    There is a question in my programming languages textbook that is as follows: Write a C function that includes the following sequence of statements: x = 21; int x; x = 42; Run the program and explain the results. Rewrite the same code in C++ and Java and compare the results. I have written code, and played with it in all three languages but I can not even get it to compile. This includes declaring x above the three lines as well as in the calling function (as this question is obviously attempting to illustrate scoping issues) I'd like to explain the results and do the comparisons on my own, as it is an assignment question but I was wondering if anyone had any insight as to how to get this code to compile?     Hi all! I'm currently working on web application using VB in ASP.NET. Right now I have 1 page with panels that we are using to show/hide depending on the flow. When the user first comes in, he/she is presented with a gridview containing a list of clients. Then the user, clicks a link from a row and is presented a form where he/she can update the clients' info. Originally, I had a HYPERLINKFIELD that put the clientId in the url, then I'd grab the url and do the code appropriately <asp:HyperLinkField Text='<%$ Resources:Resource, ManageClient %>' DataNavigateUrlFields="CLIENT_ID" DataNavigateUrlFormatString="~/clients/manage.aspx?clientId={0}" /> Now, I'm rethinking that and wondering if it's better to use SESSIONs to grab the clientID via this instead <asp:TemplateField Visible="false"><ItemTemplate><asp:Label runat="server" ID="hidClientId" Text='<%# Bind("CLIENT_ID")%>' Visible="false" /></ItemTemplate></asp:TemplateField> <asp:ButtonField Text='<%$ Resources:Resource, ManageClient %>' CommandName="Manage" /> Or use the POST method, which I'm not sure how it works in .NET (but I've used it in PHP) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Third party Application's Idle Session expiry

    We have a third party application running. It shows login dialog when idle for 20 minutes. We need to prevent the application to display login screen. We do not have any idea how idle state is handled internally in that application. We have done the follwoing with no luck. Created an small application in c# which focus it after every 5 minutes (using SetForegroundWindow()) and send a BM_CLICK message to one of its child window. Does not work. focus it after every 5 minutes (using SetForegroundWindow()) and move the cursor few pixels then restore cursor at its previous position. This does not work too! Is there any other way to achieve the goal?

  • How to use named_scope to incrementally construct a complex query?

    I want to use Rails named_scope to incrementally build complex queries that are returned from external methods. I believe I can get the behavior I want with anonymous scopes like so: def filter_turkeys Farm.scoped(:conditions => {:animal => 'turkey'}) end def filter_tasty Farm.scoped(:conditions => {:tasty => true}) end turkeys = filter_turkeys is_tasty = filter_tasty tasty_turkeys = filter_turkeys.filter_tasty But say that I already have a named_scope that does what these anonymous scopes do, can I just use that, rather than having to declare anonymous scopes? Obviously one solution would be to pass my growing query to each of the filter methods, a la def filter_turkey(existing_query) existing_query.turkey # turkey is a named_scoped that filters for turkey end But that feels like an un-DRY way to solve the problem. Oh, and if you're wondering why I would want to return named_scope pieces from methods, rather than just build all the named scopes I need and concatenate them together, it's because my queries are too complex to be nicely handled with named_scopes themselves, and the queries get used in multiple places, so I don't want to manually build the same big hairy concatenation multiple times.

    Hello, Really getting in to javascript and looking around at some patterns. One I have come accross is the module pattern. Its seems like a nice way to think of chucks of functionality so I went ahead and tried to implement it with jQuery. I ran in to a snag though. These both use jQuery methods. The problem is that the .html() method works fine however i can not add the class. No errors result and the class does not get added. What is happening here? Why is the class not getting added to the div?

    i am planning to use 2 dedicated root servers rented at a hosting provider. those machines will run tomcat 6 in a cluster. if i will add additional machines later on - it is unlikely that they will be accessible with multicast, because they will be located in different subnets. is it possible to run tomcat without multicast? all tutorials for tomcat 6 clustering include multicast heartbeat. are there any alternatives to SimpleTcpCluster? or are other alternatives more appropriate in this situation?

  • Using a singleton database class in functions and multiple scripts(PHP) - best use methods

    I have a singleton db connection which I get with: $dbConnect = myDatabase::getInstance(); which is easy enough. My question is what is the least rhetorical and legitimate way of using this connection in functions and classes? It seems silly to have to declare the variable global, pass it into every single function, and/or recreate this variable within every function. Is there another answer for this? Obviously I'm a noob and I can work my way around this problem 10 different ways, none of which is really attractive to me. It would be a lot easier if I could have that $dbConnect variable accessible in any function without needing to declare it global or pass it in. I do know I can add the variable to the $_SERVER array...is there something wrong with doing this? It seems somewhat inappropriate to me. Another quick question: Is it bad practice to do this: $result = myDatabase::getInstance()-query($query); from directly within a function?

    We have a stored procedure in Oracle that uses global temporary tables. In most of our other stored procedures, first thing we do is delete data from global temporary tables. However, in few of the stored procedures we do not have the delete's. Are there any other options other than adding the delete statements? Can something be done on the Server side to forcefully delete data from those temporary tables when that SP is ran?

  • Awk appears to disconnect my DB2 session when piping

    Hello. I'm attempting to run the following command in Korn Shell (ksh): set -A INDEXES `db2 "describe indexes for table ${TABSCHEMA}.${TABNAME} show detail" | awk '{print $1"."$2}'` What I'm attempting to achieve is place a list of the indexes over a particular table into an array which I can later iterate through. The problem is, when I run the above command the contents of the array starts with the error message of 'SQL1024N' (which is telling me that the database connection does not exist). However, if I remove the 'awk' at the end of the statement as so: set -A INDEXES `db2 "describe indexes for table ${TABSCHEMA}.${TABNAME} show detail"` it works just fine (well, to the extent its returning data. Obviously without the awk I'm not capturing the correct data). Does anyone know why the awk is having this affect? I appreciate there is more than one way to get this data, but it baffles me as to why this is happening. Thanks in advance. Greg.

    I am having problems with modifying objects inside blocks and not getting the expected values outside the blocks. This chunk of code is supposed to transform a bunch of points in 3d space, calculate a score (the rmsd or root mean squared deviation), and store both the score and the set of points that produced that score if it is lower than the current lowest score. At the end, I want to print out the best bunch of points. first = get_transformed_points(ARGV[0]) second = get_transformed_points(ARGV[1]) best_rmsd = first.rmsd(second) best_points = second #transform the points around x, y, and z and get the rmsd. If the new points # have a smaller rmsd, store them. ROTATION = 30 #rotate by ROTATION degrees num_rotations = 360/ROTATION radians = ROTATION * (Math::PI/180) num_rotations.times do |i| second = second * x_rotate num_rotations.times do |j| second = second * y_rotate num_rotations.times do |k| second = second * z_rotate rmsd = first.rmsd(second) if rmsd < best_rmsd then best_points = second best_rmsd = rmsd end end end end File.open("#{ARGV[1]}.out", "w") {|f| f.write(best_points.to_s)} I can print out the points that are getting stored inside the block, and they are getting transformed and stored correctly. However, when I write out the points to a file at the end, they are the same as the initial set of points. Somehow the best_points = second chunk doesn't seem to be doing anything outside of the block. It seems like there are some scoping rules that I don't understand here. I had thought that since I declared and defined best_points above, outside of the blocks, that it would be updated inside the blocks. However, it seems that when the blocks end, it somehow reverts back to the original value. Any ideas how to fix this? Is this a problem with blocks specifically?

    Hi all, I have an extended userprofile with AUTH_PROFILE_MODULE (ref: http://tinyurl.com/yhracqq) I would like to set a user.is_guru() method similar to user.is_active(). This would results for al views (or rather templates) to e.g. disable/enable certain user messages, displaying of widgets, etc. The boolean is stored in the extended user profile model, but I want to avoid hitting the DB for every view. So the questions is .. Do I use a context_processor, a template tag, session_dict or what have you to, possible cached, store this info for the duration of the users visit. Note: I dont have performance issues, so it's definitely filed under premature optimization. I just want to avoid generating extra work in the future :). Any pointers are very welcome.   • Android and PHP - Do I need to use sessions?

    I have created an Android App that communicates with a PHP web server. They both send JSON to each other. My App is almost finished, however there is one thing left to do: authentication. Since the user's username and password will be stored in Android SharedPreferences, is there any need to use PHP sessions, given that the user won't need to enter the username/password at every request? Since I can just send the username and password in the HTTP POST header for every request, and that I will be using SSL, is this sufficient? I guess I could add an extra field in the header called 'random' that just adds a random value, just to use as a salt so that the encrypted SSL payload will be different everytime. The reason why I don't want to use sessions is that my Android App would either have to handle cookies, or managed the storage of the session ID. If there are some serious cons to using my method above, then I'm more than happy to use sessions, however all advice is appreciated. Thanks

  • C++ Why am I unable to use an enum declared globally outside of the class it was declared in?

    Right now, my project has two classes and a main. Since the two classes inherit from each other, they are both using forward declarations. In the first object, right underneath the #include statement, I initialize two enums, before the class definition. I can use both enums just fine inside that class. However, if I try to use those enums in the other class, which inherits from the first one, I get an error saying the enum has not been declared. If I try to redefine the enum in the second class, I get a redefinition error. I have even tried using a trick I just read about, and putting each enum in its own namespace; that didn't change anything.
