• Safari proxy bypass for IPv6

  I'm a first-time n00b on Mac (but have been doing computers since before PC's). This Mac has 2 VLANs, vlan0 in IPv4, vlan1 in IPv6. Safari can surf via IPv4 squid proxy OK. Safari can surf via IPv6 natively, if I switch off the proxy. How do I set up the Settings - Network - Interface - Advanced - Proxies to "bypass" IPv6? Current Settings include variations along the lines of ... "*.local, 10.0.0.0/8, 192.168.0.0/16, 172.16.0.0/12 , ::, ipv6 " but don't work as expected. I want Safari to go out on its own with IPv6, not crash at the proxy with "malformed URL" Thanks, //rhi

• Client-based program to track response time for online webservice

  I am helping a customer with general IT support, and they have a problem with a hosted web-based system being slow. The provider of the system blames the client's computer, and the client calls me for help. I blame the provider, but it is hard to get them to do something about it without rock-solid evidence. And every time the provider comes around for a TeamViewer session, everything of course runs smoothly. Does there exist a client program or browser plugin that tracks statistics about response time for specific web services?

• Ad Agency storage/file server +backup needed (NAS or something else?)

  Looking for a "this is all you need" recommendation. We're a small ad agency with both mac & pcs that access and share files from a 3 yr old Windows 2000 box (no server software). We currently have 1TB on the "server" and back it up to 2 different Seagate Free Agent Pro 1TB external drives. But we're low on space and are looking for something that's bigger, that we can still access from Mac & PC, EASY backup system, secure from viruses, firewall enabled. Not sure if a NAS will work or if we should have a real server. We don't really get on that box except to restore files, or run Norton on it. I hope I've provided enough for a general recommendation. • Mac OS X: pushing all traffic through a VMWare VM

  I want to set up an Astaro (Sophos) UTM in a Virtual Machine. The Setup should be at the end the following: Cable Modem (one IP adress) | [Ethernet] Sophos UTM (running as VM [VMWare Fusion 5] on the MacMini) | [WIFI] Airport Express v2 (for sharing Local Network to wireless and wired clients) 1)| [WIFI] 2)| [Ethernet over Thunderbolt Ethernet Adapter]* Clients MacMini (Local File Server) *To have the Mini also protected behind the UTM So the setup process for the UTM works fine, but then the problems start: I just have one external IP (from my cable modem provider)== So if I put the VM in briged mode my Internet connection drops, because the MacMini also has its IP adress. If I put the VM to NAT mode the Mini itself is not protected by the UTM So: is there a way to hide the en0 interface(Ethernet) and the en1 interface (Wifi) from the MacMini, so that they not even appear in System Preferences Network section but are available to the VM? That way the Mini must connect to the en2 interface (Thunderbolt adapter) to make any Internet/LAN connection and I just use the given single IP from the Cable Modem. Thaks for any suggestions...   I've been using a Mac at work for a couple of months now, but after getting used to it there still are some annoyances that I'm trying to eliminate. If I have multiple windows open, clicking on a non-active window will activate it - but the application does not register the click. Coming from a Windows background, this makes the UI feel very sluggish, as I feel I'm spending far more clicks than I should. Is there a way to configure this behavior? I know there are utilities available for Windows to tweak things like this, are there any similar tools available for Mac OS?

  Is there anyway to have emails automatically placed into folders where the original email resides? Situation: I sort my emails into various folders based on clients. However, when a new email comes in that was a reply to a previous it goes to my inbox versus going into the client folder. I know the typical answer is "just create a rule for that client". The problem with that is my clients change often, and creating a new rule that often is infeasible. I was hoping there might be some way to have a "follow source email" option. That way, when I move email A into folder X, all subsequent replies to email A will automatically be placed in folder X. Any ideas?

• 1 iPhone, 2 (potentially 3) Macs......& Google Apps Sync?!

  Currently I use a beast of a G5 Mac at work for all my software/web development, an iMac G5 at home for personal use & a MacBook Pro for when i'm on the go. At work we make heavy use of all the Google Apps features such as calendar & docs etc. We all have an address book (local mac application) that gets synced with a list of contacts stored on our mail server. I want to be able to integrate the Google Apps calendar with my iPhone calendar (or even just iCal - which i can then sync to the iPhone). Essentially I want all three Macs to have the Google calendar synced to their version of iCal including the iPhone. I've heard that Google Sync handles something along these lines but i'm unsure if it's going to fulfill my needs? I'm trying my best to avoid having to use MobileMe..... • No picture on HDMI Output from a Pioneer 921 AV Receiver to a Projector

  I am trying hard to tackle a what seemed to be simple problem if wiring my setup together. The setup: Mac Mini (2011) with HDMI Output Pioneer 921 K AV Receiver Acer HD Projector (HDMI) When I hook up my Mac Mini directly to the Projector with a 30 foot (10 meter) HDMI Cable everything is just fine. The picture is sharp and the colors brilliant. However, when I send HDMI to the receiver (into the BD HDMI Input) then I get absolutely no HDMI output to the projector, it keeps saying "no signal". Is there perhaps some magic combination of setup buttons that may help me resolve this problem?

  I have a Ubuntu Server 9.04 image set up in VMWare Fusion 3.0.0, using the NAT option for the guest's network connection. From the Mac host, I can ssh to the linux guest just fine using it's IP address, but I would like to be able to refer to it by hostname for connivence. ie: mac-host:~ ssh [email protected] I had a similar setup using Parallels a couple years ago, but I don't remember how it was set up. It may have "just worked". Any suggestion on how to make this work?

  I have a att router and there is an unknown device connected to my network. I can't seem to kick it off because of how att's router settings are created which is kind of dumb. I am able to see its local ip and mac address. I am on a mac with snow leopard. How can I get more information on the device with the information that I have? I want to see what kind of device it is, I have checked all devices that are connected to the router and none seem to match the local ip that is connected. I have WPA encryption setup with a strong password.

  We have a LAN and the router is the DHCP server. We have a server with Windows SBS 2008, it has the IP address 192.168.1.2 while the router has the IP address 192.168.1.1. I have set "DNS Relay" on the router to 192.168.1.2. I have tried to add a client computer to the SBS domain by visiting http://connect from the client computer. But that page doesn't exist. I can visit http://192.168.1.2/ then the default startpage for IIS7 is shown. I'm logged in as a local Administrator on the computer that I tries to add to the domain. How do I add the client computer to the SBS 2008 domain? The router is an D-Link DFL 200, and I have now set the "DNS Relay" to "Use address of LAN interface" instead of a specific IP-address. But it doesn't work.

• Block a machine from accessing the internet

  After some confirmation that I have thinking right in this scenario. We have a number of wired and wireless machines which presently have direct internet access. I also have a Linux (Ubuntu) server which is used as a file server for the network. Essentially I would like to be able to turn internet access on and off for machines. My plan is to block these machines by MAC address at the router. I would then set up a proxy server on the Linux box (ie Squid) so that the machines I wish to restrict can access the internet via the proxy. As I can adjust access via ACLs in squid, I would be able to switch on or off a machines access to the internet without having to further adjust the router's MAC rules. And of course I could go further and create a few scripts to assist with this admin task. Does this seem sound and have I over looked anything? Any help greatly appreciated. Simon.

  I used to access all my Windows XP shared files on my Mac using Finder -- Window -- Connect to server. Now all of a sudden, an error crops up when I try to connect. I get the error "There was a problem connecting to the server "192.168.1.*" The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your internet connection and then try again. How can I remove this error and access my shared files from my Mac? P.S my network connections is fine.

• Need to know who is hogging my bandwidth?

  I have an ethernet connection to my iMac and with Internet sharing I am broadcasting the wireless network from my mac rather than using a wireless router. I use it to connect other devices wirelessly to the internet. But this makes all the traffic flow through my iMac. I wanted a way to analyze the traffic so that I know what connected devices are hogging the bandwidth at a given time and from which websites? I installed wireshark for mac and played around a little but it seems like an overkill when you first look at it. Can someone please help with few instructions to get what I need or any other way other than using wireshark? Thanks Dev.

  I was just wondering if anyone knew how to/or knew of a good guide to setting up mac Time Machine backup server on a fedora 17 machine. I recently ran into an issue with my HDD and lost all of my data, so I don't want it to ever happen again, as it was quite traumatising, haha! I just want to be able to back all of my data up on my fedora machine from my mac, at scheduled times when I connect to my home network. • Constant prompts for credentials from one Mac Outlook 2011 client

  The majority of my Exchange users are all on Windows 7 and have no issues (at least using Outlook...) but a subset of the executives are ardent Mac users running Outlook 2011 for OS X. One of these clients is prompted every 5-10 minutes for credentials. Ticking the checkbox to remember credentials does not fix the situation. Mac version is 10.7.2. I have already removed and rebuilt the EWS virtual directory on my Client Access server. Outlook anywhere is set to NTLM authentication. None of the Microsoft clients are experiencing this issue. What else can I do to make this issue go away?

  I'm about to completely re-pave my Mac Mini but the DVD drive has died on me which means I can't boot from the installation media. I know I can boot from a USB stick but I don't have one available, what are my options given the following hardware at hand? Netgear ReadyNAS Duo NAS (NIC or USB only, no Firewire) USB HDD (no Firewire) I've ripped an ISO of the installation disk, can I somehow get the Mini to boot from this image using one of the above? If I decide not to re-pave but just upgrade, can the Mac be upgraded just using an OSX 10.6 ISO image on its disk?

  I recently used disk utility in my mac book pro to format my 8 GB pen drive to install OS X. After that I formatted my pen drive from disk utility as FAT32 so that I would be able to use it in windows. But in windows the pen drive does not show up. When I right click on my computer and click manage and then disk management, the pen drive is listed there, but it doesn't show up in the explorer and I cant use it. I tried to do many things but I'm still not being able to use it in windows though I can use it in Mac OS X. Could anyone help? Thanks.

  Hi Guys, I am getting an error as shown in the screenshot. This started happening after I updated my Mac OS X from 10.6.5 to 10.6.6. Problem is that Finder stops working 5 mins after the restart and all the other aplications including Xcode 3.2.5, iPhone simulator, safari,etc stops working. • VMware Fusion on MacBook Pro running Vista, not working after installing a wireless card

  A tech friend installed VMware on my Mac so I could use my Windows programs as well. It worked great until I inserted my Sierra 881 USB wireless card while in VMware trying to get to the internet while on the road. It worked briefly, then the AT&T Communication manager won't respond when you click on the icon, I can't open Network and Sharing center, I can't sync my palm - shows it can't connect. Looks like it messed up several things, along with not being able to connect to the internet while in windows. This wireless cards works directly from the Mac - but I need internet while in Windows for some work I am doing. How do I uninstall this - when I try - it just gives me an endless reloading circle - not doing anything. I really need to sync my palm and get back to the way it was. I don't know much about VMware at all and I don't have access to my friend right now to get help.
