• Smartassembly 5: it lives! Early Access builds now available

  I'm pleased to announce that, late last week, we put out the first early access build for Smartassembly 5, Red Gate's fantastic code protection and error reporting tool, which we acquired last September. You can download it via: http://www.red-gate.com/messageboard/viewforum.php?f=116 It's obviously pretty early days, so please do not try to use this to protect a production application, but we've already done a lot of work in some key areas: We're simplifying and streamlining the licensing model (you won't see this yet, but a lot of the work on this has already been done). We've improved usability of the product, with a better menu, reordering of project settings, and better defaults. We've also fixed a load of bugs, which I'll let Alex blog about in more detail. On a slightly more trivial level, the curly braces are also no more. Over the coming weeks, we'll be adding more improvements, and starting usability tests.   I'm doing my 3rd year CSE Engineering. I guess this is the right time to ask this question! As in the next year, I'm going to do projects, "get my hands dirty". And there is only few days left out, as I know many people in Stack Overflow are working in Software field, I thought to ask these question. Does the project that I'm doing in my final year need to be excellent? If so, what kind of project to do? And how do you say that the project is excellent or not? Writing the code is very fun and serious at times. But the code should have a good algorithm? And mostly in any software companies interview, what kind of question they ask? Not but not the least, mastering in any particular language speaks in interviews?

  Late last night I got to record an interview with Conor Cunningham.Most people that know Conor have come across him as the product team wizard that knows so much about query processing and optimization in SQL Server. Conor is currently spending quite a lot of time working on Windows Azure SQL Database, which we used to know as SQL Azure. I'm still trying to think of a good way to say "WASD". I suppose I'll pronounce it like "wassid". Windows Azure SQL Reporting is easier. I think it just needs to be pronounced like "wazza" with a very Australian accent.In the show, we've spent time on the current state of the platform, on dispelling a number of common misbeliefs about the product, and hopefully on answering most of the common questions that seem to get asked about it. • Why did Ubuntu and Windows start hanging mysteriously after I took a vacation?

  I installed Ubuntu alongside my Windows 7, after partitioning my HDD using Easeus partitioning manager. It was working perfectly, no problems, no data lost or corruption. Then I went away for 2 days and in my absence I don't know what happened in that period, now both Windows 7 and Ubuntu keep hanging continuously, like when you paint and change a brush it'll hang, I mean on very simple commands and I know my computer does not hang on such petty things. I use it for developing music and the specification are: Model: DELL-XPS Processor: Intel i5, 2.53 GHz RAM/Memory: 4GB Hard disk size: 500GB HDD Windows 7 partition: 417 GB Ubuntu Partition: 50 GB Please Help.

• Android: debug certificate expired error

  I started up Eclipse today, created a new project, and immediately had an error before I had changed a single line: Error generating final archive: Debug Certificate expired on 11/12/11 When installed, the Android SDK generates a "debug" signing certificate for you in a file called "debug.keystore". Eclipse uses this certificate rather than forcing you to create a new one for every project. In older versions of Eclipse, the certificate was only valid for 365 days, but as I understand it the default has been changed to 30 years in newer versions. If for whatever reason you don't want to upgrade Eclipse, you can manually delete the certificate to for Eclipse to generate a new one. You can find the location in Preferences -> Android -> Build -> Default debug keystore (mine was in C:\Users\myUserName\.android\); just delete the "debug.keystore" file, then go back into Eclipse and Clean the project to generate a new file.

• Domain appears taken when searched from a different host, but whois says 'No match'

  I have recently registered a new .name domain. It is just myfirstname.name, something like nanda.name. My debit card has been billed, but my domain control panel doesn't show any information regarding the new domain. I have raised a ticket with their support and there is no response yet. It's been 3 days. I checked some other registrars and almost all of them say that nanda.name is taken, but when I search whois either from my command line or the numerous whois web services, I get No match as answer each time. What gives? PS : I should add that this registrar's support is known to suck, which, by the time I found, is a bit late.

• Problem in Loading certain Websites in Ubuntu 11.10

  I have a DSL connection in Ubuntu 11.04 and am having problems loading content from certain websites mostly providing CDN services. I have tried every suggestion asked at problem loading internet pages as I have the same problem. Also tried to remove the DNS Cache and Browser Cache. I have tried using Google DNS Server: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, but nothing seems to work. Though when I browse the websites in Windows XP then it does not pose any problem. This problem has come up only few days ago and has affected every browser(Chrome, Firefox and Opera) in Ubuntu 11.04. Thanks in advance.

• Attachment handling for web application with Jackrabbit

  I need to manage attachments on my Spring web application and I thought to use an open source repository. My app it's a job approval system using J2EE / SPRING 3 Framework and Postgress DB to allow user to tracks the job,right through every step of the approval process. It is a fully managed, collaborative system that operates from a central server and is accessed by a standard internet browser. An user should be able to add an attach to a request or an approval step, so, I though to use Jackrabbit with Postgres database persistence manager. I took a look to this post: http://onjava.com/pub/a/onjava/2006/10/04/what-is-java-content-repository.html?page=1 It's really interesting but, I've some question about this kind of solution :- I seen that Jackrabbit standalone as a Derby database embedded solution for persistence, is it enough for a professional use of the repository with more than 50 request / days (with attachment) ? Is there a reason for which I should use another database manager for persistence instead of the default one ?

• Dealing with "I-am-cool-and-you-are-dumb" manager [closed]

  I have been working with a software company for about 6 months now. I like the projects I work on there and I really like all the people there except for 1 guy. That guy is technically smart, and he is a co-founder of the company. He is an okay guy in person (the kind you wouldn't want to care about much) but things get tricky when he is your manager. In general I am all okay but there are times when I feel I am not being treated fairly: He doesn't give much thought to when he makes mistakes and when I do something similar, he is super critical. Recently he went as far as to say "I am not sure if I can trust you with this feature". The detais of this specific case are this: I was working on this feature, and I was already a couple of hours over my normal working hours, and then I decided to stop and continue tomorrow. We use git, and I like to commit changes locally and only push when I feel they are ready. This manager insists that I push all the changes to the central repo (in case my hard drive crashes). So I push the change, and the ticket is marked as "to be tested". Next day I come in, he sits next to me and starts complaining and says that I posted above. I really didn't know what to say, I tried to explain to him that the ticket is still being worked upon but he didn't seem to listen. He interrupts me in-between when I am coding, which I do not mind, but when I do that same, his face turns like this :| and reacts as if his work was super important and I am just wasting his time. He asks me to accumulate all questions, and then ask him altogether which is not always possible, as you need a clarification before you can continue on a feature implementation. And when I am coding, he talks on the phone with his customers next to me (when he can go to the meeting room with his laptop) and doesn't care. He made me switch to a whole new IDE (from Netbeans to a commercial IDE costing a lot of money) for a really tiny feature (which I later found out was in Netbeans as well!). I didn't make a big deal out of it as I am equally comfortable working with this new IDE, but I couldn't get the science behind his obsession. He said this feature makes sure that if any method is updated by a programmer, the IDE will turn the method name to red in places where it is used. I told him that I do not have a problem since I always search for method usage in the project and make sure its updated. IDEs even have refactoring features for exactly that, but... I recently implemented a feature for a project, and I was happy about it and considering him a senior, I asked him his comments about the implementation quality.. he thought long and hard, made a few funny faces, and when he couldn't find anything, he said "ummm, your program will crash if JS is disabled" - he was wrong, since I had made sure it would work fine with default values even if JS was disabled. I told him that and then he said "oh okay". BUT, the funny thing is, a few days back, he implemented something and I objected with "But that would not run if JS is disabled" and his response was "We don't have to care about people who disable JS" :-/ Once he asked me to investigate if there was a way to modify a CMS generated menu programmatically by extending the CMS, I did my research and told him that the only was is to inject a menu item using JavaScript / jQuery and his reaction was "ah that's ugly, and hacky, not acceptable" and two days later, I see that feature implemented in the same way as I had suggested. The point is, his reaction was not respectful at all, even if what I proposed was hacky, he should be respectful, that I know what's hacky and if I am suggesting something hacky, there must be a reason for it. There are plenty of other reasons / examples where I feel I am not being treated fairly. I want your advice as to what is it that I am doing wrong and how to deal with such a situation. The other guys in the team are actually very good people, and I do not want to leave the job either (although I could, if I want to). All I want is respect and equal treatment. I have thought about talking to this guy in a face to face meeting, but that worries me that his attitude might get worse and make things more difficult for me (since he doesn't seem to be the guy who thinks he can be wrong too). I am also considering talking to the other co-founder but I am not sure how he will take it (as both founders have been friends forever). • #altnetseattle in Closing

  So again, the #altnetseattle Conference easily was one of the most useful events of the year for me.  The amount of ideas, thoughts, and conversations that happen in just those two days often outweigh all the presentations I see at other conferences throughout the year.  The reason is simple, they are directed, to the point, and done with the ideal of open spaces.  This makes each session exhaustive on a particular topics.  Throw together some of the smartest people in the field and you have a bang up awesome energy and conversation. I got to talk about cloud computer, a little bit, and REST Architecture as sessions I kicked off myself.  Those were a blast.  I also got to meet a ton of other super talented like minded developers and engineers that are out there kicking the tires of .NET (and other languages/tech stacks like Ruby on Rails). Overall the conference rocked and I will definitely be coming back!  With that, I am headed home to Portland.

• My domain PageRank shows as unavailable, why is that?

  My domain, http://www.anovaordemmundial.com , has been snatched by some opportunist when I failed to renew the domain. I know, it's all my fault :/ . After I have being ripped off and bought my domain back, and everything is configured and working, the pagerank for that domain shows as unavailable. Also searches for "nova ordem mundial" (in portuguese), which used to show my domain as the first result in searches in any language, now don't show it anymore. Do you think this is something temporary and it will recover its pagerank after a full crawl by google? There exists hundreds of sites pointing to my domain, that is why I got the previous relevance in searches. The domain is back for more than 5 days already. In reality, bing already Is there anything I can do to help get my domain back to its pagerank??? Thanks for the help!

• Will the new Unity desktop be programmed in Qt?

  Will the desktop version of Unity, scheduled to appear in 11.04, be programmed using Qt? I ask this in relation to Matt Zimmerman's blog posting of several days ago, where he intimated that Qt was the more pragmatic choice for an SDK to get coders more involved. As a corollary, it would make sense if the whole desktop were in Qt, which would also make it possible to do a lot more beautiful effects, and make a more visually engrossing desktop experience. In any event, please elaborate on the future role of Qt in the Ubuntu desktop.

• JAX-RS 2.0 Early Draft - Third Edition Available

  JAX-RS 2.0 Early Draft Third Edition is now available. This updated draft include new samples explaining the features and clarifications in content-negotiation, discovery of providers, client-side API, filters and entity interceptors and several other sections. Provide feedback to users@jax-rs-spec. Jersey 2.0, the Reference Implementation of JAX-RS 2.0, released their fourth milestone a few days ago as well. Several features have already been implemented there. Note, this is an early development preview and several parts of the API and implementation are still evolving. Feel like trying it out? Simply go to Maven Central (of course none of this is production quality at this point). The latest JAX-RS Javadocs and Jersey 2.0 API docs are good starting points to explore. • Minecraft Fullscreen not working

  I upgraded to Quantal recently, and Minecraft seems to not want to run in fullscreen. When I go to fullscreen it, the screen will go black for a second, as if it was about to go fullscreen normally, but then it just restores back into its window. So far I have tried: using different JREs (I've tried openjdk 6 and 7, as well as oracle7). Oracle's jre wouldn't even run Minecraft (I just got a black screen after logging in) switching graphics drivers (tried nvidia-current, nvidia-current-updates, and xserver-xorg-video-nouveau) updating minecraft bin files updating lwjgl libraries separately from the lwjgl site None of this seemed to work at all. I am running Minecraft with the command java -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -cp minecraft.jar net.minecraft.LauncherFrame Graphics card is GeForce 9500 GS/PCIe/SSE2. Everything was working fine a few days ago when I was on 12.04.

• How can I downgrade my version of Evolution to the one used in Ubuntu 11.04?

  I just upgraded, and like a few other users I had issues with Evolution email after the upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 and then 12.04. I know to make backups, but in this case I stupidly didn't think that the program would be changed (Firefox wasn't modified at all), and so I failed to make a backup. Three days later I am still having issues, and recovering the emails is proving to be difficult with only partial recovery or it not working at all. My question is, can I add in some source to use the 11.04 version of Evolution, since that version was working fine and would know what to do with the current files (Inbox, Outbox, etc.) I also noticed that Evolution's restore feature said it changed the way emails are handled, so it seems like a downgrade could put everything back to normal. Worst case scenario, I start over, but I wanted to try everything first. Thanks in advance! I'm also open to any suggestions for restoring the old emails files to the current version of Evolution.

  A few minutes ago I signed up at a new webhost. I have yet to move my sites over. Upon initial SSH connection, I checked the load and memory usage, they do seem rather higher than I would like: # uptime 12:06:51 up 71 days, 23:23, 1 user, load average: 9.02, 9.49, 9.45 # free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 33014800 31927192 1087608 0 2384812 17729816 -/+ buffers/cache: 11812564 21202236 Swap: 16787916 8584 16779332 Is that a bit to packed? I'm only paying about $5 USD per month, so I don't expect <0.1 loads, but ~10 is worrisome. Is it not? Also, there is no /etc/issue file so I tried other methods to guess the OS: # uname -a Linux box358.bluehost.com 2.6.32-20120131.55.1.bh6.x86_64 #1 SMP Tue Jan 31 15:43:27 EST 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux # which yum /usr/bin/yum # which apt-get # That looks like CentOS / RHEL 6.2 possibly?

• Analog sticks not working, qtsixa+PCSX combination

  A few days ago I finally got my PS3 controller to work with QtSixA, and then in PCSX after some tweaking with the controls. But, I haven't figured out how on earth I will be able to get the analog sticks working. I've been triyng to add them in the controls for all angles in PCSX, where you move the analog stick the way it's supposed to be and then clicking a button to change the setting. I've enabled joysticks in the options for the controller, and my options in my controller are: [x] Enable buttons [x] Enable sensitive buttons [x] Enable Axis [ ] Enable accellerometers [ ] Enable Acceleration [ ] Enable Speed [ ] Enable position The controller is a standard PS3 controller, Dualshock 3. • Unable to install Nvidia drivers

  a few days ago I installed ubuntu 11.10 on my friends computer. Despite all of our efforts we are unable to open the default unity and it will only open the 2d interface. I have been told in the IRC chat room that we need to install the graphics card drivers(nvidia geforce 420.) When I check the additional drivers app it doesn't show any to install. I tried installing the ones from the nvidia website but no luck, I also forgot to mention. I don't know if it means anything but he has a 64 bit computer and it is ubuntu 11.10 64bit.
