• Which default Database Systems come installed in Microsoft VS2010 Express?

  Appreciate all advice 0n the following questions Which database systems (Ms SQL 2008, MS SQL Compact, or others) comes installed with VS2010 Express edition. SQL Server 2008 R2 Express is free, can we install and integrate with VS2010 Express? How to uninstall those database already come installed? I have installed VS2010 express on Windows 7; just VS2010 components (VB, C#, C++ and Web Developer) and without installing any other things like SQL Express. These are actually installed by installing VS2010 Express, but I have no idea how to use them or verify their valid existence from VS2010. Also, do I have to uninstall them before I install SQL Server 2008 R2, which is the latest version I believe? And what tool is needed to manage and create data source and tables?

• Mouse/Touchpad not working in Mac OS X Lion Pre-Boot Authentication (PBA) with File Vault 2

  I set up File Vault 2 in Mac OS X Lion with Pre-Boot Authentication (PBA). In PBA-login my USB-keyboard is working, while using a wrong keyboard layout. I can neither use my magic touchpad nor an USB-mouse in PBA. Thus I can't change the keyboard layout located in the upper right corner. I tried unplugging all USB-devices except keyboard and mouse. Nothing seems to help and the mouse cursor isn't moving. How can I get magic trackpad or USB-mouse to work in PBA login screen or manually set the used keyboard layout in PBA? Update: Still no (USB-)mouse or bluetooth trackpad support in File Vault 2 Login Screen. Today I talked to Apple Support for over one hour with no result. Every idea is appreciated.

• How do I use a URL path instead of a file path in an Open File dialog in Mac OSX or ChromiumOS?

  In Windows 7 (and perhaps earlier), the default "Open File" dialog box allows you to type a full URL into the "File name" section as if it were a file path, e.g. "http://www.example.com/pic.gif" instead of "C:/windows/pictures/pic.gif". When uploading a file to a website on the client side - say, an image - this allows the client to upload a picture located on a server accessible via the URL instead of downloading the image, saving it locally, then referencing the local image in the "Open File" dialog. It's a great option for Windows users. I have three separate questions: What is this procedure formally called? How do I describe this succinctly so that my searches for more information are fruitful? Can something similar be done in Mac OSX, Chromium OS, or a Linux environment? If so, how? Thanks!

  I've seen a lot of these cool info-diagram style voice-over videos like this one for Google Plus One: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAyUNI3_V2c&feature=player_embedded What types of tools are required to make something like that? Related to that, what programs are good for creating and editing screen casts on Mac? I am only familiar with Camtasia, maybe snapxpro (and Jing, which I think may only be for PC). I would mostly like to create a video like the one above, but if I could add in a few seconds of a screen-cast that would be nice.

  Can Mac OS X be setup to automatically configure its Airport interface with a static IP address when connected to a Wifi network with a certain name, and on all other Wifi networks use DHCP? Currently I'm using the "Locations" feature of the "Network" section in System Preferences to manually switch between two IP address setups. I have a "my static IP" setup, and a default "DHCP" setup. However this requires entering System Preferences to change the Location drop-down each time when switching locations. Can this be automated? Preferably this would be done without third-party software.

I've just followed this article (http://mac.tutsplus.com/tutorials/server/upgrading-the-native-php-installation-on-os-x-mountain-lion/) to update my php installation using HomeBrew. The latest php version is indeed installed in /usr/local/bin The problem is that my $PATH variable is the following (doing an echo $PATH reveals it) : /usr/local/mysql/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/opt/X11/bin ...so the old version of php (that comes with mountain lion) always run first Any ideas on how to solve this? • Do I have to reinstall Mac OS in case something goes wrong during a Windows Boot Camp install?

  I have a Macbook laptop running Snow Leopard, there's absolutely no information on the laptop, just a few unimportant files on it, I wanted to use Boot Camp Assistant (version 3) to create a partition and install Windows on it to run Windows alongside Mac OS. My CD/DVD drive doesn't work at all so I'm gonna have to mount Windows on a USB stick and install it from there. My question is, when I start Boot Camp it asks me to back up my files but I have nothing to back up, I was just wondering, in case I go through with the Windows install and something goes wrong do I have to reinstall Snow Leopard? My Snow Leopard install DVD can't be read by the laptop that's why I ask, I wouldn't know what to do if I had to reinstall it.

  I'd like to run a virtualized Ubuntu instance under Mac OS X (10.6). I've used VirtualBox in the past, but am looking for something that will be faster, and don't mind paying for either Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion. Does anyone have experience running Linux guests under either or both programs? I'm primarily interested in doing software development on the Linux guest installation, but I'm also very concerned with the performance and responsiveness the guest OS. I have a mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro (2.66 GHz i5, 8 GB of RAM, NVIDIDA GeForce GT 330M). Thanks!

• Find an old static IP address on a mac backup?

  I have an old backup of a mac via time machine, and I was wondering if there is some sort of accessible file that would have the static IP of the old computer it was backed up from. If you are curious, I am in IT and it is a PITA to get a new static IP here. I am just trying to use the old one to save some hassle. I've tried searching through the system log with no success (but I might be doing it wrong- grep with a regexp for an IP). Thanks!

• Blogging from Office RT

  During the last Build conference all attendees were given a brand new sparkling exciting Surface RT device (I love that machine despite its name but that's beside the point). On it came a version of Office 2013 RT, or better: the preview version. Now, I translated that term "Preview" to "Beta". Which is OK, since I've been using a lot of beta products from Microsoft and they all were great. And then I wanted to post a blogposting from Word. I knew I could, I have been doing this for a long time (I prefer Live Writer but that isn't available on Windows 8 RT). So I wrote the entry and hit "Publish". Instead of my blogsite I got a nice non-descriptive error telling me I couldn't post. So I fired up my other (Intel based) Win8 tablet, opened Word RT Preview, it loaded my blogpost (you've got to love the automatic synchronization through Skydrive) and tried from that machine. Same error. So, I installed Live Writer (remember, the other machine is Intel based) and posted from there. That worked like a charm. Apparently, there was something wrong with Word. I gave up and didn't think about it anymore. Yet… what you're reading now is written in Word 2013 RT on my Surface RT. So what did do? Simple: I updated from the Preview version to the final version. That's all there was to it. So…. If you're still on the preview I urge you to upgrade. You need to go to the "classic desktop update" window instead of going through the Windows Store App style update since Office is a desktop system, but once you do that you'll have the full version as well.   The recent Java Mac OS X 2012-006 update from Apple removes the Apple Java 6 plug-in from your Mac. The Mac OS X Install FAQ will be updated with the next 7u release, but you may find the following information useful in the meantime. Q: I have installed Java for OS X 2012-006 and Apple Java 6 can no longer be used for applets or Web Start. How do I get it back? A: The Java for OS X 2012-006 update from Apple uninstalls the Apple-provided Java applet plug-in from all web browsers. You can download the latest version of Java from Oracle, which has improved security, reliability and compatibility. If you prefer to continue using Apple's Java 6 plug-in, you can follow the steps provided in How to re-enable the Apple-provided Java SE 6 applet plug-in and Web Start functionality. Q: After installing Java for OS X 2012-006, can I continue to use Apple's Java 6 alongside the OS X JDK or JRE for Java 7? A: If you want to continue to develop with Java 6 in a Terminal window you can modify the startup script for your favorite command environment. For bash, use this: export JAVA_HOME=`/usr/libexec/java_home -v 1.6` Some applications use /usr/bin/java to invoke Java. After installing Java for OS X 2012-006, /usr/bin/java will find the newest JDK installed, and will use that for all of the Java related command line tools in /usr/bin. You may need to modify those applications to find Java 6, or contact the developer for a newer version of the application.   It’s trivial to break into a Mac using an OS X boot disk, but new Macs use a restore partition for OS installations. Here’s how you can use that partition to reset a user password and break into a Mac. All laptops that come with OS X 10.7 “Lion” or laptops that were upgraded to Lion have a restore partition for easy OS recovery. This easy-to-use recovery partition also opens up hackers to break into your Mac without needing any additional tools. To reset a user password on a Mac with Lion you first need to restart the computer and hold the Command+R (?+R) keys. When the gray Apple logo shows up on the screen you can release the keys. Your computer should automatically boot into the recovery partition. Start by selecting your language and then go to Utilities -> Terminal in the menu.   Hi there, I'm a C++ developer wrestling with updating an application that had made extensive use of the IStorage interface to open pre-Office 2007 documents from in-memory storage (via ILockBytes). If you are still following me so far, you probably know that the new Office Document formats are incompatible with IStorage containers. The application I'm trying to update, relied upon the IPersistStorage interface that all Office applications have, and the code as written calls the load method of IPersistStorage to read in a document from IStorage interface. • How to obtain specific Excel object library without the corresponding Office version installed.

  I am developing a Excel automation app that read and write to Excel spreadsheet. I have Office 2007 installed on my machine. I therefore can reference the Excel 12.0 Object Library and the Excel 5.0 Object Library. I don't want to use Excel 5.0 because it's really quite old and poorly documented. Therefore I'm referencing Excel 12.0. However the target machine have Office 2003 installed and therefore only have Excel 11.0. So when I compile my program it crashes on the target machine since the referenced library are different. I was wondering is there a way I could obtain the Excel 11.0 without installing Office 03? I tried to find answers from msdn and microsoft support page but couldn't find anything? This is quite strange since it could also happen in the future where developers has newer editions of Office than clients?

• Proper Install Order For Visual Studio 2010 with SQL Server 2008 and Office 2007?

  I want to create a Windows 7 64-bit (Ultimate) virtual machine with: Visual Studio 2010 (Ultimate) Office 2007 Enterprise (with Visio 2007) SQL Server 2008 (with SSIS and SSRS) but I am not sure if there is a correct order to install those items such that there will not be a loss of "awareness" of one application from another on that list? For example, I want to make sure Visual Studio knows that Office exists but also that Visual Studio knows that SQL Server exists but if I install SQL Server before Office will that wipe out any data access drivers that are needed by VS 2010 if Office is installed after SQL Server? There are a lot of components and I never gave it a thought that install order would matter but I have a feeling it does. Ultimately I want to create a VM that I can save and use a base development VM from which to create additional VMs from.
