• Best way to test if a generic type is a string? (c#)

  I have a generic class that should allow any type, primitive or otherwise. The only problem with this is using default(T). When you call default on a value type or a string, it initializes it to a reasonable value (such as empty string). When you call default(T) on an object, it returns null. For various reasons we need to ensure that if it is not a primitive type, then we will have a default instance of the type, not null. Here is attempt 1: T createDefault() { if(typeof(T).IsValueType) { return default(T); } else { return Activator.CreateInstance<T>(); } } Problem - string is not a value type, but it does not have a parameterless constructor. So, the current solution is: T createDefault() { if(typeof(T).IsValueType || typeof(T).FullName == "System.String") { return default(T); } else { return Activator.CreateInstance<T>(); } } But this feels like a kludge. Is there a nicer way to handle the string case?

For example, given a web application, instead of: Writing tests for the back-end, and then more tests in Javascript for the front-end Should I: Write the tests as Selenium macros, which simulate mouse-clicks, etc in the actual browser? The advantages I see in doing it this way are: The tests are written in one language, rather than several They're focussed on the UI, which gets developers thinking outside-in They run in the real execution environment (the browser), which allows us to Test different browsers Test different servers Get insight into real-world performance Thoughts?

  For clarity I am using C# 3.5/Asp.Net MVC 2 Here is what I have done: I wanted the ability to add/remove functionality to an object at run-time. So I simply added a generic object dictionary to my class like this: public Dictionary<int, object> Components { get; set; } Then I can add/remove any kind of .Net object into this dictionary at run-time. To insert an object I do something like this: var tag = new Tag(); myObject.Components.Add((int)Types.Components.Tag, tag); Then to retrieve I just do this: if(myObject.Components.ContainsKey((int)Types.Components.Tag)) { var tag = myObject.Components[(int)Types.Components.Tag] as Tag; if(tag != null) { //do stuff } } Somehow I feel sneaky doing this. It works okay, but I am wondering what you guys think about it as a best practice. Thanks for your input, Daniel

• What is a great resource for learning about the implementation details of .NET generic collections?

  Hi all, I'm interested in understanding the underlying implementation details of generic collections in .NET. What I have in mind are details such as how the collections are stored, how each member of a collection is accessed by the CLR, etc. For collections that are analogous to traditional data structures, such as LinkedList and Dictionary, I think I have an understanding of what's going on underneath. However, I'm not as certain about collections like List (how is set up such that it is both indexable and expandable?) and SortedList, so any leads as to what I could look up to learn more about them would be greatly appreciated.

  I am trying to convert the value of the generic type parameter T value into integer after making sure that T is in fact integer: public class Test { void DoSomething<T>(T value) { var type = typeof(T); if (type == typeof(int)) { int x = (int)value; // Error 167 Cannot convert type 'T' to 'int' int y = (int)(object)value; // works though boxing and unboxing } } } Although it works through boxing and unboxing, this is an additional performance overhead and i was wandering if there's a way to do it directly.   I'm trying to store types in a collection, so that i can later instantiate objects of the types in the collection. But I'm not sure how to do this the best way. What i have so far: List<Type> list = new List<Type>(); list.Add(typeof(MyClass)); var obj = (MyClass)Activator.CreateInstance(list[0]); I would like to have some constrains on the Type, or better yet, just a generic type in the collection instead of an instantiated Type object. • Java generic function for performing calculations on integer, on double?

  Is this possible? Surely if you passed in a double, any sort of function implementation code which casts an object to an Integer would not be able to work unless the cast 'Integer' was specifically used? I have a function like: public static void increment(Object o){ Integer one = (Integer)o; system.out.println(one++); } I cant see how this could be made generic for a double? I tried public static <E> void increment(E obj){ E one = (E)o; system.out.println(one++); } but it didn't like it?

  In some interfaces i wrote I'd like to name generic type parameter with more than one character to make the code more readable. Something like.... Map<Key,Value> Instead of this... Map<K,V> But when it comes to methods, the type-parameters look like java-classes which is also confusing. public void put(Key key, Value value) This seems like Key and Value are classes.   I have a shared printer on Windows XP desktop. When trying to install printer on a network laptop using Windows 7, I get a driver not found on network message. The printer OEM does not have a specific driver for Windows 7, they say to use the Windows 7 driver. I can install the printer as a local printer to the laptop. It does find the driver on the laptop, but I can't install it from the shared desktop.

  We are using Cables Unlimited USB-2925 USB-to-Dual-DB9 serial cables, which use the Moschip MCS7720 controller. We have downloaded the newest driver from http://www.moschip.com/mcs7720.php, but that driver was last updated in 2005. It does not seem to be working with Macs running OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Does anyone know of any updates for this driver, or are there any ways to get the driver to work with Snow Leopard?

• 2Wire USB Network Adapter Not Working With Windows 7

  I installed Windows 7 on a separate drive, and everything works fine, but I can't get the above network adapter to work properly. It's displayed in Device Manager as a USB device, and I have the driver that makes it function in Vista, but when I run the Driver Wizard and direct it to directory where I have the Vista driver, it almost immediately says "Can't install driver." Is there any work around to this?

• ubuntu 10.04 logs itself out overnight

  Every night when I leave work, I lock the screen via ubuntu's "power" button in the top right hand panel. When I come to work in the morning, I'm greeted with the log-in screen. • Preferred print drivers

  As long as I can remember, the preferred print driver has been PCL5 or PCL6. It seems that PCL5 is going the way of the dodo, and PCL6 has more problems than I care to list here (pcl xl errors). It seems that the most reliable print driver these days is the PS (postscript) driver. Just wondering what everyone elses' experience has been and what kind of driver they prefer?

  I have this problem with my graphic-card(video card). Video card constantly crash because driver stopped. This is the massage that i get: Display driver stopped responding and has recovered. Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver , Version 285.62 stopped responding and has successfully recovered. Video card : MSI GTX470 Twin Frozr Motherboard:Asus P8Z68 V-Pro Tried reinstalling drivers but doesn't help. Any ideas what can be ?

• What might cause this ExecutionEngineException?

  I am trying to use Reflection.Emit to generate a wrapper class in a dynamic assembly. Automatic wrapper generation is part of a new open-source library I'm writing called "GoInterfaces". The wrapper class implements IEnumerable<string> and wraps List<string>. So I saved my dynamic assembly to a DLL and used ildasm on it. • How to Connect Crystal Reports to MySQL directly by C# code without DSN or a DataSet

  How can I connect a Crystal Report (VS 2008 basic) to a MySQL DB without using a DSN or a preload DataSet using C#? I need install the program on several places, so I must change the connection parameters. I don't want to create a DSN on every place, nor do I want to preload a DataSet and pass it to the report engine. I use nhibernate to access the database, so to create and fill the additional DS would take twice the work and additional maintenance later. I think the best option would be to let the crystal reports engine to connect to MySQL server by itself using ODBC. I managed to create the connection in the report designer (VS2008) using the Database Expert, creating an ODBC(RDO) connection and entering this connection string "DRIVER={MySQL ODBC 5.1 Driver};SERVER=myserver.mydomain" and in the "Next" page filling the "User ID", "Password" and "Database" parameters. I didn't fill the "Server" parameter. It worked. As a matter of fact, if you use the former connection string, it doesn't matter what you put on the "Server" parameter, it seems the parameter is unused. On the other hand, if you use "DRIVER={MySQL ODBC 5.1 Driver}" as a connection string and later fill the "Server" parameter with the FQDN of the server, the connection doesn't work. How can I do that by code? All the examples I've seen till now, use a DSN or the DataSet method. I saw the same question posted but for PostgreSQL and tried to adapt it to mysql, but so far, no success. In that case: How can I specify the connection string? I haven't tried the second method because it doesn't apply. Does anybody know the solution?

• Weblogic server lib VS instance libext

  Hello, I use weblogic 10. Its provide an Oracle JDBC driver 10.2.0.2 (in the server/lib on weblogic home). Actually someone at work put a long time ago a 10.2.0.3 driver in instance libext folder. But in production we got a jdbc driver stack (nullpointer :O) and by reverse engineering it seems we are using driver 10.2.0.2. We know that we could change the driver in the server/lib of weblogic but i want to understand. Isn't libext supposed to override server libs like META-INF libs override libext? By the way we are in a strange situation: - We have 2 EAR, and for the exact same treatment in those 2, one will sometime throw the oracle driver nullpointer while the other doesn't - I wonder if one ear isn't using 10.2.0.2 while the other is using 10.2.0.3 (i saw a bug fixed that could fit to our problem for this version). - I need to look better but at first sight both ear use the exact same datasource set in weblogic JNDI resources Any idea?
