  Been working my * off on this for a few days trying to keep updating it to make it most efficient with everything I learn... I'm quite proud of it so far considering I'm not actually the best coder lol most JS and PHP confuses the crap outa me unless I do it from scratch. So anyways here is the link. • I want to version control my entire slice

  I'm renting a slice (i.e., a VPS) from Slicehost. I've a spent a day or two filling up /usr with my favorite packages, /etc with configs and init scripts, and so on. Now I want to: save this whole setup somewhere (e.g., to load onto another machine). see what changes I've made to which files revert changes, tag revisions, and all that other good version control stuff Saving a disk image gives me (1), but not (2) and (3). Using Subversion (svn import / svn://someotherhost) might give me all three, but I expect problems if I actually try to check a project out into / and maintain .svn directories in root-owned areas. And to load my setup onto a fresh slice, I'd need to install an svn client on it first. Is there a good way to do what I want to do?

• PredicateBuilder "And" Method not working

  I have downloaded the predicate builder and am having a difficult time getting it to work with the entity framework. Here is my code: v_OrderDetail is the entity var context = new OrdersEntities(); Expression<Func<v_OrderDetail,bool>> whereClause = w => true; var predicate = PredicateBuilder.True<v_OrderDetail>(); predicate.And(w => w.Status == "Work"); var results = context.v_OrderDetail.AsExpandable().Where(predicate); When I look at the results I get back every order. The And predicate doesn't seem to take. When I look at the predicate.parameters.count it only shows 1. I'm not sure, but I would expect it to show 2 after I add the second one. Any help is greatly appreciated.

• How to rewrite the URL

  I have a small application built using Seam 2.2, Richfaces 3.3, JBoss 5.1. Most of the page navigation adds the request parameters to the target URL. I would like to hide parameters to be hidden to the customer who is using the application (e.g. I would expect the URL to be something like "http://localhost:8080/books/Book.seam". The parameters (userId, orderId and cmId) are currently mapped to the backend bean via Book.page.xml. How do I prevent the request parameters from showing up in the browser URL, as it also allows the customer to manipulate the URL. We did look at seam URL re-writing feature, it talked about manipulating say the primary key id in a REST format, not sure how to accomplish something more complex like the above use case in a elegant fashion.

  is it possible to do multiple joins: from g in dataContext.Groups join ug in dataContext.UsersGroups on g.Id equals ug.GroupId join u in dataContext.Users on u. where ug.UserId == user.Id select GroupRepository.ToEntity(g); in the sample above all is fine until i press "." in the end of the 3rd line. there i expect to get intellisense and write u.Id == ug.UserId but it doesn't appear. and of course this code doesn't compile after. what did i wrong?

• Ivy: Publishing all artefacts in a directory

  I'm looking to move to Apache Ivy for dependency management on one of our existing projects. The project publishes many artefacts, and the artefacts it produces are likely to change in the future, so I don't want to enumerate all of the publications in the ivy.xml file -- I'd like Ivy to just publish all the files in a given directory. I considered auto-generating a list of the files built and using XSLT to insert it into the ivy.xml, but that seems a little cumbersome for what I'd expect to be a reasonably common requirement. Is there a better way to do this? Can Ivy pick up all the files in a directory and ignore the publications in the Ivy file? Or is there some way to get Ivy to use different files for publication and for fetching, so I can avoid having to use XSLT to merge the files.

• Can grep be used on a Perl variable?

  Is it possible one way or another to, within a Perl script, effectively execute grep against a Perl variable? An equivalent Perl function would be equally acceptable, I just want to keep the solution as simple as possible. For example: #!/usr/bin/perl #!/bin/grep $var="foobar"; $newvar="system('grep -o "foo" $var'); sprintf $newvar; Where I expect sprintf $newvar to output foo. Would also welcome any feedback on best practice here. I am not extremely familiar with Perl.

• Noob Rails ? about learning Rails

  Hi All I have been programming for a while and for the past 3 or 4 months have been learning ruby. I am not an expert by any means but I believe I have the basics down. I decided to start learning RoR and bought the "Agile Web Development with Rails 3rd Edition" and have been dutifully going through the chapters one by one. Currently I am in chapter 8 and have had no problems so far. My question is I know I have learned several things so far and I know that I am starting to get a sense of the Rails framework I have this fear that I am just not learning as much as I should. Some things I get and understand the interconnections while I feel on other things I am just going through the motions and don't fully comprehend the total interconnectivity. Now, there is still a large amount of the book for me to complete. I guess I am just wondering if I complete this book what should I expect to be able to accomplish on my own and what should be my next steps. Thanks

• What should every programmer know?

  Regardless of programming language(s) or operating system(s) used or the environment they develop for, what should every programmer know? Some background: I'm interested in becoming the best programmer I can. As part of this process I'm trying to understand what I don't know and would benefit me a lot if I did. While there are loads of lists around along the lines of "n things every [insert programming language] developer should know", I have yet to find anything similar which isn't limited to a specific language. I also expect this information to be of interest and benefit to others.

• Memory leak - debugger and memory analyzer disagreeing

  There is a memory leak in my android game - I've managed to narrow it down to a certain object, which has a list of objects to render on a texture. This object clears the list every time it draws though - so I can't work out how its managed to get thousands of elements in the list. I checked in the debugger and it doesn't have all these thousands of elements - usually about 2-20 which is what I'd expect... The game definitely slows down progressively only if I have rendering to texturing on. • Separation of logic from presentation: HTTP variable names?

  Hello all, This could probably be considered an academic question, rather than a real world one - but throwing it out to see if anyone has any great ideas! We all know that keeping the business logic of an application separate from the presentation is a good idea (I'm looking at web-apps atm), but there needs to be an understanding between the business logic for what HTTP variables to expect (and then process) and the variable names which are sent by the presentation layer. Is this simply a matter of telling the designer what variable names to use in a template? The template doesn't need to know what the variable names are (unless using them for JS/CSS selectors), so why should they be 'hardcoded' in there. Or should the business logic put the names into variables to be printed out? Another layer of complexity for the templates? Does anyone have any experience of this, or thoughts on how to deal with it? Thanks, Allan

• Why does a function that takes IEnumerable<interface> not accept IEnumerable<class>?

  Say, for instance, I have a class: public class MyFoo : IMyBar { ... } Then, I would want to use the following code: List<MyFoo> classList = new List<MyFoo>(); classList.Add(new MyFoo(1)); classList.Add(new MyFoo(2)); classList.Add(new MyFoo(3)); List<IMyBar> interfaceList = new List<IMyBar>(classList); But this produces the error: `Argument '1': cannot convert from 'IEnumerable<MyFoo>' to 'IEnumerable<IMyBar>' Why is this? Since MyFoo implements IMyBar, one would expect that an IEnumerable of MyFoo could be treated as an IEnumerable of IMyBar. A mundane real-world example being producing a list of cars, and then being told that it wasn't a list of vehicles. It's only a minor annoyance, but if anyone can shed some light on this, I would be much obliged.

  I'm very curious about old programming languages, especially COBOL, and as Wikipedia couldn't really tell me much about this topic, I decided to ask it here: Was COBOL the first programming language really being used in financial, stock and banking systems? Where exactly was COBOL used? Was it used more frequently than Fortran or BASIC, for example? I don't know if you lived at that time, but how did people react to the rising COBOL? Did they expect it to be the future? When has COBOL actually stopped being used to create new, big systems? Are you sure that there are still important legacy apps written in COBOL out there? I can't believe that somehow.

• SQL bottleneck, how to fix

MsgBox ("The query took " & sngElapsed _ & " seconds to run.") As you can see, this loop does NOTHING. You'd expect it to finish in seconds, however it takes about 857 seconds to run (or 15 minutes). I dont know why it is so slow. Maybe the lotusnotes sql driver? any other ideas? (java based solution, any other solution) What my goal is: To get all the data from remote server and insert into local access table

• Mapped Stored Procedures in EF 1

  All, I'm using mapped Stored Procedures in EF 1. I've completed the following steps: 1) I've created my INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE queries in SQL Server. 2) I've built the EDMX and imported the INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE sprocs as part of my model. 3) I've set up a Stored Procedure Mapping on a table inside of my EDMX file. The INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE sprocs were mapped accordingly. Using this approach, I would expect to rebuild the application (and mine builds successfully) and then see the Stored Procedures as available function names via my EDMX object, such as: _entities.InsertComment(..), _entities.UpdateComment(..), and _entities.DeleteComment(..) Intellisense is not picking these names up and I can't figure out why. If I perform these same steps using EF4, the function names are automatically picked up by Intellisense after adding the Stored Procedure Mappings. Is this a bug in EF1?   I've got an array of objects, and I need them sorted by their "title" key. It's currently working, though it's using an ASCII sort instead of a natural sort. The titles are filenames, so they look like this: file1 file2 file3 ... file10 file11 file12 I'm getting, as you would expect: file1 file10 file11 file12 file2 file3 ... Does anyone know if there is a way built-in to the NSArray sorting functionality to get this natural sorting as opposed to the alphabetical sort? • Is lock returned by ReentrantReadWriteLock equivalent to it's read and write locks?

  Hello, I have been looking around for the answer to this, but no joy. In Java, is using the lock created by ReentrantReadWriteLock equivalent to getting the read and write locks as returned by readLock.lock() and writeLock.lock()? In other words, can I expect the read and write locks associated with the ReentrantReadWriteLock to be requested and held by synchronizing on the ReentrantReadWriteLock? My gut says "no" since any object can be used for synchronization. I wouldn't think that there would be special behavior for ReentrantReadWriteLock. However, special behavior is the corner case of which I may not be aware. Thanks, Todd

• Pre-crash iphone symptoms - odd user position, volume change

  I'm seeing intermittent strange symtoms in my app: Blue blob (user position in MKMapView) starts "exploding" (odd, jerky animation). Can begin at startup and seems to indicate eventual problems. Speaker volume suddenly increases (back to level before I invoked kAudioSessionSetProperty_OtherMixableAudioShouldDuck). The app keeps running, but this change tells me to expect no more sounds from AVAudioPlayer. Also a reliable indicator of a future crash (on save, etc). I'm having trouble provoking this in the debugger (seems to only happen with movement in GPS). Any ideas to track it down?

• Bash script "read" not pausing for user input when executed from SSH shell

  I'm new to Bash scripting, so please be gentle. I'm connected to a Ubuntu server via SSH (PuTTY) and when I run this command, I expect the bash script that downloads and executes to allow user input and then echo that input. It seems to just write out the echo label for the input request and terminate. wget -O - https://raw.github.com/aaronhancock/pub/master/bash/readtest.sh | bash Any clue what I might be doing wrong?   Hello everyone. I have a model Fix with a relationship HABTM Device model. Device model has a belongsTo to Device_type model, like this, for only getting the device type name: var $belongsTo = array('Device_type'=>array('fields'=>'name')); So, I need every Fix, its devices and its Device_types. When I make a Fix->find('all', array('recursive' => 2)) I expect to get every Device related to Fix (this works ok) and ALSO for every device, its Device_type.name (which is not working). This is what I get instead for every Device in the result (an empty array): ["Device_type"]=> array(0) { } Besides this, when I make this query for testing: Fix->Device->find('all'), it returns the current Device_type.names for every device related to fixes, which means models are related propertly. Any help? Thanks.
