• How to deal with social login

  In my new web app I'm going to allow social login through Twitter (maybe), Facebook and Google and I'm in search of the best way to do it. Actually I'm using Rails with Devise + Omniauth and this is the problem: Should I ask the user to choose a password so that he can login without a social network? Or maybe the user should be able to set a password if he want (for example when editing his account?) The second way seems the best one but since Twitter doesn't provide user email and google doesn't provide an username I'll probably have to ask the user for username/email when he log in so in that case I may also ask for the password... waht do you think?

• GRUB 2 Error : No such disk

  I have gone through many pains to boot through my windows 7 partition. I had windows 7, then one fine day I installed Ubuntu and again formatted the partition where Ubuntu was installed only to find the my Windows does not boot(Probably corrupted MBR). I again installed Ubuntu later but the Grub could not detect windows. So I manually added windows by editing the file 40_custom. But when I select the win7 entry in the grub, it displays the error : no such disk. What do I do?? Additional Info : Ubuntu version : 11.10 x64|| Win 7 Home premium, 64 bit|| While in the process of debugging I once also came across the error : Sector 32 being in use by FlexNet.|| Strongly in need of booting my Win 7 without any formats or fresh OS installations. Thankful for any Diagnostics and Solutions to my problem.

• Visiting China

  This summer I had the chance to visit China.  My brother and his wife are living in China and teaching English.  I spent a little over two weeks in Shanghai, Suzhou and Yancheng.  During that time I wrote some detailed updates for family and a few close friends on the impressions of a good Midwestern kid visiting the Middle Kingdom. • Decrease filesize when resizing with mogrify

  I love the command line options of imagemagick. Mogrify is great to resize images and change quality, which is what I use most often. However, I have noted that the filesize if often larger than what it should be. Especially with small images. For instance, I have a regular 640px (width) photo, which I change to quality 80 and a width of 80px: mogrify -quality 80 -resize 80 file.jpg Works well and my image gets resized and the quality is changed to 80. However, the filesize is around 40Kb. For such a tiny image, that is huge! When I use mtPaint, and open the file and save it (not changing anything, just CTRL+O, CTRL+S), the filesize decreases with more than 95% to less than 2Kb! I have seen this is often the case. What goes wrong?

  If anybody has ever noticed that when you open a image in Facebook something like this happens:- suppose you are at your homepage on Facebook:- the URL is https://www.facebook.com/ now if you open a image it gets opened in new modal like window and URL changes to:- https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151125374887397&set=a.338008237396.161268.36922302396&type=1&theater As far as I know in any common case a modal overlay would have kept the url in the address bar the same , My question is how does facebook / pintrest achieve this behaviour of not re-loading the whole page but still achieving the change in the address bar. Is there any jquery or javascript plugin for this?

  It has been a headache trying to install this printer. All the tutorials I found are for older versions of Ubuntu, and none of them work. How can I install this printer? • AGPL License - does it apply in this scanerio?

  There is an AGPLv3 based software (Client) that makes web service calls (using SOAP) to another software (Server - commercial, cloud based). There is no common code or any connection whatsoever between these two except for the web service calls being made. My questions - Does the Server need to be AGPL too? I guess not - but would like to confirm. Let us say the end point URL for the Server can be configured on the Client side (by editing an XML file) to connect it to different Servers (again, there is no connection other than the webservice calls being made) does it require any of these Servers being AGPL? Are there any issues in running the Client as a DLL that is loaded by other commercial applications on users' desktops? Does it require these other applications also to be AGPL? • Why does starting a program log me out?

  I'm not a computer nerd but have been able to fix Ubuntu/Linux problems in the pass two years with a Google search but this on has me stumped. I upgraded to 12.04 about thirty days ago and all was well except that every time I tried to load KeePassX it would go to the login screen. I installed KeePass2 and all seemed to work. Last week I tried to load Bibble5 (Raw photo editor) and it would try to load and then back to the login screen. After a few days I gave up and downloaded Corel After Shot Pro (Corel's now owns Bibble5) and it has the same problem. Could someone please head me into the steps I need to follow to find out what is the cause? I'm interested in learning more about the Linux system. How to correct any future problems like this? • I have two versions of glib on my system, and I don't know how to remove the old one

  While trying to compile a program (pygobject), running ./configure I am told that I don't have glib. So, I download the tarball and compile and install, no problems. now when I try to ./configure the package again, I get the following error: checking for GLIB - version >= 2.24.0... *** 'pkg-config --modversion glib-2.0' returned 2.34.2, but GLIB (2.34.0) *** was found! If pkg-config was correct, then it is best *** to remove the old version of GLib. You may also be able to fix the error *** by modifying your LD_LIBRARY_PATH enviroment variable, or by editing *** /etc/ld.so.conf. Server A is located in my room and I can install Ubuntu on it. What is the goal? I want to edit files on computer A (e.g.) and computer A should update the file on my server, afterwards the server should update the files on computer B and C. (The same goes for editing files on computer B, afterwards the server has to update the files on A and C.) How am I able to set-up a network like this? • Wired internet speed is slow in Ubuntu 12.04

  I have dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 on my Dell N4110 laptop. I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my existing windows 7 hard drive. I am experiencing very slow internet speed on Ubuntu(wired connection). But on Windows,internet is really fast. I disabled ipv6 by editing /etc/sysctl.conf No avail. Then i run the following command. sudo ethtool -s eth0 speed 100 duplex full autoneg off No benefit. I am having "Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller [10ec:8136] (rev 05)" network card.

• phpBB3 antispam: mod for "patrolling" the forum?

  I've been working on various antispam measure in a phpBB3-based forum I host. Now I was thinking of an extension/mod that ties in with editing of posts (and later perhaps signatures/profiles) in that new text or edited text defaults to something like "not patrolled" and moderators could then in a special queue review text that contains links or similar item (based on heuristics). Now the question: does such a mod exist (I didn't find one)? If it does exist and anyone has used it (or them), please include your experiences with it in the answer.

• Building an web/ mobile app like instagram [on hold]

  I would like to build an app like instagram or twitter. User can upload photo, type a few words, hashtag, share their location. And there will be a page like newsfeed showing updates. User can login with oauth. How do I store those data especially photos? (In those cloud thins? like Google cloud? I don't know how those cloud works) and what is the cost of it (if can compress user uploaded photos?). I currently only knows php, javascript and mysql.
