• Conditional Validation with Paperclip difficult

  Hi, I have an "item", which goes through a multi-page creation process. Images are uploaded at step five, and I keep track of the steps by using the attribute "complete". When validating whether an image is attached with paperclip, I get problems using the code below: validates_attachment_presence :pic1, :if => Proc.new { |u| u.complete == "step5"} It seems that I can't access the "complete" attribute, as the active-record object seems to be the paperclip image. Is there a way for me to check at which point in the process I am and validate conditionally? Thanks, Michael

• Partial sorting algorithm

  Hello, Say I have 50 million features, each feature comes from disk. At the beggining of my program, I handle each feature and depending on some conditions, I apply some modifications to some. A this point in my program, I am reading a feature from disk, processing it, and writing it back, because well I don't have enough ram to open all 50 million features at once. Now say I want to sort these 50 million features, is there any optimal algorithm to do this as I can't load everyone at the same time? Like a partial sorting algorithm or something like that?

• Code reviews for larger MVC.NET team using TFS

  I'm trying to find a good code review workflow for my team. Most questions similar to this on SO revolve around using shelved changes for the review, however I'm curious about how this works for people with larger teams. We usually have 2-3 people working a story (UI person, Domain/Repository person, sometimes DB person). I've recommended the shelf idea but we're all concerned about how to manage that with multiple people working the same feature. How could you share a shelf between multiple programmers at that point? We worry it would be clunky and we might easily have unintended consequences moving to this workflow. Of course moving to shelfs for each feature avoids having 10 or so checkins per feature (as developers need to share code) making seeing the diffs at code review time painful. Has anyone else been able to successfully deal with this? Are there any tools out there people have found useful aside from shelfs in TFS (preferably open-source)?

  I added the authlogic_facebook_connect plugin to my project and I'm now having problem running my cucumber test because of a NoMethodError. undefined method `set_facebook_session' for nil:NilClass (NoMethodError) In authlogic_facebook_connect/Session.rb the method "authenticating_with_facebook_connect?" is called as some sort of callback and the controller is defined but is missing the 'set_facebook_session' method. def authenticating_with_facebook_connect? controller.set_facebook_session attempted_record.nil? && errors.empty? && controller.facebook_session end I don't understand why the cucumber test is not loading the controller with this method.   G'day, I've read both of Steve McConnell's excellent Code Complete books "Code Complete" and "Code Complete 2" and was wondering if people have any other suggestions for commenting code. My commenting mantra could be summed up by the basic idea of expressing "what the code below cannot say". While enjoying this interesting blog post by Jeff about commenting I was still left wondering "When coding, when do you feel a comment is required?" Edit: Oops. Seems to be a duplicate of this question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/121945/how-do-you-like-your-comments so sorry for the noise. Thanks to my, seemingly, SO shadow for pointing it out - wouldn't have thought I was that interesting. Now off to read the original post and see if it is relevant. Edit: I meant to emphasise the best appraoch to ensure that your comments will stay in step with the code. Maybe expressing an intent rather than the mechansim for instance.

• VS2010 method comment block pretty format.

  I have just installed the lastest RC of VS2010, which for me represents a shift from VS2008. A new comment formatting feature that I was looking forward to appears to be missing. About 6 months ago I read a Scott Gu blog post that mentioned a new VS2010 feature that would format /// style method comment blocks into more readable formatted regions inline with other code. The Scott Gu blog did not provide a screen shot but I was expecting the VS2010 editor to remove the XML tags from the /// method comment block and render just the essential text comment. Was this feature pulled during the Beta, or is there an option switch urking somewhere?

• Is it possible to drag windows between workspaces when using Compiz?

  When I used Metacity, I could drag windows between workspaces using the small icon view of my workspaces. I recently started using Compiz for all the cool desktop effects, however this drag and drop feature isn't working. I use the cube effect for switching workspaces, but I noticed the wall effect doesn't allow it either. Is this just a missing feature from Compiz or is there a setting somewhere that I can enable it? I know that I can enable dragging windows across edges to the next workspace, and the expose feature to drag windows between workspaces. However, the drag and drop on the icon view is really powerful, and I would love to have it back along with all the great Compiz special effects.

• Recovering 'old commits' from multiple git rebases

  I am aware of this question, but not to sure how to map it to my current situation. (Rebase is scary, undoing rebase is double scary!) I started out with several different feature branches of my master: master x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x \ \ \ FeatureA 1-2-3 \ \ FeatureB A-B \ FeatureC X-Y-Z I wanted to merge them all together and check they worked before merging back onto the top of master, so I did a: git checkout FeatureB git rebase FeatureA git mergetool //etc git rebase --continue Then git checkout FeatureC git rebase FeatureB git mergetool //hack hack git rebase --continue Which leaves me with master x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x \ FeatureA 1-2-3 \ FeatureB A'-B' \ FeatureC X'-Y'-Z' Then I corrected some bits that didn't compile properly, and got the whole feature set to an acceptable state: master x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x \ FeatureA 1-2-3 \ FeatureB A'-B' \ FeatureC X'-Y'-Z'-W My problem is that my colleagues tell me that we're not ready for FeatureA. Is there any way for me to keep all my work, but also revert to a situation where I can just rebase FeatureC on to Feature B?

• Sharepoint Designer Workflow with multiple tasks in sequence

  I have a multi-step Sharepoint workflow in task list A that starts when a new task is created in that list and creates a task in another list, B. When that task in list B is completed, I would like the workflow in list A to create another task in list C. I am using Sharepoint Designer 2007 to build all of this and at the moment I have this represented by multiple steps. So, step one is to create the task in the other list, and store its ID as a variable. Step 2 is conditional on a value in the task created by step one being marked complete, and it creates a task in the next list, and so on. However, when I run the workflow, it marks its status as complete as soon as the item in the first list is completed, and does not go on to create the task outlined in Step 2 of the workflow. I would like to know why the workflow is marking itself complete at the end of step one, and why the subsequent steps are not executed. Thanks in advance for your help.

• Explaining training method for AdaBoost algorithm

  Hi, I'm trying to understand the Haar feature method used for the training step in the AdaBoost algorithm. I don't understand the math that well so I'd appreciate more of a conceptual answer (as much as possible, anyway). Basically, what does it do? How do you choose positive and negative sets for what you want to select? Can it be generalized? What I mean by that is, can you choose it to find any kind of feature that you want no matter what the background is? So, for example, if I want to find some kind of circular blob - can I do that? I've also read that it is used on small patches for the images around the possible feature - does that mean you have to manually select that image patch or can it be automated to process the entire image? Is there matlab code for the training step? Thanks for any help...

• Using ScriptCombining through a ScriptManager on a Master Page

  ASP.NET 3.5 SP1 adds a great new ScriptCombining feature to the ScriptManager object as demonstrated on this video. However he only demonstrates how to use the feature with the ScriptManager on the same page. I'd like to use this feature on a site where the scriptmanager is on the master page but can't figure out how to add the scripts I need for each page programmatically to the manager.   Hello all, Wer'e developing an ASP.NET C# application, which will contain an authentication system that authenticates users in multiple levels (user, admin, super-admin, etc.). Our idea is NOT to use the built in ASP.NET forms authentication feature. Our plan is to create a whole 'new' system for it- based on the Session object, and SQL database contains users' info such as username & password. Is there any SERIOUS different between our idea to the Forms authentication feature? What security risks do we take? How do we solve them?   Hi all, I've installed HTTP Activation and Non-HTTP Activation IIS's features for Framework.NET 3.0 under WCF Activation feature. I'm trying to remove http and https bindings (under default Web Site) from IIS Manager and leave others (net.tcp, net.msmq, etc.) but if I close and re-open IIS manager I not found any icons in the right panel (Feature View). The only feature I see is IIS Manager Permissions. It's right I don't see them? I hope you can help me. Thank you in advance!

Please Wait"; } What I want to do is when the app has finsihed loading I want to change the preloaders text to "configuring". Then I want to go and do a bunch of setup stuff in my code. Once I've done all the setup I wanted how can I get the Preloader to dispatch its Event.complete from else where in my code? I tried Application.application.preloader but it comes up null. So I guess my question really is how to access a preloader from anywhere in my application. Would a better approach be to have all setup classes as members of my preloader class?

  As a software developer one sometimes gets feature requests that seem to be in some kind of morally grey area. Sometimes one can deflect them, or implement them in a way that feels less 'evil' - sometimes - on reflection - while the feature request 'feels' wrong theres no identifiable part of it that actually causes harm. Sometimes one feels a feature is totally innocent but various anti virus products start tagging one as malware. For example - I personally consider EULAs to (a) hopefully be unenforceable and (b) a means by which rights are REMOVED from consumers. However Anti Virus scanners frequently mark as malware any kind of download agent that does not display a EULA. Which to me is the result of a curious kind of double think. What I want to know is - are there any online (or offline) resources that cover evil software development practices? How can I know if a software practice that I consider dodgy is in fact evil enough to consider fighting?

  Is there a way to move a sequential set of commits from one (local) branch to another? I have searched quite a bit and still haven't found a clear answer for what I want to do. For example, say I have this: master A---B---C \ feature-1 M---N---O---P---R---Q And I have decided that the last 3 commits would be better off like this: master A---B---C \ feature-1 M---N---O \ f1-crazy-idea P---R---Q I know I can do this, and it does work: $ git log --graph --pretty=oneline (copying down sha-1 ID's of P, R, Q) $ git checkout feature-1 $ git reset --hard HEAD^^^ $ git checkout -b f1-crazy-idea $ git cherry-pick <P sha1> $ git cherry-pick <R sha1> $ git cherry-pick <Q sha1> I was hoping that instead there would be a more concise way to do this, possibly with git rebase, although I haven't had much luck.   I was looking at the amazon website and was wondering how one of the feature would have been implemented. The feature : what customers buy after viewing a particular item. If i were to develop such a feature i would probably generate a session id for each user session and store the session id-page id combination in a log file. and if a book is bought set a separate flag for the session id-page id. A separate program can then be run on the log file periodically, to identify the groups that were bought together/viewed together and that information can be stored in a persistent file. This is ofcourse a simple solution without taking into consideration the distributed nature of the servers - but would this suffice or can you help me identify a better design.

  I would like to install a feature according to the brand. My only problem is a warning I get at compilation time: The 'Level' attribute is invalid - The value '$(var.brand.FeatureLevel)' is invalid according to its datatype 'http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema:integer' - The string '$(var.brand.FeatureLevel)' is not a valid Integer value. Is there a way to fix this warning? Can I define integer variable? I couldn't find a way...

  I've tried reading the documentation but it is rather impenetrable so I'm hoping someone may have a simple answer. I want to define a new 'variant', based on 'debug', which just adds some macro definitions to the compiler command line, eg "-DSOMEMACRO". I think I may be able to do this as a "sub-variant" of debug, or else just define a new variant copying 'debug', but I'm not even sure where to do this. It looks like feature.jam in $BOOST_BUILD_DIR/build may be the place. Perhaps what I really want is simply a new 'feature' but it's still not clear to me exactly what I need to do and where, and I don't know if a 'feature' allows me to direct the build products to a different directory to the 'debug' build. Any suggestions will be appreciated. (In case you're wondering, I have to use bjam since it has been adopted as our corporate standard.)

  I'm trying to deserialize JSON which I'm getting from an external source into an Entity Framework entity class using the following code: var serializer = new JavaScriptSerializer(); IList<Feature> obj = serializer.Deserialize<IList<Feature>>(json); The following exception is thrown: Object of type 'System.Collections.Generic.List1[JustTime.Task]' cannot be converted to type 'System.Data.Objects.DataClasses.EntityCollection1[JustTime.Task]'. My model is simple: The Feature class has a one-to-many relation to the Tasks class. The problem appears to be the deserializer is trying to create a generic List to hold the collection of tasks instead of an EntityCollection. I've tried implementing a JavaScriptConverted which would handle System.Collections.Generic.List but it didn't get called by the deserializer.

  Hi All, Does any one know, or is it possible to do one time payment, with paypal in android ? Consider the senario. Buyer purchases installs free application. Clicks on paypal module and makes in-app payment, purchases feature successfully. Buyer deletes application. All information including the feature purchase enty in database is deleted. Buyer reinstalls the application. Here is the catch, if he wants to use the feature he will have to do a re-purchase. Which I wann to avoid in my application. This is taken care in iPhoen in-app purchase. That is if a buyer has already purchased an feture or in-app item, and if he trys to repurchase it (item has been set to one time payment) , the in-app purchase transaction will succeed without the user actually having to repay for the item. Is there an solution for this can anyone help.

  For Android application developers regarding 2.2 and the new App 2 SD feature. Android 2.2 now allows you to have your applications installed onto the SD card instead of using the phones internal memory. Will any of you be adding this feature onto your next release and if so what is your app? I know applications built with the App 2 SD function cannot be used when the SD card is mounted. Maybe 2 versions of each app on the market would work out great for those that would need an app while the phone is mounted. What do you think about this idea? Are you aware of any other negative issues that arise from an application built for this feature?

• MATLAB: draw centroids

  Hello - my main question is given a feature centroid, how can I draw it in MATLAB? In more detail, I have an NxNx3 image (an rgb image) of which I take 4x4 blocks and compute a 6-dimensional feature vector for each block. I store these feature vectors in an Mx6 matrix on which I run kmeans function and obtain the centroids in a kx6 matrix, where k is the number of clusters and 6 is the number of features for each block. How can I draw these center clusters in my image in order to visualize if the algorithm is performing the way I wish it to perform? Or if anyone has any other way/suggestions on how I can visualize the centroids on my image, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
