• CSS: resolution problem

  my site has three div elements, header, content and footer. i have a picture in header, and i want, that under big resolutions too it looks nice. so i take big image, with 1800px width. by so it looks nice in resolution of 1800, but now, in small resolutions(for example 1024), it shows only first 1024px of my picture, but i want it to show the center 1024px of picture. so is there any way, to set the backgound-image very big, but in small resolutions show center part of image? #header { background-image:url(../img/bg_header1.jpg); background-repeat:no-repeat; height:357px; width:100%; } thanks in advance

  I'm developing a Visual Studio Integration Package. When I try to run the Unit Tests that are included in the unit test project that is included in the template I get the following failure on the first test: The test adapter 'VsIdeHostAdapter' threw an exception while running test 'MenuItemCallback'. Call was rejected by callee. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80010001 (RPC_E_CALL_REJECTED)) It's intermittent- a new instance of Visual Studio always spins up, then sometimes it works but usually fails.

• Spawn a background process in Ruby

  I'm writing a ruby bootstrapping script for a school project, and part of this bootstrapping process is to start a couple of background processes (which are written and function properly). What I'd like to do is something along the lines of: `/path/to/daemon1 &` `/path/to/daemon2 &` `/path/to/daemon3 &` However, that blocks on the first call to execute daemon1. I've seen references to a Process.spawn method, but that seems to be a 1.9+ feature, and I'm limited to Ruby 1.8. I've also tried to execute these daemons from different threads, but I'd like my bootstrap script to be able to exit. So how can I start these background processes so that my bootstrap script doesn't block and can exit (but still have the daemons running in the background)? Thanks!

• When do married programmers find time to work?

  Hi people, Maybe my problem is unique (though I don't believe so), and probably I should go with it to the psychologist, but sinse I get married (~year ago) I feel that I don't have enough time to work anymore. For years I've been working at my day job doing regular stuff, and at nights I've been committing to the opensource projects, freelancing and self-educating. Now, I can't work at home at all, because once I start working, my wife either says that there're more important thing to do (walk out the dog, buy something in a grocery, etc.) or that I don't pay anough attention to her.. As a workaround, I've started getting up at 3-4AM in the morning to do the things I was usually doing nightly before. After a month of such schedule I feel myself totally crushed. So... 2 questions: Do you have the same problems, or I'm just a <..., who should say goodbye to programming, and start doing "really important things"? If you have the same problems, when do you find time to work? Maybe you know any cool lifehack or trick to spend at least some tome for doing the thing you like :) Best regards.

• Connecting to a WSE 3.0 Web Service From a WCF Client

  I'm having difficulty connecting to a 3rd party WSE 3.0 web service from a WCF client. I have implemented the custom binding class as indicated in this KB article: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms734745.aspx The problem seems to have to do with the security assertion used by the web service - UsernameOverTransport. When I attempt to call a method, I get the following exception: System.InvalidOperationException: The 'WseHttpBinding'.'[namespace]' binding for the 'MyWebServiceSoap'.'[namespace]' contract is configured with an authentication mode that requires transport level integrity and confidentiality. However the transport cannot provide integrity and confidentiality.. It is expecting a username, password, and CN number. In the example code supplied to us by the vendor, these credentials are bundled in a Microsoft.Web.Services3.Security.Tokens.UsernameToken. Here's the example supplied by the vendor: MyWebServiceWse proxy = new MyWebServiceWse(); UsernameToken token = new UsernameToken("Username", "password", PasswordOption.SendPlainText); token.Id = "<supplied CN Number>"; proxy.SetClientCredential(token); proxy.SetPolicy(new Policy(new UsernameOverTransportAssertion(), new RequireActionHeaderAssertion())); MyObject mo = proxy.MyMethod(); This works fine from a 2.0 app w/ WSE 3.0 installed. (I can provide the makefile if it's relevant.) I can compile TestMe.cpp from a command-line with no problem: g++ TestMe.cpp -IC:\gtest-1.5.0\gtest-1.5.0\include -L../gtest/staticlib -lgtest -o TestMe.exe It runs as expected. However, I cannot get this to compile in Qt. My Qt project file, in the same directory: SOURCES += TestMe.cpp INCLUDEPATH += C:\gtest-1.5.0\gtest-1.5.0\include LIBS += -L../gtest/staticlib -lgtest This results in 17 "unresolved external symbol" errors related to gtest functions. I'm pulling my hair out here, as I'm sure it's something simple. Any ideas?

• How to get SVN to ignore Mac "._" files?

  My development server is accessed by several OSX users, and their OS tends to leave lots of unnecessary files around the place, all starting with dot underscore ("._"). I know OSX can be told not to create these on network drives, but they still sneak in. I'd like SVN to ignore anything starting with "._", but I can't seem to get it to work, even though it looks like it should be simple. I've added "._*" to the SVN global ignore pattern, but SVN is still trying to add and commit these files. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? My full SVN ignore pattern is: global-ignores = *.o *.lo *.la *.al .libs *.so *.so.[0-9]* *.a *.pyc *.pyo *.rej *~ #*# .#* .*.swp .DS_Store Thumbs.db ._* *.bak *.tmp nbproject I don't know if it makes any difference, but I'm trying to set this on both Ubuntu and Ubuntu server by editing the /etc/subversion/config file.

  We've been profiling our code recently and we've come across a few annoying hotspots. They're in the form assert(a == b, a + " is not equal to " + b) Because some of these asserts can be in code called a huge amount of times the string concat starts to add up. assert is defined as: def assert(assumption : Boolean, message : Any) = .... why isn't it defined as: def assert(assumption : Boolean, message : => Any) = .... That way it would evaluate lazily. Given that it's not defined that way is there an inline way of calling assert with a message param that is evaluated lazily? Thanks

• Useful training courses that aren't specific to a single technology

  I have possibly the best problem in the world. I have about £1600 left in a training budget and I need to find something to spend it on. I can spend it on anything that could be considered training. Books, courses, conferences, etc. I would like to find a course that would benifit a software developer but is not about learning a specific programming technology. I don't really want to spend it on a technical training course. These topics are usually best learned with a good book and some trial and error. I have also already been on a general business/management training course and a PRINCE2 project management course. I am currently working on a project on my own so am responsible for communicating with the client, requirements gathering, project management, etc., as well as the coding. What training have you found useful outside the usual technical stuff? Has anyone done any business analysis courses? What were they like? Are there any courses on some of the practicalities of working with software, e.g. automated test and deployment strategies, handling technical support? I would prefer a course in the UK but I can travel if necessary.

The problems include: Too many data points for the trend line Trend line does not follow a Bezier curve (spline) The source of the problem is with the incrementer class. The incrementer is provided with the data points iteratively. There does not appear to be a way to get the set of data. • Programatically send SMS to email using Verizon Motorola Droid on Android

  Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew the proper way to send an SMS message to an e-mail address using Verizon's CDMA Motorola Droid phone. The internal messaging application appears to automagically do this. While 3rd party applications like SMSPopup don't seem to be able to properly reply to e-mail addresses unless you compose the message inside the messaging application. When the internal messaging application sends a SMS message there's a corresponding 'RIL_REQUEST_CDMA_SEND_SMS' entry in the logcat (adb logcat -b radio). When you send a SMS to an e-mail address it prints the same thing, so behind the scenes it looks as though it is sending an sms. The interesting thing is that if you look at the content provider sent box the messages are addressed to various 1270XX-XXX-XXXX numbers. On other services you can send e-mail addresses by sending a SMS to a predefined short sms number. And then formatting your SMS as emailaddress subject message i.e. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMS_gateway#Carrier-Provided_SMS_to_E-Mail_Gateways For example, using T-mobile's number (500) you can send a SMS to an e-mail using the following: SmsManager smsMgr = SmsManager.getDefault(); smsMgr.sendTextMessage("500", null, "[email protected] message sent to an e-mail address from a SMS", null, null); Does anyone know if It is possible to programatically send SMS to email messages from a CDMA Android phone? Does Verizon actually send your replies as SMS messages or are they actually sent as MMS or normal http email messages? Any ideas about how to intercept what the raw message being sent to see what's going on? It might be possible that Verizon somehow generates a fake number temporarily tied to an e-mail address (since repeated messages are not sent to the same number). But, that seems pretty heavy handed. Also, MyAuthenticator also has the username and password, which seems redundant with the URL. Is there another way to specify the protocol? (I didn't see it in the JavaDoc for IMAP.)

• Is it possible to use best_in_place with typeahead from twitter bootstrap?

  Basically, I am using best_in_place in my rails webapp to let users edit their profile info in place. The thing is, I would like users to be presented with a typeahead form for certain entries.. Here's what I'm working with: <p>College/University: <input type="text" class="span3" style="margin: 0 auto;" data-provide="typeahead" data-items="8" data-source='["University of Pennsylvania","Harvard","Yale","Princeton","Cornell","Brown","Columbia","Dartmouth"]'></p> This gives me a working form box with typeahead. However, I want to be able to wrap this in best_in_place with something like <%= best_in_place @student, :education %> so that users only see the typeahead form when they click on the text, and upon clicking away from the box or hitting enter the selection is stored in the database. Is there a reasonably easy way to do this?

  I've a few lines of code within a project, that I can't see the value of... buffer[i] = (currentByte & 0x7F) | (currentByte & 0x80); It reads the filebuffer from a file, stored as bytes, and then transfers then to buffer[i] as shown, but I can't understand what the overall purpose is, any ideas? • Objective-c string appending causes exception

  Hello Everyone, The following code is causing me some problems. The third line causes a program crash... it doesn't happen the first time I step through but somehow later on in the program. If I comment out that third line, the program runs smoothly. NSString *myRequestString = @"text"; int i = 1; myRequestString = [myRequestString stringByAppendingString:[NSString stringWithFormat: @"t=%d", i]]; That code causes this exception: * -[CFString release]: message sent to deallocated instance 0xb4c43fe0 On a side note, can anyone tell me how to concatenate strings in objective-c like any other normal language... I can't believe that there is no concatenation operator. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Is it possible to access an object's fields if that object has been loaded via the org.hibernate.Session.load(Class clazz, Serializable id) method and there is no active session? • CSS Attribute Content Selector multiple declarations

  I have this in my CSS: div#headwrap ul li a[href*="dev"] {background: #034769}; div#headwrap ul li a[href*="music"] {background: #A61300}; div#headwrap ul li a[href*="opinion"] {background: #b2d81e}; div#headwrap ul li a[href*="work"] {background: #ffc340}; So, my expected behavior is that where a link (a) within a list item (li) inside a unordered list (ul) inside a div with id "headwrap" has an href that contains "dev", the link will have a background color of #034769. If the link has an href that contains "music" it will have a background color of #A61300, and so on. However, what I am seeing is that the rule is only correctly applied to "dev". If I reorder the CSS declarations (putting music first, for instance), it only gets applied to "music". I'm testing in Firefox and Chrome, both are doing the same thing. Only the first one is applied. Anyone have any ideas why?

  One particular user is getting an exception when connecting an application I created to a third party app using COM. The connection fails with the following error: Source: mscorlib Message: Exception from HRESULT: 0x80040202 This software works fine for other users. Any ideas what could be going on? The error occurs just before the app adds some event handlers to some of the COM objects from the third party app. It is able to successfully instantiate the objects, though.
