  Client OS - Window XP Domain Controller:- Window server 2008 Standard R2 I had one Window XP system, i want to find out when the system has started or boot ( at what time and at which date ). I don't know which parameter / word should i search in Event Log. For finding out shutdown time, i simply find the word "Shutdown" in Event Log. • Can a SQL Server have a CPU bottleneck when Processor Time is under 30%

  Is it in principle possible for the CPU to be the bottleneck on a SQL Server if the Performance Counter Processor:Processor Time is constantly under 30% on all cores? Or does low Processor Time automatically allow me to rule out the CPU as a potential trouble source? I am asking this because SQL Nexus lists CPU as the top bottleneck on a server with low Processor Time values.

  As a programmer, do you see any professional or other advantage in using your real name in online discourse, versus an invented handle? I've always gone by a single username and had my real name displayed whenever possible, for a few reasons: My interests online are almost exclusively professional and aboveboard. It constructs a search-friendly public log of all of my work, everywhere. If someone wants to contact me, there are many ways to do it. My portfolio of work is all tied to me personally. Possible cons to full disclosure include: If you feel like becoming involved in something untoward, it could be harder. The psychopath who inherits your project can more easily find out where you live. You might be spammed by people who are not worth the precious time that could be better spent writing more of the brilliant software you're famous for. Your portfolio of work is all tied to you personally. It seems, anyway, that a vast majority of StackOverflow users go by invented handles rather than real names. Notable exceptions include the best-known users, who are typically well established in the industry. But how could we ever become legendary rockstar programmers if we didn't get our names out there? • Dealing with Time Zones

  Hi All, I need some guidance with one of my project requirements, I am developing an application which has to deal with various time zones. Scenario: User 1 is from India, so his time zone would be GMT+05:30 User 2 is from UK, so his time zone would be GMT+01:00 If the User 1 sends a message to User 2, I want to show the Message Sent/Received Time as per the user’s time zone. For example User 1 sends a message at 6:30 Indian time, when User 2 would view the message it would show as 2:00 UK time. Here goes my question, whenever I save the message should I convert it to GMT+00, so all my base times stamps are the same and then later when I display the message, I convert it back to User specific time zone. Would this be complex? Is this the best way of doing this? I like to get views for both saving and displaying, also when I should do the time conversion from optimization point of view. I would need do deal with any/all timezones. I am developing this application with PHP and MySQL and I am aware of timezone conversion method come with both PHP and MySQL. I am just trying to figure out the best way of doing this. Look forward to have all valuable suggestions. Note : As of now I am not much worried with day/light savings. Thanks Ravi

• Why ntp settle time toe long?

  I simply try to set-up NTP to my system. Both server and clients will run on my computer which are linked together with local link. One of them will have the reference clock. Both the server and Client are linux Ubuntu. I install ntp daemon to both sides. In clients, I enter the ip address of the server to /etc/ntp.conf. Everything works fine. However, the setting of the time to correct time in client side takes too long time (around 17 minutes). Is it possible to gather correct time just at startup. I write some code that regularly calls "ntpdate " by system call and the problem is solved but there has to be something that allows me to decrease the poll time of the client to 1-2 minutes. There are some settings as maxpoll - minpoll in ntp.conf, but I couldn't manage to understand their function, because with the best configuration (minpoll 4? 16 seconds?) I also cannot see that client side corrects its time before 10 minutes. In addition, in some cases my client is an embedded system (ARM - IGEP board) and it always opens with an irrelevant date (2-3 years ago). So the time that takes to correct the time should not depend on the time difference also.

  Let's face it. When you want to learn something completely new, be it mathematics or foreign languages, it's easiest to learn when you get real world scenarios in front of you, with theory applied. For example, trigonometry can be extremely interesting when applied to creation of 2D platform games. Norwegian can be really interesting to learn if you live in Norway. When I try to look at a new programming language, I always find these steps the hardest: What tools do I need to compile and how do I do it Introduction-step: Why is this programming language so cool? Where and how is it used? (The step I am looking for, real-world scenarios) The rest, deep diving into the language, pure theory and such, is often much easier if you have completed step 1 and 2. Because now you know what it's all about, and can just read the specification when you need to. What I ask is, do you have any recommendations for places I can find such material for programming languages? Be it websites or companies selling books in this style, I'm interested. Also, I am interested in all languages. (If I had found a "real-world usage" explained for even INTERCAL, I would be interested). In some other thread here, I found a book called "Seven Languages in Seven Weeks". This is kind of what I am looking for, but I believe there must be "more like this".

• Flash video plays well, but time and time-remaining are out of sync.

  Hey guys, Could be a known issue, an issue with my code or an oversight on my part. I have created a video player in flash. I have got it playing progressive and streaming over rtmp/rtmpt so that is all fine. My only issue is that when the video's are playing, the time-codes for time played and time remaining are not synced. So, if my video is 20 secs long and 5 have been played, time played will be 5secs, time remaining will be 16secs until it updates about half a second later. So even though they are both being set with the same line of code, there are not changing at the same time. The time played changes, then a split second later the time remaining changes. Anyone got any idea what this could be. Maybe a miscalculation on my part. Maybe I need to round up or down the remaining time. How can I sync the two times. I understand this is probably an tough question to answer, I have done my best to explain it. Thanks in advance.

I want to develop an authentication scheme which is based on biometrics, Every human being have a unique key-hold time,digraph time error rate. Key-Hold Time : Time difference between pressing and releasing a key . Digraph Time : Time difference between releasing one and pressing next one. Error Rate : No of times backspace is pressed. I got these metrics from a paper "Keystroke-based User Identification on Smart Phones" by Saira Zahid1, Muhammad Shahzad1, Syed Ali Khayam1,2, Muddassar Farooq1. I was planning to get the datasets to test my algorithm from openmoko phone, but the phone is mis-behaving and I am finding trouble in generating these time data-sets. • best practice to obtain time zone for iPhone vs iPod Touch

  I am creating an app that requires the users current time zone. If the device being used is an iPhone and the user has their Time Zone set to automatically change, I think I can be fairly confident that localTimeZone or systemTimezone will give me the correct time zone for the user's location. If on the other hand the device is an iPod Touch, the time zone returned by localTimeZone and systemTimeZone appears to always be whatever time zone is set in the Date & Time settings, regardless of the user's actual location. I tried using location services but, while the lat/long is being provided properly, the time zone offset in the timesStamp I am getting is always the same as whatever the user has set for their time zone setting. Any suggestions? John

  Hi. I have a .NET WebService (written in C#), that is supposed to serve people around the world. With each request I get the user's datetime in his own time zone with the format : "yyyy/MM/dd HH:mm ZZZZ". I have to convert the string to something representing the original date and time and specifying the time zone in GMT. I have to make some logical calculations and keep it in the database. The regular DateTime doe's not support this. it does not have a property specifying the time zone. When I try to convert my string into DateTime - it simply converts it to my local time. I do not want to keep my time in UTC, because I have some logic that has to run per user by his own time. Does anyone know a C# class that handles this? Thanks!

• php time 2 hours wrong for only 50% some users

  I am having huge issues with php time. For some reason it shows a different time (by 2 hours) to some users and the correct time to other users. The code is H:i:s d-M-y T when I view the page in a browser from my PC it tells me its 11am when infact its 9am, when I check via a browser using one my RDP's I get the correct time. Both PC's are in the country (uk) both PC's have the same system time etc. Tried setting the timezone default, but no matter what I do the server still shows some users the correct time, and other users the time 2 hour forward, any ideas? the code is echo gmdate("H:i:s d-M-y T"); <?php echo gmdate("H:i:s d-M-y T"); ?>

As you can see, the end result is 4 tuples but it seems like it should be a fast join by using the available index after it limited it down with the name clause, although very complex.

• WordPerfect programmers refusing to use anything but assembler

  There is a version (popularised by Joel Spolsky) attributing the demise of WordPerfect to a refusal of its programmers to use anything but assembler that led to delay of the first WPwin release and as result eventually to losing the all important battle with Microsoft. There are a few references to programming work being done using assembler in the autobiographical book "Almost Perfect" by W. E. Pete Peterson who used to have a major influence at running the corporation. But these references go back to early 80's when WordPerfect was trying to gain a significant market share by defeating WordStar and not early nineties when the battle with MS took place. I am looking for a second independent source to confirm the assumption. Maybe someone who worked for WordPerfect Corporation at a time, who was close to the company, or had a chance to see the source could clarify the issue. Your help is much appreciated, thanks! Please note that this question is not about any other theories or reasons behind WordPerfect demise. I really just need to clarify whether they used assembler as a primary language for WPwin and (as a bonus really) whether there were discussions held within the corporation about assembler being the right choice. Concisely: Did WPCorp use assembler as a primary language for WPwin? Were discussions held at a time amongst WP Corp staff about assembler being the right choice (was it management or programmers decision)?

• Limit the amount of data that can be stored in a folder on Ubuntu Server 12.04?

  I'm in the process of building my first server. It's up, it's running, I'm transferring copious amounts of data away from my horrid little Drobo (DO NOT BUY ONE OF THESE, EVER). However, there's one thing I have yet to do: I'd like to set it up for Time Machine backups as well. I've seen all the guides and I have some idea of how to set the whole thing up, but the issue is that Time Machine will just fill up as much space as you let it. So if I let it lose in my 8 TB zpool it'll slowly consume every last available sector. This, of course, is not acceptable. I have a folder at the root of my zpool called "ZFS Time Machine" and I would like to limit it to 1 TB (all I need for backup purposes). However, I have no idea how to do that. Is this possible? I can continue using a small external hard drive attached via FW800 if I have to but I'd much rather prefer putting everything on my server.

• SQL analytical mash-ups deliver real-time WOW! for big data

  One of the overlooked capabilities of SQL as an analysis engine, because we all just take it for granted, is that you can mix and match analytical features to create some amazing mash-ups. As we move into the exciting world of big data these mash-ups can really deliver those "wow, I never knew that" moments. While Java is an incredibly flexible and powerful framework for managing big data there are some significant challenges in using Java and MapReduce to drive your analysis to create these "wow" discoveries. One of these "wow" moments was demonstrated at this year's OpenWorld during Andy Mendelsohn's general keynote session.  Here is the scenario - we are looking for fraudulent activities in our big data stream and in this case we identifying potentially fraudulent activities by looking for specific patterns. We using geospatial tagging of each transaction so we can create a real-time fraud-map for our business users. Where we start to move towards a "wow" moment is to extend this basic use of spatial and pattern matching, as shown in the above dashboard screen, to incorporate spatial analytics within the SQL pattern matching clause. This will allow us to compute the distance between transactions. Apologies for the quality of this screenshot….hopefully below you see where we have extended our SQL pattern matching clause to use location of each transaction and to calculate the distance between each transaction: This allows us to compare the time of the last transaction with the time of the current transaction and see if the distance between the two points is possible given the time frame. Obviously if I buy something in Florida from my favourite bike store (may be a new carbon saddle for my Trek) and then 5 minutes later the system sees my credit card details being used in Arizona there is high probability that this transaction in Arizona is actually fraudulent (I am fast on my Trek but not that fast!) and we can flag this up in real-time on our dashboard: In this post I have used the term "real-time" a couple of times and this is an important point and one of the key reasons why SQL really is the only language to use if you want to analyse  big data. One of the most important questions that comes up in every big data project is: how do we do analysis? Many enlightened customers are now realising that using Java-MapReduce to deliver analysis does not result in "wow" moments. These "wow" moments only come with SQL because it is offers a much richer environment, it is simpler to use and it is faster - which makes it possible to deliver real-time "Wow!". • RTS AI: where to start?

  I'd like to begin tinkering around with an RTS AI, but I'm having trouble finding a good environment to work with, ie a game that has been already created. I have looked at Spring RTS and Bos Wars, but they don't seem to be conducive to creating simple examples. I am not totally opposed to writing my own game environment, it would just take a long time. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can get my feet wet without programming my own game?

• Which run-time charting tools produce the best time axes?

  I need to generate and embed a time series chart into an ASP.NET application. Most run-time charting tools generate poor time axes, especially if the time scale is dynamic ie the user may choose to view data over a time scale of days, weeks, months or years. I'm looking for recommended tools that can be integrated into my app. Two that show promise are Chart Director and Google's annotated timeline visualization. Both are quite different in their implementation and have pros/cons.

• UTC time stamp on Windows

  I have a buffer with the UTC time stamp in C, I broadcast that buffer after every ten seconds. The problem is that the time difference between two packets is not consistent. After 5 to 10 iterations the time difference becomes 9, 11 and then again 10. Kindly help me to sort out this problem. I am using <time.h> for UTC time.
