• PLKs and Web Service Software Factory

  We found a bug in Web Service Software Factory a description can be found here. There has been no updates on it so we decided to download the code and fix it ourself. Very simple bug and we patched it with maybe 3 lines of code. However* we have now tried to repackage it and use it and are finding that this is seemingly an impossible process. Can someone please explain to me the process of PLKs? I have read all about them but still don't understand what is really required to distribute a VS package. I was able to get it to load and run using a PLK obtained from here, but i am assuming that you have to be a partner to get a functional PLK that will be recognized on other peoples systems? Every time i try and install this on a different computer I get a "Package Load Failure". Is the reason I am getting errors because I am not using a partner key? Is there any other way around this? For instance is there any way we can have an "internal" VS package that we can distribute? Edit Files I had to change to get it to work. First run devenv PostInstall.proj Generate your plks and replace ##Package PLK## (.resx files) --Just note that package version is not the class name but is "Web Service Software Factory: Modeling Edition" -- And you need to remove the new lines from the key ProductDefinitionRegistryFragment.wxi line 1252(update version to whatever version you used in plk) Uncomment all // [VSShell::ProvideLoadKey("Standard", Constant in .tt files.

• Python Pre-testing for exceptions when coverage fails

  I recently came across a simple but nasty bug. I had a list and I wanted to find the smallest member in it. I used Python's built-in min(). Everything worked great until in some strange scenario the list was empty (due to strange user input I could not have anticipated). My application crashed with a ValueError (BTW - not documented in the official docs). I have very extensive unit tests and I regularly check coverage to avoid surprises like this. I also use Pylint (everything is integrated in PyDev) and I never ignore warnings, yet I failed to catch this bug before my users did. Is there anything I can change in my methodology to avoid these kind of runtime errors? (which would have been caught at compile time in Java / C#?). I'm looking for something more than wrapping my code with a big try-except. What else can I do? How many other build in Python functions are hiding nasty surprises like this???

• Passing string with (accidental) escape character loses character even though it's a raw string

  I have a function with a python doctest that fails because one of the test input strings has a backslash that's treated like an escape character even though I've encoded the string as a raw string. • even PHP has 'bugs' with IE

  It's not a real bug BUT for sure it is not what you would expect. I have this sample code to upload images: <?php if($type=="image/jpg" || $type=="image/jpeg" || $type=="image/pjpeg" || $type=="image/tiff" || $type=="image/gif" || $type=="image/png") { // make upload else echo "Incorect format ...."; ?> The problem is that that if I modify the extention of an image, let's say to .jpgq or even .jpg% and i try to upload it FF and Chrome will say that the file"s type is "application/octet-stream" and normaly the condition will be false BUT since IE is 'smarter' that other brow. it will say that the file is "image/pjeg and the condition will be true and the file will be uploaded and of course latter any brow. will not be able to read / view the image. It is not a bug because on msdn.microsoft.com it says that: "If the "suggested" (server-provided) MIME type is unknown (not known and not ambiguous), FindMimeFromData immediately returns this MIME type" and "If the server-provided MIME type is either known or ambiguous, the buffer is scanned in an attempt to verify or obtain a MIME type from the actual content." plus others 'inovative solutions from Microsoft'. SO my questions are: Why is IE so 'smart' and when I upload the file to server it knows the real MIME type BUT it will fail to read it from the server ? How can i work around this issue (if the file doesn't have the right extention the condition has to be false)? Is it wise to check the extention format (and not the MIME type)? is any of the above extention not recomended to use ? Should I add others?

• Disabling redraw in WinForms app

  I'm working on a C#.Net application which has a somewhat annoying bug in it. The main window has a number of tabs, each of which has a grid on it. When switching from one tab to another, or selecting a different row in a grid, it does some background processing, and during this the menu flickers as it's redrawn (File, Help, etc menu items as well as window icon and title). I tried disabling the redraw on the window while switching tabs/rows (WM_SETREDRAW message) at first. In one case, it works perfectly. In the other, it solves the immediate bug (title/menu flicker), but between disabling the redraw and enabling it again, the window is "transparent" to mouse clicks - there's a small window (<1 sec) in which I can click and it will, say, highlight an icon on my desktop, as if the app wasn't there at all. If I have something else running in the background (Firefox, say) it will actually get focus when clicked (and draw part of the browser, say the address bar.) • Any good tools or tips for fuzz testing Windows forms applications?

  I'm maintaining a ~300K LOC C# legacy thick-client application with a Windows.Forms interface. The app is full of little bugs and quirks. For example, I recently discovered a bug where if a users edits and tabs (not clicks) through cells on a DataViewGrid, and leaves the a certain cell selected, the app gets an "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" exception. I discover (or get a bug report of) something new like this about every week or two. I've had enough, and was thinking of trying some sort of fuzz testing on the application to try to ferret out undiscovered issues. If I roll-my-own fuzz testing, I'd assume I at least need to be able to generate test harnesses that run pieces of my app (main window, FormX, FormY, FormZ, ...) independently and try to inject events into them. I was trying to look for tools suited for this, but so far have come up with nothing for Win Forms. (There seems to be no shortage of fuzz testing tools for web apps, however). Any helpful ideas?

• jQuery problem with change event and IE8

  There is a bug in jQuery 1.4.2 that makes change event on select-element getting fired twice when using both DOM-event and a jQuery event, and this only on IE7/8. After several hours of digging into my SqlMembershipProvider (simplified version of built-in SqlMembershipProvider), I found that HMACSHA256 hash is not consistent. • How to Debug an exception: Type is not marked as serializable... when the type is marked as serializ

  I'm trying to: ((Request.Params["crmid"] != null)) in a web page. But it keeps throwing a serialzation exception: Type 'QC.Security.SL.SiteUser' in assembly 'QC.Security, Version=1.0.0.1, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' is not marked as serializable. The type is however marked as serializable as follows: [Serializable()] public class SiteUser : IIdentity { private long _userId; public long UserId { get { return _userId; } set { _userId = value; } } private string _name; public string Name { get { return _name; } } private bool _isAuthenticated; public bool IsAuthenticated { get { return _isAuthenticated; } } private string _authenticationType; public string AuthenticationType { get { return _authenticationType; } } I've no idea how to debug this as I cant step into the serializer code to find out why its falling over. The call stack is only one frame deep before it hits [External Code]. And the error message is next to useless given that type is clearly marked as serializable. It was working fine. But now "all of a sudden" it doesn't which typically means some dumb bug in Visual Studio but rebooting doesn't help "this" time. So now I dont know if it's a stupid VS bug or a completely unrelated error for which Im getting a serialization exception or something I'm doing wrong. The truth is I just dont trust VS anymore given the number of wild goose chases Ive been on over the last several months which were "fixed" by rebooting VS 2008 or some other rediculous workaround.

• Javascript not able to read data generated by ajax script

  I have a situation in which my Jquery Ajax script generates HTML table. And another script is meant to filter the table column by providing a dropdown comprising of unique values in that particular column. If i have static content in html page the filter script works fine. But is not able to read table content when it is generated via Ajax that is during runtime. Any idea what could be the reason. • Getting error: "This webpage is not available" for my chrome app's options page

  My CRX had the proper html page options.html in it, the manifest declares it properly (it shows up as a link on the chrome://extensions page) but when I click that link, Chrome gives the error: This webpage is not available The webpage at chrome-extension://invalid/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address. It says "invalid" but the app runs perfectly well (all the content scripts run, the background created a database and saved to it). Why would it show as invalid? Why doesn't it have the extensions' id? Here's the manifest: { "manifest_version": 2, "name": "MyAPP", "description": "My App", "version": "0.0.0.32", "minimum_chrome_version": "27", "offline_enabled": true, "options_page": "options.html", "icons": { "16": "images/icon16.png", "48": "images/icon48.png", "128": "images/icon128.png" }, "app": { "background": { "scripts": [ "scripts/background.js" ] } }, "permissions": [ "unlimitedStorage", "fullscreen", { "fileSystem": [ "write" ] }, "background", "<all_urls>", "tabs" ] } Does it need to be declared in "web_accessible_resources"? • Most unintuitive behaviour in the .Net framework?

  Intended behavior is often another phrase for bug-which-we-knew-about-when-we-wrote-it, but-we-wrote-it-anyways. Because it was "intended" (or perhaps it is now too late or too difficult), many of these extremely-unintuitive bugs never get fixed. For instance, consider the following code (C#): TextInfo textInfo = Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture.TextInfo; textInfo.ToTitleCase("hello world!"); //Returns "Hello World!" textInfo.ToTitleCase("hElLo WoRld!"); //Returns "Hello World!" textInfo.ToTitleCase("Hello World!"); //Returns "Hello World!" What would you expect textInfo.ToTitleCase("HELLO WORLD!"); to return? In fact, it returns "HELLO WORLD!". This was well-documented "intended behavior," but, in my eyes, is extremely unintuitive, and therefore a bug. What is some other unintuitive behavior like this in this in the .Net framework? Bonus points if you can provide a fix that does not break backwards-compatibility. Remember! Always keep these two simple rules in mind when designing an API (or anything else): Make the common case the default, and Keep It Simple, Stupid!

• PHP fails silently when php-code is within html tag

  PROBLEM UPDATED, READ BELOW For some reason my CI fails silently when loading view. Loading view is simply called from controller $this->load->view('templates/default.php'); Now. There are some functions in the loaded view that are not defined unless a proper helper is loaded as well. Normally, php would throw an error, but instead it fails silently here. I have no idea why. The template gets outputted till the line containing the undefined function. It took me long time to realise where my script is failing. Here's my setup: Windows 7 Ultimate Apache 2.2.15 PHP 5.3.2 with following error reporting settings: display_errors = On display_startup_errors = On error_reporting = E_ALL | E_STRICT CodeIgniter 1.7.2 Any ideas why would that be? UPDATE After further debugging, it turned out that PHP fails to report any errors when php code is inline with HTML and within the HTML tag. Now this is bizarre. This returns Fatal Error: <p><?php echo $bogus(); ?></p> This doesn't and fails silently: <p class="<?php echo $bogus(); ?>">paragraph</p> Why? :O UPDATE 2 Further investigation showed that if an error_log in PHP is specified, the errors are in fact reported in that file, but still not in the browser... Again, why? UPDATE 3 Actually my code should be slightly different. Checked another PHP installation on completely different machine and it confirmed the PHP bug. • What should be the "trunk" development, or release

  I have the unfortunate opportunity of source control via Borland's StarTeam. It unfortunately does very few things well, and one supreme weakness is its view management. I love SVN and come from an SVN mindset. Our issue is post production release we are spending countless hours merging changes into a "production support" environment. Please do not harass me this was not my doing, I inherited it and am trying to present a better way of managing the repository. It is not an option to switch to a different SCM tool. Current setup Product.1.0 (TRUNK, current production code, and at this level are pending bug fixes) Product.2.0(true trunk anything checked in gets tested, and then released next production cycle, a lot of changes occur in this view) My proposal is going to be to swap them, have all development be done on the trunk (Production), tag on releases, and as needed create child views to represent production support bug fixes. Production Production.2.0.SP.1 I can not find any documentation to support the above proposal so I am trying to get feedback on whether or not the change is a good idea and if there is anything you would recommend doing differently.

  Hi, Is there any single msql query which can update customer DOB? I want to update the DOB of those customers which have DOB greater than current date. example:- if a customer have dob 2034 update it to 1934 , if have 2068 updated with 1968. There was a bug in my system if you enter date less than 1970 it was storing it as 2070. The bug is solved now but what about the customers which have wrong DOB. So I have to update their DOB. • Which Project Management Software is adequate for Software & Non-Software Projects?

  PMS = (Project Management Software) I used trac for software development some time ago. Right now I'm searching for a new more powerful (scheduling, gantt charts, ...) free solution (as in free beer ;-) and free to install on my server) for my current software project. Besides the current software project, abstract project management features like issue-tracking & scheduling would be great for coordinating a group of volunteers for real-life projects as well. I would want one solution for both purposes, so that I have the hassle of installation, getting used to the system and administration only once. So I tried redmine but the problem is it seems to be designed for software projects only. I can't suggest such a solution for the volunteer-group if tickets/issues would have to be of type bug, feature, ... I shortlisted the following six PMS from the wikipedia comparison http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_project_management_software Project.net Project-Open Redmine Trac Endeavour Software Project Management eGroupWare I guess they are all more or less fine for software development but would you consider any of these to be good for the non-software project as well? Cliff Notes: I would want a start page situation like in trac. The start-page is a wiki presenting the project and not the PMS. But you can log into the PMS from there. Feature-wish list: wiki, Issue tracking, revision control, scheduling & gantt charts, forums (least important) (Btw: I'm very aware that I can't expect everything to be perfect ;-) 1.)Do you know a suitable solution for software and real-life projects or a highly customizable PMS where I can easily remove sth. like "browse source"(trac) and rename things like ticket/issue-types "bug", "feature"? 2.)Any experience good/bad with the above mentioned six PMS? • Jquery animate bottom problem

  It's strange. I have an animation that start when i .hover on a DIV. Into this div i have another in position absolute that i want to move up until the mouse stay on main div and go down in your position when i go out of main div. A simple hover effect. I have write down this function that work well apart a strange bug. var inside = $('.inside') inside.hover(function() { $(this).children(".coll_base").stop().animate({ bottom:'+=30px' },"slow") }, function() { $(this).children(".coll_base").stop().animate({ bottom:'-=30px' },"slow"); }); i need +=30 and -=30 because i have to apply this function to a range of div with different bottom. The problem is that if i hover on and out of div the DIV animate right but when go down he decrease the value of bottom every animation. If i go up and down from the main div i see that the animated div go down even beyond the main div. I think that i miss something to resolve this bug. Thanks for any help

• Avoid the problem with BigDecimal when migrating to Java 1.4 to Java 1.5+

  Hello, I've recently migrated a Java 1.4 application to a Java 6 environment. Unfortunately, I encountered a problem with the BigDecimal storage in a Oracle database. To summarize, when I try to store a "7.65E+7" BigDecimal value (76,500,000.00) in the database, Oracle stores in reality the value of 7,650,000.00. This defect is due to the rewritting of the BigDecimal class in Java 1.5 (see here). In my code, the BigDecimal was created from a double using this kind of code: BigDecimal myBD = new BigDecimal("" + someDoubleValue); someObject.setAmount(myBD); // Now let Hibernate persists my object in DB... In more than 99% of the cases, everything works fine. Except that in really few case, the bug mentioned above occurs. And that's quite annoying. If I change the previous code to avoid the use of the String constructor of BigDecimal, then I do not encounter the bug in my uses cases: BigDecimal myBD = new BigDecimal(someDoubleValue); someObject.setAmount(myBD); // Now let Hibernate persists my object in DB... However, how can I be sure that this solution is the correct way to handle the use of BigDecimal? So my question is to know how I have to manage my BigDecimal values to avoid this issue: Do not use the new BigDecimal(String) constructor and use directly the new BigDecimal(double)? Force Oracle to use toPlainString() instead of toString() method when dealing with BigDecimal (and in this case how to do that)? Any other solution? Environment information: Java 1.6.0_14 Hibernate 2.1.8 (yes, it is a quite old version) Oracle JDBC 9.0.2.0 and also tested with 10.2.0.3.0 Oracle database 10.2.0.3.0

• 2 Mutually exclusive RadioButton "Lists"

  I think this has to be THE most frustrating thing I've ever done in web forms. Yet one would think it would be the easiest of all things in the world to do. That is this: I need 2 separate lists of radiobuttons on my .aspx page. One set allows a customer to select an option. The other set does also but for a different purpose. But only one set can have a selected radiobutton. Ok I've tried this using 2 asp.net Radiobuttonlists controls on the same page. Got around the nasty bug with GroupName (asp.net assigns the control's uniqueID which prevents the groupname from ever working because now, 2 radiobuttonlists can't have the same groupname for all their radiobuttons because each radiobuttonlist has a different uniqueID thus the bug assigns the unique ID as the name attribute when the buttons are rendered. since the name sets are different, they are not mutually exclusive). Anyway, so I created that custom RadioButtonListcontrol and fixed that groupname problem. But when ended up happening is when I went to put 2 instances of my new custom radiobuttonlist control on my .aspx page, all was swell until I noticed that every time I checked for radiobuttonlist1.SelectedValue or radiobuttonlist2.SelectedValue (did not matter which I was checking) the value always spit back string.empty and i was not able to figure out why (see http://forums.asp.net/t/1401117.aspx). Ok onto the third try tonight and into the break of dawn (no sleep). I tried to instead just scrap trying to use 2 custom radiobuttonlists altogether because of that string.empty issue and try to spit out 2 sets of radiobuttonlists via using 2 asp.net repeaters and a standard input HTML tag inside. Got that working. Ok but the 2 lists still are not mutually exclusive. I can select a value in the first set of radiobuttons from repeater1 and same goes for repeater2. I cannot for the life of me get the "sets" to be mutually exclusive sets of radiobuttons.

  Hi, I have maven project that fails when release:perform is called, though release;prepare works as expected. What does the warning Base directory is a file want me to do instead?! It then figures that the base directory is workspace which then means the working directory is not found...any ideas? • Adding a minimum display time for Silverlight splash screen.

  When hosting a silverlight application on a webpage it is possible to use the splashscreensource parameter to specify a simple Silverlight 1.0 (xaml+javascript) control to be displayed while the real xap file is downloaded, and which can receive notification of the downloads progress through onSourceDownloadProgressChanged. If the xap file is in cache, the splash screen is not shown (and if the download only takes 1 second, the splash screen will only be shown for 1 second). I know this is not best practice in general, but I am looking for a way to specify a minimum display time for the splash screen - even if the xap cached or the download is fast, the splash screen would remain up for at least, let's say, 5 seconds (for example to show a required legal disclaimer, corporate identity mark or other bug). I do want to do it in the splash screen exclusively (rather then in the main xap) as I want it to be clean and uninterupted (for example a sound bug) and shown to the user as soon as they open the page, rather then after the download (which could take anywhere from 1 to 20+ seconds). I'd prefer not to accomplish this with preloading - replacing the splash screen with a full Silverlight xap application (with it's own loading screen), which then programmably loads and displays the full xap after a minimum wait time.

• Is it necessary to "escape" character "<" and ">" for javascript string?

  Sometimes, server side will generate strings to be embedded in inline JavaScript code. For example, if "UserName" should be generated by ASP.NET. Then it looks like. <script> var username = "<%UserName%>"; </script> This is not safe, because a user can have his/her name to be </script><script>alert('bug')</script></script> It is XSS vulnerability. So, basically, the code should be: <script> var username = "<% JavascriptEncode(UserName)%>"; </script> What JavascriptEncode does is to add charater "\" before "/" and "'" and """. So, the output html is like. var username = "<\/scriptalert(\'bug\')<\/script<\/script"; Browser will not interpret "<\/script" as end of script block. So, XSS in avoided. However, there are still "<" and "" there. It is suggested to escape these two characters as well. First of all, I don't believe it is a good idea to change "<" to "&lt;" and "" to "&gt;" here. And, I'm not sure changing "<" to "\<" and "" to "\" is recognizable to all browsers. It seems it is not necessary to do further encoding for "<" and "". Is there any suggestion on this? Thanks.

• Spring-MVC Problem using @Controller on controller implementing an interface

  I'm using spring 2.5 and annotations to configure my spring-mvc web context. Unfortunately, I am unable to get the following to work. I'm not sure if this is a bug (seems like it) or if there is a basic misunderstanding on how the annotations and interface implementation subclassing works. For example, @Controller @RequestMapping("url-mapping-here") public class Foo { @RequestMapping(method=RequestMethod.GET) public void showForm() { ... } @RequestMapping(method=RequestMethod.POST) public String processForm() { ... } } works fine. When the context starts up, the urls this handler deals with are discovered, and everything works great. • asp.net ajax toolkit combobox doesn't work in hidden div

  I have a combobox inside a hidden div which I use css display = none to make it invisible, but when I make the div visible by setting display = block, the combobox just show the input and its button and ul list all have css as display = 'none', visibility ='hidden'. I can tell it is done by combobox inbuild javascript because I tried to use javascript to set the css manually with no luck. It is a bug of combobox. Urgent help needed. I spent a week to solve this, and our team put a lot trust on the toolkit. Please help me on this, all javascript gurus, thanks. Below is the code to reproduce the bug. • Reporting Services keeps erasing my dataset parameters

  I'm using a web service and every time I change something on the dataset, it erases all my parameters. The weird thing is, I can execute the web service call from the data tab and it prompts for all my parameters, but if I click to edit the data the list is empty or if I try to preview the report it blows up because parameters are missing. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if there is a way to prevent this behavior. Here is a copy of the dataset, not that I think it matters. This has to be the most annoying bug (if its a bug) ever. I can't even execute the dataset from the designer without it erasing my parameter list. When you have about 10 parameters and you are making all kinds of changes to a new report, it becomes very tedious to be constantly re-typing the same list over and over.
