• Problem on application with asp in IIS 7.5 with oracle 11g

  We have an application developed with .Net on server 2008 R2 and IIS 7.5 wich is linked liked to oracle 11g on another server. Our problem is that we lose the service every two or three or more. The application stops and we have to restart IIS or the server to continue the job (the number of users is less then 50). We have no error message. Do you know anything to do to avoid this situation, something like: A parameter to put on asp pages A parameter to switch on or off on the server or on the database

So you may imagine many detour were there in my way, that is true. And I want to avoid getting lost again if possible. • Legality of using/embedding MP3s?

  I am working on a language learning startup. I think that one of the best ways to study is through music. For that purpose I would like to include MP3s on the website, together with related study tools such as appropriate lyrics. Because I want to avoid dead links I would like to host the MP3s directly on my server and stream them to the users. Doing this isn't exactly legal since everyone could download the MP3s. But what if, before accessing a specific song, I displayed a message asking "Do you legally own this song in CD/MP3/... format?" and only if the user clicks "yes" he is allowed to continue and listen. Isn't this how, for example, YouTube gets around legal problems? Does anybody have insight on this? Thank you!

• Naming interfaces for persistent values

  I have 2 distinct types of persistent values that I'm having trouble naming well. They're defined with the following Java-esque structure, borrowing Guava's Optional for the example and using generic names to avoid anchoring: interface Foo<T> { T get(); void set(T value); } interface Bar<T> { Optional<T> get(); void set(T value); } With Foo, if the value hasn't been set explicitly then there's some default value available or pre-set. With Bar, if the value hasn't been set explicitly then there's a distinct "no value" state. I'm trying to optimize the names for their call sites. For example, someone using Foo may not care whether there's a default value involved, only that they're guaranteed to always have a value. How would you go about naming these interfaces?

• Java best practice Interface - subclasses and constants

  In the case where a couple of classes implements an interface, and those classes have a couple of constants in common (but no functions), were should I put this constant ? I've had this problem a couple of times. I have this interface : DataFromSensors that I use to hide the implementations of several sub classes like DataFromHeartRateMonitor DataFromGps etc... For some reason, those classes uses the same constants. And there's nowere else in the code were it is used. My question is, were should I put those constants ? Not in the interface, because it has nothing to do with my API Not in a static Constants class, because I'm trying to avoid those Not in a common abstract class, that would stand between the interface and the subclasses, because I have no functions in common, only a couple of constants (TIMEOUT_DURATION, UUID, those kind of things) I've read best practice for constants and interface to define constants but they don't really answer my question. • returning null vs returning zero, which would be better?

  I inherited a project that I am managing and having to maintain pending the redevelopment of the code base. At the moment I am being tasked with adding little feature all over the place and have gotten into the habit of returning null instead of zero in parts of the code where I am working on. The problem is we have a client that is using this code and parts of code that require data from my implemented features recieve a null and dump the stack trace in UI. I would like to avoid this entirely from my input but without the nullPointer exceptions there's the potential that errors would be introduced into the client's data which may go un-noticed. Usually I would have come up with my own error notification system but I have never inherited a project before. so I am unsure whether to continue down this path. I still believe that the stack dump is preferable to un-noticed data corruption/inaccuracies.

• Help with Grub2 needed post 13.10 updgrade. Grub sees my opensuse12.3 but when selected hangs with black screen.

  This happened on last upgrade and I reinstalled opensuse. I want to avoid that this time. When opensuse controlled grub the options to boot either OS worked fine. The ubuntu one will not work. Are there grub settings I can change to get this working? Would it be better to get the opensuse grub to load, if so how can I do this. i can see the opensuse root and home directories from ubuntu (they are on a separate HDD) Thanks

• Android loading screens blocking, good practice?

  I've noticed many (if not all) android games don't support the "back" button functionality during their loading screens. Which leads to some frustrating moments when a user accidentally starts up the game and has to wait for the long loading stage to end in order to close it. So my questions are: 1) Why is that ? Is there a good reason to avoid something like asynchronous loading (or some other solution to this problem) in android games ? 2) If there is no good reason not to support this functionality, what would be the best way to accomplish it ?

• Install/Downgrade kernel to v3.5.5 on Ubuntu 13.04

  I've been looking around the internet for a solution to downgrade the kernel from 3.8 to 3.5.5 since I've got the AMD/Ati Radeon Mobility HD 5600 graphic card on my machine. This video card in unfortunately not supported by the 3.8 kernel. And then when I've downgraded the kernel I need to install a version 12.* of the AMD Catalyst driver. There is too much in stake to wipe out the current installation of the OS and install an older OS. So I would like to avoid doing that to the ends of the world. I want both domains to co-exist, they share most of the same content, but they differ in design and they are aimed at different markets / rivaling communities. • nfs mountpoint named ``share'' breaks ls and man

  I mounted a nfs server to ~/share. This works fine as long as I'm at home, where the nfs share is in reach. Whenver I'm not, this seems to break access to all manpages. Using man (or ls in my homedir) waits forever. Checking with strace reveals that they try to access the folder called share. Unmounting fails too. Even with -l (lazy) and -f (force). I am asking for three things here: Is ``share'' a magic name? Does something like MANPATH exist, which I should avoid? How do I unmount without rebooting? (I already commented the share out in fstab) What would you suggest me to do, to have network/position based mounting of NFS shares?

• XNA VertexBuffer.SetData performance suggestions

  I have a 3d world in a grid layout where each grid cell contains its separate vertex and index buffer for the mesh/terrain of that cell. When the player moves outside the boundaries of his cell, i dynamically load more cells in his walking direction based on his viewing distance. This triggers x number of vertex and indexbuffer initializations depending on how many cells that needs to be generated and causes the framerate to drop annoyingly during this time. The generation of terrain data is handled in a separate thread and runs smoothly. The vertex and index buffers are added during the update cycle of the game loop. I´ve tried batching the number of cells to be processed to avoid sending too much data at once into the buffers, which worked ok at a shorter viewing distance (about 9 cells to process), but not as well at greater distances with around 30 cells to process. Any idea how i can optimize this?

  There's a class with a parametrized constructor that initializes a member variable. All public methods of the class then use this member variable to do something. I want to ensure that the caller always creates an object using the parametrized constructor (there is also a setter for this member variable) and then call that object's methods. In essence, it should be impossible for the caller to call any method without setting a value to the member variable (either by using the parametrized constructor or the setter). Currently, a caller can simply make an object using the default constructor and then call that object's method - I want to avoid checking whether or not the member variable is set in each and every one of the 20-odd methods of the class (and throw an exception if it is not). Though a runtime solution is acceptable (better than the one I mentioned above); a compile-time solution is preferable so that any developer will not be allowed to make that mistake and then waste hours debuggging it!

  I am writing a turn based strategy game in C#. My GUI implementation consists of class that extends Form containing a class that extends Panel. When I render the GUI I draw to the paint method in the panel. I am trying to figure out what is the best way for handling form re-size events. I know I want a minimum window size, but I would prefer to not have a maximum or a set size. Ideally the GUI would reveal more/less of the map as the user changes the window size. I would like to avoid scaling the graphics if at all possible. What is the best way to handle re-size events?

I plan to develop a Python program that sends the URL of a given website to a virtual machine where the dynamic execution of the eventual malicious JavaScript embedded in the website's page is monitored. My questions: Should my VM be Windows or Linux ? What if the malware damages my VM: is there a hint how to avoid that ? Or launch a new VM automatically instead ? If I use telnet client library to communicate with the VM: must I implement a server within the VM to deal with my queries or can I overcome this ? I am jut looing for hints, general ideas. • How can I programmatically block user input for a given time?

  As a person working in computer science working offline to avoid facebook and thelike is not always (meaning hardly ever) possible for me since I mostly have to be online to work. I have tried leechblock and similar things but the problem becomes that at some point I start making systems for myself to hack, which is kind of pointless if oyu have root. I would very much like to try out the method described here. (Short version: reboot your PC every time finish a task or get bored with it) Unlike for the author of this blog my work is mainly done not in screen sessions but in IDEs ans other not-so-fast-to-start-up stuff, meaning a full reboot including loading all my programs will take its time. So, the question is: How can I block all user input and preferrably blank the screen for a given amount of time? The idea would then be to have a keyboard shortcut to activate the script/program (which would probably also have to have root i guess?)

• Are these interview questions too difficult for entry-level C++ positions?

  I recently had a few interviews for programming jobs within the financial industry. I am looking for entry-level positions as I specify in the cover letter. However I am usually asked questions such as: - all two-letters commands you know in unix - representation of float/double numbers (ieee standard) - segmentation fault memory dump, and related issues - all functions you know to convert string to integer (not just atoi) - how to avoid virtual tables - etc.. Is that the custom? Because I don't think this kind of questions make sense for someone willing to get an entry-level job. Is it totally crazy to think that they should ask more conceptual questions? This is beginning to driving me nuts, honestly. Thanks

• Combining a content management system with ASP.NET

  I am going to be creating a site that seems like it requires a blend of a content management system (CMS) and some custom web development (which is done in ASP.NET MVC). I have plenty of web development experience to understand the ASP.NET MVC side of the fence, but, I don't have a lot of CMS knowledge aside from getting one stood up. Right now my biggest question is around integrating security from ASP.NET with the CMS. I currently have an ASP.NET MVC site that handles the authentication for multiple production sites and creates an authentication cookie under our domain (*.example.com). The page acts like a single sign on page since the cookie is a wildcard and can be used in any other applications of the same domain. I'd really like to avoid having users put in their credentials twice. Is there a CMS that will play well with the ASP.NET Forms Authentication given how I have these existing applications structured? As an aside, right now I am leaning towards Drupal, but, that isn't finalized.

• Advice on what to learn? [closed]

  Currently I work as a .NET C# programmer, quite fresh faced at that (only been working professionally for 8 months) I'm enjoying what I'm doing, but I'm now thinking ahead for other languages to learn. I've heard from quite a few seasoned developers that they reckon it's worth getting in to HTML5. Before I asked this question I read a few of the other questions similar to this, but most were dated back a few years. I'm wondering what your advice would be to an aspiring programmer, what I should avoid going for (i.e. as I understand it Flash is essentially going to be phased out due to HTML5) I was looking in to WPF and the more updated .NET technologies, but someone advised me that WPF stuff will probably be redundant in the future. • Using Minified Page Specific JS [migrated]

  I've been working on a rather large scale project which makes use of a number of different pages with some very specific Javascript for each of them. To lessen load times, I plan to minify it all in to one file before deploying. The problem is this: how should I avoid launching page specific JS on pages which don't require it? So far my best solution has been to wrap each page in some additional container <div id='some_page'> ...everything else... </div> and I extended jQuery so I can do something like this: // If this element exists when the DOM is ready, execute the function $('#some_page').ready(function() { ... }); Which, while kind of cool, just rubs me the wrong way.

• Can't connect to wireless without typing sudo modprobe b43 in terminal

  I just upgraded to 12.04 on an old ACER Travelmate 5320 using Broadcom 4311. I wasn't able to connect to the internet through the wireless for a few days. It didn't even display wireless networks. I was finally able to make it work by following the instructions found here: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#supported However, each time I log on to the computer I have to go to the terminal and type sudo modprobe b43 to make the wireless work. Is there somehow I can avoid this? I have used Ubuntu for many years but always relied on other people to help me with the technical stuff. The terminal is alien to me so I literally follow online forum instructions without knowing what I'm doing. Also, I tried many many things before I managed to make it work. So I'm worried I may have installed something that now conflicts with whatever the sudo modprobe b43 does. Thank you
