• ListView adapter data change without ListView being notified

  I've written a ListActivity that has a custom list adapter. The list is being updated from a ContentProvider when onCreate is run. I also have a service that gets started when I run the app and it first updates the ContentProvider, then sends a Broadcast that the content has been updated. My ListActivity recieves the broadcast and tries to update my ListView. My problem is, I'm getting intermittent errors about the ListView adapter data changing without the ListView being notified. I call the notifyDataSetChanged() method on my list adapter right after I update it. What it seems like is happening is the list is still in the process of being updated after first call in onCreate when it recieves the broadcast from the service to update, so it tries to update my ListView before it's finished updating from it's first run. Does this make sense? Here is some of my code. • What programming language best bridges the gap between pseudocode and code?

  As I write code from now on, I plan to first lay out everything in beautiful, readable pseudocode and then implement the program around that structure. If I rank the languages that I currently know from easiest to most difficult to translate, I'd say: Lisp, Python, Lua, C++, Java, C I know that each language has its strength and weaknesses but I'm focusing specifically on pseudocode. What language do you use that is best suited for pseudocode-to-code? I always enjoy picking up new languages. Also, if you currently use this technique, I'd love to hear any tips you have about structuring practical pseudocode. Note: I feel this is subjective but has a clear answer per individual preference. I'm asking this here because the SO community has a very wide audience and is likely to suggest languages and techniques that I would otherwise not encounter.

  My company took some old php application over. Due to our preference to ASP.net and to the lack of any documentation from the previous developer, we do not want to spend much resources on developing in PHP. For implementing new features, we will create an Asp.net application that has the same look to the user. We want to develop a kind of 'coexisting' web application. Therefore we must share sessions between an PHP and an Asp.net webapplication project, because there is a usermanagement involved with an existing MySQL database. (e.g. link 'A' directs to the PHP website, and link 'B' directs to the asp.net application) How can we share the session between and PHP and an asp.net application? And does anyone have a hint for this 'coexisting' thing, that might be useful in development? Edit: IIS 6 would be our targeted server, altough IIS 7.5 would also be an option

• sending instant messages through python (msn)

  ok I am well aware there are many other questions about this, but I have been searching and have yet to find a solid proper answer that doesnt revolve around jabber or something worse. (no offense to jabber users, just I don't want all the extras that come with it) I currently have msnp and twisted.words, I simply want to send and receive messages, have read many examples that have failed to work, and msnp is poorly documented. My preference is msnp as it requires much less code, I'm not looking for something complicated. • In LaTeX prefer figures on text-heavy pages.

  Hi LaTeX seems to have a preference for placing figures together on a page, and placing surrounding text on a separate page. Can I somehow change that balance a bit, as I prefer figures to break up the text to avoid too black text-heavy pages. Example: \section{Some section} [Half a page of text] \begin{figure} [...] \caption{Figure text 1} \end{figure} [Half a page of text] \begin{figure} [...] \caption{Figure text 2} \end{figure} [More text] So what LaTeX usually does is to stack the two half pages of text on a single page, and the figures on the following page. I believe this really gives a bad balance, and bores the reader. So can I change that somehow? I know about postfixing the \begin{figure} with [ht!], but often it does not really matter. I would like to configure the balancing algorithms in LaTeX to naturally prefer pages with combined figures and text.

  Hi, I would like to know the popular ways of naming files in JavaScript and PHP development. I am working on a JS+PHP system, and I do not know how to name my files. Currently I do for JS: framework/ framework/widget/ framework/widget/TextField.js (Framework.widget.TextField()) Framework.js (Framework()) So, my folders are lowercase and objects CamelCase, but what should I do when the folder/namespace requires more than one word? And what about PHP? jQuery seems to follow: jquery.js jquery.ui.js jquery.plugin-name.js so that it is jquery(\.[a-z0-9-])*\.js but ExtJS follows completely different approach. Douglas Crockford only gives us details about his preference for syntax conventions.

• How to keep the session of user login?

  Hi, I have an app that requires user to register. I've got the app conected to PHP in my server to do the logic of register/login and so, this is not problem at all. But, I want to keep a session of the user in local, so the user doesn't have to login again every time he runs the app. So, I want something like this: First time user, he opens the app, register and login. Do some stuff with the app and closes it. Open the app again, the user is recognized so he doesn't need to login again. I only need to store an ID and a Username (both fetched from the DB in the login php method). What's the best way to do this?? I've thought about doing a custom preference, store the data in files or even a local DB (sqlite). Any suggestions?

• Simple cross platform GUI app

  I would like to know if there is any way that I could build a very simple GUI app (it doesn't even have to look good) that will run on a fresh install of Windows Vista and OS X with no other installations needed by the user. I would perfer not to use Java (just out of personal programming preference). I will use it though, if it is the only way. Specically, I am wondering if I can write a swing app with Scala or Groovy and run in on windows without them having to install anything. When the data changes in my application, I want the cell to change in excel. I have a client that claims it is possible and he has seen it, but has no proof and may be confused. • Oracle: '= ANY()' vs. 'IN ()'

  Hi all, I just stumbled upon something in ORACLE SQL (not sure if it's in others), that I am curious about. I am asking here as a wiki, since it's hard to try to search symbols in google... I just found that when checking a value against a set of values you can do WHERE x = ANY (a, b, c) As opposed to the usual WHERE x IN (a, b, c) So I'm curious, what is the reasoning for these two syntaxes? Is one standard and one some oddball Oracle syntax? Or are they both standard? And is there a preference of one over the other for performance reasons, or ? Just curious what anyone can tell me about that '= ANY' syntax. CheerZ!

• Entity Framework, what's so bad and what's so good?

  Hi all, I am curious as to what your opinions are in Entity Framework? I have read some things like the first version of it is super horrible because it doesn't handle many to many relationships (though many ORMs don't and I've never seen the issue with just making a linking table). Also is LINQ to Entities the same as Entity Framework? I think it is, but it seems like one term is used or the other. I have used Linq to SQL before, what are the advantages of it compared to that? In terms of coding preference I like to build everything from the ground up so I can fully understand it/be in control of the code I write. So I have heard that Entity Framework is harder and I know LinqToSQL handles a lot of stuff automatically, but specifically what are the differences? I appreciate your responses, Thanks =)

• What does: throw 0 do/mean? Is it "bad"?

  Context I came across some code, like this: if( Some_Condition ) throw 0; I googled a bit, and found a few other code snippets using that odd looking throw 0 form. I presume one would catch this as: catch(const int& e) { } Or is this a NULL ptr? to be caught as void* ? Question What does this throw 0 do? Is it special in some way? My normal preference would be to throw something that is (or derived from) std::exception. So to me this looks "bad". Is it "bad" ?

• Axis error about runtime location

  The error is: Exception occurred while reading or writing file {0}The Axis2 facets cannot be installed since the Axis2 runtime location has not been set. Go to the Web Services preference page and set the Axis2 runtime location under Axis2 Preferences. In the preferences mentioned, the location is set correctly and in fact, it says "Axis2 runtime loaded successfully" after loadign the correct runtime location. So what's going on? Any solutions other than re-installing eclipse or creating a new workspace? I am using Axis2 1.4.1 and eclipse.

• Where does Visual Studio stores the default browser to use in debug?

  Hi all, I'm using Firefox as my default browser but when working in Visual Studio, I'd like to fire up IE when I go in debug. We all know that in MVC application, there's no way to choose the default browser unless you add a web form file, right click it, select browse with and then force a browser to be the default one. Great. My simple question is: where does VS stores the browser I just tell him to use (registry? project file? some xml config file?) I'm asking because VS loose this preference several times a month. I'm fed up with making the brower trick again and again. Thanks in advance, Fabian

• How do I get a Mac ".command" file to automatically quit after running a shell script?

  In my shell script, my last lines are: ... echo "$l" done done exit I have Terminal preference set to "When the shell exits: Close the window". In all other cases, when I type "exit" or "logout", in Terminal, the window closes, but for this ".command" file (I can double-click on my shell script file, and the script runs), instead of closing the window, while the file's code says "exit", what shows on the screen is: ... $l done logout [Process completed] ...and the window remains open. Does anyone know how to get a shell script to run, and then just automatically quit the Terminal window on completion? Thanks!

  I have two AccessDataSources each returning one row. I want to use the data in each row to populate content on my page, so I figured I would use a Repeater or FormView. However, I would not necessarily want the labels bound to a particular DataSource placed together. For example, I might want labels from the following columns in order (DataSourceName.ColumnName): TestSetup.TestType, TestSummary.FormattedValue, TestSetup.DeviceChannel, TestSummary.CompletedOn. How do I handle this? Do I just have a separate Repeater/FormView for each value? Can I have both Repeater's/FormView's in 'scope' at the same time? Note: No language preference (C#/VB).

  I was trying to run a project in my local machine. I tried to load this jnilib file which I got from a running instance of this project on my Mac 10.6.2, System.load(lib.getAbsolutePath()); then I got this exception thrown: java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError, mach-o but wrong architecture I have check the jnilib with file command: libScreenMatchProxy.jnilib: Mach-O dynamically linked shared library i386 I guess this is because the jnilib file is compiled in 32bit but the Java comes with Mac10.6 is 64bit. So I go to Java Preference and set Java to use 32bit first. But it didn't work. As mentioned above, this jnilib file is copied from a running instance of the project on my Mac, so it should work. I don't understand why it working in the installed application but not in my Eclipse.

But Problem is that my application is not running as root user and i do not want my application to be as root user and also should not ask for any authentication in between. I want to tap all keyboard events globally. I am using CGEventTapCreate() for the same.In the documentation of CGEventTapCreate() API it is mentioned that, Event taps receive key up and key down events if one of the following conditions is true: The current process is running as the root user. Access for assistive devices is enabled. In Mac OS X v10.4 & later, you can enable this feature using System Preferences, Universal Access panel, Keyboard view. I tried manually by checking the Enable Access for assistive devices from System Preference and it gives me expected output. This is needed because the user can customise the column headers of the datagrid and his preference needs to be stored and shown to him on his next login. Using HTTPService, we tried sending the dataGrid.columns array as a string, as follows, var ht:HTTPService = new HTTPService(); ht.url = Config.getServerURL(); ht.method = URLRequestMethod.POST; ht.resultFormat = "text"; ht.request["action"] = "updateGrid"; ht.request["headercolumns"] = colsArray.toString(); The data is stord as comma separated array string in DB. Table 1 (users): id INT username TEXT favourite_food TEXT food_pref_id INT Table 2 (food_preferences): id INT food_type TEXT The logic is as follows: Let's say I have this in my food preference table: 1, 'VEGETARIAN' and this in the users table: 1, 'John', NULL, 1 2, 'Pete', 'Curry', 1 In which case John defaults to be a vegetarian, but Pete should show up as a person who enjoys curry. Question, is there any way to combine the query into one select statement, so that it would get the default from the preferences table if the favourite_food column is NULL? I can obviously do this in application logic, but would be nice just to offload this to SQL, if possible. DB is SQLite3...
