPNanytime is not shown anymore after upgrading from Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10

  Usually when I start VPN anytime (by calling a certain url in firefox) in Ubuntu 11.10 I saw a little "green symbol with a yellow lock in front of it" for the VPN anytime client near the clock. If I wanted to quit the VPN connection I just clicked on this symbol and hit logout/quit. Today I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10 and the VPN connection works here fine too. But the symbol near the clock is not shown anymore. Is this a bug or do I have to set this up manually? And is there a way to quit the client perhaps by terminal? Currently I just do a restart, when I want the vpn connection terminated and that's kind uncomfortable. :-) Thanks for any suggestions!

  I remember that in versions of ubuntu around 9.04 was possible to disable user to shutdown ( and maybe suspend too ) system if there was other user logged in.Something like policykit or similar. Is it possible to do in 11.04 ? Thanks edit: if someone needs ( for own risk ), little change in /usr/lib/pm-utils/bin/pm-action will allow user to suspend machine if he is only user logged in or when user will run sudo pm-suspend.
