• Unable to log into Windows XP Pro Domain Not Available

  Trying to access an old laptop I have but at the windows login screen I attempt to log in and get the message "Unable to log in because is unavailable". This laptop is not on a domain or a network and I do not know the computer name. I have blanked the passwords of the local administrator and user account using Offline NT Password and Registry Editor but still unable to log in? Any advice would be grateful or if you can point me to the registry location I can edit or delete to remove the domain. Thanks

  For special testing purposes, we need a Windows server to allow the following: A team member can log in remotely to the server. When remotely logged in, they can disconnect the wireless connection, perform a few tests, and then reconnect the wireless connection. In general, the LAN connection would just be used for the remote login, the wireless connection would be used for performing tests including using a web browser to test certain web sites, etc. How can we successfully configure the server to support 2 network connections like this? (A regular LAN connection + a wireless connection). And also make sure that the tests we perform using the browser utilize the wireless connection for the outgoing internet activity.

The scenario is as follows: For location public (employee plugging in his laptop in hotel, public wi-fi,etc) all inbound connections are restricted, only outbound VPN + www is enabled. Employee then initiates a VPN connection, VPN pushes routes to 10.0.0.0/8 subnet Now I would like to have lax security rules for traffic from/to 10.0.0.0/8 that comes through the VPN interface, while still protecting the laptop from traffic that comes via uplink interface as if it was private. • Weird Windows 2003 MSDTC and SQL 2005 issue

  scenario: Windows 2003 sp2 x64 enterprise edition. SQL 2005 sp2 cu9 x64 Enterprise edition After restarting the resource groups on two node active-active cluster, 3 SQL 2005 instances start up fine. The 4th one starts up but starts throwing the following error. "Enlist operation failed: 0x8004d00e(XACT E NOTRANSACTION). SQL Server could not register with Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MS DTC) as a resource manager for this transaction. The transaction may have been stopped by the client or the resource manager." MSDTC is fine since the other 3 function normally. The only way to "fix" it is to take the 4th instance offline and bring it online again. Is there any way to fix this enlistment without restarting?

I just want to test my web application on the machine it self so I don't need the mails to go out on the internet, but just to be written to disk (so that I can verify that the mail function was indeed called and the correct data was handed over to SMTP) Can you recommend some tool. I guess starting your own SMTP server in python is an option. I am looking for a simple (ready to use) solution, targeted for tests systems. • Windows Server 2008 Antivirus Software with an API

  I'm looking for an Antivirus package that is compliant with Windows Server 2008. That's not the hard part. What I need is an API layer on the Antivirus that i can call from managed .net code. For example: I am developing an Asp.Net (C#) website that allows users to upload files to the web server which the web site resides on. We have full control of the server so there are no security/rights issues on the server. I need to be able to run the antivirus algorithm on the newly uploaded files without (hopefully) shelling out to a command-ilne version of the software. Does anyone know of such a package?

  I have configured the Windows Firewall to Block (default) incoming connection on the public profile. I have created a rule for a port (in this case, this is Sql Server) that explicitly states that only my office static IP is allowed. If I test from my office, I am able to connect to the port. I was expecting that anybody outside the office would not be able to connect, but this is not the case. I asked a friend to telnet the port to see if it would reply and it does even if he's not on my network. I am a bit confuse here. Shouldn't it block everybody but the given IP? Is my server completely unsecured?

• Windows scheduler - Tasks not running when user not logged in

  I have Windows Server 2003, with schedules setup via Remote Desktop under one account. That account appears in the 'creator' column too. I have 'Run only if logged on' unticked. When I have logged in under that account and then 'disconnected' leaving the the session alive, the schedule runs. But every time the server is rebooted, the task again fails to run until I again log in and disconnect. Any KB fixes I've missed or issues I've overlooked? Normally I only discover the issue when a user tells me the schedule has stopped running so it's a real reliability issue. I'd also be happy with an answer suggesting an alternative scheduler with higher reliability. Thanks

  If I open an instance of Windows Explorer, a button appears on the taskbar; its icon matches the icon of current location in Explorer. E.g. If I've clicked on a drive (e.g. C:) then the taskbar icon changes to the drive icon. If I select the Pictures Library location, the taskbar icon changes to a little picture symbol. How can I stop this behaviour, so that the taskbar icon always shows the same icon, regardless of where I've clicked in Explorer?

  I have a set of MP3 files that Windows Media Player just refuses to add to the library. They are placed in the standard My Music folder. I play them in media player. They just won't be listed in the library. I've tried dragging them and dropping them on the media player but they still don't appear in the library. I have an identical laptop where I've also copied the mp3 files and they appear in the library fine. Any ideas what would cause this?

  I'm using Windows 8.1 and when you are in the "start screen" (where all the tiles are), if you type something, a search panel appears on the right side with search results. In 8.0 it searched within "start menu" shortcuts and control panel elements only (if I remember correctly). In 8.1 it now search "start menu" shortcuts, my library and files and no longer control panel items. Is there a way to configure this? I use this search solely to locate a "start menu" shortcut and/or control panel element, so I would like to narrow my search to only this.

Can someone point me to a tutorial how to do this or maybe even give me a solution? i would like to change it from left (how it looks like right now) to the way it looks on the right side. I have found a few QA's on this page how to remove this or that, but i want to customize it how i like, not only remove something. • AMD Processors and the Windows Phone 8 Emulator

  I would madly appreciate it if anyone in this community would help me with my question. The background is that I want to develop Windows Phone 8 applications but both of my current computer processors do not have Hardware Virtualization & Second Level Address Translation that are needed to run the Emulator. I have my eyes on an AMD computer g7-2243us (I like it because it has 1600x900 screen res). I looked up this Link that shows that this computer's AMD processor (Next Gen AMD Quad-Core A8-4500M Accelerated 1.9GHz up to 2.8GHz 4MB L2 Cache Processor) supports AMD-V Hardware Virtualization. So, will this computer be able to run the emulator? Thank you so much for your answers. I'm pretty sure it will run the emulator, but I just want to make sure before spending $400.   I had a PC set up with a VPN. I used the Windows 7 firewall to block all NON-VPN traffic to the internet, but all LAN traffic was allowed. So, with the VPN connected I could connect to all networked machines and the internet. Without the VPN connected I could only connect to the LAN and had no internet access. Unfortunately my drive failed, and I'm setting up the machine again with a replacement drive. I can't for the life of me work out how to set up the firewall again. I can easily set it up to block all NON-VPN traffic, but can't work out how to that and still allow all LAN traffic whether the VPN is connected or not. Some pointers would be useful. Thanks.

• Windows Server 2008 SOMETIMES blocks connection to an FTP Site

  Hello Everyone Recently, our company has been having issue connecting to a special FTP server that we use offsite to upload small files. We can connect to the test server perfectly fine, but when we use the production ftp, it only randomly connects. If I plug my laptop directly into the modem and pull one of our other static IP addresses, I can connect just fine, but if I use our internal network, it is hit or miss. Also, turning OFF the firewall does NOT change the status of our connection problems. It will still time out. The weird issue is that it sometimes works, and when it does, it instantly asks for credentials and logs us on for that session, but if we disconnect and try again, it may or may not work. This also coincidentally occurred after uninstalling hamachi, and it blew away our internet settings on our Windows Server 2008 box, but everything else is working fine, and it was working fine before hamachi was installed.

  I'd like to sync my music from my internal hard drive to an external hard drive. Windows Media Player doesn't recognize my USB external hard drive as a syncable device. If I plug in any USB flash drive, it shows up as a device, but I can't seem to get it to recognize my external hard drive. Per some googling suggestions, the only suggestion I came across was to try enabling the "Portable Device Enumerator" service, but that yielded no luck. Is there any way to sync my music from WMP to an external hard drive?

  I have a time management application that I use at home quite a lot and have running most of the time. At home, I have a desktop PC and a couple of laptops scattered around the house...all networked together. Unfortunately, the application I use is not multi-user and I risk losing/corrupting data if it has been left running on one computer inadvertently while I start using it on another one in another part of the house. I use Live Mesh to automatically keep the application's database synced across the different computers and I just need some way of making sure that I don't start using the application on another computer before closing it down on the previous one. Anyone know of any Windows software that can detect if an application is running simultaneously on different computers on my network, and warn me if I am about to have two open at the same time?

• Belkin Wireless G router not working on Windows 7

  I have a Belkin F5D7230-4 Wireless G router which used to work on XP. I have a clean Windows 7 install (on the same desktop PC), and it just won't work. Device Manager lists the adapter as a USB device, but it says "The drivers for this device are not installed", even though the driver installer said the installation was OK. Manage Wiresless Networks says "wireless is not currently enabled". The WLAN AutoConfig service is running. My specific question is which of the two symptoms above should I go for first? Should I try to fix the driver installation somehow, or should I try to enable wireless? Is one caused by the other, or is this two independent problems? Any other thoughs that could help me are also appreciated.

I have checked all the cables and connections, all are OK. What happening is that when i try to open the computer on domain it takes long time to show the shares (around 2-3 mins). The goal - an Active/Active cluster for web server data How do I go about telling the cluster to be active for both nodes? Do I have to tell the cluster to be active/active? • Windows 7 unload driver/disconnect usb before restart

  In xp, my Tascam US 122 usb audio interface works fine. On my windows 7 computer the device works, however when i restart/shutdown it hangs at the "shutting down" screen forever. If the usb cable is removed prior to initiating restart/shutdown then everything goes fine, the computer restarts as normal. This is a known problem, running any other driver in compatibility mode doesnt fix the problem. Is there a method I can use to unload the device/drivers so that I dont have to reach round physically and disconnect the cable. Somebody suggested a spdt switch on the cable itself, but I am looking for a simpler method. Surely I can automate the unloading of the device through a script or such? Any ideas are greatly welcomed thanks

  I have the following dual-screen set up on my Windows 7 PC: [2][1], that means my secondary monitor is on the right side of my primary monitor. Now I have a dual-screen wallpaper that should stretch across the monitors. I have set it to "Tile" mode. Problem: The wallpaper invariably starts at [1] (left edge of the image being on the left edge of [1]), and then continues on [2]. It basically splits the wrong way, producing a rather awkward look. How can I make the wallpaper appear correctly (i.e. left edge of the image being on the left edge of [2])?

  I have a folder containing files like radiobutton-clicked.png radiobutton-foobar.png radiobutton-foobarbaz.png ... etc. This is what happens when I search in Windows Explorer: radio: all files found radio*: all files found *button: all files found *radiobutton*: all files found radiobutton*: no results radiobutton: no results radio*button: all files found So what the hell does the * precisely do? Is there some documentation on this? And why does radio and radio*button work as a search term, but radiobutton not? Edit: I know that * is usually supposed to be a wildcard matching 0 or more characters. But obviously it doesn't in this case.
