• How do I deploy a charm from a local repository?

  I am trying to run the Charm tutorial from the juju documentation by creating a new charm from a local repository. I started by installing the charms from bzr to my local ubuntu 12.04 desktop running in a virtual machine. The new file structure is the following: ubuntu@ubuntu-VirtualBox:~$ find charms/precise/drupal/ charms/precise/drupal/ charms/precise/drupal/hooks charms/precise/drupal/hooks/db-relation-changed charms/precise/drupal/hooks/install charms/precise/drupal/hooks/start charms/precise/drupal/hooks/stop charms/precise/drupal/metadata.yml charms/precise/drupal/README When I install the mysql charm, which was downloaded from the remote charm repository, it works fine.   What functionality of an iPad can I use with Ubuntu? I'm thinking about buying an iPad, but I only have Ubuntu PCs these days (no Windows, no Mac), and I'm nervous that it may be too reliant on the existence of iTunes. I'm less concerned about getting media onto and off it (and I have read that I can do this with libimobiledevice), but will I be able to activate it with iTunes? Does it need to be USB synced on a regular basis, or can I do most anything I want through the cloud (i.e. over wifi)? Edit: In answer to jrgifford's question, in theory, I'd like to do everything I would want to do with it were I using Windows/Mac. But more specifically, I think I'd want to: "Activate" it, if that's necessary Copy music / video onto it Install apps How much of this can I do without a Windows/Mac PC? Is it necessary to activate it? I don't think I'm that interested in backing it up (what would I back up?), but then again, maybe I'm confused as to how easy it is to get data on and off. Can I get a regular SFTP app for the iPad to copy data to my Ubuntu machine over wi-fi, for example?

  Version control systems (VCS) like Subversion, Git and the others has been widely adopted and became the must-have tool in any software development project. Source artifacts and checked out, modified, checked in, all the history of changes is tracked by the VCS.  But what if the development tool stores the source/configuration artifacts not in your laptop's hard drive, but in some shared repository instead? Well, we definitely need a way for export/import our artifacts from/to this repository.   Oracle BI Publisher report development approach is based on such a shared repository model (catalog), and starting from BI Publisher 11.1.1.5 Oracle ships Catalog Utility, which can be utilized to export/import the reports from the command line.  To start using the BI Publisher Catalog Utility you should: Go to the file system of the server where BI Publisher binaries has been installed and locate the following file: <MW_HOME>/Oracle_BI1/clients/bipublisher/BIPCatalogUtil.zip Copy the file to your local filesystem and unzip it. I will refer to this unzipped directory as <BIP_CLIENT_DIR> below If you do not want to pass server BI Publisher server URL, username and password during each invocation, modify the corresponding values inside <BIP_CLIENT_DIR>/config/xmlp-client-config.xml Open the terminal window and go to <BIP_CLIENT_DIR>/bin Make sure that the following environment variables are set: JAVA_HOME, ORACLE_HOME Now it's time to run the utility: if you are on Linux - just run BIPCatalogUtil.sh and pass the parameters according to the utility documentation if you are on MS Windows the bad news are that the command script for MS Windows is missing, and support.oracle.com note 1333726.1 says that a temporary solution is "create a .cmd file by setting up a classpath and copying the same commands from the .sh script". • Search SSIS packages for table/column references

  A lot of companies now use TFS or some other system and keep all their packages in a single project. This means that a copy of all the packages will end up on your local disk. There is major failing with SSIS that it is sometimes quite difficult to find what a package is actually doing, what it accesses and what it affects. This is a simple dos script which will search through all packages in a folder for a string and write the names of found packages to an output file. Just copy the text to a .bat file (I use aaSearch.bat) in the folder with all the package scripts Change the output filename (twice), change the find string value and run it in a dos window. • BizTalk and SQL: Alternatives to the SQL receive adapter. Using Msmq to receive SQL data

  If we have to get data from the SQL database, the standard way is to use a receive port with SQL adapter. SQL receive adapter is a solicit-response adapter. It periodically polls the SQL database with queries. That’s only way it can work. Sometimes it is undesirable. With new WCF-SQL adapter we can use the lightweight approach but still with the same principle, the WCF-SQL adapter periodically solicits the database with queries to check for the new records. Imagine the situation when the new records can appear in very broad time limits, some - in a second interval, others - in the several minutes interval. Our requirement is to process the new records ASAP. That means the polling interval should be near the shortest interval between the new records, a second interval. As a result the most of the poll queries would return nothing and would load the database without good reason. If the database is working under heavy payload, it is very undesirable. Do we have other choices? Sure. We can change the polling to the “eventing”. The good news is the SQL server could issue the event in case of new records with triggers. Got a new record –the trigger event is fired. No new records – no the trigger events – no excessive load to the database. The bad news is the SQL Server doesn’t have intrinsic methods to send the event data outside. For example, we would rather use the adapters that do listen for the data and do not solicit. There are several such adapters-listeners as File, Ftp, SOAP, WCF, and Msmq. But the SQL Server doesn’t have methods to create and save files, to consume the Web-services, to create and send messages in the queue, does it? Can we use the File, FTP, Msmq, WCF adapters to get data from SQL code? Yes, we can. The SQL Server 2005 and 2008 have the possibility to use .NET code inside SQL code. See the SQL Integration. How it works for the Msmq, for example: ·         New record is created, trigger is fired ·         Trigger calls the CLR stored procedure and passes the message parameters to it ·         The CLR stored procedure creates message and sends it to the outgoing queue in the SQL Server computer. ·         Msmq service transfers message to the queue in the BizTalk Server computer. ·         WCF-NetMsmq adapter receives the message from this queue. For the File adapter the idea is the same, the CLR stored procedure creates and stores the file with message, and then the File adapter picks up this file. Using WCF-NetMsmq adapter to get data from SQL I am describing the full set of the deployment and development steps for the case with the WCF-NetMsmq adapter. Development: 1.       Create the .NET code: project, class and method to create and send the message to the MSMQ queue. 2.       Create the SQL code in triggers to call the .NET code. Installation and Deployment: 1.       SQL Server: a.       Register the CLR assembly with .NET (CLR) code b.      Install the MSMQ Services 2.       BizTalk Server: a.       Install the MSMQ Services b.      Create the MSMQ queue c.       Create the WCF-NetMsmq receive port. On the BizTalk Server Installing the MSMQ Services The same is as for the SQL Server. Creating the MSMQ queue 1.       Start / Administrative Tools / Computer Management, on the left pane open the “Services and Applications”, open the “Message Queuing”, and open the “Private Queues”. 2.       Right-click the “Private Queues”; choose New; choose “Private Queue”. 3.       Type the Queue name as ’myapp.myqueue'; check the “Transactional” option. Creating the WCF-NetMsmq receive port I will not go through this step in all details. It is straightforward. URI for this receive location should be 'net.msmq://localhost/private/myapp.myqueue'. Notes ·         The biggest problem is usually on the step the “Registering the CLR assembly”. It is hard to predict where are the assemblies from the assembly list, what version should be used, x86 or x64. It is pity of such “rude” integration of the SQL with .NET. ·         In couple cases the new WCF-NetMsmq port was not able to work with the queue. Try to replace the WCF- NetMsmq port with the WCF-Custom port with netMsmqBinding. It was working fine for me. ·         To test how messages go through the queue you can turn on the Journal /Enabled option for the queue. I used the QueueExplorer utility to look to the messages in Journal. The Computer Management can also show the messages but it shows only small part of the message body and in the weird format. The QueueExplorer can do the better job; it shows the whole body and Xml messages are in good color format.

• Java Not Recognized As Default Application

  I just installed java according to this article, and 'java -version' displays java version "1.7.0_07" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_07-b10) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.3-b01, mixed mode) 'update-alternatives --config java' returns this: There are 2 choices for the alternative java (providing /usr/bin/java). Selection Path Priority Status ------------------------------------------------------------ 0 /usr/bin/gij-4.6 1046 auto mode 1 /usr/bin/gij-4.6 1046 manual mode * 2 /usr/local/java/jdk1.7.0_07/bin/java 1 manual mode Press enter to keep the current choice[*], or type selection number: with update-alternatives --config javac (or javaws) returning similarly. however java isn't listed in the default applications menu when I click on a .jar file and go to "open with application". I tried to install java this way, and on the update-alternatives part of the command returned me: /etc/alternatives/[java,javac,javaws] is dangling, it will be updated with best choice I just confirmed that I can use java, as 'java -jar file.jar' does work. Just figured that I'd mention it, don't know why I didn't before, but when I right click on a .jar file, java 7 run-time isn't even listed there, it seems that the file-manager isn't recognizing it as a program, but it is there, and it does work...

• How to restore curropted installation?

  I have a laptop with dead battery that when there is no current connected to it turns critical so fast and in the energy management in ubuntu, when the battery is critical, there are 2 options: shutdown and hibernate witch is in grey (unclickable), so I have no choice but to chose immediate shutdown, there is no standby even if it is an option in the screen behavior. • What to include in metadata?

  I'm wondering if there are any general guidelines or best practices regarding when to split data into a metadata format, as oppose to directly embedding it within the data. (Specific example below). My understanding of metadata is that it describes data (without the need to actually look at the data), allowing for data to be quickly search/filtered for easy access. Let's take for example a simple 3D model format. The actual data file itself is a binary file containing vertices and colors. Things like creation date, modified data and author name would be things that describe the binary data, so I would say these belong as metadata (outside of the binary file). But what if the application had no need to search or filter by these fields? Would it be acceptable to embed these fields directly into the binary data itself? Could they be duplicated in both the binary data and the meta data, or would this be considered bad practice? What about more ambiguous fields such as the model name, which could be considered part of the data itself, but also as data describing the binary data?... How do you decide which data to embed in the actual binary file, as opposed to separating into a more flexible metadata format? Thanks!

  I said I would tackle documenting some of the new features in the 10.1.3.4.1 roll up patch I mentioned last week. With the patch you can now set the default state of bookmarks (if you create them) in your PDF outputs. If your users prefer to see them all collapsed to the base level or may be collapsed to the second level to ease navigation; whatever they need. Its another opportunity for you to look like a star! You of course need to start with a table of contents; then add the convert|copy to bookmarks command. You can then add the new collapse command to set the appropriate level in the bookmarks. <?copy-to-bookmark:?> <?collapse-bookmark:show;2?> <<< Table of Contents >>> <?end convert-to-bookmark?> The command allows you to expand or collapse the bookmarks as you need. Of course you will know how many levels you will have in the final output document. • Customizing the NUnit GUI for data-driven testing

  My test project consists of a set of input data files which is fed into a piece of legacy third-party software. Since the input data files for this software are difficult to construct (not something that can be done intentionally), I am not going to add new input data files. Each input data file will be subject to a set of "test functions". Some of the test functions can be invoked independently. Other test functions represent the stages of a sequential operation - if an earlier stage fails, the subsequent stages do not need to be executed. I have experimented with the NUnit parametrized test case (TestCaseAttribute and TestCaseSourceAttribute), passing in the list of data files as test cases. I am generally satisfied with the the ability to select the input data for testing. However, I would like to see if it is possible to customize its GUI's tree structure, so that the "test functions" become the children of the "input data".   Today I got some help from Jaroslav Havlin, the creator of the new "Search in Projects API". Below are the steps to create a search provider that finds recently modified files, via a new tab in the "Find in Projects" dialog: Here's how to get to the above result. Create a new NetBeans module project named "RecentlyModifiedFilesSearch". Then set dependencies on these libraries: Search in Projects API Lookup API Utilities API Dialogs API Datasystems API File System API Nodes API Create and register an implementation of "SearchProvider". This class tells the application the name of the provider and how it can be used. It should be registered via the @ServiceProvider annotation.Methods to implement: Method createPresenter creates a new object that is added to the "Find in Projects" dialog when it is opened. Method isReplaceSupported should return true if this provider support replacing, not only searching. If you want to disable the search provider (e.g., there aren't required external tools available in the OS), return false from isEnabled. • An alternative to a video codec for storing motion changes [on hold]

  I have a 3 dimensional byte array. The 3-d array represents a jpeg image. Each channel/array represents part of the RGB spectrum. I am not interested in retaining black pixels. A black pixel is represented by this atypical arrangement: myarray[0,0,0] =0; myarray[0,0,1] =0; myarray[0,0,2] =0; So, I have flattened this 3d array out to a 1d array by doing this byte[] AFlatArray = new byte[width x height x 3] and then assigning values respective to the coordinate. But like I said I do not want black pixels. So this array has to only contain color pixels with the x,y coordinate. The result I want is to re-represent the image from the i dimension byte array that only contains non-black pixels. How do I do that? It looks like I have to store black pixels as well because of the xy coordinate system. I have tried writing to a binary file but the size of that file is greater than the jpeg file as the jpeg file is compressed. I am using c#.

• How can I find unused/unapplied CSS rules in a stylesheet?

  Hello, I've got a huge CSS file and an HTML file. I'd like to find out which rules are not used while displaying a HTML file. Are there tools for this? The CSS file has evolved over few years and from what I know no one has ever removed anything from it--people just wrote new overriding rules again and again. EDIT: It was suggested to use Dust-Me Selectors or Chrome's Web Page Performance tool. But they both work on level of selectors, and not individual rules. I've got lots of cases where a rule inside a selector is always overridden--and this is what I mostly want to get rid of. For example: body { color: white; padding: 10em; } h1 { color: black; } p { color: black; } ... ul { color: black; } All the text in my HTML is inside some wrapper element, so it is never white. body's padding always works, so of course the whole body selector cannot be removed. And I'd like to get rid of such useless rules too. EDIT: And another case of useless rule: when it duplicates existing one without changing anything: a { margin-left: 5px; color: blue; } a:hover { margin-left: 5px; color: red; } I'd happily get rid of the second margin-left... again it seems to me that those tools does not find such things.
