• Microsoft Access as a Weapon of War

  A while ago (probably a decade ago, actually) I saw a report on a tracking system maintained by a U.S. Army artillery control unit.  This system was capable of maintaining a bearing on various units in the field to help avoid friendly fire.  I consider the U.S. Army to be the most technologically advanced fighting force on Earth, but to my terror I saw something on the title bar of an application displayed on a laptop behind one of the soldiers they were interviewing: Tracking.mdb Oh yes.  Microsoft Office Suite had made it onto the battlefield.  My hope is that it was just running as a front-end for a more proficient database (no offense Access people), or that the soldier was tracking something else like KP duty or fantasy football scores.  But I could also see the corporate equivalent of a pointy-haired boss walking into a cube and asking someone who had piddled with Access to build a database for HR forms.  Except this pointy-haired boss would have been a general, the cube would have been a tank, and the HR forms would have been targets that, if something went amiss, would have been hit by a 500lb artillery round. Hope that solider could write a good query :)

• Have you Been Missing the 'About This Record' Functionality on the Customer Form...?

  Do you have fond memories of the 'Help -> About This Record'  functionality that used to be available in the old Customer form - when it was a form, and not a java html screen?  Back in Release 11i, we had the ability to identify when the customer record had last been updated and by whom.  When some forms were replaced by Java HTML screens, you could identify some of this information via the 'About this Page' hyperlink at the bottom left hand corner of the HTML page.  You could enable this by enabling the FND: Diagnostics profile option, but many customers found this had an adverse effect on performance and additionally was not user-friendly.   Our customers tell us that this feature was widely used to identify owner/update information in many business processes, including auditing, customer entry/update, research and testing.  There have been various efforts to revert this feature by customising java pages, but this was not fully successful in some cases.  Oracle Support is happy to announce that this functionality has now been included in the Customer screens in Release 12.2 onwards.   You will be able to query the record history at customer level, at site level, at site address levels and for all tabs relating to the customer. • Dynamic Query Generation : suggestion for better approaches

  I am currently designing a functionality in my Web Application where the verified user of the application can execute queries which he wishes to from the predefined set of queries with where clause varying as per user's choice. For example,Table ABC contains the following Template query called SecretReport "Select def as FOO, ghi as BAR from MNO where " SecretReport can have parameters XYZ, ILP. Again XYZ can have values as 1,2 and ILP can have 3,4 so if the user chooses ILP=3, he will get the result of the following query on his screen "Select def as FOO, ghi as BAR from MNO where ILP=3" Again the user is allowed permutations of XYZ / ILP My initial thought is that User will be shown a list of Report names and each report will have parameters and corresponding values. But this approach although technically simple does not appear intuitive. I would like to extend this functionality to a more generic level. Such that the user can choose a table and query based on his requirements. Of course we do not want the end user to take complete control of DB. But only tables and fields that are relevant to him. At present we are defining what is relevant in the code. But I want the Admin to take over this functionality such that he can decide what is relevant and expose the same to the user. On user's side it should be intuitive what is available to him and what queries he can form. Please share your thoughts what is the most user friendly way to provide this feature to the end user.

• An entry-level programmer's best option [on hold]

  I am facing a puzzle and I am not sure the best way to make a decision. In my spare time besides playing video games I got around to develop some games, nothing fancy, just small projects to get a better grasp at programming. After I finished college and got my BA in Computer Science, I got a job as web developer at a small firm. The next few months were very stressful as I had no previous experience and tried my best to make up for it. But after 6 months my boss told me I was inefficient and not very independent and let me go. To my credit, the help from the senior was very limited, I did learn a lot but I have learned by myself. For example they told me to do a UI in BackboneJS and I took me a while but I got it working (even if it was poorly designed). But I managed to do it all by myself because my senior was very busy and he did not have time even for my questions. Now I have found a new job again in web development but I am very afraid of what is going to happen next. I am afraid because I don't want to take the job and then be fired again after a couple of months, I get the feeling that this will be very bad on my CV, job hopping is like a red flag. They want to hire me but I am aware that they are working with new technologies and maybe I will end up not coping with it. So the question is: Should a entry-level programmer be better off with a starting job in QA, testing and work his way from there? I did learn allot from my first job but it was a moral blow when they decided to fire me. I do have a low self-esteem and I know my skills as a programmer are not that great. But I like programming and want to get better and I want to have a long career in it so that basically my pickle. Thank you in advance for the answers.

• Installing Django on Windows

  Ever needed to install Django in a Microsoft Windows environment, here is a quick start guide to make that happen: Read through the official Django installation documentation, it might just save you a world of hut down the road. Download Python for your version of Windows. Install Python, my preference here is to put it into the Program Files folder under a folder named Python<Version> Add your chosen Python installation path into your Windows path environment variable. This is an optional step, however it allows you to just type python in the command line and have it fire up the Python interpreter. An easy way of adding it is going into Control Panel, System and into the Environment Variables section. Download Django, you can either download a compressed file or if you’re comfortable with using version control – check it out from the Django Subversion repository. Create a folder named django under your <Python installation directory>\Lib\site-packages\ folder. Using my example above that would have been C:\Program Files\Python25\Lib\site-packages\. If you chose to download the compressed file, open it and extract the contents of the django folder into your newly created folder. If you’d prefer to check it out from Subversion, the normal check out points are http://code.djangoproject.com/svn/django/trunk/ for the latest development copy or a named release which you’ll find under http://code.djangoproject.com/svn/django/tags/releases/. Done, you now have a working Django installation on Windows. At this point, it’d be pertinent to confirm that everything is working properly, which you can do by following the first Django tutorial. The tutorial will make mention of django-admin.py, which is a utility which offers some basic functionality to get you off the ground. The file is located in the bin folder under your Django installation directory. When you need to use it, you can either type in the full path to it or simply add that file path into your environment variables as well. Hope this helps!

• What is a good Foxit reader equivalent (or other PDF editor)?

  On Windows, I have found Foxit Reader to be quite handy when I need to highlight texts in PDF document, make annotations, etc. etc. Unfortunately, I have not yet found product as user friendly (which also does not corrupt PDF files...) and full-featured as Foxit software... Any recommendations? ** UPDATE ** I just tried the Open Office PDF import extension. It seems to work ok... If anyone used it for a while, I'd appreciate your feedback on that one. Thanks! ** UPDATE ** You can't highlight text with OpenOffice's PDF extension. Doesn't matter, I was reading this thread and found out about Xournal . As it turns out, it's in the repository. It does not natively save in PDF, but once all edits are done, the document can be exported to PDF (and overwrite the old one, just like Gimp with the native .XCE format and original PNG file, for example) I realize that this question is no longer a question in itself, but could be migrated to community wiki. However, feedbacks are still welcome! ** EDIT ** So... to close up this question, I have to say that I adopted Xournal . It is light and works pretty well, even on multi-page PDF documents. • Unity gizmos vs. referenced game objects

  I'm designing a Unity script that I intend to be highly reusable and as easy as possible to setup within the editor. To this end, a number of properties of this script really need some kind of visual representation on screen. It is an unresolved question to me whether the design of the script should require references to placeholder game objects, OR just Vector3's and float's that have associated gizmos drawn for them. Normally a gizmo would be a natural choice, except that Unity gizmos are not directly manipulable (as far as I can tell). Because of this shortcoming I'm having to consider whether depending on references to placeholder game objects is a more designer-friendly approach ultimately, in spite of the extra setup required, and that it might be counter-intuitive when the placeholder game objects disappear at run-time (which my script would do). Is there a community standard or preference here in this case? Can a Unity-experienced game programmer / designer speak to which approach they feel is more intuitive or more convenient to setup, when using a 3rd party script? Or is this just splitting hairs as long as I ship an example prefab with my script?

• Graphical Interface and Object Selection/Manipulation

  I have a project I want to try to implement, but I'm kind of stuck on how to get started. I know there are probably a lot of resources that I can look at, but I'm really just stuck on what to even search for and where to begin. Basically, I have a program written in Java that separates 3D coordinates from a 3D reconstructed model into different objects. I then want to be able to perform a logistic regression on these objects to determine if they are type A or type B. But first, I need to classify a training set of objects as type A or B by hand. I don't know ANYTHING about graphing or user interfaces in Java, so I have been plotting the coordinates of a given object in MATLAB so that I can visualize the object and assign it a type. Now, as I am trying to make this program more "user friendly" I want to create an interface in Java where I can simply graph all the coordinates of the objects from the entire 3D model (on the same graph). I then want to be able to click on the each object and assign it to be either of type A or type B. I hope this description makes sense and someone can point me in the direction of something that will help me. I'm sorry if some of this terminology is off; I'm a bit new to software development. P.S. If anyone also has some tips on implementing logistic regression in Java, I'm sure I'll need them down the road :).

• How can I redirect all files in a directory that doesn't conform to a certain filename structure?

  I have a website where a previous developer had updated several webpages. The issue is that the developer had made each new webpage with new filenames, and deleted the old filenames. I've worked with .htaccess redirects for a few months now, and have some understanding of the usage, however, I am stumped with this task. The old pages were named like so: www.domain.tld/subdir/file.html The new pages are named: www.domain.tld/subdir/file-new-name.html The first word of all new files is the exact name of the old file, and all new files have the same last 2 words. www.domain.tld/subdir/file1-new-name.html www.domain.tld/subdir/file2-new-name.html www.domain.tld/subdir/file3-new-name.html ect. We also need to be able to access the url: www.domain.tld/subdir/ The new files have been indexed by google (the old urls cause 404s, and need redirected to the new so that google will be friendly), and the client wants to keep the new filenames as they are more descriptive. I've attempted to redirect it in many different ways without success, but I'll show the one that stumps me the most RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} !^subdir/.*\-new\-name\.html RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} !^subdir/$ RewriteRule ^subdir/(.*)\.html$ http://www.domain.tld/subdir/$1\-new\-name\.html [R=301,NC] When visiting www.domain.tld/subdir/file1.html in the browser, this causes a 403 Forbidden error with a url like so: www.domain.tld/subdir/file1-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name.html I'm certain it's probably something simple that I'm overlooking, can someone please help me get a proper redirect? • Ternary and Artificial Intelligence

  Not much of a programmer myself, however I have been thinking about the future of AI. If a fully functional AI is programmed in a binary environment as is used in current computing, would that create a bit of a black and white personality? As in just yes/no, on/off, 1/0? I will use the Skynet computer from the Terminator series as a bad analogy; it is brought online and comes to the conclusion that humanity should just be destroyed so the problem is resolved, basically its only options were; fire the missiles or not. (The films do not really go into what its moves would be after doing such a thing, but that goes into the realms of AI evolution so does not really fit with this question.) It may also have been badly programmed. Now, the human mind has been akin to a ternary system which allows our "out of the box" thinking along with all the other wonderful things our minds can do. So, would it not be more prudent to create a functional ternary system and program an AI using it so the resulting personality would be able to benefit from the third "maybe" (so to speak) option? I understand that in binary there are ways to get around the whole yes/no etc. way of things, however the basic operations are still just 1's and 0's. Again with using the above bad Skynet analogy; if it could have had that third "maybe" option as part of its core system, it may have decided to not launch due to being able to make sense of the intricacies of human nature and the politics of such a move etc. In effect, my question is; Would an AI benefit more from ternary computing as opposed to binary due to the inclusion of -1, or 2, dependent on the system ("maybe," as I call it)?

• Creating a steady rhythm for music-based game in XNA

  I'm looking to develop a game for Windows Phone to explore an idea I had which involves the user building notes into a sequencer while playing a puzzle game. The issue I'm running into is that, while my implementation is very close to being on-beat, there is the occasional pause between beats which makes the whole thing sound sloppy. I'm just not sure how to get around this inside XNA's infrastructure. Currently I'm running this code in the Update method of my GameBoard: public void Update(GameTime gameTime) { onBeat = IsOnBeat(gameTime); [...] if (onBeat) BeatUpdate(); } private bool IsOnBeat(GameTime gameTime) { beatTime += gameTime.ElapsedGameTime.TotalSeconds; if (Math.Abs(beatTime - beatLength) < 0.0166666) { beatTime -= beatLength; return true; } return false; } private void BeatUpdate() { cursor.BeatUpdate(); board.CursorPass((int)cursor.CursorPosition % Board.GRID_WIDTH); } Update checks to see if the time is on beat, and if it is, it calls the BeatUpdate method which moves the cursor over the board (sequencer). The cursor reports its X position to the board, which then plays any notes which are in that position on the sequencer. Notes are SoundEffectInstances, preloaded and ready to play. Oh, and TargetElapsedTime is set to 166666, or 60FPS target. Obviously totaling up the time and then subtracting isn't the most accurate way to go but I can't figure out a way to work within XNA's system in order to overcome this issue. This current system is just horribly unstable. Beats lag and fire too early and it's obvious. I thought about perhaps some sort of threaded solution but I'm not familiar enough with multithreading to figure out how that would work. Any ideas?

• Why does the player fall down when in between platforms? Tile based platformer

  I've been working on a 2D platformer and have gotten the collision working, except for one tiny problem. My games a tile based platformer and whenever the player is in between two tiles, he falls down. Here is my code, it's fire off using an ENTER_FRAME event. • How does 301 redirection work across the network? & should I use it if there is a chance we made need to change the resource back to the original URL?

  I've built a CMS that makes it fairly easy for my client to relocate pages in their site hierarchy. This site has all human-readable and intuitive URLs, so moving a page necessarily means that its URL changes. I am storing records of each resource's past URLs in the data store so that requests for bygone URLs are re-routed to their appropriate successors. I'm warning my clients not to re-arrange the site willy-nilly (for numerous reasons). But nevertheless I suspect there's a chance page moves could get reversed from time to time. So I'm trying to figure out whether 301 or 302 or 307 redirects should be used when serving up pages to requests for out-of-date URLs. I understand the value of using 301 for search engine optimization. But my concern is with this system possibly inadvertently making some pages unavailable to some users QUESTIONS: That is, if the clients move a page at location/URL A to a new location B, then users get the redirect for A to B, and then the clients move the page back to A again, how long can I expect any of those users to keep getting their requests for A redirected to B -- in this case sending them to my friendly 404 page? Is it until an item in their browser history is cleared? Is the redirect somehow cached in routers throughout the internet? How does this work? How long can I expect the 301 redirect to linger out there ?

  I have a site called www.FuneralCoverFinder.co.za. I have about 30 pages on the site and usually have 29 indexed. (Excluding 15 blog posts) They are new. I recently upgraded my entire site and made some redirection changes in my .htaccess file. I have made my url's more SEO friendly (Removing index.php/) and redirecting dead pages to working pages. I have tons of unique content all checked by grammarly and plagium to ensure I have no duplicate content. I have since resubmited my sitemap to Google and now have only one page indexed. It was within a couple of minutes. I usually see results almost immediately after submitting, now it's stuck on 1 page indexed. I assume I might have made errors in the .htaccess file as this was my first attempt. The site runs perfectly and all the url's redirect the way they should. I'm scared I have some or other loop, although the website runs fine. I still see many of my old indexed pages in the SERP's, I'm just worried that the issue with the new sitemap can cause my rankings some harm. My website is pretty SEO optimized onsite. I have about 1500 indexed backlinks and have been building them steadily over about half a year. I would really appreciate some clarity on this matter.

• Help with URL Rewrite

  This is the first time i'm doing this and have been doing some research on it. I have a page that selects some info from a database and displays it with a link to a second page that uses the result to query the database, something like this: $sel=mysql_query("select id, title from thetable "); while($row=mysql_fetch_array($sel)) { $id=$row['id']; $title=$row['title']; echo "<a href='more.php?id=$id'>$title</a>"; } The issue is, in the more.php page, instead of more.php?id=5 to show in the address bar, I want something like more/title Secondly, as it obtains in most sites, I want the link on the referring page to show this friendly url on mouse hover not the more.php?id=5 And I notice in most sites some words like 'a', 'and', 'the' etc are usually removed from the url title(even if there originally), moreover how does one handle the situation where more than one record have the same title. How does one go about achieving this url rewrite with htaccess or whatever method is used. Thanks.

• Predictive firing (in a tile-based game)

  I have a (turn-based) tile-based game, in which you can shoot at entities. You can move around with mouse and keyboard, it's all tile-based, except that bullets move "freely". I've got it all working just fine except that when I move, and the creatures shoot towards the player, they shoot towards the previous tiles.. resulting in ugly looking "miss hits" or lag. I think I need to implement some kind of predictive firing based on the bullet speed and the distance, but I don't quite know how to implement such a thing... Here's a simplified snip of my firing code. class Weapon { public void fire(int x, int y) { ... ... ... Creature owner = getOwner(); Tile targetTile = Zone.getTileAt(x, y); float dist = Vector.distance(owner.getCenterPosition(), targetTile.getCenterPosition()); Bullet b = new Bullet(); b.setPosition(owner.getCenterPosition()); // Take dist into account in the duration to get constant speed regardless of distance float duration = dist / 600f; // Moves the bullet to the centre of the target tile in the given amount of time (in seconds) b.moveTo(targetTile.getCenterPosition(), duration); // This is what I'm after // Vector v = predict the position // b.moveTo(v, duration); Zone.add(bullet); // Now the bullet gets "ticked" and moveTo will be implemented } } Movement of creatures is as simple as setting the position variable. • Isn't Java a quite good choice for desktop applications?

  At present most applications are still developed with C++, painfully. Lack of portability, in compatible libraries, memory leaks, slow compilation, and poor productivity. Even if you pick only a single from these shortages, it's still a big headache. However the surprising truth is that C++ remains the first choice for desktop applications. Compared to C++ Java has lots of advantages. The success in server side development shows that the language itself is good, Swing is also thought to be as programmer friendly as the highly recognized QT framework (No, never say even a single word about MFC!). All the disadvantages of C++ listed above has a solution in Java. "Performance!", Well that might still be the problem but to my experience it's a slight problem. I'd been using Java to decode some screen video and generate key frames. The video has a duration of more than 1 hour. The time spent on an average machine is just 1 minute. With C++ I don't expect even faster speed. In recent days there are many news on the JIT performance improvements, that make us feel Java is gradually becoming very suitable for desktop development, without people realizing it. Isn't it?

  During my tenure at the last company, I didn't let my career stagnate as others have and as time moved along.When at work or home, spend 10% of your time learning something new about some aspect or segway of your job so that your skills are marketable in case you lose it. From experience let me reinforce that it pays off. It pays off in your current job because of the education received and the competence increase of your skills which applied will bring recognition.In these days and times, loyalty to a company is truly at an end. However many companies do care about cultivating their employees which creates a brand of loyalty that can't be replaced. Old companies with the Corp. mentality (or because of the corp. mentality) ever decrease their budgets on organizational sections and thereby do a RIF as a matter of business.The mistakes they make during this process can be risky. But who am I, but a lowly ole programmer, to judge risk. If you are laid off, be friendly with your past manager, and based on simple questions and help, give whatever help you can over the phone even though you are under no obligation to do so.It is also quite possible that there are opportunities to make at home with a new company in the future. Just remember that when inquiring about a position, take advantage of the training that is offered, and keep yourself emotionally and educationally fit.Talk soon,foxjazz
