• Handling Junk Email with Apple Mail.app and Gmail

  I've just setup my Apple Mail client to work with Google Apps through IMAP. One lingering question is how to best handle SPAM (Junk Mail), however. In their Help section, Google recommends that we disable junk filtering on the client. http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78892 This leads me to wonder what we should do when a junk message makes it past Google's filter? Do I just delete the message? If I do, the Google spam filter will never improve and "learn" that the message was junk. Do I have to log in to the web interface at Google to mark the message as spam? That seems a bit arduous for every spam email I get. What's the best way to handle this? Thanks!

• Installing a bundle for TextMate

  I've downloaded the 30 day trial version of TextMate and wanted to use a plugin for coffeescript. The instructions for installing the plugin say to go to this directory cd ~/Library/Application\ Support/TextMate/Bundles (Textmate 1) Once I changed into the TextMate directory and started looking for Bundles by doing ls it only showed TextMate.pid In other words, no Bundles directory.... Once I was in the Bundles directory, I'm supposed to do git clone git://github.com/jashkenas/coffee-script-tmbundle CoffeeScriptBundle.tmbundle but didn't want to try that without first being in the Bundles directory.

• Launch synergy client on boot in Mac OS X

  I have a mac as a secondary machine at work. Currently I use synergy on my main machine to share its keyboard and mouse with the mac. I created a launch agent for my user to launch synergy when I log in, and that's working. However, this means I still have to pull out the mac's keyboard and mouse in order to log in. UPDATE: 6/3/14 Got this to work BUT only works when opening chrome for the first time open -a Google\ Chrome --args --"profile-directory"="Profile 1" So How do you get --args to be accepted AFTER google chrome as already been launched??

• MacPorts pHash not showing up in Python

  I am having a problem where python does not show pHash installed even though I installed it using macports. I made sure I am using the MacPorts version of Python by doing: sudo port select --set python python27 I then installed pHash by doing: sudo port install pHash. It installed without any errors. When I call help('modules'), I do not see pHash listed among the installed packages. Any ideas on why python is not seeing the pHash install by MacPorts? • Prevent important OS X process being swapped out, without code change?

  I want hotkey-based utilities like Quicksilver or Zooom to respond immediately. But if they have been idle for a while, they (I guess) get swapped out, and respond slowly, sometimes not even responding to the first few keystrokes I wanted to send to them. How can I encourage such processes (i.e. chosen processes, not all processes system wide) to remain in active memory? Or, am I misunderstanding the problem?

• Program to print gCal or iCal calendars in a monthly one calendar per column format

  I'm moving my family off of using the low tech "Boynton Mom's Family Calendar" to schedule things but I'd like to be able to create a monthly printout of the calendar in the same "Boynton" format (I'm sure it has an official name). The format is kind-of like a spreadsheet where each row of the calendar is a different day of the month and there is a separate column for each person in the family. I have all our calendars on Google but they are also accessible from iCal on the Mac. Is there a Mac program that can get the data from gCal or iCal print out the calendars in the Boynton format?

  I found the following in a text file, and I would like to use the Apple Service Diagnostic Application from a bootable USB key but I cannot find where to download it or set it up? Also is this free software or does it require a separate licence? It sounds like it would be a useful tool for diagnosing Mac problems. The Apple Service Diagnostic application is designed to run both EFI and Mac OS X tests from an external USB hard drive. Apple Service Diagnostic (EFI) runs low-level tests of the hardware directly and does not require Mac OS X, while Apple Service Diagnostic (OS) uses Mac OS X to run tests. Booting and Using the Apple Service Diagnostic Application - Before using Apple Service Diagnostic, disconnect any Ethernet network, USB, and audio cables. - With the USB hard drive containing ASD 3S123 plugged into a USB port, restart the computer and hold down the option key as the computer boots up into the Startup Manager. To run ASD (EFI) select the "ASD EFI 3S123" drive icon and press return or select it with a mouse click. To run ASD (OS) select the "ASD OS 3S123" drive icon and press return or select it with a mouse click. ASD (EFI) will load in 20-30 seconds; ASD (OS) will load in 2-3 minutes. - After running ASD (OS) or ASD (EFI), press the Restart button to restart the computer back into the normal startup volume, or hold down the option key to get back to the Startup Manager. ASD is no longer delivered as an image to be restored onto a DVD. ASD 3S117 and newer versions requires installation onto an external USB hard drive. • Why does my mac have page outs when I have inactive memory?

  From what I've read, page outs are a sign that you don't have enough RAM. I have also read that if you have inactive memory available, then the machine will use that memory when starting up new programs. I have about 2GB of inactive memory and very little available memory. Once this happens, my page outs go up. Why is this and do I need more memory? I have 8GB of RAM. I'm running VMware Fusion 5 with 2GB allotted to Windows 8.

• Password Manager that can sync a Blackberry and Mac OS X.

  I use a Blackberry Bold and a Macbook Pro. I am looking for a solution to have a synchronized password manager between the two devices. All the commercial ones I have discovered won't work between a Blackberry and a Mac. The almost solution was KeePass. I like the application on the Blackberry but I could not get the sync working reliably to the Mac. As well, I had to run the PC application by using Mono on the Mac and it was pretty slow. I am happy to pay for a good solution.

  Is it possible to specify VNC port number in built-in VNC client of Mac OS X? I'm trying to connect to Xen VPS machine with Finder's built-in VNC client. I used address like this. vnc://server:port But it fails because it uses another port, and Finder's built-in VNC cannot handle port number. As I know it handles the number after colon as display-number, not a port number. Is there a way to specify port number on the VNC client? Or any workaround for this? (port forwarding??? I have no idea about it...)

• Dubious permissions on plist Problems installing Jenkins

  I am trying to install jenkins on 10.6.8 In order to do this I needed to modify the jenkins plist which was owned by root. I gave myself (the admin) permissions to modify this file and added the admin as the user in the plist for jenkins. Now the problem is that launchctrl sees my permission change as a security issue and will not launch something about dubious permissions on plist. I changed owner to root, and removed admin permission to write but launchctrl still views the permissions as dubious? Time for a reinstall? How should I have set the plist in the first place? and what should I do now?

• Powerbook G4 unresponsive on wake?

  I have a Powerbook G4 17" and I recently updated to the Mac OS 10.5.8 and got a monitor. I put it to sleep by closing the lid and sometimes it resumes normally and sometimes it doesn't. It doesn't matter if it's on sleep for a day or 10 minutes, it just happens randomly. It wakes up, but the screen doesn't flash blue for a few seconds like it normally would, indicating that it found the second monitor. It just wakes up, and a picture appears on both screens and the mouse moves, but nothing responds. The only way I can make it work again is by holding down the power button until it shuts down and then turning it on again. this frustrating because then I have to reopen all my programs and Safari tabs. I tried resetting the PMU by unplugging everything and taking out the batter, then holding the power button for five seconds, but it has the same problem no matter what I do.

  I've installed a trial of Adobe Flash CS4 (i didn't use this trial till the end) and wrongly entered the expired license number. I ran uninstall and tried to install a trial version again. Seems, that it keeps somewhere the wrong serial number and each time i run the Flash application it alerts me, that the license has expired. How do i properly install the trial?   Hi, after a other mac or macbook is connected with a mini display port to a new generation imac you can switch between the imac and the other connected mac pressing cmd+F2(brightness up) using the keyboard of the imac. i connect my macbook to my imac, switch to the macbook and connect the bluetooth keyboard and mouse of my imac to my macbook. after that i'm not able to switch back to my imac, because the keyboard is used on my macbook. i have a second mouse connected to my imac, so i'd would be cool to switch views and control my imac with my second mouse. is it possible to send the shortcut cmd+F2 to my imac from my macbook? via command line or something? using apple script? all ideas are welcome, thanks!

• Flash alternative for iBook Mac?

  I have a old Apple iBook G4 that I decided to hook up to my main TV. I like the setup because I can surf the internet on my TV now. The only thing that I can't seem to do is watch Flash videos. Apparently Flash Player 10 doesn't play nice with the iBook's graphics card's GPU, leaving all the graphics processing to the CPU which is a disaster. Others suggested downgrading to Flash Player 9, I did that, and youtube worked fine, but Hulu (The main reason I wanted to hook it up to the TV in the first place) did not. Anyone know of a Flash alternative or a Flash 10 fix for the iBook? Or even a Hulu client that doesn't require Flash.   For the past two years I have been using John Maisey's most excellent iCal Reply Checker to take control over iCal's aggressive notification emails. Sadly, it doesn't work in OS X 10.6. I am on Lion, and when I remove all files associated with MySQL on my machine it still tells me that I have a newer version installed when I try to install it from the DMG file.
