• Rails: Ajax-enabled form without a model object

  I'm new to Rails and having a hard time figuring out how to create a form that submits over Ajax without having a corresponding model object. My use case is a simple form that collects an email address and sends it an email; there's nothing to be persisted, so no model. In cases where I do have a model, I've had success with form_for(@model, remote: true). I can't seem to find the right helper for the case where there is no model. I tried form_tag(named_path, remote: true) and that works, but does not use Ajax. Pointers to an example with an example with a proper controller, .html.erb and routes.rb would be really appreciated.

• Function calls in virtual machine killing performance

  I wrote a virtual machine in C, which has a call table populated by pointers to functions that provide the functionality of the VM's opcodes. When the virtual machine is run, it first interprets a program, creating an array of indexes corresponding to the appropriate function in the call table for the opcode provided. It then loops through the array, calling each function until it reaches the end. Each instruction is extremely small, typically one line. Perfect for inlining. The problem is that the compiler doesn't know when any of the virtual machine's instructions are going to be called, as it's decided at runtime, so it can't inline them. The overhead of function calls and argument passing is killing the performance of my VM. Any ideas on how to get around this?

• c# Delegates, Events and Lambda Expr for new students

  I've been asked by my pointy haired boss to educate our new co-ops (interns) in the ways of C#. I have roughly ~30mins to cover the topics of Delegates, Events and Lambda Expressions. The time restriction is rather tight and the topics are broad. Since I'm not a C# guru, I would like some hints and pointers. Since my time is short, what points should I cover with respect to the three topics listed above? What are some good Do's and Dont's when using those three things? I might have time for a short Lambda Expr demo. What is the most common use of LExpr (probably a Select().Where() statement on an enumerable??) that I could demo? Thanks. EDIT: The students have working knowledge of C++ and Java.

• Using Visual Studio to create web application in Sharepoint 2010

  Hello, I am looking for pointers, examples, etc. to create a basic application in sharepoint 2010 using visual studio. The application would show a list on page 1 (driven by linq entities). When you click a row, it shows a details page. I've gone through the tutorials but could not find a basic crud-like example as explained above. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I missed something in one of the tutorials, please let me know. To summarize, in a very generic way; I am looking for information on how to display two web application pages and have the user click a link or control to move through pages. Regards, Bryan

• How to track dealloc of an abstract object class (NSMutable...)

  I have a bug in my code caused by a premature freeing of a ObjC object. I seem not to be able to find it by just looking at my code. There's usually a simple trick to track the dealloc to any class: Implement dealloc, and set a breakpoint. This even usually works with standard objects, by subclassing them and making sure I instantiate the subclass instead of the standard class. However, this does not seem to work with NSMutableArray, and probably neither with similar NSMutable... classes. Some explanations for this can be found here: link text Any other ideas how to track the dealloc invocation of a particular class or object so that I can see the call stack? It's probably possible with DTrace. Any pointers without having to read the entire dtrace docs first?

What operating systems do i need to run on the machines, and what application should i use to manage the load balancing? NB: I read somewhere that google uses cheap machines to perform this fete, how do they connect two network cards( 'Teaming' ) and distribute load across the machines? • Single page app with high number of images working extremely slow on iOS8 safari/Webview

  We are working on a WebView (not WKWebView, yet) app, are are observing that the app runs extremely slow on iOS 8. The same app runs smooth on lower versions of OS like iOS7 and iOS6. So we tried it in safari on iOS8 and the performance is similar to iOS6 and 7. The app is filled with images and many are high resolution. While trying to trace the issue (trial and error!) we reduced the sizes and resolutions of the images and the performance improved, but it is still not at par with versions 6 and 7. We are unable to find any such issues reported elsewhere and are stuck. It would be great if we could get some pointers on this one.

  What are the things that Java (the language and platform) got categorically right? In other words, what things are more recent programming languages preserving and carrying forward? Some easy answer are: garbage collection, a VM, lack of pointers, classloaders, reflection(?) What about language based answers? Please don't list the things Java did wrong, just right. • Write a dll that is accessable from VS 2003 VC++ code

  I need to be able to write a DLL in either C# or VC++ that is accessible from code that is written in Visual Studio 2003 VC++. It looks like the code is unmanaged (uses * for pointers) VC++ and this DLL needs to be able to drop right in and be accessed by the current code. The DLL is an RS232 driver that needs to be able to return an int for an error code and pass back, by reference, some measured values, to the calling program. Will I even be able to write this in C#? If not, I only have access to Visual Studio 2005 or 2008. Will I be able to write my code in either, and will that DLL be able to be called from the current code base? Or do I have to go looking on ebay for a copy of VS 2003?

• "Winamp style" spectrum analyzer

  I have a program that plots the spectrum analysis (Amp/Freq) of a signal, which is preety much the DFT converted to polar. However, this is not exactly the sort of graph that, say, winamp (right at the top-left corner), or effectively any other audio software plots. I am not really sure what is this sort of graph called (if it has a distinct name at all), so I am not sure what to look for. I am preety positive about the frequency axis being base two exponential, the amplitude axis puzzles me though. Any pointers?

• Java reduce CPU usage

  Greets- We gots a few nutters in work who enjoy using while(true) { //Code } in their code. As you can imagine this maxes out the CPU. Does anyone know ways to reduce the CPU utilization so that other people can use the server as well. The code itself is just constantly polling the internet for updates on sites. Therefore I'd imagine a little sleep method would greatly reduce the the CPU usage. Also all manipulation is being done in String objects (Java) anyone know how much StringBuilders would reduce the over head by? Thanks for any pointers

• How to receive a datastream from a device on your computer, in C#

  I plan to build a small audio-recorder app in C#. My laptop has a built in Microphone that's always active, so I want to use that as an early-stage test. I would simply start recording, save the file as a .wav or even use the LAME dll to make it into an MP3. The problem is, I don't know how to contact that microphone. Do I use a library that can detect a device, or do I just catch a stream of bytes from the port that the device is on? I don't have any experience with receiving data from connected devices. I suppose that I'll need to enter all the data into a byte array and then Serialize that into a WAV file, but I'm not sure. Can I get some pointers on this subject?

  I have an XNA 3.0 project that compiled just fine in VS2008, but that gives compile errors in VS2010 (with XNA 4.0 CTP). The error: Cannot use fixed local 'depthPtr' inside an anonymous method, lambda expression, or query expression depthPtr is a fixed float* into an array, that is used inside a Parallel.For lambda expression from System.Threading. As I said, this compiled and ran just fine on VS2008, but it does not on VS2010, even when targeting .NET 3.5. Has this changed in .NET 4.0, and even so, shouldn't it still compile when I choose .NET 3.5 as the target framework? Searching for the term "Cannot use fixed local" yields exactly one (useless) result, both in Google and Bing. If this has changed, what is the reason for this? I can imagine capturing a fixed pointer-type in a closure could get a bit weird, is that why? So I'm guessing this is bad practice? And before anyone asks: no, the use of pointers is not absolutely critical here. I would still like to know though :)

The server will run a very minimal version of Ubuntu server LTS (only LAMP and email server no GUI). I want to write a script (scheduled as a cron job) that will allow me to upload local files onto the server. I want to use [SFTP][1], for security reasons. I am new to shell scripting - but I guess shell scripting is the way to do this (unless I am mistaken). • Sorting 1000-2000 elements with many cache misses

  I have an array of 1000-2000 elements which are pointers to objects. I want to keep my array sorted and obviously I want to do this as quick as possible. They are sorted by a member and not allocated contiguously so assume a cache miss whenever I access the sort-by member. Currently I'm sorting on-demand rather than on-add, but because of the cache misses and [presumably] non-inlining of the member access the inner loop of my quick sort is slow. I'm doing tests and trying things now, (and see what the actual bottleneck is) but can anyone recommend a good alternative to speeding this up? Should I do an insert-sort instead of quicksorting on-demand, or should I try and change my model to make the elements contigious and reduce cache misses? OR, is there a sort algorithm I've not come accross which is good for data that is going to cache miss?

  Hi. I found lots of MinMax Heap implementations, that were storing data in an array. It is realy easy to implement, that is way I am looking for something different. I want to create a MinMax Heap using only elements of the Heap with pointers to left child and right child (and afcourse a key to compare). So the Heap have only pointer to the root object (min level), and a root object have a pointer to his children (max level) and so on. I know how to insert a new object (finding a proper path by using binary represenation of int depending on Heap size), but I don't know how to implement the rest (push up (down) the element, find parent or grandparent). • Beginning android: how to map a string to a list

  I just finished the NotepadV1-3 tutorial for Android apps, and I was thinking of creating my own inventory app for fun, which for now basically consists of a list of names (such as "DVD" or "Grocery"), each of which can be clicked, which will bring up another specific list associated with that name. However, with the SQLiteDatabase.insert(..) method, the ContentValue can only take (among many others) "String, String" as argument, and I can't figure out how to input into the database a list of Strings associated with a particular key. I'm having trouble researching on how to resolve this as I am not that familiar with SQL. What would be the best way to store a key with its associated list of Strings? Any pointers and suggestions are appreciated! Android newb :[

  Hi, Anyone has pointers on how to get real time US gas station feeds via webservice ? I'm trying to develop an iphone app that give users real time gas station price near their location. Currently i was wondering is there a legit government service that produce real time gas station price in the US on a daily basis? I heard about http://gasbuddy.com/ but i don't know where they get the data source from and was not sure if i should base on their data as well. On the other hand, there is a bunch of iphone apps on the apple store that show the gas price info.   I have a voice application that would be much-improved if there was the ability to use a "trigger word" to start recording audio. I don't need a full speech-text engine, just the ability to reliably/efficiently detect the trigger word. I am wondering if there are any specialized speech engines that support this specific use case, or any libraries/methods to developing such a single-purpose detection engine. Ideally I'd like it to work in noisy environments, but it can be trained for a single user's voice. Pointers to research papers / topics would also be appreciated so I know what to ask for.

• Editable CATextLayer?

  I have several CATextLayers. When I doubleclick one of them, I want to be able to edit it's string. Think of text as it's handled in Keynote or many other apps. Any ideas? I thought of putting an editable textfield right in front of the layer and then dismiss it on enter, but I didn't get far. :-( I target Mac OS X 10.5 with Objective-C 2.0 and Garbage Collection.   Using Javascript / jQuery, I'm trying to build a "combination checker" that will take the values of three (but can be more) dropdown lists and filter the options based on a supplied list of allowed combinations. For example: DROPDOWNS Field 1: - value_1 - value_2 Field 2: - value_3 Field 3: - value_4 - value_5 COMBINATIONS - value_1, value_3, value_5 - value_1, value_3, value_4 - value_2, value_3, value_5 When a user selects Field 3 - value_4, the unavailable options will be disabled - ie, Field 1 - value_2 (there is no combination that allows value_2 and value_4 to be selected together). It would be really great if someone could provide some pointers on how this can be achieved or just provide a fresh perspective - I'm going round in circles on this one!

  Hello, In my app, i've created the TList type list where i store the pointers to 1 string and 2 float(real) values for every 3 items. aList.Add(@sName); //string aList.Add(@x1); //float aList.Add(@x2); //float Then, i want to get the values out from the list, but i could only do that for string sStr := string(lList.items[i]); But i couldn't get the float values as a := real(lList...) will result in an invalid typecast error. So what do i do to get the float values? Of course i have a question if that string casting will actually give me the string value. I'm not good at pointer stuff so i don't know how to do it.

• How can a class's memory-allocated address be determined from within the contructor?

  Is it possible to get the memory-allocated address of a newly instantiated class from within that class's constructor during execution of said constructor? I am developing a linked list wherein multiple classes have multiple pointers to like classes. Each time a new class instantiates, it needs to check its parent's list to make sure it is included. If I try to do something like this: MyClass() // contructor { extern MyClass * pParent; for ( int i = 0; i < max; i++ ) { pParent->rels[i] == &MyClass; // error } } I get this error: error C2275: 'namespace::MyClass' : illegal use of this type as an expression Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
