• No bass from the speakers

  In Ubuntu 11.10 no bass sound at all when try to play mp3 or 2channels audio. I have 5.1/6 channels speakers. When I test speakers from the sound preference it works perfectly fine and then I try to play any MP3 there is no bass only the speakers work, I play 5.1 movies it plays fine bass sounds good. Also tried to to some changes as instructed with deamon.conf file but no go... When I turn my speakers on play speakers only mode it plays the bass but sound quality is not good compared to normal playing. I have a Creative 5.1 vx ca0160 sound card. In Windows also had the same problem unless I do bass redirection crossover frequency so is there any kinda software package or any kinda changes i can make in system file so that my speaker bass works fine or any thing who can let me change the bass redirection crossover frequency?

• Audiobooks for programmers?

  I'm a programmer with a two-hour round trip commute to work each day. I'd like to fill some of that time with audiobooks about software development. Any audiobooks that would help me become a better programmer would be appreciated. I'm thinking that books about design patterns and non-fiction about computing history might be good here, but I'm open to anything. Keeping in mind that I will be listening to this in a car, what are the best audiobooks that I can listen to? EDIT: Many people have also suggested podcasts. This is appreciated, but since podcasts arrive in a constantly arriving stream of data rather than as a finite amount of data, ways to juggle all of these different content streams would also be appreciated. To be more specific to my situation, my commuting vehicle has an MP3 CD player, USB input for MP3 files, and AUX input. I own Android and webOS devices that can be plugged into the AUX input.

• U1 Music Streaming: Is it possible to have album cover art for OGG files?

  Just started trying out the U1 music streaming service and so far very pleased. The one issue I have that could be a deal-breaker when it comes time to pay up is that half of my collection is OGG Vorbis and I cannot find a way to show album art for OGG files. I already tried adding a cover.jpg to the folder and embedding the image via easyTAG (works for MP3 but not OGG). Does anybody have a solution besides transcoding them all to MP3? Will this likely be supported in future?

• Automatically adding CD box art so that I can put it on my iPod.

  I know it's possible to automatically find CD covers for albums, because rhythmbox is doing it on the fly. (When I listen to stuff, it finds the CD cover online...) What I want is to get this information onto my ipod. As it stands pretty much all my songs have the default blank CD cover... I use gtkpod to transfer music to it. This needs to be an automatic process, because I have a large music library and I'm lazy and it's not exactly an important thing... I rip CDs I buy with the basic CD extractor, so all the files are in a Artist/Album/song.mp3 structure. (Yes I know, mp3 is evil, but iPod doesn't like .ogg so whatever)

  My sites traffic gone null but after Google recieve one dmca complain for my site. My site is a mp3 search engine so I can index copyright mp3 out of my knowledge. I recieved a message in webmasters tools in and I have removed the copyright content from my site but traffic from Google is not increasing. What is the problem? Do I need to tell Google that I have removed the copyright content from my site? If yes then why I have lost my site traffic from Google forever?

• Orchestrating the Virtual Enterprise

  During the American Industrial Revolution, the Ford Motor Company did it all. It turned raw materials into a showroom full of Model Ts. It owned a steel mill, a glass factory, and an automobile assembly line. The company was both self-sufficient and innovative and went on to become one of the largest and most profitable companies in the world. Nowadays, it's unusual for any business to follow this vertical integration model because its much harder to be best in class across such a wide a range of capabilities and services. Instead, businesses focus on their core competencies and outsource other business functions to specialized suppliers. They exchange vertical integration for collaboration. When done well, all parties benefit from this arrangement and the collaboration leads to the creation of an agile, lean and successful "virtual enterprise." Case in point: For Sun hardware, Oracle outsources most of its manufacturing and all of its logistics to third parties. These are vital activities, but ones where Oracle doesn't have a core competency, so we shift them to business partners who do. Within our enterprise, we always retain the core functions of product development, support, and most of the sales function, because that's what constitutes our core value to our customers. This is a perfect example of a virtual enterprise.  What are the implications of this? It means that we must exchange direct internal control for indirect external collaboration. This fundamentally changes the relative importance of different business processes, the boundaries of security and information sharing, and the relationship of the supply chain systems to the ERP. The challenge is that the systems required to support this virtual paradigm are still mired in "island enterprise" thinking. But help is at hand. Developments such as the Web, social networks, collaboration, and rules-based orchestration offer great potential to fundamentally re-architect supply chain systems to better support the virtual enterprise.  Supply Chain Management Systems in a Virtual Enterprise Historically enterprise software was constructed to automate the ERP - and then the supply chain systems extended the ERP. They were joined at the hip. In virtual enterprises, the supply chain system needs to be ERP agnostic, sitting above each of the ERPs that are distributed across the virtual enterprise - most of which are operating in other businesses. This is vital so that the supply chain system can manage the flow of material and the related information through the multiple enterprises. It has to have strong collaboration tools. It needs to be highly flexible. Users need to be able to see information that's coming from multiple sources and be able to react and respond to events across those sources.  Oracle Fusion Distributed Order Orchestration (DOO) is a perfect example of a supply chain system designed to operate in this virtual way. DOO embraces the idea that a company's fulfillment challenge is a distributed, multi-enterprise problem. It enables users to manage the process and the trading partners in a uniform way and deliver a consistent user experience while operating over a heterogeneous, virtual enterprise. This is a fundamental shift at the core of managing supply chains. It forces virtual enterprises to think architecturally about how best to construct their supply chain systems.  Case in point, almost everyone has ordered from Amazon.com at one time or another. Our orders are as likely to be fulfilled by third parties as they are by Amazon itself. To deliver the order promptly and efficiently, Amazon has to send it to the right fulfillment location and know the availability in that location. It needs to be able to track status of the fulfillment and deal with exceptions. As a virtual enterprise, Amazon's operations, using thousands of trading partners, requires a very different approach to fulfillment than the traditional 'take an order and ship it from your own warehouse' model. Amazon had no choice but to develop a complex, expensive and custom solution to tackle this problem as there used to be no product solution available. Now, other companies who want to follow similar models have a better off-the-shelf choice -- Oracle Distributed Order Orchestration (DOO).  Consider how another of our customers is using our distributed orchestration solution. This major airplane manufacturer has a highly complex business and interacts regularly with the U.S. Government and major airlines. It sits in the middle of an intricate supply chain and needed to improve visibility across its many different entities. Oracle Fusion DOO gives the company an orchestration mechanism so it could improve quality, speed, flexibility, and consistency without requiring an organ transplant of these highly complex legacy systems. Many retailers face the challenge of dealing with brick and mortar, Web, and reseller channels. They all need to be knitted together into a virtual enterprise experience that is consistent for their customers. When a large U.K. grocer with a strong brick and mortar retail operation added an online business, they turned to Oracle Fusion DOO to bring these entities together. Disturbing the Peace with Acquisitions Quite often a company's ERP system is disrupted when it acquires a new company. An acquisition can inject a new set of processes and systems -- or even introduce an entirely new business like Sun's hardware did at Oracle. This challenge has been a driver for some of our DOO customers. A large power management company is using Oracle Fusion DOO to provide the flexibility to rapidly integrate additional products and services into its central fulfillment operation. The Flip Side of Fulfillment Meanwhile, we haven't ignored similar challenges on the supply side of the equation. Specifically, how to manage complex supply in a flexible way when there are multiple trading parties involved? How to manage the supply to suppliers? How to manage critical components that need to merge in a tier two or tier three supply chain? By investing in supply orchestration solutions for the virtual enterprise, we plan to give users better visibility into their network of suppliers to help them drive down costs. We also think this technology and full orchestration process can be applied to the financial side of organizations. An example is transactions that flow through complex internal structures to minimize tax exposure. We can help companies manage those transactions effectively by thinking about the internal organization as a virtual enterprise and bringing the same solution set to this internal challenge.  The Clear Front Runner No other company is investing in solving the virtual enterprise supply chain issues like Oracle is. Oracle is in a unique position to become the gold standard in this market space. We have the infrastructure of Oracle technology. We already have an Oracle Fusion DOO application which embraces the best of what's required in this area. • opening socket to google hangs on SYN_SENT

  I have 2 computers now: downloader (asus at4nm10t-i) with debian and desktop (asus sabertooth 990fx) with gentoo in the same network under NAT even with the same ethernet card: RTL8111E. driver r8169 is compiled as module on both computers. Sometimes in evenings desktop cannot connect to google and all its services like now: curl -v http://www.google.by on downloader it received server's answer immediately. on desktop it hanged and when I ran in other terminal: netstat -ntp | grep curl >>tcp 0 1 192.168.0.7:54126 173.194.35.191:80 SYN_SENT 4876/curl after 1-2 minutes it received server's answer. I was tried to change ip of network, mac address of desktop but nothing changed. When I was trying to connect to another services except google: curl -v http://www.yahoo.com both computers received answers immediately! Only when I rebooted desktop it begins to work with google services correctly I cant understand what is this bug related to. In which bugtracker should I post this: r8169 or linux kernel or google? PS. Desktop was checked with memtest: 5 passes - no errors

• Chunking large rsync transfers?

  We use rsync to update a mirror of our primary file server to an off-site colocated backup server. One of the issues we currently have is that our file server has 1TB of mostly smaller files (in the 10-100kb range), and when we're transferring this much data, we often end up with the connection being dropped several hours into the transfer. Rsync doesn't have a resume/retry feature that simply reconnects to the server to pickup where it left off -- you need to go through the file comparison process, which ends up being very length with the amount of files we have. The solution that's recommended to get around is to split up your large rsync transfer into a series of smaller transfers. I've figured the best way to do this is by first letter of the top-level directory names, which doesn't give us a perfectly even distribution, but is good enough. I'd like to confirm if my methodology for doing this is sane, or if there's a more simple way to accomplish the goal. To do this, I iterate through A-Z, a-z, 0-9 to pick a one character $prefix. Initially I was thinking of just running rsync -av --delete --delete-excluded --exclude "*.mp3" "src/$prefix*" dest/ (--exclude "*.mp3" is just an example, as we have a more lengthy exclude list for removing things like temporary files) The problem with this is that any top-level directories in dest/ that are no longer present present on src will not get picked up by --delete. To get around this, I'm instead trying the following: rsync \ --filter 'S /$prefix*' \ --filter 'R /$prefix*' \ --filter 'H /*' \ --filter 'P /*' \ -av --delete --delete-excluded --exclude "*.mp3" src/ dest/ I'm using the show and hide over include and exclude, because otherwise the --delete-excluded will delete anything that doesn't match $prefix. Is this the most effective way of splitting the rsync into smaller chunks? Is there a more effective tool, or a flag that I've missed, that might make this more simple?

• Is there a way to "burn" audio to an ISO? (as an audio CD)

  I have an audiobook that I've downloaded via their download manager, and it's loaded into their cutesy little audio program that they force you to use. I can play the book just fine using their proprietary software, and while it's annoying when using my PC, it's utterly UNBEARABLE when I try to listen to it on my Blackberry. The program is INSANELY slow, it literally takes around 30 seconds to switch between tracks, so if I've forgotten where I am in the book it takes me around 15 minutes to finally get to where I was at. I've looked everywhere on how to transcode the book to .MP3, but evidently with their current format it's either extremely convoluted (and I have no desire to dick around with installing some older version of the codec, getting a different transcoding app, and then wrestling with getting it to actually work). Since I'm able to burn a copy of the book to an audio CD, I figure the best way to go about this is to just make the CDs and then rip them off of those to .MP3. In order to avoid wasting two hours, not to mention 14 CD-R's, I was wondering if there's a way to "burn" to an .ISO instead of an actual CD-R. I currently have SlySoft's Virtual CloneDrive installed, so I can mount .ISO's easily enough, but now I want to actually create an ISO via the CD burning process. Just in case I've not explained myself very well, here is an overview of what I intend to do: "Burn" a set of Audio CD .ISOs from the audiobook (hopefully I can do this using Windows Media Player, otherwise I'll be forced to use the audiobook app) Mount an .ISO in Virtual CloneDrive Rip the audio tracks on the mounted .ISO to .MP3s Repeat steps 2-3 until the entire book is in .MP3 format Copy .MP3s to my Blackberry so that I'm not driven insane every time I want to listen to the book in the car, and be able to use Winamp when listening on my computer EDIT: I'd suppose a rather concise way to put it is that I need something that will emulate a CD-R drive, so that you can select it as the output drive in whatever app your burning the audio CD from. (I'd suppose that when you "insert a blank CD-R" the app would then ask you what file to save to)

• Moving symlinks into a folder based on id3 tags.

  I'm trying to get my music folder into something sensible. Right now, I have all my music stored in /home/foo so I have all of the albums soft linked to ~/music. I want the structure to be ~/music/<artist>/<album> I've got all of the symlinks into ~/music right now so I just need to get the symlinks into the proper structure. I'm trying to do this by delving into the symlinked album, getting the artist name with id3info. I can do this, but I can't seem to get it to work correctly. for i in $( find -L $i -name "*.mp3" -printf "%h\n") do echo "$i" #testing purposes #find its artist #the stuff after read file just cuts up id3info to get just the artist name #$artist = find -L $i -name "*.mp3" | read file; id3info $file | grep TPE | sed "s|.*: \(.*\)|\1|"|head -n1 #move it to correct artist folder #mv "$i" "$artist" done Now, it does find the correct folder, but every time there is a space in the dir name it makes it a newline.   Can I go ahead and install a Windows Home Server using an MSDN iso ( en_windows_home_server_installation_disc_x86_dvd_x14-24276.iso ), and activate it later when my OEM box arrives (OEM sku as bougth from Amazon, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-OEM-Home-Server-WIN32/dp/B001E5Q8CO/ ) , or will I have to wait and use the media that ships with the license? 1) I know that you can not do his with the trial, but the MSDN iso is listed as "retail". 2) I do not wish to use the MSDN activation key for this install.

• What do you use RightScale for?

  I'm currently evaluating whether to use RightScale to manage a production environment in EC2. I intend to use Puppet for configuration management either way (the declarative approach seems far better than running scripts), am running a somewhat nonstandard stack (e.g. MongoDB), and am uncertain about how much value RightScale would add relative to Puppet + Amazon's auto-scaling + another hosted monitoring system. Those who use RightScale, what features do you find important? Is its auto-scaling support (including keeping single instances running) more powerful than Amazon's?
