QUestion is How do i detect these attacks? is there any light-weight software available? which can monitor the server? Note I am running this on a VPS so the monitor program will have to run on the same server.

  I need a command line tool that adjusts the time of a Windows 2008 server, using an internet clock. The purpose is to adjust the time in a script, when other apps from that script are not running. It is not an option to use the built-in NTP service because that makes some apps on this server fail - note, that this server is used in an industrial environment with no PCs on the network and no Windows update or similar applied. Any idea, anyone?

• Family server setup [closed]

  Hi all, I really hope some of you can give me some direction. I have setup a linux server at home and through samba I can access files from different computers in my home. I would like to use this server as a file-server for my family (brothers, sisters and parents who all live in their own homes). I really like the way it is set up right now with user and permission controls, but I've read that it is bad idea to open up the samba port to the world. The requirements are simple: 1) it should be easy to access, by using standard web browsers or mounting the drive (shouldn't have to use any VPN setup or use putty etc) 2) should be somewhat secure. We just want to share family pictures instead of putting them on facebook or picasa or other web server, nothing top secret. Here is what I've looked into: 1)Webdav. It seems decent but seems like it windows7 doesn't like it very much, even with digest mode authentication. User controls and permissions are not as flexible as samba (or at least to my knowledge). I really like the user and group permissions in samba, but if I could live with webdav if it worked seamlessly with windows, it should just work shouldn't it? 2) I read somewhere to stay away from ftp as it is outdated and that there are newer and better internet file-server setups? Was that a reference to webdav? I am so confused, please help... Manny

• How to check if a server runs in pressing mode

  Hi there, Layout: i have at customer side a server (win2003 R2 SP2 standard edition 32-bit) with a sql-server 2005 and some databases. This system starts with the /3GB-Switch. The system reports 3.25 GB RAM and taskmanager reports the process of sqlserver.exe with 2758255 K as the process with the highest consumption. The OS separates RAM for applications and for itself, normaly 50:50. But here we have the /3GB-Switch aktivated and i think the part for the applications is more than 50% of RAM. Knowledge (or better not knowledge): Somebody told me that if the OS runs out of memory within his part of RAM, the server runs into pressing mode. Questions: What is this pressing mode? Is pressing mode possible at all in this szenario? What should be done to get more performance out of this sql-server, beside optimizing the database and all this stuff.

• No write access on Windows 2008 workgroup share

  Hi All, I'm trying to access network shares on my new Windows 2008 server (workgroup) using my server's local admin account. I can read files but not modify them. Permissions (sharing + file system) say: Users = Read only. Admins = Full Control. Even though I connect using my admin account (net use x: \\server\share /user:server\me), I can't write. OTOH, I have another share on the same computer where users have Read AND Write. I can write into that one. What's the problem? Does it have to do with UAC? TIA for your help.

• Windows Server 2008 ignores any change made to firewall

  I have been trying for the last 2 hours to make my Windows Server 2008 answer ping. I have tried almost every single solution I have found on the web, so far nothing work. My current setup: 2 NIC (1x Internet connection, 1x Local network) Server act as VPN server. So I set the corresponding NIC as either Public or Private. I also enable the rule for "File and Printer Sharing (Echo Request...)" for all Nic and from any IPs. I always been able to ping from the local network or the local ip while connected to the VPN. I also tried to create a specific rule for ICMP ping and disabling the firewall for all but the public nic. Regardless of all this, I still can't ping that server from Internet. Any idea suggestion what could cause this? I have the impression that when you set the server as VPN (I switch the box on when setting it up to block everything else than VPN connection) that changing anything to the firewall setting thought mmc is pointless !?!?

  Microsoft released an update for Windows 7 today (Tuesday, April 27, 2010): KB980408: The April 2010 stability and reliability update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 is available. The update fixes, among other things: Windows Explorer may stop responding for 30 seconds when a file or a directory is created or renamed after certain applications are installed. i'm not experiencing it on my own Windows 7 machine, but two colleagues at work were experiencing the problem. i would really like to know what applications were causing problems. Microsoft will never call out the misbehaving applications. i want to know what software i should be ridiculing and insulting. And avoid in the future. Did anyone who was experiencing this problem isolate the applications?

  My SQL Server Windows service is set to use the NETWORK SERVICE account. The server is installed to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL. However looking at the permissions on that folder, NETWORK SERVICE does not have any permissions. The groups which are allowed access to that folder are... CREATOR OWNER - who is this? SYSTEM - sounds fine - so that Windows can access the folder I presume? SQLServerMSSQLUser$Computer_Name$MSSQLSERVER - this is the interesting one - what is this? Administrators Users If NETWORK SERVICE is a user with minimal permissions on the system and looks to the O/S as someone connecting from a network how does it have permissions to access any files in the SQL Server install folder? Regardless if I open my C: drive, I have bunch of folders with names which sound something like this:2d51a0107296557123f92939e121 I can not delete those and I they are occupying more and more space on my PC everyday and I am not sure how to get rid with those since when I try to delete them manually, system just does not let me do it and throws security exception on my face.

• Converting a Windows 2003 server

  We have a legacy database system based upon MS SQL running on Windows Server 2003. The client software will only run on Windows XP. We have recently had success converting a client into a virtual machine and running it under Fusion on Mac minis. So far, it is working incredibly well. So well, in fact, that we are now considering trying to convert the server to a virtual machine. This raises several questions, though: 1. The server uses a raid array. Does the VM virtualize the raid array? I only ask because in my experience Windows products don't like it when you change core hardware. 2. Is there any reason why running SQL server on a virtual machine won't work? It will be up 24/7. 3. Is there a different converter for servers? 4. Will I have to track down the licensing for MS SQL and Server 2003 or will they come across ok? 5. The company that designed the software is no longer in business. There is some fear that the software is somehow tied to the hardware configuration. We bought the hardware, but their engineers came out and configured the system. Will the virtual machine be able to spoof particular chip sets? Thanks! Jim Bass

  Hello, I have some work to do in a small office. This office has two separate Internet connections. One is a kind of DSL line and connected through the Internet sharing router (DHCP). One is a leased line with public IP adresses (No DHCP). This leased line provide only 30 IP addresses and the gateway is provided by the ISP. Some workers use private IP provided by the router, some workers use manually setup public IP. There is a Windows 2008 R2 server with two NICs, connected to each lines. I want to connect/merge(?)/bridge(?) two subnet with this server so that users from the different subnet can access each other. How can I accomplish this? Something like, add gateway function to this server and public IP users change the gateway to point this server.. It it possible ? Sorry for my rambling. Thanks in advance.

• Ping issues with Windows Server 2008 R2 with mail server!

  For some reason I can ping all servers in my network except for the mail server and the mail server can ping all servers except the windows server 2008 R2. The firewall has been disabled and still it doesn't respond. The weird part is that every once in a while it will all of a sudden start allowing pings and then just as suddenly stop allowing pings. I've made sure there's no type-o's in the ip address or subnet mask or gateway. Any other ideas?

• Windows 7 blocks network access to network-installed apps

  Windows 2008 R2 domain. Users, running Windows 7 Enterprise, are trying to run some software from a network share. Specifically, I've tested this with MATLAB and PuTTY. When starting, MATLAB has to contact a licensing server to get its license. This action fails for regular users when they start MATLAB from the network share. However, if they copy the installation directory to a local disk everything works fine. Running MATLAB as an admin user from the network share also works. Same story with PuTTY. If the executable is launched from the share, regular users cannot connect to any servers. Something is blocking network communications for programs that are launched from a network drive. Every reference I've found online for doing this is using older versions of SQL Server, and the driver that they tell you to use 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0', is not present in 2012 from what I can tell. • Display issue with fresh install of windows server 2012

  I installed windows server 2012 last night on my home "server". I use server loosely. From the get go I had display and graphic issues. The image was fuzzy and jumbled up during the install. This continued once booted into the install. I did installed Server 2012 twice now as the first time, I only installed "core". I know this is not a busted graphics card because it worked fine in Win7, during boot, and fine in "core" mode. Once booted into "GUI" install of Server 2012, the image was messed up again. To make things even more weird, the windows "loading" screen looks fine. Once the login screen appears the image is fuzzy and jumbled. My guess was that it was a driver issue. I did try to install the win8 x64 drivers from nvidia. This caused the system to become unbootable and I had to restore to a previous working point and uninstall the driver. I did try two different monitors and cables. Also both ports on the back of the video card. I did manage to get RDP running and that works fine. I rarely work directly on this machine but it would be nice to have the option back. Geforce 210, AMD 4600+, 4 gigs of ram.

  Got a new leased line network to our office that came with a SHDSL router (Watson). Currently, we are unable to use Sql Server management studio to connect to remote Sql databases. It errors out saying A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The specified network name is no longer available.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 64) I logged into the Watson management panel and unblocked all the ports for TCP traffic (specified the range as 0 to 60000 and UDP as well - this include 1443 required for connecting to SQL Server). The router is the only thing that has changed. We are able to connect to it from other networks just fine. Is there something we are missing here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Is there a way to import a scheduled task from windows 2003 (.job) to windows 2008 (.xml)?

  I had some jobs to be moved from the old production server (windows 2003 server standard) to the new machine (windows 2008 server standard), but the new server is unable to read the old .job format, also the import wizard only imports from .xml job files (same version). Obviously I don't want to rebuild all the jobs by hand, but can't find a tool that makes the process a very little easier. I don't trust in Microsoft for this kind of tools, my previously experiences had been to bad (DTS - SSIS). Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• Windows VPN - NO internet access

  I host a network of servers behind a Fortigate 200a firewall in the DC. I connect to those servers via a VPN connection. The problem is that when i connect to the VPN, I lose my internet connection on the local PC (windows 7). I would like to be connected to the VPN and still surf the web. i guess this means to only forward a range of ip to the VPN connection. I've read other answers on serverfault, talking about "un-check the 'Use default gateway on remote network' option in your Windows 7 PPTP network connection settings". When i do that , i get internet access but no access to the servers in the VPN. Any idea how to get both working? Should i change something on the fortigate 200a config? Do i need two networks cards? Is there a place in windows to define ip range for the vpn connection?

• What does SQL Server's BACKUPIO wait type mean?

  I'm using Sql Server 2008 ("R1"), with some maintenance plans that back up my databases to a network share. Some of my backup jobs show long waits of type "BACKUPIO". Of course it seems like this is an I/O subsystem limitation, but I'm skeptical. Perfmon stats for I/O on the production (source) server are well within normal trends for that server. The destination server shows a sustained 7MB/s write rate, which seems incredibly low, even for a slow disk. The network link is gigabit ethernet and nowhere near saturated. The few docs I've turned up about BACKUPIO indicate that it's not specifically a wait on I/O, surprisingly enough. This MSFT doc says it's abnormal unless you're using a tape drive, which I'm not. • How to script printer creation on a Windows Server 2008 R2 clustered print server?

  As per subject. I've found some ways of scripting printer creation on Windows print servers using WMI, but it looks like WMI doesn't support clustered print servers (or clustered servers at all). The scripts in C:\Windows\System32\Printing_Admin_Scripts are useless because, they are not cluster-aware and end up creating the printers on the active cluster node (just like using WMI). The only tool I found that was able to work on a clustered print server is printui.exe (shortcut for rundll32 printui.dll, PrintUIEntry), but it can't create TCP printing ports: it can only add printers if the port already exists. How can I completely script printer creation (including TCP printing ports!) on a clustered Windows Server 2008 R2 print server?
