• Dual booting Windows 7 & 8.1, using the Windows 8 Startup Options Menu, when Windows 8.1 is already installed and you want to add Windows 7

  There are many excellent guides out there that explain how to dual-boot Windows 7 & 8. However, they are written for people starting with a Windows 7 installation and add a Windows 8 installation to separate partition. From what I'm reading, following this procedure will result in Windows 8 installing and configuring the Startup Options Menu with an option to boot Windows 7 & 8. However, in my situation I have a Windows 8.1 machine that I want to install Windows 7 on, and enable dual-boot, where I can use the Startup Options Menu to select the OS to boot. I haven't been able to determine how to do this. From everything I've been able to find, it looks like if I install Windows 7, it is going to take over the boot loader process, and I won't have access to the Windows 8 "Startup Options Menu." This answer suggests I boot to VHD, but notes a drawback: You can't do this if the C:\drive is encrypted using ANY encryption shceme. Be that BitLocker or 3rd party. The location of the .VHD file you are booting to must reside on an unencrypted volume. Well, that's a bummer, because that's exactly what I wanted to do--I wanted my Windows 7 partition to be encrypted, and my Windows 8 partition to also be encrypted. The idea being that when OS was booted, it was completely locked out from accessing data on the other OS's partition. At this point, I'm thinking my only option is to install Windows 7, and then re-install Windows 8, which will give me the dual-boot option... am I right? Or is there a way to make this work. I'm thinking that I would need to figure out a process like this: Configure the Windows Startup Options Menu with a "blank" entry for Windows 7, pointing to an empty partition Insert the Windows 7 installation media, install Windows 7, and somehow restrict it to that partition (i.e., prevent it from "taking over" from the Startup Options Menu" Is this possible, and if so, how can I accomplish this? My concern is that if I simply install Windows 7 to a separate partition, Windows 7 will take over the entire boot process and I won't be able to get to my Windows 8 installation any more.

• Windows repair console, impossible?

  I found an old Windows XP SP2 in my -trash- cd can and tried it on a 30 GB FAT32 partition. Installation went fine till the copying operation was completed and XP asked for reboot. After that either it starts over again or throws invalid disk. Starting over is an infinite loop the only way I see is to choose the "Repair console" but I'm not used to a DOS box. Can anyone help me through this harmful installation?

  I am having a problem with a new installation of MATLAB (2012b) that is cannot find the base enumberation type Simulink.IntEnumType. The specific error text is: specified superclass 'Simulink.IntEnumType' contains a parse error or cannot be found on MATLAB's search path, possibly shadowed by another file with the same name I am quite sure there is no shadowing, so I suspect there is a problem with the installation. Any ideas what could have gone wrong?

• Enable TRIM on FreeBSD 9 Install

  I recently upgraded all of the parts in my FreeBSD 9 server. I purchased an SSD to run as a the root drive - I'd like to enable TRIM on it but the only documentation I can find on it is that it can be enabled using newfs or tunefs. Is there a way to specify flags to newfs during the installation process, and if not, am I going to run into TRIM-related issues if I run tunefs after installation is complete?

• Getting a list of packages installed on CentOS (by command line and on the web)

  When installing CentOS (6.2), it installs a whole bunch of packages, but the installation is often very fast, it's hard to note the names of the packages. I have a couple of questions: 1) I'm guessing I could wait for the entire installation to complete and then query for the list of installed packages on the system. How do I do that? 2) Is there a printed list somewhere on the web, so I don't have to install the OS first just to get the list?

• Remote Scripted Installation of Sun/Oracle JRE

  I'm attempting to automate the installation of a Debian server (debian 6.0 squeeze 64bit). Part of the installation requires the Sun JRE package to be installed. This package has a licence agreement, which has to be accepted. I have a script which uses the following lines to accept and install the JRE: echo "sun-java6-bin shared/accepted-sun-dlj-v1-1 boolean true" | debconf-set-selections apt-get install -y sun-java6-jre This works fine when executing the script locally. However, I need to execute the script remotely using the ssh command, e.g.: ssh -i keyFile root@hostname './myScript' This doesn't work. In particular, it fails on apt-get install -y sun-java6-jre. It would seem that in spite of me setting the licence agreement to accepted, when run remotely in this manner it is ignored. Despite setting the value to true, I still get prompted to manually accept the agreement when I run this command: ssh -i keyFile root@hostname 'apt-get install -y sun-java6-jre' I suspect it is something to do with environment that is taken care of when running a proper terminal session, but have no idea what to try next to fix it. So, what do I have to do to get this command (and hence my deployment script) to run correctly when executing it remotely? Or is there an alternative way that allows me to install the JRE remotely by another means? Edit 0: I have compared the output of env when executed remotely via ssh and when executed via a local terminal session. The only difference between the outputs is that the local terminal session has the additional value TERM=xterm.

• SOGo installation on Mail Server

  We run a normal mail server on cPanel for web-based email. We've just got a request to add Calendar, address book, tasks functions; mobile capabilities (I'm guessing acces via a mobile client/app); public folders etc. On the client-side, we have some people using webmail, some use MS Outlook and some others use Mozilla Thunderbird. Having looked around, I zeroed in on SOGo, Citadel and kolab as options for this. I read through SOGo's official install guide and also checked here and here. However, I see most of the HowTo's ask installation of MySQL/PgSQL, LDAP, Samba etc. While I can manage installation of Samba (if required), I have no idea if installing LDAP, MySQL etc is really required. Also, any guidance as to how to install on a regular mail server would be appreciated. Sorry if this sounds vague. If any more information is required, I'll be happy to give it. Thanks in advance. Edit: This server in question has always been governed via cPanel (to install PHP, MySQL, configure DNS etc). So I am confused if really need LDAP.

• Windows Home Server installation fails because it can't find the DVD drive anymore

  I've got an old Dell Dimension 8300 desktop I decided to convert into a WHS box. I popped in a pair of 1 TB SATA drives, which were recognized fine by the BIOS and the currently installed OS (XP), so I decided to go ahead and install WHS. Near the end of the installation, WHS acts like it can no longer find the DVD drives (either of them, the box has a DVDROM and a DVDRW). The specific error is gives is the "Can't configure storage" error. I've found several forums where people say they get this error if they remove the boot DVD during the installation (at the time of the first reboot). However, I never removed the DVD. After the error, if fails into WHS, so it did mostly install and I can work with WHS. However, it refuses to recognize the network card, video card and while it shows the two DVD drives, any CD/DVD I insert in either drive the system says is corrupted and unreadable, even though none of them are. I've tried several reinstalls both removing and not removing the DVD, but the result is the same regardless. Any other tricks anyone found? If I can't figure this out, maybe I'll just install SBS2008 and fake it up to be similar to WHS with some addin tools. Shouldn't be too hard to create something since WHS is based on SBS2003 anyway.

• Lenovo L440 won't boot into Debian installation CD or Debian-installed HDD

  I have a Lenovo L440 and a Lenovo X61. I want to install Debian Wheezy on thee L440. This morning, the L440 could successfully boot into Windows 8 from it's hard drive. I created an installation of Wheezy on a USB flash drive with Unetbootin. I created an installation CD of Wheezy with Unetbootin. The X61 can successfully boot into the flash drive. The X61 does not have a CD drive. I have attempted to boot from the live CD and the flash drive from the L440's boot menu. In both cases, the screen fades to black, and then returns me to the boot menu with no error message. I removed the L440's hard drive, and installed it in the X61. I then successfully installed Wheezy onto the hard drive from the flash drive. I'm able to boot into the Wheezy hard drive on the L440. After replacing the hard drive into the L440. I booted from the hard drive from the boot menu. Once again, the screen fades to black, and then returns me to the boot menu with no error message. What's the deal?

• Slow boot for OS and external devices

  I have been having this problem intermittently but as of yesterday, it has become more consistent. It originally started when I rebooted my PC at home and the OS (Windows 8) sat in a loop appearing to do nothing while loading. I figured since this was a new installation, that something may have just become corrupted and I decided to reinstall. So I tried to boot off of the thumb drive which had the installation iso and encountered pretty much the same issue. Same with the DVD drive. So, I rebooted once again and left it to load the entire night just to see if it ever would and sure enough this morning, Windows had finally loaded. Authentication had the same roblem albeit not quite as long (took about 5 minutes to authenticate). However, once I was in, everything appeared to be working fine and as quick as normal with the exception of when I tried to scan the C drive for any errors, which ran unbearably slow (45 minutes and before I left for work and was not finished scanning a 64GB SSD drive). I mention that I have had this issue but never when loading the OS. Before it occurred when trying to install windows 7 from a different DVD drive than the one I have now. It took me about 3 hours to do it since I had to wait sometimes 30+ min for each step to finish processing. Does anyone have an idea as to what can cause this? I am assuming it is the motherboard since it is responsible for communication with all the devices I'm having issues with but I cannot find anyone else who has had a problem like this and don't want to drop more money on a MB if it isn't the problem. • Broken Python installation on CentOS 5.8

  I already searched for solution to my problem via Google and stackoverflow's search facility, but haven't found anything related specifically to it. Here's the problem: I needed python 2.7.3 on CentOS 5.8 machine which has only python 2.4.3 preinstalled. Also neither there's the suitable version in it's repositories nor I can upgrade installed version. That's why I decided to build python from source code. But I've made a mistake: instead of make altinstall I did make install thus changing default version of the current installation. It was before I found this article - How to install Python 2.7.3 on CentOS 6.2 . I guess 5.8 and 6.2 versions aren't different to the extent this article is inapplicable. After installation of new python version I installed pip, but once I tried to invoke it, I got "No module named pkg_resources" error. In order to solve this issue I installed setuptools from repository. But it had only led to another error: "Distribution Not Found". My final step was to follow the guide I posted the link to, but I was unable to perform last step: easy_install-2.7 virtualenv command threw "-bash: /usr/local/bin/easy_install-2.7: .: bad interpreter: Permission denied" error. Now when I try to invoke pip or pip-2.7 both commands raise the same error with different names of binaries after "-bash:". Is there any way to fix this problem, so I could install new python version (2.7.3) alongside with the preinstalled one (2.4.3) according to the guide? Any help will be appreciated. P.S.: yum is working fine, although it needs python to function, so I hope the damage I unknowingly caused isn't very severe. Also I'm not a native English speaker, so I apologize for possible occasional grammatical and/or spelling errors.

• Oracle Linux screen freezes during installation

  I was installing Oracle Linux 6.4 on a server, and the screen suddenly froze. Here were the previous steps: I put in the disk, clicked install, checked the disk (no errors), did pre-install setup (clock, root password, host+domain name, etc.), configured two 40GB hard drives in a RAID1 array (no swap, 3100mb encrypted raid partitions, ~100mb ext4 partition mounting to /boot, encrypted ext4 RAID device with mounting to /), selected packages, hit continue. The system did its short preinstall processes, then when to the main installation screen with the long status bar. The installer proceeded like always, but around package 250 out of ~1000, the screen suddenly went black with a text cursor in the upper left corner of the screen and the mouse cursor in its previous place. Neither cursor moved and the only thing that triggered a response was a ctrl-alt-delete that rebooted it. I have run this in VMs before without this issue. Memtest hasn't reported anything, and the media check went smoothly. The machine has supported Ubuntu server without issues before. Any ideas? I have tried booting after that, but the grub bootloader tries to find fd0 for some reason (I have no idea why it would search for the floppy disk). UPDATE My server successfully installed, but won't boot up. I think that, for some reason, it is still using the old bootloader from the previous installation. Any ideas on how to fix that?

  Hi all: I've been trying to programmatically copy custom content type and its custom columns from one web to another for some time now, and every time I get some sort of error or exception. After yet more tries, I received another strange and cryptic exception from Sharepoint after clicking onto a newly copied custom column in a custom content type. It failed to find quite a few content type schema. I'm confused with what Sharepoint is trying to do here, and why a simple process of copying a custom content type from one web to another just wouldn't work in contrast to the information found on the web e.g. this. I've seen this error before when I tried to read a png file* off a server which was actually a **text file, so I assume the Bitmap is not being saved correctly, I got the code here. Can anyone see how the BitmapImage is not being saved correctly? Or why it would be giving me this error?

• Moving from ColdFusion 8 to ColdFusion 10 - Migration Fails

  After having made several attempts to migrate from a ColdFusion 8 Standard server to a ColdFusion 10 Standard server, it feels like I am "almost" there. I'm using the 64 bit installer from Adobe's website. I'm using a Windows Server 2008 (64 bit) server with IIS 7.0. The installation itself goes smooth and the services start and are running. But at the end of the installation it says "ColdFusion Installed, but with errors" and it generates a log file. The log file reads: Migration Error: : Check that "C:\ColdFusion8" is a valid directory and is an installation of either ColdFusion MX 6 or ColdFusionMX 7 and further down says: Status: WARNING Additional Notes: WARNING - Could not migrate settings from previous version of ColdFusion Custom Action: com.macromedia.ia.action.MigrateColdFusionAction Status: ERROR Additional Notes: ERROR - class com.macromedia.ia.action.MigrateColdFusionAction NonfatalInstallException null The applicationHost.config file has new XML referencing the ColdFusion 10 directory, but IIS is still using ColdFusion 8. I'm also going to guess that the settings in the CF Administrator have not been migrated based on the message in the log above. I've followed the instructions on Adobe's site, including ensuring that ASP.NET, CGI, ISAPI Extensions, and ISAPI Filters are all enabled. I've also enabled IIS 6 Metabase Compatibility even though I don't think it's needed. Has anyone else had similar issues with ColdFusion 10 and IIS 7. • How have I locked me out from my Ubuntu VPS?

  I have a Ubuntu Server as VPS (OpenVZ), and yesterday I installed php-fpm, but I guess something went wrong with the installation. Because since then I cannot log in to my server over SSH with PuTTY or using WinSCP. The message I get when connecting is Network error: Connection timed out. Immediately after the installation I was not able to use emacs either, I had to re-install it with apt-get install emacs. I have tried with clearing the firewall and rebooting the server from my web-based "control panel", but it doesn't help. The commands I used for installation of the PHP-fpm was from Installing PHP 5.3, Nginx And PHP-fpm On Ubuntu/Debian. • Dialog box tells me there's a missing driver when installing 64-bit version of Windows 7

  I'm trying to install Windows 7 64-bit on my computer (ASUS P6T Deluxe V2, one 80GB HDD and two 1 TB HDDs). When I'm supposed to select whether I want to Upgrade or do a Custom install, I get a dialog box telling me: Load Driver A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now. Note: If the Windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove it for this step. I've tried to reach this step using a 32-bit installation disc, but that doesn't generate this message at all. Through the command windows (shift-F10) I can reach all of my drives, including my optical drive, without any problems--so what kind of device driver is it the installation wants? I've tried all the obvious drivers on the CD that followed my motherboard, but I can't seem to find the right one. The problem is that I don't know what device I'm supposed to load the drivers for in the first place. Can anyone help me? Edit: It turned out that my downloaded image was corrupted. I borrowed a DVD from a friend of mine, which worked!

• Ignore non-unicode programs language when installing software

  This is something that is driving me nuts for a while and I haven't been able to find a solution for this problem anywhere. I am running Windows 7 and my "Language for non-Unicode programs" setting is set to Russian. I need for some non-unicode software that has a Russian UI. However, for most of my software I prefer to use the English UI. A lot of software out there is multilingual and is too smart for my liking. When installing, it switches the UI to Russian and the software UI stays in Russian after the installation without an option to change that, besides setting the "non-unicode language" to English. It switches back to Russian once I revert the setting and reboot. Most of the time it is driver software, i.e: Intel, HP, etc. How can force the installation to run English and stay that way after install, ignoring the "Language for non-Unicode programs" setting? Now, I understand this might be specific to the installer: MSI, Install Shield, etc. But any solution will be good, even if I have to apply it for every software installation.   I want to install .NET framework 3.5 on a couple of machines that do not have internet access. If I install the "no internet access"-package it still wants to download something. How can I figure out what is missing? Are there other installation packages? Edit: I would present screenshots but I cannot upload anything from here and the shots would be in german. So I present only the text translated back to english... Installing the "full redistributable package": At the bottom of the license agreement page it display this text: Size of download file: 67 MB Appoximate download time: 2h 44min (56KBit/s) 18min (512KBit/s) It shows the text even if I installed Windows Installer 3.1. After agreeing it displays the "Download and Installation Status"-Dialog with a progress bar labeled "Download:" and Status: Connection to server attempted (try X of 5). Total Download Status: 56MB/67MB I tried it in a VM with no network connection. It tries 5 times while the progress bar shows progress. Later the progress bar is labeled "Installation:". Even later it reports problems during setup and provides two buttons "Send Report Later" and "Don't Send". Now here it comes: "Setup completed" and "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 has been deinstalled successfully." (Emphasis is mine) "It is recommended to install current service packs and security updates. More information at Windows Update (link)." Edit2: Installed Service Pack 3, but still no success.

• tightvnc authentication failure

  When I run a tightvnc client to establish a VNC session I sometimes receive an error message that suggests there are repeated failed VNC login attempts or a brute force attack. The message dialog title is "unsupported security type" and the text content is "too many authentication failures, try another connection? yes/no". This problem goes away if I reboot the Ubuntu server and reload the VNC server program and try again. From that point, it will work for multiple VNC sessions. My VNC sessions are typically about 20 minutes. At some time in the future, the problem may recur so it seems correlated to the time the server has been up or the time tightvnc has been loaded. Typically it takes only a day or so before the problem comes back. I am using tightvnc 1.3 on an server running Ubuntu 12.04. The version of vncserver is rather dated because that seems to be all that is available from tightvnc for linux servers. On the client side I use the newest Java-based VNC client (version 2.5) for both Windows access and Ubuntu access. All my VNC sessions are via SSH. I am the only user and I will typically use only the same client computer. How can I stop this problem from recurring? Edit I found the log file. This is a small excerpt of what I am seeing. Essentially, various IPs, not my own, are attempting to connect. • xfx 680i motherboard failure?

  At some point last night we must have had a blip in our power, as the stove clock was blinking like it would had their been... a blip in the power. When I came into my office this morning, my desktop computer was powered down and would not turn on. Cracking the case, I can see a small blue blinking light on the front right corner of the motherboard. Unplugging the power from the PSU causes the blinking to stop. Plugging in the power causes the blinking to resume. Pressing the power button does nothing. Does anyone know what this blinking blue light means? I'm mostly curious now if it's the motherboard that has gone bad, or the power supply. I don't have any other desktop parts to use to troubleshoot these components. Any ideas? My motherboard is an XFX NFORCE 680I SLI INTEL SOCKET 775 DDR2 ( Model #: MB-N680-ISH9 )
