• Cannot install Ubuntu on an Acer Aspire One 756

  I have used Ubuntu before, in virtual machines, but today I decided to make the leap and I bought a netbook to install Ubuntu as a "real" OS alongside Windows. The netbook I bought is an Acer Aspire One 756, with a 64-bit Intel processor, 4GB RAM, and Windows 8 as the default OS. I have now encountered several obstacles that actually prevent me from installing Ubuntu 12.10. Here are all the things I have tried so far: Used a live CD, in combination with a USB DVD drive. (I should point out that the Aspire One does not have an optical drive.) The computer does not boot in Ubuntu; the drive keeps spinning, but nothing happens, even though I changed the boot order in the BIOS. Used a USB drive created via the tool available on pendrivelinux.com. Again, I've made changes to the BIOS to make sure the computer tries to boot from USB before using the built-in HDD. The results vary in this case: sometimes, the computer keeps rebooting like crazy until I remove the USB drive, at which point the computer boots into Windows 8, as expected. If I use a different USB drive, I get an error message that says that the USB drive has been blocked due to "the current security policy". Tried to install Ubuntu via Wubi. The program appears to install something, but at some point during the installation process, I get a non-specified error message and nothing else happens. I am not sure if these are known issues; in any case, searching the forum has not yielded any results, so I thought I should simply describe my problem here in the hope that this question has not been answered before. I would greatly appreciate any help with this annoying problem. Of course, if anything is unclear, do not hesitate to ask for further details.

• Empty APN list on your Android phone? Restart the phone to fix it

  Today I tried to connect to internet on my Google Galaxy Nexus running on 4.2.2 using Cellular Data connection and it failed. Tried reaching customer care representative to figure out why data connection is not working, but the robots (Interactive Voice Response systems) never allowed me to reach a human. After digging through the settings I found empty list of APN (Access Point Names) is the reason for not able to connect to internet. Not sure what caused APN list to vanish but I tried to create a new one that matches with the settings required for AT & T mobile. To my surprise I found that the newly created APN is also not shown in the APN list. Well there is something wrong with the phone – my APN’s are not shown as well as the newly created one is also not displayed. A simple Google search on this problem shown many forum discussions list and the solution to resolve the issue is to restart the phone. As soon as I restarted my phone the APN list is automatically populated and I’m able to connect to internet on my mobile.

• Ubuntu 12.04 nomodeset fixes boot problem but causes screen resolution to get stuck

  I've been searching the askubuntu forum for the past 3 days trying to figure out what's going on with my system and I have tried a lot of things but to no avail. So, I will explain my situation and tell you what I have tried and I hope someone can help me :) I have an: HP Workstation xw4100 Pentium(R) 4 3.00 GHz 1.5 GB RAM NVIDIA Quadro4 380 XGL graphics card It came with Windows XP and I set it up (with WUBI) to dual boot with Ubuntu 12.04 After installation I had the problem that so many people had with it booting to a black screen (mine was actually booting to the terminal basic shell) that is fixed by adding nomodeset into the grub. When I do that, MY screen resolution becomes stuck in 1280x768 (as opposed to 1366x768 before adding nomodeset) (and also, when running XP the best resolution is 1280x720) When I go to "additional drivers" it doesn't show any proprietary drivers, so I manually downloaded them using this command: sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install nvidia-current but after rebooting, that made the graphics even worse (now stuck as 800x600) SO I tried to configure the drivers with sudo nvidia-xconfig but that simply created an empty xorg.config file. I found one place where a guy gave information to manually input into the xorg.config file but that had no effect at all. Lastly I tried to install previous versions of the NVIDIA drivers, but they wouldn't even fully install. So now I have just re-installed Ubuntu 12.04 and I either need to find a better solution to the first problem (nomodeset) or get the nouveau driver to correctly configure to work with my nvidia graphics. • How to fix "Disk drive for /boot/efi is not ready or not present"?

  After I updated BIOS/UEFI version to 1101 on an Asus P8Z68-V PRO motherboard Ubuntu (11.10) did not boot. After POST all I saw was a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner. I booted an Ubuntu 11.10 live-CD and set the flag for the 20 MB partition before my boot partition to "bios_grub". Then I was able to boot and login. But now every time I boot and Ubuntu loads I get the following message: Disk drive for /boot/efi is not ready or not present. Continue waiting or press s to skip or m for manual recovery. I am able to login if I choose to ignore it by pressing s, but what does this message mean? How can I fix what the message warns about? After logging in I have noticed that /boot/efi is empty. The following forum post speaks of the same issue ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1893030. Updating to the latest BIOS/UEFI - version 3203, did not have any effect on this issue.

• The best way to learn how to extend Orchard

  We do have tutorials on the Orchard site, but we can't cover all topics, and recently I've found myself more and more responding to forum questions by pointing people to an existing module that was solving a similar problem to the one the question was about. I really like this way of learning by example and from the expertise of others. This is one of the reasons why we decided that modules would by default come in source code form that we compile dynamically. it makes them easy to understand and easier to modify for your own purposes. Hackability FTW! But how do you crack open a module and look at what's inside? You can do it in two different ways. First, you can just install the module from the gallery, directly from your Orchard instance's admin panel. Once you've done that, you can just look into your Modules directory under the web site. There is now a subfolder with the name of the new module that contains a csproj that you can open in Visual Studio or add to your Orchard solution. Second, you can simply download the package (it's NuGet) and rename it to a .zip extension. NuGet being based on Zip, this will open just fine in Windows Explorer: What you want to dig into is the Content/Modules/[NameOfTheModule] folder, which is where the actual code is. • Should ATI catalyst be installed for sake of openCL?

  I have a HP Envy 4 1025tx with Hybrid graphics. Although this is a 64bit system, I've installed 32bit Ubuntu on it for some reasons.(Hybrid graphics don't do well with 64bit Ubuntu.-"Some one on some forum") I had heating problems with the GPU but I've fixed them all with vgaswitcheroo. But now I wanted to use my Blender on my Ubuntu. To my surprise Blender didn't detect the dedicated 7670m card in my machine. I've confirmed with cat /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch Both IGD and DIS were up and running. I dont seem to have libopencl on my /usr/lib even though my synaptic manager says that I have installed it. I'm not quite sure what I've installed. It says that I've installed "ocl-icd-libopencl1". So my question is... Do I have opencl on my system? If not do I have to get propreitary ATI drivers for sake of opencl(fglrx wrecks up my unity totally on my system I need directions to fix it if this is the choice)? Should I get a 64bit Ubuntu installed on this system?

• Advice on software infrastructure for a FLOSS bounty site

  I am planning to set up a simple web site where people can offer bounties for work on FLOSS projects. Unfortunately I have no experience at web development (I am a C/C++ developer), so I was hoping someone might be able to suggest out-of-the-box packages (preferably Debian ones) I could use to build the site from. My idea of how the site would work is to keep things as simple as possible. The person proposing a bounty would enter a description with relevant links (particularly to a bugtracker entry with the project the work is to be done on, where the real discussion and work would take place) and information and place an initial contribution. Other people would be able to add (donate, not pledge) contributions, but any discussion would take place on the project's bugtracker. I am also planning to run a mailing list rather than a forum (at least initially), so that is not a requirement. Paypal seems to me to be the handiest payment mechanism. So overall what I need is probably a simple interface with Paypal integration and a simple database backend. I hope this is the right place for my question, if not I would be grateful for pointers to somewhere better. And of course, this is purely about the technical side, though I am more than happy to discuss other aspects of the project elsewhere.

Oracle R Distribution 2-13.2 now contains the ability to dynamically link the following libraries on both Windows and Linux: The Intel Math Kernel Library (MKL) on Intel chips The AMD Core Math Library (ACML) on AMD chips To take advantage of the performance enhancements provided by Intel MKL or AMD ACML in Oracle R Distribution, simply add the MKL or ACML shared library directory to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH system environment variable. This automatically enables MKL or ACML to make use of all available processors, vastly speeding up linear algebra computations and eliminating the need to recompile R.  Even on a single core, the optimized algorithms in the Intel MKL libraries are faster than using R's standard BLAS library. Open-source R is linked to NetLib's BLAS libraries, but they are not multi-threaded and only use one core. While R's internal BLAS are efficient for most computations, it's possible to recompile R to link to a different, multi-threaded BLAS library to improve performance on eligible calculations. Compiling and linking to R yourself can be involved, but for many, the significantly improved calculation speed justifies the effort. Oracle R Distribution notably simplifies the process of using external math libraries by enabling R to auto-load MKL or ACML. For R commands that don't link to BLAS code, taking advantage of database parallelism using embedded R execution in Oracle R Enterprise is the route to improved performance.   I am new to Farseer Physics and using version 3.3.1. I am after some help and would even be happy to receive Box2d answers just to ensure I get a response as I should then be able to convert it! -- Thanks ...After a lot of tinkering around I have managed to produce a thin vertical rectangle shape on the screen and I wish this to swing back and forth pinned at the top up to an angle I set (90 degrees would be fine for this sample). When it is approaching the top I wish it to slow down, then fall back the way it just came, increase speed then obviously slow to a stop at the top again. Almost how a swinging pirate ship would work at a theme park. • PHP safe_mode is a pain, looking for advice (Ubuntu 12.04 server, public webserver)

  Maybe askUbuntu isn't the right forum or I haven't provided the right search query but I haven't seen anything in my searching of askUbuntu on PHP safe_mode. I get lots of Windows Safe Mode and Ubuntu Safe Mode results but not PHP safe_mode. So I keep running into one issue after another regarding PHP safe_mode. (I write a lot of my own PHP code for various site maintenance tools and such.) I know safe_mode is going away in the next version of PHP but I still see a fair amount of advice recommending that you leave it enabled. I've recently consolidated from 3 servers down to 1 and at least one of those old servers had safe_mode disabled without any issues. (The lack of issues may have simply been a matter of good luck.) None of the previous 3 gave me this much trouble so I'm guessing so additional php.ini/PHP safe_mode setting was turned on for the new server. I primarily run WordPress for my websites with a few MediaWiki sites sprinkled in. And I am currently running into an issue using WordPress's auto update feature as it doesn't seem to be able to use fopen. WordPress is not relaying the actual error message to me but since I was just able to update the plugins I'm using this is a safe_mode problem. I've had a lot of safe_mode issues since consolidating to this new server. Long story short, the advice I'd seen to use safe_mode was all at least 2 years old. Do I really need it? If I disable PHP safe_mode are there a good set of security measures I should implement - i.e. chmod 640 /var/www/..., add this to your .htaccess, etc - to protect my server/sites? Thanks

• Intel 5100 AGN disconnects and then disables my Verizon FiOS Actiontec router

  I am a new user (my first trial) of Ubuntu and booted up my Windows Vista laptop up with the Ubuntu CD. I was able to connect wirelessly to my router and stay connected for about a minute. After that it would disconnect and my router would be disabled: none of my other wireless devices would see the signal any longer, as if it disappeared. I would have to cycle the router's power toggle off/on to get it to come back on and put out a signal again. This happened repeatedly. I experienced no other problems trying the software (i.e., accessed my files w/o issue). I did not attempt to connect with an Ethernet cable. Here are the specs on my system: laptop is HP Pavilion dv5 Notebook PC system type is 64-bit operating system CPU is Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 2.4GHz ram is 4 GB network card is Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN I read elsewhere in this forum that 64-bit systems may not be compatible with Ubuntu. Can anyone help me with this? I'd really like to be able to use this op system.

• Enterprise Manager Extensibility Exchange – Version 1.1 Now Available!

  Since its announcement at Oracle OpenWorld 2012, the Enterprise Manager Extensibility Exchange is becoming the source to access Enterprise Manager entities, including plug-ins, connectors, deployment procedures, assemblies, templates, and more.  Based on feedback, the Exchange has recently been updated so Enterprise Manager administrators can find and access Oracle and partner-built plug-ins and connectors easier. The Exchange enables anyone to contribute an Enterprise Manager entity through the “Contribute” tab, where information about the entity is captured and placed on the Exchange once it is approved.  The Exchange encourages comment through the Enterprise Manager Forum.  An Oracle partner can build a plug-in by accessing the Extensibility Development Kit (EDK) found at the Development Resources tab.  Oracle partners and customers can can also engage a partner that has built its practice specializing in plug-in development and deployment.  One of those partners is Blue Medora, which has effectively used the EDK to build plug-ins to manage non-Oracle targets.  Next week Blue Medora will be a "Guest Blogger" and tell a great story about heterogeneous datacenter management.Partners can also have their plug-ins validated through the Oracle Validated Integration (OVI) program.  NetApp is an example of a partner that recently built an Enterprise Manager plug-in and has validated it through the program.  Check back here in two weeks for their blog post describing the value of an Enterprise Manager "OVI" plug-in as well as discuss specifics the NetApp storage plug-in.  Check out the NetApp Enterprise Manager Validated Integration datasheet in the meantime.
