• Should I trust Redis for data integrity?

  In my current project, I have PostgreSQL as my master DB, and Redis as kind of a slave, e.g., when some user adds another as a friend, first the relationship will be stored in PostgreSQL and then a friend list in Redis will be updated. When some user's friend list is requested, it will be pulled out of Redis instead of PostgreSQL. The question is: when I update the friend list in Redis, should I get a fresh copy outof PostgreSQL, and replace the old list in Redis with the new one or should I keep the old list and simply SADD the userid into the list? The latter is of course best for performance, but intuitively the former does a better job in keep the data integrity? And if something like Celery is used, is the second method worth the risk?

• In Delphi 7, why can I assign a value to a const?

  I copied some Delphi code from one project to another, and found that it doesn't compile in the new project, though it did in the old one. The code looks something like this: procedure TForm1.CalculateGP(..) const Price : money = 0; begin ... Price := 1.0; ... end; So in the new project, Delphi complains that "left side cannot be assigned to" - understandable! But this code compiles in the old project. So my question is, why? Is there a compiler switch to allow consts to be reassigned? How does that even work? I thought consts were replaced by their values at compile time?

• Deploy maven generated site on Google Code svn?

  Using a google code svn as a basic maven repository is easy. However, using mvn site:deploy efficiently on google code seems hard. So far, I found only these solutions: * Deploy to a local file:/// and use a PERL script to delete the old and copy the new * Use wagen-svn to deploy. This is very slow (hours!) and does not delete old files * Plus all mime-types are wrong I am looking for a solution that allows new developers in my projects to check out the current source and just use it, without requiring to install PERL or learn weird steps to perform or wait hours.

• Why is Read-Modify-Write necessary for registers on embedded systems?

  I was reading http://embeddedgurus.com/embedded-bridge/2010/03/different-bit-types-in-different-registers/, which said: With read/write bits, firmware sets and clears bits when needed. It typically first reads the register, modifies the desired bit, then writes the modified value back out and I have run into that consrtuct while maintaining some production code coded by old salt embedded guys here. I don't understand why this is necessary. When I want to set/clear a bit, I always just or/nand with a bitmask. To my mind, this solves any threadsafe problems, since I assume setting (either by assignment or oring with a mask) a register only takes one cycle. On the other hand, if you first read the register, then modify, then write, an interrupt happening between the read and write may result in writing an old value to the register. So why read-modify-write? Is it still necessary?

• How do I merge a local branch into TFS

  hi, I did a stupid thing and branched my project on my local disk instead of doing it on the TFS. So now I have two projects on my disk: the old one which has TFS bindings and the new, which doesn't. I want to merge those changes back into the TFS project. How would I go about doing that? I can't do Compare because my local branch has no TFS bindings. There should be some way to compare the differences between the two projects locally and then meld the differences into the old project and check-in, but I can't find an easy way of doing that. Any other solutions?

• Restoring web session in struts2

  Hi, I have a classical scenario of a website and payment gateway integration, where the request for payment is sent to payment processor, and the payment processor calls back my application once it's done with some parameters I passed to it in the original request. Among parameters, we pass jsessionid and we expect that when the remote server makes request to our server (via customer browser redirect to our server) that the session will be the same as the session used to send the initial payment request. This does not happen, we have two different sessions, although the payment processor includes our original jsessionid in the request to us (https://blabla/?jsessionid=something). How should we go about recreating a session in struts2, in the only thing that connects the 'OLD' and 'NEW' session is the jsessionid in the request URL? Any ideas? Is this possible at all or is the 'OLD' session data deleted when the user moves away from our server onto a completely different domain of a payment processor with their data-entry form? This would explain our innability to recreate the session. Thanks a lot for your replies.

• What ways are there for cleaning an R environment from objects?

  I know I can use ls() and rm() to see and remove objects that exist in my environment. However, when dealing with "old" .RData file, one needs to sometimes pick an environment a part to find what to keep and what to leave out. What I would like to do, is to have a GUI like interface to allow me to see the objects, sort them (for example, by there size), and remove the ones I don't need (for example, by a check-box interface). Since I imagine such a system is not currently implemented in R, what ways do exist? What do you use for cleaning old .RData files? Thanks, Tal

  To support Window Vista in my game, I have changed were the save files are placed (From under Program Files to My Documents) for both XP and Vista installations. Now I would like to be able to move the current XP users save games from the old location to the new location.   Theres a war brewing I can feel it! Old school coders are used to having every server control create events in the .cs files.. for example.. Getting the Initial load of data, Saving Data, Deleting data... and then binding datasources to the server control.. New school coders want to do it in Jquery + AJAX calls to .svc files... That gives automatic no post backs so that is a advantage... and I think its a different way of thinking.. All of a sudden the UI related events are all being done in Jquery.. What is the most modern and efficient way to go ? How can I convince the old school coders to let us you this new paradigm ? (assuming it is the better way)

• Is being a programmer a younger person's job?

  After you get old, say past 30 or 40. Can you still keep up with the young coders from your company, those fresh out of school, who can code for 15+ hours on 10 cans of redbulls (most people in Google, Facebook, etc) ? And given the lightning speed with which today's programming frameworks and architectures evolve, can you keep up with the most up to date stuff and be as proficient at them as the next college grad? I know for jobs like unix/c/embedded programming, it might be that the older the better. But for programming jobs in say web development, social media, search engine technology, etc. Do you become less and less competitive career-wise versus youngsters? For example, most coders in Google and Facebook, I believe are under 25 years old. In other words, once you reach a certain age, would it be unwise to continue to be a coder, and is it better to try becoming a project manager or architect?

• Syncronize an SVN repo (svnsync) with encoding errors

  Is it possible to fix/bypass non-UTF8 encoded svn:log records when syncronizing repositories with svnsync? Background I'm in the process of taking over the maintenance of an open source module that is stored within a large (well over 10,000 revisions) subversion (1.5.5) repository. I do not have admin access to the remote repository to dump/filter/load the module. The old repository is being discontinued and I am trying to sync the original sub module to my local (1.6+) repository with svnsync. For example: svnsync file://home/svn/temp-repo/ http://path.to.repo/modulename/ The problem is that the old repository didn't enforce UTF8 encoding and I'm hitting errors like: svnsync: Cannot accept 'svn:log' property because it is not encoded in UTF-8 I can't modify the log property in the source repository so I need to somehow modify or ignore the property value when the encoding is unknown/invalid. Any ideas? For example, is it possible to write a pre-revprop-change script to modify the log property in transit?

  I have a class which is being operated on by two functions. One function creates a list of widgets and writes it into the class: def updateWidgets(self): widgets = self.generateWidgetList() self.widgets = widgets the other function deals with the widgets in some way: def workOnWidgets(self): for widget in self.widgets: self.workOnWidget(widget) each of these functions runs in it's own thread. the question is, what happens if the updateWidgets() thread executes while the workOnWidgets() thread is running? I am assuming that the iterator created as part of the for...in loop will keep some kind of reference to the old self.widgets object? So I will finish iterating over the old list... but I'd love to know for sure.

• Eclipse doesn't see my new junit test

  I'm using eclipse to run the tests in a single junit(4) test class. The tests in the class all run just fine. Then I add an additional test and run the class through the test running in ecplise again. Only the old tests are run. The new test isn't seen by eclipse. There's no error or anything, it's just as if eclipse is looking at an old version of the test. If I run the tests using maven, everything works fine. Additionally, after I run the tests in maven, ecplipse can see and run the new test correctly. Any ideas what's going on? Any ideas how to get ecplipse's test runner to see my new test cases?

• Using install_name_tool what's going wrong?

  I'm trying to change the install path of a dylib after it has been build. I use "otool -L" to check what the current path is. And then I do: $ install_name_tool -change /my/current/path/libmine.dylib /my/new/path/libmine.dylib libmine.dylib I don't get an error, but nothing changes. If I check the path again the old one is still there. Also the new path is a lot shorter then the old one, so no problem there, and I think the lib is even compiled with extra flag for more filepath space. Any ideas?

  I have a game loop like this: #The velocity of the object velocity_x = 0.09 velocity_y = 0.03 #If the location of the object is over 5, bounce off. if loc_x > 5: velocity_x = (velocity_x * -1) if loc_y > 5: velocity_y = (velocity_y * -1) #Every frame set the object's position to the old position plus the velocity obj.setPosition([(loc_x + velocity_x),(loc_y + velocity_y),0]) Basically, my problem is that in the if loops, I change the variable from its original value to the inverse of its old value. But because I declare the variable's value at the beginning of the script, the velocity variables don't stay on what I change it to. I need a way to change the variable's value permanently. For example, you can add a method (with a default implementation) to an abstract class without breaking old implementations of the class". What does it mean (especially what means "breaking old implementations of the class")? Appreciate if anyone could show me a sample why from this perspective abstract class is better than interface? thanks in advance, George

• Clickonce program will not start when launched from shell_execute

  I have a very old program that I have no control over. It launches a filetype with its default application like this(I cannot modify this code): LET Err (SHELL_EXECUTE 'open' (FIX_MESG '"{1}"' File_name) '' '') ^^The above code works, so long as that filetype isn't associated with ClickOnce. The old program is 32 bit, the OS is Windows 7 64 bit. I can compile my clickonce program as anything, but none seem to work. (I've tried x84, x64 and anyCPU) How can I make a 32 bit program use shell execute to launch a ClickOnce program on a 64bit OS?

• SED, using variables and in with an array

  What I am trying to do is run the sed on multiple files in the directory Server_Upload, using variables: AB${count} Corresponds, to some variables I made that look like: echo " AB1 = 2010-10-09Three " echo " AB2 = 2009-3-09Foo " echo " AB3 = Bar " And these correspond to each line which contains a word in master.ta, that needs changing in all the text files in Server_Upload. • How many parameters in C# method are acceptable?

  I am new to C# and have to maintain a C# Application. Now I'v found a method vaving 32 Parameters (not auto-generated code). From C/C++ I remember the rule of thumb "4 Parameters". It may be an old-fashioned rule rooting back to old 0x86 compilers, where 4 Parameters could be accomodated in registers (fast) or on stack otherwise. I am not concerning about performance, but I do have a feeling, that 32 parameters per functions are not easy to maintain even in C#. Or am I completly not up to date? What is the rule of thumb for C#? Thank you for any hint!

  I have a table with User data such as name, address etc and another table which has a paragraph of text about the user. The reason that they are separate is because we need to record all the old about data. So if the user changes their paragraph - the old one should still be stored. Each bit of about data has a primary key aboutMeID. What I want to do is have a join that pulls their name, address etc and the latest bit of aboutMe data from the other table. I am not sure though how I can order the join to only get the latest about me data. Can someone help?

• c# - clear surface when resizing

  Hello, I'm trying to build my own custom control for a windows forms application in C#.Net. Currently I paint some rectangles and other graphic elements using the paint event. When I now resize the app form to fit the desktop size, all elements are repainted (which is exactly the behaviour I need) but the old one's are shown in the background. Here's what I'm doing by now: Pen penDefaultBorder = new Pen(Color.Wheat, 1); int margin = 5; private void CustomControl_Paint(object sender, PaintEventArgs e) { CustomControl calendar = (CustomControl)sender; Graphics graphics = e.Graphics; graphics.Clear(Color.WhiteSmoke); graphics.DrawRectangle(penDefaultBorder, margin, margin, calendar.Width - margin * 2, calendar.Height - margin * 2); //... } Neither the graphics.Clear, nor adding a graphics.FillRectangle(...) will hide the old rectangle from the surface.   When a user signs up the system has to check that they are old enough to do so, in this example they have to be atleast 8 years old $minAge = strtotime(date("d")."-".date("m")."-".(date("Y")-8)); $dob = strtotime($day."-".$month."-".$year); $minAge = 01-03-2004, $dob = 01-02-2011 I basically need to make sure this person was born before 2004 but I want to know whether I have to convert the timestamps to do a comparison or whether there is a more efficient way.
