  • Samba: share home directories when home directories are symbolic links

    I have set up a new Ubuntu 9.10 system for five users. In the system is a large LVM volume where all the data is to be kept. The main system disk is not for this purpose, so I attempted to move the home directories using usermod -d /var/data/username -m And started creating my shares for these new home locations. But then I thought: hey, Samba has built-in home directory sharing! So I enabled that, and it didn't work. The shares were not published to the network. Only the share for user 'owen' was published; his folder hadn't been moved. So I thought: maybe Samba home sharing only works for default home locations, so how about I move the home directories back to where they were, and then make them symlinks. root@boxenmkiv:/home# ls -l total 4 lrwxrwxrwx 1 brett brett 25 2010-04-03 08:48 brett -> /var/data/brett/ lrwxrwxrwx 1 carly carly 23 2010-04-03 08:48 carly -> /var/data/carly/ lrwxrwxrwx 1 dave dave 21 2010-04-03 08:48 dave -> /var/data/dave/ lrwxrwxrwx 1 kate kate 23 2010-04-03 08:47 kate -> /var/data/kate/ drwxr-xr-x 4 owen owen 4096 2010-04-03 08:44 owen Like so. Still no go. The only users share which is published to the network is 'owen' who as you can see above has not had his home directory moved. I have also added the following to my smb.conf [global] follow symlinks = yes wide symlinks = yes unix extensions = no With no luck. Am I going about doing this the entirely wrong way? Should I just give up and manually create shares for the users? Thanks in advance.

  • Configure a wireless network that accepts any WPA2-PSK network key

    I recently bought a UART WiFi module ( this one ) and configured it with right SSID but wrong password( and I don't know what it is ). The problem is that I can't reset this module to its manufacture settings and I can't connect to this module via serial port to configure it with some wire or cable. But I'm sure that my module is trying to connect my access point but with wrong network key ( because in logs of my access point I can see my module that trying to connect but it can't ) So, I wonder to know is there any way to create or configure a network (using some access point or something else) based on WPA2 Personal security that accepts any WPA2-PSK passwords ? Or is there any other solution for this problem ? If no, is there anyway to see what password this module using to connect to that network ? ( If yes, then I can change password of my network to that password and access to this module's admin panel ) I tried create an open network ( without any security key ) but my module just searches for WPA2 based networks ( I think ).

This means that if the cursor is at the end of the string "cd /dir1/dir2/dir3" and you hit Ctrl + W you will be left with "cd ". Is there a Bash shortcut (custom defined is okay) that will leave me with "cd /dir1/dir2/"?

  • touch pad randomly stopped working on ubuntu desktop

    Question: What steps can I take to make a touchpad that once worked, work again. Info: I'm running ubuntu desktop on my net book. it has been working more or less fine. There have been some minor issues. but nothing to bad. recently I was messing around with burning a mandriva .iso, and suddenly my touch pad just stops working. every now and then it will work for a brief moment after I bring back from sleep mode. The computer says that there is a touch pad and that it is active. any tips?

  • Personal VPN Solutions

    I want to set up a VPN for my laptop to connect back at home so that I don't have to directly expose my desktop computer to the internet. Here is what I have: Internet -> DD-WRT v24sp1-mega -> Desktop PC w/ Windows 7 Ultimate -> MacBook w/ OSX 10.6 What would be the easiest thing to do? DD-WRT has PPTP and OpenVPN built in and Windows 7 has RRAS itself but thus far I've run into some problems. Are there any other alternatives, or suggestions on getting these to work? PPTP I tried setting up PPTP directly on DD-WRT using these directions. When I tried connecting using my external IP from the MacBook I just kept getting that the remote server did not respond. OpenVPN According to the instructions here I don't have enough open nvram to set up OpenVPN. RRAS I got RRAS set up without a problem and can connect from the MacBook to the Windows 7 box while I'm on the same network. I port forwarded 1723 on the DD-WRT back to the Windows 7 box and made sure that PPTP Passthrough was enabled. Again, like PPTP, it just kept timing out.

Whenever I configure a virtual host in the default folder, it works, however when I configure the virtual host in my home directory I get a "403 Forbidden" error. How do I configure a vhost in my home directory?     Hello, I just enabled some Gmail Labs programs in my Gmail account, and then I noticed the orange triangle icon with an exclamation mark in it at the end of the address bar of my Google Chrome browser. Clicking on it brought forth a "Security Information' dialog box, with the following messages: "--mail.google.com The identity of website has been verified by Thawlte SGC CA. --Your connection to mail.google.com is encrypted with 128-bit encryption. However, this page includes other resources which are not secure. These resources can be viewed by others while in transit, and can be modified by an attacker to change the look or behavior of the page." I then logged into two of my other Gmail accounts, one of which has no Gmail Labs programs enabled, and the other with 1 program enabled quite some time ago, both with the same result as above (i.e., with the appearance of the orange triangle warning sign in the address bar). I don't remember seeing the orange triangle before, but I'm not sure if it has ever appeared or not. I have "Always use https" enabled for my Gmail accounts. My questions are: Is there a way to identify and remove these un-secure "resources"? (Could enabling Gmail Labs programs have brought these on?) Meanwhile, are my Gmail accounts compromised and unsafe to use? If so, what should I being doing about that now? After this problem is solved, would I need to reset the password to my Gmail accounts, and/or take any other measures to restore their security? Many thanks for answering my questions!

  • Windows XP SP3 Keyboard stops working

    Here's the strangest thing I have yet to see in 20+ yrs of computer repairs. My in-laws Windowsx XP SP3 has stopped recognizing keyboards. The keyboards work fine in the BIOS, during the boot select process to boot normally, etc. but once Windows comes up it will not recognize any USB keyboard. The USB mouse works fine, have tried different USB ports, different keyboards, etc. nothing works. I can log into the machine via VNC and use the remote keyboard just fine, but not connected locally. Tried a system restore, it says nothing changed. I am about to just re-install Windoze at this point, except I am afraid it will happen again. I have googled for this and it is not unheard of, but I have not found any solution other than nuking it. Anyone have any ideas? I have re-installed the USB drivers for the M/B. Gone into devices and deleted them for a re-install, etc. Keyboard works off a Linux live boot CD, and in the BIOS setup so it is not a hardware issue, and I have tried a few keyboards all of which I know are good and work fine on other systems.

  • Why does my motherboard go through an endless reboot cycle when 8 GB of memory is attempted vs 6 GB?

    I never got an answer in my googling to this about a year ago and have an extra stick of memory I'd like to be able to use. When is inserted the computer starts, and then reboots immediately in an endless reboot cycle. As soon as the 4th stick is removed, the computer works fine. Right now I have 6 GB of my 8 GB installed. Is there a solution that I am missing to enabling this motherboard to actually boot up with all 8 GB (it supports it). Right now it won't even boot up to BIOS with the 4 sticks... only 3?   • Rsync: how to mount truecrypt on-the-fly on the receiving side?

    The short version: how can I keep an rsync backup on a truecrypt volume? The hard part is to mount/unmount this volume on the fly when it is needed for rsync. Details This is my current backup configuration (which works fairly well for the most part): backup source is on Win7 64 bit, destination is a remote Linux box (Debian) actual data transfer is done by rsync via ssh (cwRsync with cygwin) rsync daemon is started on demand via ssh On the Linux box the backup is protected by file permissions only. I want to increase security here and put the backup into a truecrypt volume. I can fuse-mount that volume manually in the shell. The question is now how can I make rsync not only open an ssh connection and starting the rsync daemon, but also to mount the truecrypt volume before (and unmount it after)? My money is on option --rsync-path which can be used to pass a command line to ssh - provided that stdin and stdout still work the same. I guess that command would have to be a shell script. Is this possible, and what would the script look like? For reference, here's a quote of that option: --rsync-path=PROGRAM Use this to specify what program is to be run on the remote machine to start-up rsync. Often used when rsync is not in the default remote-shell's path (e.g. --rsync-path=/usr/local/bin/rsync). Note that PROGRAM is run with the help of a shell, so it can be any program, script, or command sequence you'd care to run, so long as it does not corrupt the standard-in & standard-out that rsync is using to communicate. One tricky example is to set a different default directory on the remote machine for use with the --relative option. For instance: rsync -avR --rsync-path="cd /a/b && rsync" host:c/d /e/ This is the full rsync man page. Truecrypt volume auto-mount Solved! Turns out this option is actually key to auto-mounting the truecrypt volume on the remote side. Not sure if the following makes sense to anyone but I give it a try... Right now I am unmounting (truecrypt -d), then mounting again, then continuing with rsync. At this time rsync needs to do its thing but I dont know when its done. Adding ... rsync && truecrypt -d to the command line does not work because then the rsync daemon does not start. This is because rsync starts the daemon with parameter --server on the remote side and that parameter would go to the final truecrypt -d.

    When I convert an EXR file sequence with x264 using FFmpeg and convert the colorspace from linear to SRGB (with gamma 0.45454545) I get some heavy banding issues (most visible on a dark gradient). Here are the main things that I will be using the Mac Mini for. git Repositories (via Gitosis) build server (build projects in git repositories using commit hooks and run tests) simple websites (PHP) learning C++ in a non-Windows environment What distribution would you recommend? Please provide some detail in your answer so that I can make an meaningful decision. Because I am looking to use the mini as more of a server than a normal desktop machine I was thinking of Ubuntu Server, I'm not sure if that is over kill though given the hardware I am using.

    I want to have several machines set up as digital signage displays and pull media (.pptx, video, images etc) from a centralized place. This is easy enough, but what I really need help doing is managing which extenders play specific media and the schedule from a Windows 7 x64 client hopefully within Media Center but I'm open to another management app. Is it possible to dictate the time and location each media is pushed to? I can use either a full machine running a full Win7 OS or a simple MC extender.
