  • Xubuntu vs Ubuntu 10.04 Performance

    - by wag2639
I know it just came out today, but are there any statistics with memory requirements, system resources, power usage, and performance to decide which is better Xubuntu or Ubuntu (XFCE vs Gnome)? My main concern is running it as secondary OS on my Lenovo T400 laptop to just get online quickly and using SSH from a terminal to connect to remote web servers.

  • FreeBSD 8 Kernel Configuration Error Using the VESA Option

  • XRDP: window manager not starting

    - by niboshi
I have setup my Ubuntu server so that I can connect and login to XRDP from Windows remote desktop. My problem is that after logging in, no window-manager is started. It only displays a single gnome-terminal with no border and gray meshed background. It seems that /usr/sbin/xrdp-sesman itself is running (from observation of ps and /var/run/xrdp/xrdp-sesman.pid). I put debugging line like touch /home/myname/aaaaa into ~/startwm.sh or /etc/xrdp/startwm.sh, but the file aaaaa did not generated after logging in, so these scripts have not been executed. (Both of them have chmod +x permission.) Am I missing some configuration file, or is there any way of further inspection? Any help is appreciated. Thanks. - by Sandro
I am trying to create a hardlink on my C drive that points to a file on my D drive. I open up a terminal with Administrator privileges and try the following: C:\Users\sandro>mklink /H _vimrc D:\sandro-desktop\.vimrc The error that I get is: The system cannot move the file to a different disk drive. When I try a softlink I get the issue that for some reason changes to the link contents aren't reflected on the targeted file. Thank you!

  • Ubuntu - Bash - How to Ctrl + R

    - by Greg_the_Ant
I can't seem to locate recent commands I've run when I do Ctrl + R in my terminal, nor can I see them when I hit the up arrow. It was a long command. Is there a length limit to what is stored? I may have used sudo. Is sudo history stored somewhere else? If so how do I access it? Much thanks for any insight.

  • gvim on Lubuntu

    - by icedTea
I can't seem to use gvim on lubuntu. After installing vim with sudo apt-get install vim I cannot seem to start it: $ gvim The program 'gvim' can be found in the following packages: * vim * vim-gnome * vim-tiny * vim-athena * vim-gtk * vim-nox Try: sudo apt-get install <selected package> $ Is this an issue with lubuntu? Is there a workaround? Vim does start in terminal mode, I would prefer gvim though.

  • xterm window gets stuck after some time

    - by eSKay
I am using xterm on RHEL with KDE. Usually after a couple of days, the xterm terminals get stuck i.e. I am not able to resize or relocate them. After this, even if I open a new terminal, it is stuck the same way. What I do is logout and login again. Is this a bug with xterm? Is there a known solution?

  • How to Setup Java Application

    - by Ari
I have a 'desktop' java application which is in the form of a jar file. How can I: Store this application on a single server. Grant access via Terminal Services to a specific OU to run this application from the central location. Disallow the copying or moving of the application (jar file) to any other location. Allow the saving/copying/moving of the output of the application on an authorized user's local drive. Thanks.

  • Pos receipt printer

    - by unknown (google)
Is it possible to connect a receipt printer to a telephone for printing similar to how a Credit card terminal works when connected to a telephone line. Our clients donot have internet connections where we can connect the printer over Ethernet, so was thinking if it was possible to do the same via telephone line.

  • Deleting a single file from the trash in Mac OS X Snow Leopard

    - by SteveTheOcean
In earlier versions of Mac OS X one could delete a file from the trash by opening a terminal window and typing rm ~/.Trash/file_i_want_to_delete. See this previous post. Unlike earlier versions in Mac OS X Snow Leopard one can "put back" a file from the trash into its original directory. Will the rm trick still work? Testing shows it does delete the file but what happens to the "put back" information that specifies the directory from which the file was deleted?

  • X server for windows

    - by Maxim Veksler
Hi everyone, I'm looking to run cygwin xterm on my machine. For this I need an X server, which one would you recommend? It's important that it won't have too much memory leaks and that it would be fast enough to allow reasonable terminal based work on the PC. Thank you, Maxim.

  • Can't SSH into Linux server

    - by Charissa
I have access to a Ubuntu Server (10.4) that I can't SSH into. From a terminal the connection times out and from putty the connection is refused. I have checked that sshd is running and listening on all interfaces, iptables has all chains empty and default is ACCEPT, additional firewall is accepting on port 22 inbound, and all outbound. I can't telnet into port 22 either. What could the problem be and how can I troubleshoot it?

  • how to disable RemoteApp sessions lock if idle for 10 minutes and require no user needs to input password to unlock?

    - by Carlos Sanchez
RemoteApp sessions lock if idle for 10 minutes, user needs to input password to unlock. My users are running an application from Win2008 Terminal server using RemoteApp. If the application remains idle for 10 minutes it gets "locked" and the user is required to enter username and password to continue using it. This is VERY VERY annoying as the app usually sits idle for bout 20-30 minutes, used for 1 min... repeat.

  • What anti-keylogging programs can you use when using public PCs

    - by Jason Smith
Are there anti-keylogging programs that can keep you safe while you are using a public PC terminal? Do they exist and what are these? I like to know that I am safe when entering data on a public PC for example from malware or keyloggers, who knows where it has been. Or else, how can I keep my personal data safe when using a public PC? I think this question is relevant for anyone who is concerned about their security on any level.
