• How do I optimize searching for the nearest point?

  For a little project of mine I'm trying to implement a space colonization algorithm in order to grow trees. The current implementation of this algorithm works fine. But I have to optimize the whole thing in order to make it generate faster. I work with 1 to 300K of random attraction points to generate one tree, and it takes a lot of time to compute and compare distances between attraction points and tree node in order to keep only the closest treenode for an attraction point. So I was wondering if some solutions exist (I know they must exist) in order to avoid the time loss looping on each tree node for each attraction point to find the closest... and so on until the tree is finished.

What I have to check for last time until I went online? (Yeah, Facebook Facebook. Facebook don't have that community sense. You cannot find all your department mates on Facebook. • ETL Software Research Question

  Where I work, we use an in-house ETL solution that's homegrown and has been around for 5-10 years. I'm still new to my data analysis job, but I was wondering about the ETL tools that are out there. This is a new area for me. My situation, and job, is basically digging in a set of databases (DB2, SQL2005, Citrix, Ancient Cobol Database with a SQL Wrapper on top, MySQL, etc). Gather the desired information. combine the different datasets into one set. output into a file of choice (CSV, Tab Separated, Pipe Separated, XLS, etc). FTP to customer. I guess what my real question is, given my job, what are some good ETL suites that I can look at and compare to my in-house tools? This is more to research some other options. Ultimately, I'd either suggest a new solution or get options/ideas to improve our current app.

• How can I rescue a Lubuntu install?

  Quick recap: I was having a problem with hibernation so I check and the linuxswap partition is missing, showing an "unknown" chunk of drive where it was. Happened before, booted to the liveCD and used Gparted to reformat that partition back to swap. Then I boot........F---- grub rescue... MBR took care of the problem, except that now I'm back to Windows only. EVERY guide out there makes me reinstall Lubuntu from scratch, a waste of time considering it will take me at least a day to reinstall everything there. Can't I just fix grub like I did with the win MBR?

• Unable to start GRUB2 on Triple boot Macbook Pro with OS X Lion, Windows 7 and Ubuntu

  I installed Windows 7 using Bootcamp. Then I created a partition from the empty space in the Windows partition and another 4GB partition for the linux swap using GParted. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS in the the newly created partition from the Windows partition. Now GRUB2 does not load and I can only see the blinking cursor on the top right when selecting "Windows HD" from the 'option' key at the start up. OS X works fine but nothing else. • Ubuntu 12.04 wont install on Macbook

  I've installed Ubuntu on my Macbook before but something went wrong with the updater. So, I had to backup my HDD and format it and reinstall OS X Lion. But here's the thing: Ever since I re-installed my OS I've been trying to get Ubuntu back on the HDD. I partitioned it to 40 GB and set the file system to Ext4. I also recently created a swap partition too and it seems to install correctly. After i installed rEFIt it just has this cute little penguin sitting there. I rebooted and tried to go back to Ubuntu and the penguin still shows up but this time a black screen pops up and it asks me to insert a bootable device and press any key. I'm not sure why this is happening. This is probably the 5th time I've tried to install it. I've even used a different Ubuntu ISO but it still won't boot after the installation.

• Is it possible to power down my external via the eject button?

  I'm trying to convert from Windows 7 to Ubuntu 12.10 with Gnome 3.6. Using the notification area's eject icon, I notice the partition is unmounted but the drive is still powered and spinning... I understand the latter can be taken care of by means of udisks --detach /dev/sdb I really don't want to have to run a command everytime I eject. Windows does the whole process when ejecting a medium via the systray. Is there a way I could add in the command to the eject button? Is there an appropriate place I could file a feature request? Little things like this are making it hard for me to swap back over to Linux. Thanks for the support!

• Half the time Linux drop into BusyBox; the rest of the time the boot happens normally

  I just installed Ubuntu x64 onto a USB3 Drive from a DVD, and half the time it appears to skip the grub menu and boots directly into BusyBox. Since the USB3 drive is an SSD, I ran through the full installation (installing on an ext4 partition, along side a 1GB boot partition at the start of the disk), skipping the swap partition. Part of the time that the Grub Menu does shows, it boots into BusyBox with an error: ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/[uid] does not exist. Dropping to a shell! What could cause such an issue?

• Grub can't find device on boot resulting in Grub Rescue

  So I have 2 hard drives a HDD 320GB and a SSD 20GB. Before I had Windows 7 on the HDD and Ubuntu on the SSD but wanted to get rid of windows and reinstall a clean Ubuntu on the SSD then use the HDD for storage. So I deleted everything from the HDD and set up the SSD with 18GB ext4 and 2GB Swap and installed Ubuntu on the 18GB ext4. Though now when I boot up I get "Error: No such device Grub Rescue" I have a live USB and I ran the Boot Repair following these instructions - grub rescue after install of Ubuntu 12.04 (dual boot) - it says successful though still have the same problem.   So I just created a new widget that would show up in a product page in my site. This widget will show several products similar to the product that is displayed in the current page. The purpose is to help users compare similar products. Let's say in the product page A http://domain/products/A The Similar Products widget will show http://domain/products/B http://domain/products/C http://domain/products/D http://domain/products/E My question is how to track this "Product B page were visited X times from Product A page via Similar Product widget"? (And there is also chance that Product B will show up in the widget on Product C page) I have this idea using the Event feature from Google Analytics. But I'm still not sure if it is or what is the common best practice for this.

• mail server crash

  i have a mail server running ubuntu 12.04. my server has a main 200gb hdd as the /, and other scsi hdd. as far as i recall, i used the 5 scsi harddrives for different mount points.. 1 hard drive is /swap, 1 hard drive is /usr ...the other is /boot, i cant recall the other 2.. just yesterday, my /usr drive died... and it wont let me boot into the server.. ive tried to skip mounting the /usr with the S option when i go to recovery drive, but the server still wont boot up. i need help badly because the server needs to be up and running ASAP. thank you for all the help.

• Why does the Git community seem to ignore side-by-side diffs

  I used to use Windows, SVN, Tortoise SVN, and Beyond Compare. It was a great combination for doing code reviews. Now I use OSX and Git. I've managed to kludge together a bash script along with Gitx and DiffMerge to come up with a barely acceptable solution. I've muddled along with this setup, and similar ones, for over a year. I've also tried using the Github diff viewer and the Gitx diff viewer, so it's not like I've not given them a chance. There are so many smart people doing great stuff with Git. Why not the side-by-side diff with the option of seeing the entire file? With people who have used both, I've never heard of anyone that likes the single +/- view better, at least for more than a quick check.

  I am a COBOL programmer, desperately trying to learn and program Java. Although I understand the OO priciples and concepts, I am at a lost putting all together. I am trying to find some examples on how code will look in COBOL vs Java - something a bit more complicated than "hello world" [I am past that initial headache! :-)], that includes OO principles - basically, a decent 1000+ liner in COBOL, with the Java code to work through.   I upgraded my Ubuntu 10.10 for Ubuntu 12.04. I have a Emachines E625 With Ubuntu 12.04 my wireless always disconnects every 10 sec. It didn't do that with 10.10. • Ubuntu gets slower by the day

  Ive noticed that Ubuntu has been getting slower and slower to boot, launch programs, etc. I installed 12.04 about 4 months ago,now 12.10, running on a quad-core Q8300 Intel, 4GB Ram, and an 80GB WD IDE drive. For some reason (ever since 11.04), Ive noticed after installation, the speed is good. The longer I have the OS installed, every bootup gets slower and slower, launching programs get slower, frame rates change radically(onboard GF9400 gets anywhere from 60fps down to 12 in worst cases). I would think maybe the HD is the issue, however I installed 11.10 on a 160GB SATA, and the same thing occurred. Looking at system resources, I'm holding steady at 1GB memory usage (I have 4GB, but it's actually showing 3.6GB, dunno why), no swap usage, and using right around 4% on cpu currently. HD capacity is only 28% used. Has anyone else ran into this issue? I love Ubuntu to death, but using other distros other than Ubuntu, I dont have this problem.

• How can I link to callback functions in Lua such that the callbacks will be updated when the scripts are reloaded?

  I'm implementing Lua scripting in my game using LuaBind, and one of the things I'm not clear on is the logistics of reloading the scripts live ingame. Currently, using the LuaBind C++ class luabind::object, I save references to Lua callbacks directly in the classes that use them. Then I can use luabind::call_function using that object in order to call the Lua code from the C++ code. I haven't tested this yet, but my assumption is that if I reload the scripts, then all the functions will be redefined, BUT the references to the OLD functions will still exist in the form of the luabind::object held by the C++ code. I would like to be able to swap out the old for the new without manually having to manage this for every script hook in the game. How best to change this so the process works? My first thought is to not save a reference to the function directly, but maybe save the function name instead, and grab the function by name every time we want to call it. I'm looking for better ideas!
