  • How to Best Setup a Website Project in VS.NET

    I have very little experience with setting up a website from scratch in a .NET environment. As I am doing this now, I am wondering - what's the best way to go? Is it better to create a new Website Project, and include the various backend services and database code as part of that project, or is it better to split out the various aspects of the project? If the second, how would I go about doing that? I want to ensure that this project is easy to manage in the future (in terms of source control, deployment, etc), so I want to make sure I'm starting off on the right foot. I was unable to find any tutorials online, but if you have any, I would appreciate those as well. Thanks!

Why's that?

    Hello, I want to make some url rewrite rules on my .htaccess file so that this link: http://myseite.com/index.php?var1=value1&var2=value2 will become : http://myseite.com/var1/value2.html So far I have managed successfully to solve this problem but only for one variable. I also tried this code: RewriteRule ^([^/]*)/([^/]*)\.html$ /index.php?var1=$1&var2=$2 [L] But it doesn't work.. Thank you for the help!

    This is deals_controller.rb. And it works like this, except two things. Not sure how to call Deal.count to add in my flash[:notice] . I get the hunch that its not calling something global. I need that contional statement back, as I'm pretty sure its responsible for actually adding the new @deal . So I assume my syntax is off. I want something that really illustrates the flexibility that the team has when implementing stories to define the scope and complexity of the feature themselves. Most of the teams have long-term waterfall experience and are used to having a well-defined specification. I'm looking for something that illustrates the need for the team to vary the scope of what they are building themselves, dependent on the time and resources available. I couldn't find anything at tastycupcakes.com and Google wasn't much help. Maybe someone has prepared something themselves they would care to share?

  • Book Recomendations: WPF/Silverlight for Business(smallish, internal) Environment

    Yes, I know there are an insane amount of Book posts here(SO) but none I believe for my specific need. If there is and I missed it I apologize. I am the only developer at a non-profit organization(~200 employees) where we are a M$ shop and 90% of the things I develop are specific to our company and are internal only. I am given a lot of latitude on how I accomplish my goals so using new technologies is in my best interest. So far I have developed all winform & asp.net applications but I am an expert by NO MEANS. I would now like to focus on XAML driven development(WPF & Silverlight) but I have no idea where to start. I am subscribed to numerous Silverlight blogs and I have went through a few good tutorials however, I would really appreciate a GOOD SOLID book in my hands going forward. I prefer learning books versus reference books and I REALLY would like one from a Business standpoint as well. Shameless, self-promoting is welcomed if you happen to be an author or reviewer for one that meets my criteria. I would, however, prefer that recomendations were based on first-hand experience(no, 'my friend as this awesome book he told me about', please). If more info is needed to provide accurate recomendations please let me know. Thanks

I was wondering if there is the best practice on where to store global settings in a rails app. What I mean by that is i.e: I have a few globals defined that may change, but not likely and it seems inappropriate to store them in DB since they are used so much. For instance I have SYSTEM_EMAIL & SYSTEM_EMAIL_SIGNATURE & SYSTEM_STORAGE_ROOT. Right now I keep them in environment.rb, but I'm not sure if this is the right palce to store them. Thank you

    Hi, I'm trying to write a shell script to backup websites, I've got it to go through each directory in vhosts and create a new directory vhosts/{siteurl}/private/backups/ and gzip up the site into there. However, I also want it to read a file from private that will contain database name, user and password. So I can then use these to perform a mysqldump to private/backups/. The problem is that I've never written a shell script before so I've go no idea how to read variable data into my script, or how I should format the file to be read. Hope that's enough information.

  • ActionScript 3 - access variables in main application class from instantiated class

    I have a initApp.as which instantiates a class which needs to access the "currentState" property and the States array as well. However we cannot get this to work as we cannot see how we can access this information. Within initApp.as currentState is accessed via "this.currentState". This does not work in the class which is instatiated within initApp.as. The following error is thrown: "Access of undefined property currentState." Anyone know how this can be solved?

  • Dev Environment Tests Not 100% Compatible with Staging/Production in Rails

    We use a bunch of specific apps/APIs that (unfortunately) differ quite a bit from dev to staging/production. We use tests and continuous integration at each stage, but in dev, the tests fail annoyingly (throwing dialogs, etc - thanks Windows for the 64-bit notification!). I hate to write custom code, but are there some best practices for how to allow a subset of testing in ruby/rails - or for patching out specific tests when you're running on Windows? Some specific situations that: Identify.exe does not support 64-bit Windows and throws a dialog. Sethostname is not supported, and throws an error (at least it's command line).

    When compiling the below, the program seem to crash. However, there is no error in the compiling process. ... int *x; *x = 3; printf("%d", *x); ... From what I know, this program initializes the pointer *x to an integer value, and subsequently assigns the value of 3 to the deferenced pointer *x. So why does the program crashes? If I do this instead, the program can work normally. ... int *x, y; y = 3; x = &y; printf("%d", *x); ... So, what seems to be the problem with the skipping of the y variable, and instead, assigning the pointer *x directly to an integer value?

    I have a model, view and controller not interacting correctly, and I do not know where the error lies. First, the controller. According to the Code Igniter documentation, I'm passing variables correctly here. function view() { $html_head = array( 'title' => 'Estimate Management' ); $estimates = $this->Estimatemodel->get_estimates(); $this->load->view('html_head', $html_head); $this->load->view('estimates/view', $estimates); $this->load->view('html_foot'); } The model (short and sweet): function get_estimates() { $query = $this->db->get('estimates')->result(); return $query; } And finally the view, just to print the data for initial development purposes: <? print_r($estimates); ?> Now it's undefined when I navigate to this page. However, I know that $query is defined, because it works when I run the model code directly in the view.

  • Cannot find symbol - variable

    I'm new to Java, and I'm trying to get user input, store each line of input as a variable and then return each value so that it can be passed on somewhere else. When I try and compile it is telling me that it can't find the variable magnitude. I'm assuming it won't find the others either. I'm guessing that this is because I've declare the variables inside of the "try" but don't know how to get it so that the return statement accepts them.   • How to suggest changes as a recently-hired employee ?

    Hi, I was recently hired in a big company (thousands of people, to give an idea of the size). They said they hired me because of my rigor and because I was, despite my youngness (i'm 25), experienced as a C/C++ programer. Now that I'm in, I can see that the whole system is old and often uses obsolete technologies. There is no naming convention (files, functions, variables, ...), they don't use Version Control, don't use exceptions or polymorphism and it seems like almost everybody lost his passion (some of them are only 30 years old). I'd like to suggest somes changes but i don't want to be "the new guy that wants to change everything just because he doesn't want to fit in". I tried to "fit in", but actually, It takes me one week to do what I would do in one afternoon, just because of the poor tools we're forced to use. A lot my collegues never look at the new "things" and techniques that people use nowadays. It's like they just given up. The situation is really frustrating. Have you ever been in a similar situation and, if so, what advices would you give me ? Is there a subtle way of changing things without becoming the black sheep here ? Or should I just give up my passion and energy as well ? Thank you.

    I have a method that asynchronously downloads images. If the images are related to an array of objects (a common use-case in the app I'm building), I want to cache them. The idea is, I pass in an index number (based on the indexPath.row of the table I'm making by way through), and I stash the image in a static NSMutableArray, keyed on the row of the table I'm dealing with.   • Display gridview in new window

    Hello all. Just a bit of advice needed really in terms of how I should handle my current scenario: I have a web page that searches for products/category information the results of which are at present displayed in a gridview on the same page. However, said gridview is a bit of a beast and as such, I would like to have a page that the user searches for, a button is pressed and the subsequent gridview is displayed in a new window. Ultimately, I would like the user to be able to make multiple searches so that new windows can have multiple gridviews containing different data sets. My current thinking is to create session variables that can be pulled through onto 'the gridview page'. Having said that, I'm not sure that would work if multiple searches are created? I am also thinking I might be able to create said 'gridview window' using javascript but my concern here is the potential loss of functionality of the gridview i.e. paging, sorting, editing, etc. Does anyone have any thoughts or theories on this? What would be "best practise"? Any thoughts greatly appreciated and taken on board. PS: This is being developed in .net, using c# and LINQ. PPS: I'm a noob so be gentle!!

  • Access reading error when using class member variable

    Hi, I have a class with private member variables declared in a header file. In my constructor, I pass in some filenames and create other objects using those names. This works fine. When I try to add another member variable, however, and initialize it in the constructor, I get an access reading violation. I sent the code to someone else and it works fine on his computer. Any idea what could be wrong?
