• Problem with Windows Service and network printers.

  I have a Windows Service application that every now and then should print some documents. As far as I know, to print those documents, my service must be run with a user account other than Local Service or Network Service. So i have created a user account and added that to the Administrators group and ran the service with it. With locally installed printers, I don't have any problems because those printers are automatically installed for all accounts. To be able to print with the network printers, I have created another application that syncs the installed printers of the currently logged in user with the user account that my service uses with the rundll32.exe printui.dll,PrintUIEntry command. In Vista and Windows7 I don't have any problems with the syncing of the printers because every time that a printer should be installed the authentication window will open and it asks for the appropriate user account to install that printer (The service user account is not created on the network printers computers) but in XP a find dialog with the "Connecting to {printername}" caption will appear and stops responding, or sometimes it installs the printer but every time service tries to print, a Win32Exception with "A StartDocPrinter call was not issued" message will throw and in the user account that runs the sync application a duplicate printer will be shown and I couldn't delete those printers unless with force (using registry). Am I doing the right thing for printing documents with Windows Services at all? If yes, how can I solve the above-mentioned problem? And if not, what the heck should I do? Thanks.

• Nagios service active only when other service is failing

  Is is possible to define service to be active only the times while other service is failing? Consider following example: 2 hosts available: HostA (primary) and HostB (backup). Nagios service, which monitors amount of active connections to the host: gives OK when amount of connections to host 0 gives FAILURE when amount of connections to host = 0 If setup nagios service to monitor both hosts: HostA and HostB - it will give me OK for HostA (while it is primary and all connections normally goes to it) and FAIL for HostB (while it is backup and will receive no connections while HostA is alive). Can I make the nagios service for HostB somehow depend on sevice of HostA and give no failures (or maybe be inactive) up to the moment the service of HostA starts failing?

• Oracle to Join OECD Urban Roundtable for Mayors and Ministers

  Oracle is pleased to announce that Bastian Fischer, vice president and general manager for EMEA, Oracle Utilities, will participate in the 2010 Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) Urban Roundtable for Mayors and Ministers on 25 May in France. The roundtable, hosted by OECD Secretary General Angel Gurría, will help determine how cities can contribute to green growth incentives and address the challenges to success. The OECD is developing a global Green Growth Strategy that will identify policies and approaches that can shift production and consumption towards a clean, low-carbon and sustainable economy. Already, more than 500 European cities have signed up to the 2020 carbon pledge to reduce carbon emissions by 20 per cent in ten years. This initiative is driving the adoption of innovative technologies such as the smart gird, which deliver substantial benefits to support this mission by allowing utilities to manage their distribution grids more efficiently, reducing emissions and lowering the risk of outages. A successful smart grid infrastructure will allow green cities to manage their energy usage and succeed in their pledge to meet European targets for carbon reduction, which will undoubtedly be a discussion topic at the roundtable. • GlassFish Extension for Oracle JDeveloper

  We just release a new version of Oracle JDeveloper - 11.1.2.3. One new feature here is built-in support for GlassFish. This include the ability to create an "application server" connection to GlassFish and then deploy to that server with one click from inside JDeveloper. You can use this for deploying Oracle ADF Essentials application on Glassfish, but you can also use it to deploy any Java EE application you build in JDeveloper on GlassFish. However, if you are planning to work with GlassFish and JDeveloper on a more regular basis as your development server, then you might find my new extension useful. The new extension allows you to start and stop an external GlassFish instance, as well as start it in debug mode (which will allow JDeveloper to remotely debug your application as it runs on the server. I also added a button that will invoke the web admin console of Glassfish. • How to Generate XBRL from Oracle's Applications

  I've been getting quite a few emails asking how Oracle supports XBRL. As of June 2011, all public US companies were required to produce XBRL-based financial statements to the SEC. The latest XBRL 2.1 specifications are supported by Oracle Hyperion Disclosure Management, which supports the XBRL tagging of financial statements as well as the disclosures and footnotes within your 10K and 10Q filings. Because many of our customers use Hyperion Financial Management (HFM) for their consolidation needs, they simply generate XBRL statements from their consolidated financial results. Click here to watch a 3 min demo about this cool tool. Question: What if you don't use Hyperion Financial Management, and you only use E-Business Suite General Ledger or PeopleSoft General Ledger? Answer: No problem, all you need is Hyperion Disclosure Management to generate XBRL from your general ledger. Here are the steps: Upload the XBRL taxonomy from the SEC or XBRL website into Hyperion Disclosure Management. Publish your financial statements out of general ledger to Excel. Perform the XBRL tag mapping from the Excel output to Hyperion Disclosure Management.

• Instructor Insight: Dealing with Columns in Oracle JD Edwards Enterprise One Tools Release 9.1

  Oracle JD Edwards Enterprise One Tools Release  9.1 has many new features that will help end users be more efficient in their daily jobs. For example, hiding grid columns is now as easy as a left-mouse click. In earlier releases, users could click on the ‘Customize Grid’ link but still had to do several more clicks to hide or show a column . The following example shows how easy this new feature is to use. First, right-mouse click on the column you want to hide; for example the ‘Long Address’ column. The column is now hidden. Second, right-mouse over on any of the columns to show the ‘Unhide’ option. After you select ‘Unhide’, the hidden column is shown. You can then select the column to show, or unhide, the column. This new feature and others are covered in the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne System Administration Rel 9.x course, which has been updated to reflect the new release. • How To Check If a Transaction Related to Oracle Asset Tracking Has Been Accounted in SLA

  In Oracle Asset Tracking (OAT), we often see situations where a pending transaction has failed to be processed by the OAT programs. Typical situations can be: a pending transaction errors with "Unable to derive accounts from sub ledger accounting for the material transaction" a transaction is not picked by OAT programs. The Create Accounting program log file will show error messages and possible corrective actions to solve the error.  But as this is usually a scheduled program, often any errors that are reported are missed by users. To aid OAT users to identify if a transaction has failed and accounting has not been created, we have now created a SQL script which can be run for any pending transaction: How To Check If a Transaction Related to Oracle Asset Tracking Has Been Accounted in SLA ? (Doc ID 1673414.1)Using the script in this note, the user can pass the material transaction ID for the related transaction and the script will check if SLA accounting entries have been created for this specific transaction or not.If the SLA accounting entries have not been created, the script will prompt the user to run Create Accounting program.  After Create Accounting has been run, the user can run the script again to confirm that accounting has been created.

  Oracle SOA Suite Healthcare came up with a new way of monitoring where user can configure a dashboard and follow the dynamic runtime changes.Oracle SOA Suite for healthcare integration dashboards display information about the current health of the endpoints in a healthcare integration application. You can create and configure multiple dashboards as needed to monitor the status and volume metrics for the endpoints you have defined. The Dashboards reflects changes that occur in the runtime repository, such as purging runtime instance data, new messages processed, and new error messages. You can display data for various time periods, and you can manually refresh the data in real time or set the dashboard to automatically refresh at set intervals.Dashboard shows the following information: Status: The current status of the endpoint, such as Running, Idle, Disabled, or Errors. Messages Sent: The number of messages sent by the endpoint in the specified time period. Messages Received: The number of messages received by the endpoint in the specified time period. Errors: The number of messages with errors for the endpoint in the given time period. Last Sent: The date and time the last message was sent from the endpoint. Last Received: The date and time the last message was received from the endpoint. Last Error: The date and time of the last error for the endpoint.  It also shows the detailed view of a specific Endpoint The document type. The number of messages received per second. The total number of message processed in the specified time period. The average size of each message.

• Monitoring Windows Azure Service Bus Endpoint with BizTalk 360?

  I'm currently working with a customer who is undergoing an initiative to expose some of their line of business applications to external partners and SAAS applications and as part of this we have been looking at using the Windows Azure Service Bus. For the first part of the project we were focused on some synchronous request response scenarios where an external application would use the Service Bus relay functionality to get data from some internal applications. When we were looking at the operational monitoring side of the solution it was obvious that although most of the normal server monitoring capabilities would be required for the on premise components we would have to look at new approaches to validate that the operation of the service from outside of the organization was working as expected. A number of months ago one of my colleagues Elton Stoneman wrote about an approach I have introduced with a number of clients in the past where we implement a diagnostics service in each service component we build. This service would allow us to make a call which would flex some of the working parts of the system to prove it was working within any SLA. This approach is discussed on the following article: http://geekswithblogs.net/EltonStoneman/archive/2011/12/12/the-value-of-a-diagnostics-service.aspx In our solution we wanted to take the same approach but we had to consider that the service clients were external to the service. We also had to consider that by going through Windows Azure Service Bus it's not that easy to make most of your standard monitoring solutions just give you an easy way to do this. In a previous article I have described how you can use BizTalk 360 to monitor things using a custom extension to the Web Endpoint Manager and I felt that we could use this approach to provide an excellent way to monitor our service bus endpoint. The previous article is available on the following link: http://geekswithblogs.net/michaelstephenson/archive/2012/09/12/150696.aspx   The Monitoring Solution BizTalk 360 currently has an easy way to hook up the endpoint manager to a url which it will then call and if a successful response is returned it then considers the endpoint to be in a healthy state. We would take advantage of this by creating an ASP.net web page which would be called by BizTalk 360 and behind this page we would implement the functionality to call the diagnostics service on our Service Bus endpoint. The ASP.net page could include logic to work out how to handle the response from the diagnostics service. For example if the overall result of the diagnostics service was successful but the call to the diagnostics service was longer than a certain amount of time then we could return an error and indicate the service is taking too long. The following diagram illustrates the monitoring pattern.   The diagnostics service which is hosted in the line of business application allows us to ping a simple message through the Azure Service Bus relay to the WCF services in the LOB application and we they get a response back indicating that the service is working fine. To implement this I used the exact same approach I described in my previous post to create a custom web page which calls the diagnostics service and then it would return an HTTP response code which would depend on the error condition returned or a 200 if it was successful. One of the limitations of this approach is that the competing consumer pattern for listening to messages from service bus means that you cannot guarantee which server would process your diagnostics check message but with BizTalk 360 you could simply add multiple endpoint checks so that it could access the individual on-premise web servers directly to ensure that each server is working fine and then check that messages can also be processed through the cloud. Conclusion It took me about 15 minutes to get a proof of concept of this up and running which was able to monitor our web services which had been exposed via Windows Azure Service Bus. I was then able to inherit all of the monitoring benefits of BizTalk 360 to provide an enterprise class monitoring solution for our cloud enabled API.

• Developing with Oracle ADF Mobile and ADF Business Components Backend

  It's great to finally have the Oracle ADF Mobile solution out there. If you are not familiar with ADF Mobile - it basically lets you build applications that run on iOS and Android devices using the concepts you already know - components based UI constructions (same idea as JSF), taskflows, data controls, Java and of course JDeveloper. I created one demo that shows how to build an on-device application that gets data from local Java files (that run on the device - yes we do Java on iOS too) - you can see it here. However, one thing many of you might be wondering is how can you get data from your database into these mobile applications. Well if you already built your data access with Oracle ADF Business Components then here is a two step video demo that shows you what to do. The steps are: 1. Expose ADF Business Components as Services 2. Create an ADF Mobile application that consumes the above services with the Web service data control Simple right? That's the whole point of ADF Mobile - making on device application development as simple as possible. Try it out on your device.
