• Mac OSX DHCP Stopped Working [on hold]

  Tethering a Raspberry PI to a MacBook (Mavericks) via ethernet is proving to be a real pain. This worked for about a day. My MacBook required a rare reboot and once it came back up the Pi won't get an address. I've confirmed it's not a problem with the Pi. It's a problem with the MacBook for sure. It's basically just stopped giving out IPs. I've read as much as I've found about how to fix this friggin' problem, but I've thus far come up blank. Internet sharing Wi-fi Ethernet enabled, and/or Edited /etc/bootpd.plist as described here (http://www.jacquesf.com/2011/04/mac-os-x-dhcp-server/ - this worked initially and now no longer does) Pi connected directly to the router has no problems. My MacBook DHCP server will no longer give out addresses. Any help would be much appreciated.

• Upgrading MacBookPro

  I'm using a Late 2011 13" MacBook Pro with an Intel i5 @ 2.4 GHz and 4 GB 1333 MHz ram. The computer has started to get older. I was going to upgrade the ram but since Mavericks come out, the ram problem just went away and now, it started to get slower and slower. So I was thinking of upgrading my ram to at least 8GB and my CPU. I have two question about that. As I have 1333Mhz rams installed by default, the motherboard should not support 1666Mhz rams. But can I use 1666 Mhz ones and if I can will it make any difference? Also is it possible to upgrade the CPU of my computer? If yes how can I find a CPU compatible with the other components?

Both respond numbers 0...9 in every line. In case of first server each number is received every second.   I want to buy a MacBook Air for my wife with a 128GB SSD. She has to use Windows 7 but I would like to keep OS X for myself to use somtimes. Using Bootcamp, is it feasible to install the following? Mac partition: 36GB with Mac OS X and Microsoft Office 2011 Word, Excel & Powerpoint and Skype. (minimal use) Windows partition: 92GB with Windows 7 professional and Microsoft Office 2010 Word, Excel & Powerpoint, and Skype (daily use) Media to be kept on SD card or external USB3 drive. (Note: Using Parrallels may save space, but my wife won't go for the user experience)

• Disable passwd history feature with remember=0

  PAM version - pam-0.79 Is setting 0 allowed on "remember" option in /etc/pam.d/common-passwd file of pam.d module to disable passwd history feature? With "remember=0" in /etc/pam.d/common-passwd file, I am observing a memfault when running the passwd command as a USER. When browsed the source, the function in _set_ctrl in support.c file of pam_unix module handles wrong values of remember, but currently its not robust enough to handle 0, which is a wrong value. So the valid and only option to disable history feature, is to not include the "remember" option in /etc/pam.d/common-passwd file and not to set-up /etc/security/opasswd file?   I just spent the last 10 hours of my life on this & am running in circles, so was hoping someone may be able to help me. I want a specific URL to load like this: http://example.com/f/2011/image.png?attribute=small When a URL in a format such as this hits, I'd like to rewrite it to hit the server as: http://example.com/generate.php?f=2011/image.png&attribute=small Based on above, my question is two-fold: How can I rewrite the URL in htaccess to meet my requirements above? If the original URL didn't have the attribute query string parameter, how can I ensure attribute will be false/blank/etc when it hits the server via htaccess?

If I rename Path to something else, I sometimes get the problem, and sometimes I don't.

• I can access my company mail on iPhone, but not on a PC/Mac

  On my iPhone (4), I can set up my company e-mail, which allows me to receive and send e-mail and use the calender to manage appointments. The company is using Exchange 2003. The problem is that this is the only way I can access my e-mail when I'm not at the office. I've tried setting up an account on Outlook 2007, Outlook 2010, Outlook 2011 (Mac) and the OSX Mail app, but it doesn't work. The server cannot be reached, even though I've used the exact same settings as on the iPhone. The info I use on the iPhone is: Server name of the company mail server (it's the same as for webmail) Use SSL AD Domain of my account My AD account name Password When I enter this on the iPhone, it works like a charm, but whatever I try on one of my desktops, it doesn't work. FYI: I can't ask the company IT guys because according to them, it doesn't work from a remote location, not even on the iPhone (but obviously, that works just fine)

• Using TrueCrypt (software encryption) with an SSD

  I use full drive encryption (FDE) w/ TrueCrypt on my laptop. I have a 2nd gen I7 with AES instruction support, so honestly I can't even notice a speed change on the system with it on. My question, is for those who know about SSD's a lot. I previously (early 2011) read articles about how software encryption will negate the speed benefits that an SSD provides - because of the need for the SSD to send a delete command, then a write command, for every encrypted write - instead of just writing over data like a regular HDD would (or something like this...honestly I can't remember...ha!). Anyway, any improvements in this field? Is it pointless for me to grab an SSD if I'm using FDE? Thanks all.

• emacs does not open a file from argument and syntax highlight does not work

  In my latest ubuntu box, When I type for example emacs ~/.bashrc, Emacs will start but not open .bashrc. This is true for any file I pass in. I've used Emacs for several years, and have never experienced this problem before. I added (global-font-lock-mode 1);; to my .emacs file, and Emacs does recognize it, for example. "(C++/; Abbrev)", but it won't do syntax highlighting. If you can solve any of these problems, it will be very appreciated. • Configuring Windows Server Backup Destination Drive Sets

  Is it possible to set up the standard backup system in SBS 2011 (or Server 2008 R2) to use an internal drive as a destination as well as external drives? Before you say yes, from my tests and from what I've read on the web, backups with internal drives included as a destination always seems to prefer the internal drive over connected external ones. (Regardless of what drive might be marked as 'active'). So no data ever gets written to a plugged in external drive. In my opinion external drives should always have priority over internal drives or including them is pointless.

  I'm on a Mac Mini 2011 with VirtualBox installed. I have Windows 7 running as a Guest OS. My question: How do I "trap" my mouse pointer within Windows? In other words, I don't want my mouse to move outside to the Host OS. Ideally, I would be able to press the Host key to "untrap" my mouse. The purpose: I'm playing Warcraft 3 in the Guest OS and I can't scroll the screen since the mouse keeps jumping to the Host OS instead of scrolling the screen. This happens even in full-screen mode.

  I have followed Cloning an SD card onto a larger SD card to clone a 2G SD card to a 32G SD card, and the file system is ext4. However, on the 32G SD card I only can see 2G space available. Is there a way to maximize it out? • Macbook Air Reboot after Wake when Windows 7 Running in VM

  Is anyone who is running a Windows 7 VM on a new 2011 i5 Macbook Air (I have the 13" w/128 SSD) able to put their Macbook air to sleep for extended periods of time (like overnight) without manually shutting down or suspending a VM that's running in Parallels, VMware Fusion or VirtualBox? I've tried all three virtualization products with no success. With all three, if I forget to manually shutdown or suspend the VM, OSX reboots when I try and wake the Macbook. Same goes if I try and use the Deep Sleep widget. Parallels support openly admitted that this was an issue and thankfully gave me a refund. I've also tried the trial version of VMware and VirtualBox, but the behavior is the same. Should I just give up or is anyone out there having more success at this?

  SSDs have been out for a few years, and have seen all kinds of usage patterns. Windows and Linux support the TRIM command, with Mac OS still trailing behind here. Update (2 Aug 2011): It appears OSX Lion has support for TRIM in Apple-branded SSDs. There is a utility that enables TRIM in non-Apple SSDs I'm sure plenty of Mac users (and pre-TRIM version of Win/Linux) have SSDs. So, to you folks: have you noticed a degradation of SSD performance during its lifetime? How long have you been using the SSD, and how bad is the degradation? I'm assuming that even at its most degraded state, a modern SSD would still smoke a traditional hard drive in terms of performance.

• VirtualBox VRDP server doesn't start on Windows

  I've installed VirtualBox 4.1.8 on a Windows 7 Ultimate host system. I've set up an Arch Linux VM that starts just fine from the VirtualBox GUI. However, when I try to start it with VBoxHeadless --startvm <vm_name> it prints the following Oracle VM VirtualBox Headless Interface 4.1.6 (C) 2008-2011 Oracle Corporation All rights reserved. and then it just sits there. I never get the VRDE server is listening on port 3389 message like when I start a headless VM on a Linux machine. Do I have to configure anything else in order to get the VRDE server to run?

  I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on a remote box. I've managed to log in physically and checked my hosts.allow and hosts.deny but they have no entries. I tried removing and reinstalling OpenSSH, checked authorized_keys and ~/.ssh permissions and tried connecting from other computers only to get the same error. I'm at my wits end, any help would be greatly appreciated.

• MS Excel: Can I link images using a relative path?

  I am working on an MS Excel document that contains a lot of (around 200) images. They are currently saved within the document, so the file becomes huge and working gets very slow. Linking the pictures without saving them works very well - I now have the Excel document and a folder "pictures" next to it that contains all my image files. However, when I move the document and the folder to a new location, all my pictures disappear. This seems to be because Excel saves the link information as absolute paths. (Update: Actually, according to this thread, Excel stores the link information as relative paths as well. Now I really don't know why my links break down..) Is there a convenient way to save them as relative paths or have Excel automatically update the path information? Update: It's important that the images get displayed on the sheet and can be printed. I am working with Microsoft Excel for Mac 2008 and 2011. I really appreciate your help.

Use 'LimitInternalRecursion' to increase the limit if necessary. Use 'LogLevel debug' to get a backtrace., referer: https://www.domain.com/vehicles/Chevrolet/Uplander/2006 The problem is when I enable LogLevel debug we get HUGE error logs because all of our traffic is SSL. From what I can tell the file doesn't record these errors anymore, either that or it's so buried in SSL logs that I just can't find them. • OS X Leopard (10.5) Server -- Unwanted Emails

  Our OS X Leopard (10.5) server is sending out an email EVERY DAY for a Disk Full Notification on an external HDD we use for Time Machine backups (which manages it's own disk space, so the disk full notifications are useless). In the Server Admin app, under Settings Notifications, there's this: which is clearly disabled. The email header and message: http://pastebin.com/V5PZ3Phk I've been told to check the mail.log, but it's mostly empty (except for a few logs in 2011 saying "Postfix mail system is not running". I've also been told to check the crontabs, but I'm not sure how to do that on OS X (or any OS for that matter). Can someone explain how to do this? Also, if there's any other suggestions on places/things/etc to look at/for, my ears are all open!
