  • Personal VPN Solutions

    I want to set up a VPN for my laptop to connect back at home so that I don't have to directly expose my desktop computer to the internet. Here is what I have: Internet -> DD-WRT v24sp1-mega -> Desktop PC w/ Windows 7 Ultimate -> MacBook w/ OSX 10.6 What would be the easiest thing to do? DD-WRT has PPTP and OpenVPN built in and Windows 7 has RRAS itself but thus far I've run into some problems. Are there any other alternatives, or suggestions on getting these to work? PPTP I tried setting up PPTP directly on DD-WRT using these directions. When I tried connecting using my external IP from the MacBook I just kept getting that the remote server did not respond. OpenVPN According to the instructions here I don't have enough open nvram to set up OpenVPN. RRAS I got RRAS set up without a problem and can connect from the MacBook to the Windows 7 box while I'm on the same network. I port forwarded 1723 on the DD-WRT back to the Windows 7 box and made sure that PPTP Passthrough was enabled. Again, like PPTP, it just kept timing out.

  • Non-functioning AutoFilter on Locked Cells in Office 2008 - works in Office 2007

    I'm looking into a problem for someone, who works in a mixed OS environment. She has created an Excel spreadsheet in Office 2007 to act as a directory, with AutoFilter turned on for names, email addresses, departments etc. To make sure no one accidentally edits email addresses (for example), she has protected the work sheet. Accessing this worksheet on a PC running Excel 2007, everything runs as you'd expect. You can filter the sheet by any of the auto-filtered columns, and because the sheet is protected, the data integrity is guaranteed. However, if you access the sheet on a Mac running Excel 2008, you can't filter the columns. What's strange here is that the AutoFilter dropdown arrows do appear in each of the column headers as you would expect. It's just that nothing happens if you click on them. If you select one of the column header cells (say, 'First Name') and check the menu: Data-Filter, you can see that AutoFilter is ticked. As another datapoint, you also seem to be able to apply an Advanced filter to these rows on the protected sheets. Does anyone know why this might be? It seems to be a compatibility issue between Excel 2007/2008 (I know the codebase isn't the same), but I can't find any references to it in documentation or forums anywhere, and it would be good to know if there's a way around this.     I recently bought a UART WiFi module ( this one ) and configured it with right SSID but wrong password( and I don't know what it is ). The problem is that I can't reset this module to its manufacture settings and I can't connect to this module via serial port to configure it with some wire or cable. But I'm sure that my module is trying to connect my access point but with wrong network key ( because in logs of my access point I can see my module that trying to connect but it can't ) So, I wonder to know is there any way to create or configure a network (using some access point or something else) based on WPA2 Personal security that accepts any WPA2-PSK passwords ? Or is there any other solution for this problem ? If no, is there anyway to see what password this module using to connect to that network ? ( If yes, then I can change password of my network to that password and access to this module's admin panel ) I tried create an open network ( without any security key ) but my module just searches for WPA2 based networks ( I think ).

  • Rsync: how to mount truecrypt on-the-fly on the receiving side?

    The short version: how can I keep an rsync backup on a truecrypt volume? The hard part is to mount/unmount this volume on the fly when it is needed for rsync. Details This is my current backup configuration (which works fairly well for the most part): backup source is on Win7 64 bit, destination is a remote Linux box (Debian) actual data transfer is done by rsync via ssh (cwRsync with cygwin) rsync daemon is started on demand via ssh On the Linux box the backup is protected by file permissions only. I want to increase security here and put the backup into a truecrypt volume. I can fuse-mount that volume manually in the shell. The question is now how can I make rsync not only open an ssh connection and starting the rsync daemon, but also to mount the truecrypt volume before (and unmount it after)? My money is on option --rsync-path which can be used to pass a command line to ssh - provided that stdin and stdout still work the same. I guess that command would have to be a shell script. Is this possible, and what would the script look like? For reference, here's a quote of that option: --rsync-path=PROGRAM Use this to specify what program is to be run on the remote machine to start-up rsync. Often used when rsync is not in the default remote-shell's path (e.g. --rsync-path=/usr/local/bin/rsync). Note that PROGRAM is run with the help of a shell, so it can be any program, script, or command sequence you'd care to run, so long as it does not corrupt the standard-in & standard-out that rsync is using to communicate. One tricky example is to set a different default directory on the remote machine for use with the --relative option. For instance: rsync -avR --rsync-path="cd /a/b && rsync" host:c/d /e/ This is the full rsync man page. Truecrypt volume auto-mount Solved! Turns out this option is actually key to auto-mounting the truecrypt volume on the remote side. The following command line does the trick (one line!): rsync $options -e "ssh -p $port -i ../.ssh/id_dsa" --rsync-path="/usr/local/bin/truecrypt -d && /usr/local/bin/truecrypt --fs-options=rw,sync,utf8,uid=$UID,umask=0007 --non-interactive -p $password $pathToVolume $remoteMountDir && rsync" $localSourceDir $user:$remoteMountMountDir Truecrypt volume auto-dismount Still open: how can I unmount the volume when rsync is done? Not sure if the following makes sense to anyone but I give it a try... Right now I am unmounting (truecrypt -d), then mounting again, then continuing with rsync. At this time rsync needs to do its thing but I dont know when its done. Adding ... rsync && truecrypt -d to the command line does not work because then the rsync daemon does not start. This is because rsync starts the daemon with parameter --server on the remote side and that parameter would go to the final truecrypt -d.

  • Mount points disappear from network share directory listing

    When browsing a network share which contains volume mount points, said mount points disappear from the directory listing. The mount points are still accessible directly by path, just not present in the directory listing. The machine is a Vista SP1 32 bit machine. It has a network share that contains volume mount points to the volumes of the Vista machine (created using the SetVolumeMountPoint API). When browsing the network share from another computer (either Win7 64 bit, Win7 32 bit or Vista SP1 32 bit) using Windows Explorer the following problem occurs: First, both volume mount points called C, D appear fine. I browse into directory C and see all its contents properly. I go back to the root of the shared folder and now I only see D. C has disappeared from the directory listing. I enter D and see all its contents. Go back to the root of the shared folder and now it's empty. D disappeared as well. If I manually go to \\<path to shared folder>\C from the address bar - then all is fine and I can browse its contents (same with D). The same issue does NOT occur when creating a similar share with volume mount points on Windows XP SP2 or SP3. Has anyone came across this problem? Any ideas how to work around it?

    I have dual monitor setup and I was wondering if there's a way to specifiy an overlap between the 2 displays. Ideally, the area where the 2 monitors cross over would be repeated on both monitors (ven diagram-ish). Currently the display settings can only work when they're adjacent. On a side note, is it possible to seperate the monitors so that there's an assumed space between the displays? I'm currently running windows 7.

    I am currently choosing between Intel Core i7-3770 (quad, Ivy) and Intel Core i7-3930K (6 cores, Sandy Bridge-E). This machine will be used for both work (Adobe, Autodesk software, graphic and coding-related) and gaming. Even if some applications I will use are capable to utilize all 6 cores at once, is it worth preferring Sandy Bridge-E to newer Ivy Bridge? Games aren't and probably will perform better on Ivy, won't they? 6-core is also twice as expensive as a quad Ivy.

    I recently bought an iriver ebook reader but it doesn't support chm files. I have bought a bunch of O'Reilly books and with them have the soft copy as well. Some books convert quite well using calibre. However, there is one book I have that just won't convert. So I used HH to decompile it and now I have a bunch of html files. These html files contain references to images in folders. How can I now join them all into a single document which Calibre can read and properly convert into an epub or am I going about this the wrong way? I've read this question but it removes the images and the images are quite important to the content.

    I want to have several machines set up as digital signage displays and pull media (.pptx, video, images etc) from a centralized place. This is easy enough, but what I really need help doing is managing which extenders play specific media and the schedule from a Windows 7 x64 client hopefully within Media Center but I'm open to another management app. Is it possible to dictate the time and location each media is pushed to? I can use either a full machine running a full Win7 OS or a simple MC extender.

    I am able to access this url (Don't bother clicking on it, it's just an example): http://my.url.com/ This web site works: http://localhost:8080/tfs/web/ I setup my router to forward port 80 to the PC hosting the web site. I also forward port 8080 to the same box. But when I try to access this url I get the eror "Page Cannot be displayed:" http://my.url.com:8080/tfs/web/ I fwded port 8080 the same way I fwded port 80. I also turned off Windows Firewall, in case it was blocking port 8080. Any theories why port 80 works but 8080 does not?

Here are the main things that I will be using the Mac Mini for. git Repositories (via Gitosis) build server (build projects in git repositories using commit hooks and run tests) simple websites (PHP) learning C++ in a non-Windows environment What distribution would you recommend? Please provide some detail in your answer so that I can make an meaningful decision. Because I am looking to use the mini as more of a server than a normal desktop machine I was thinking of Ubuntu Server, I'm not sure if that is over kill though given the hardware I am using.
